CLASS . Contemporary House Fall 2009

BUILDING SITE . va-cant lot .

ASSIGNMENT . Hand Drafted. Design a multi-use complex with residential and commercial units

CHOSEN CULTURE . In-dia

With the beautiful Baloa Park as the East facing neighbor, the International Cottag-es became an influ-ence for the design. Balboa park houses thirty-two interna-tional cottages, of-fering visitors a peek into each culture. The House of India was founded in 2005, and has yet to own a cottage of their own. This inspired the de-sign of the complex.

Circulation was inspired by the Human Body, and the orien-tation of the organs within. The kitchen is the center of the house, mimicking the stomache and the importance of food for the body. The traffic flow has great importance as every room or area is easily accessible from and entrance, and the hallways flow in a circular path around the kitchen.

FIRST FLOOR. An open plan allows for a grand entrance through tall glass doors, followed by an el-egant statement stair vertical-ly elongating the viewers eye. tucked beneath the stair lies the conference room, over half of which is glass walls, continu-ing the flow of light through the space and keeping the design open. The full heighted cielings in the collaboration/creative work zone also allow for natural light flow, making a successful and productive team environment.

CONCEPT . The root of all delicious dishes is the ingredients of the food. The Food Network is like a well balanced meal with many ingredients all com-bining to make one dish. The departments of a company all work together; therefore, this company needs open and collaborative work environments, as well as private conference rooms and successful traffic flow. The inspira-tion of herbs and spices in the color pallet are seen thoughout the space, as well as in the hallways and along walls where natural ingredients are grown for aroma and beauty. The space also includes a test kitchen and a large employee lounge/kitchen as a place to gather and experience the food network live.

CLASS . Interior Design IV Spring 2010

BUILDING SITE . 10TH & J Street, San Diego, Neighboring Petco Park

ASSIGNMENT . Duo Partnership . Design a restaurant/bar/Nightclub with a cultural influence

CHOSEN CULTURE . Brazil, Further influenced by the Favelas

Page 11: Portfolio

10

The Favelas are known as a poverish part of Brazil, housing over seventy percent of the nations population. These tight knit communities are woven together with meter wide pathways, creating an interlaced design. This pattern is seen throughout the design, and is a heavy influence on the con-cept.

[ ]The name of the design is as shown above. The patron is to call the space as they see it. Just like the Favelas, the space will have no name. The streets in the Favelas are not names, nor are the buildings. Everything

is named as the locals percieve it.

first floor. Restaurant & Casual Bar.

The First Floor has all natural and reused materi-als, making the space very raw, yet intreaging. The entrance through the large glass atrium, and then through large wooden doors allows the patron to be submerged into the restaurant and atmosphere.

All seating arrangements are found in the restuarant, whether the patron wants an intimate and quaint feel or a more relaxed, family style seating. The patio has a large table for parties of twenty, with skewers on the table for family style meals and a firepit for socializing after.

The Kitchen has a sev-enteen foot glass feature wall allow-ing patrons to see inside, inspired by a law in Bra-zil saying all patrons in the restuar-ant must have visible sight inside the kitchcen.

SECOND FLOOR. Bar & restaurant

The Waffle wall is introduced in the first floor as seen in the persepctive to the left, where the waffle is dripping into the casual bar. The waffle is showcased in the second floor, inspired by the sky view of the Favelas, creating a hallway through the bar. This floor also has outdoor seating, giving the patrons a beautiful view of Petco Park.

THIRD FLOOR. NIGHTCLUB

The third floor has two entrances, from the east if coming up the elevator, or from the west if coming up the stairs. This dance club is fully equipped with three bars, two dance floors, two DJ booth and multiple VIP seating areas, split upon two floors. The first of the two floors also showcases the waffle wall, acting as a divider between the dance floor and casual bar upon entry, allowing patrons to gather in a quieter area for conversing.

The disc jockey booth appears to be susspended from the above cut out in the cieleing, allowing patrons to view the night sky while enjoying the music.

ROOFTOP. NIGHTCLUB

The primary entrance to the rooftop is through the exterior staircase, which ends at the entrance to the dance floor. This design closes the Fave-la door and leads patrons into the outside world, mimiking the bubble like effect of the Favelas. The mood of the rooftop resembles the surrounding large cities in Brazil such as Rio De Janero, where materials are flat, shiny and man made.

THE STRUCTURAL PROCESS OF THE EXTERIOR STAIRCASE WENT THROUGH MANY PHASES.

THE FIRST PROTOTYPE WAS A RECTANGULAR PIECE.

THE SECOND PROTOTYPE WAS A OCTOGANAL TUBE.

THE FINAL PRODUCT IS A BUILDING HEIGHT ