SITE. The Gaswork site is located in the area Hjorthagen in Stockholm, it produced citygas for Stockholms inhabitants up untill 2011 when Stockholm changed to nature-, and biogas. The area was designed by the architect Ferdinand Boberg in 1890´s and is characterized by the red brick. The area is now a part of the new urban district, Stockholm Royal Seaport and the Gaswork site will become a new culture cluster. A new district library will be a part of that cluster.

SERIES OF PARADOXES. A library consists of a variety of activi-ties, activities with different rhythm, volume and needs. The situation that all of these activities creates are each others paradoxes and request different spatiality. The program is arranged in consideration to these paradoxes. In three layers the visitor will move in between them to find the floor for his/hers purpose of the visit at the library. From passing by at the open, public, ground floor to stay for hours at the private top floor.

URBAN LIFE/ EVENT. bring people to the island.

GREEN. work with the existing values of the island when creating CIAC.

EXTENSION. keep the character of the Island by embed the exstension in the landscape.

SITE. The museum of modern art, MAMAC located in the city of Liegé, Belgium was built for the expo 1907, that took place in the city. The building is located on an Island in the middle of the city, an Island that today is used as a recreation area. The aim of the project is to make a design for an extension to MAMAC that lack of both storage space and exhibition space.

21CENTURY MUSEUM. A museum of the 21century should contain of activities that brings people there for different reasons, a spread of ages, all over the day and all over the year activities. The idea is to create an event space, a public space for people to visit even if they are not direct visitors to the museum. It is the public space that creates the extension of the museum. To preserve the landscape and take advantage of the slope (8 meters) the extension is underground and connects to existing building on -01. The two parts share the circulation and also the public outdoor space connects them. To achieve a combination of public space and exhibition spacs, mobile units are used. The mobility makes it possible to direct all different kind of events, to keep them open or closes, light or dark, big or small. 19 20

EXPO SPACE. The addition of the museum is designed for flexibility. Either it can be used as one large exhibition area, to host large objects. Or it can consist of many different exhibitions going on at the same time. The units are mobile and can be storage behind the open surface and they have diffrent sizes and conditions, to meet the need of all kind of art and objects.

THE UNIT. The unit created is a small, lightweight urban appliance/ installation, with fast growing plants in a fast grow-ing structure. Optimizing of growing space and growing time. All around year growing on a small surface. It’s a self sufficient urban agriculture unit, to pump up, plug in and play. A airborne lightweight climatic layer with a fast growing aeroponic system that is easy to disassamble and to relocate.

HARVEST. All around the year

Project Description. The concept is to create a unit that provides urban agriculture, an optimized unit in terms of growing space and growing time. That will provide the urban life/ public space a function, con-tribute to the cityscape and respond to the question of a sustainable environment. The aim is to make a big environmental effect with less invasive. Food handle stands for 1/3 of ecological footprint with the process-ing, packaging and transportation of food. The unit would respond to this environmental impact + the issue of growing cities and lack of fresh water in the future.

Concept. Pump air into the structure, connect to draining and ready to use. Only to maintain by adding nutrition and taking care of the plants. Water and heating are passive systems. Integrated system for control and delivery of nutrition to the roots. Double PVC coated poliester membrane, integrated with LED devices, that connects the two membrane and gives the plants light and provides heat to the unit. The LED’s are con-nected to photovoltaic solar cells. Water and nutrition tank also works as foundation and packing box for the unit. The unit is 6000x4500mm and 3500mm high and have a growing area of 17m2. The aim has been to keep the scale as small as possible to be suitable for an urban environment.

Aeroponic growing system. Aeroponic is a growing system were the plants are kept in a mist environment of nutrient solution. The plants receive 100% of available oxygen and CO2 to the root system and therefore an acceleration of growth. The mist is generated by a high-pressure pump. The main ecological advantages of aeroponics are the conservation of water and energy. The system gives a high all over year harvest. Since a mist is easier to handle than a liquid in a zero gravity environment NASA got involved in the research of aeroponics in hopes of using the method to grow food for their astronauts in space and have developed the method. The small amount of water required for aeroponic will be provided by rainwater har-vesting, heating for the plants will be provided by the climatic membrane and integrated growing LED lights.

Urban Agriculture. Urban agriculture requires optimizing of growing space and growing time. The unit needs to be as small as possible but produce as much vegetables as possible in short time. The unit also needs to be lightweight to respond to mobility. To achieve this, two systems are combined; a pneumatic structure, lightweight airborne membrane as climatic layer and an aeroponic growing system for fast growing vegetables on a small surface. The two systems needs to respond to idea of a self-sufficient unit.

Strategy. 01. Break the horisontal directions 02. With a connection line betwwen the public transportations, train and bus 03. Create a green connection with focus on the pe-destrians 04. Attach the busstation to the shopping mall + create a public indoor/ outdoor square. Also combine with a new hotel/ shortterm housing, restaurant, bar, spa and gym.

Project description. Partille is located 9.3 km outside of Gothenburg, 11min by train and 20min by buss. Since many of the inhabitants commute to Gothenburg for work Partille is to be considered as a sleeping city. The center is squeezed in between the railway and the highway, E20, with the river running in the middle. The horizontal directions are dominated and bring the character to the city as a thoroughfare. The strongest attraction mark is the shopping mall Allum, located next to the highway and in the center of Partille. Today Allum works as an external shopping center, without connections to the city center. The visitor arrives by car and doesn’t pass through to the remaining parts of the center. Partille is dominated by cars, without qualitative recreation areas and the city doesn’t offer social integration or interaction to its habitants. The concept for creating a sustainable Partille, is to focus on the pedestrians in the context of public trans-portation, connect Allum with the rest of the city center and integrate a hotel with the concept. FOLDED

41 42

Page 23: Portfolio

Project Description. The idea of the course was to design and build a furniture in two weeks, in order to work with the design all the way to production. The idea of folded was to design a furniture for limited living space, a small furniture but with a big expression. The idea was also to design a multifunctional furniture, a furniture that could work as a chair in one situation and as a coffee table in another. The result is a folded plane that’s creates a surface to sit on when putting on the shoes in the hallway or a surface to put down the coffee cup on next to the sofa. The folding design is a concept to create a visual effect and variety depending on how you place the furniture in the room, if it’s against a wall in a hallway context or in free space as in a coffee table context. The folded design is a combination of a chair and a table, a furniture and a sculpture.

RÖDA STEN ARCHITECTURE MUSEUM

45 46

Page 25: Portfolio

Project DescriptionRöda Sten is a centre for contemporary art and culture in Gothenburg, Sweden. The building is an old boiler house and is located at the western edge of the Klippan cultural reserve, with the view of the sea. The aim of the project is to develop the area around the existing building for culture events, clarify the entrance to the existing building and to add a new volume, for an architecture museum.

Site. The feeling at the site is a feeling of abandonees, a lonely building at the end of the city, looking out to the open sea. This feeling is very strong and unique and is to be preserved. Therefore the idea of the addition is to leave as small footprint as possible on the site and to strengthen the connection with the sea. The addition uses the existing building as a pedestal and together they form a landmark, a lighthouse and a viewpoint. The first building you get introduced to when you arrive to Gothenburg from the sea.

Project description. The project site is a steep ranging between the two areas Landala and Norra Guldheden in Gothenburg. Despite the short distance between the two, there’s no natural connection. The use of the steep today is public green. An important aspect is to work with the steep and clarify its climb-ing, the connection between the areas that it constitutes and increase the communication between them. The quality of the green is to be conserved as much as possible. In between the two areas three new buildings with external galleries is being placed, to maximize light and sight. The buildings are placed in the steep and the form of the steep is the source of inspiration for the design of them. The climbing of the steep is being reflected in the façade as well as in the shape of the apartments. The new buildings will work as a pas-sage between Landala and Norra Guldheden, both for current inhabitants and for new residents. The visual connection, with densification and the perpendicular placement of the buildings gets its counterpart with the diagonal stroll true the green.

The Building. The building connects the two districts, Landala + johanneberg and takes advatage of the slope as well as the green character of the area. It is created by three different modules. The modules are in etage to offer uniqe housing qualities in an city en-viroment.

FILT- the neonatal ward

61 62

Page 33: Portfolio

Project Description. The neonatal care is changing, more and more children, in lower ages can be saved. That’s the reason why the neonatal ward at the Eastern hospital in Gothenburg needs to expand. New care methods also require a reorganization of as well operations and premises. In the new neonatal care the parents are more involved in the care of their child. The proximity between the child and the parents is of great importance in the childs development. Proximity physic as well as mental must be supply. The new care method requires the parents to stay at the hospital and therefore a good living environment is important as well as a well functioned neonatal care. The environment for the children puts high demands on sound, light and wrap. They are lying in incubators and wrapped in blankets to be protected from the world around them, an atmosphere similar to the one in the uterus. The blanket is the architectonic approach in the design of the new neonatal ward at the Eastern hospital.

The blanket. The “blanket” runs horizontal and vertical true the building. The vertical blanket encloses the functions by the façade while the horizontal blanket rest on the darker mid part. Hallways that goes out to the façade roughens up the structure, brings in light and creates calm. Separated bubbles are created to step out on for reflection when needed.

Zurich, SwitzerlandBAUFELD FProject description. Next to the main station in Zurich a new area is under construction and the office got invited for the competition. The pro-gramme includes retail and gastro on street level and office and housing for the rest. The concept of the project is to fill up the plot with three levels, with patios for light and green. This levels contains of office space. To achieve the high level of housing that’s requested three towers sticks up from the base. The main tower is facing the square and frames it together with surrounding buildings. The area dominates of heavy facades with a strict structure. Our design is lighter, a glass facade with sliding elements.
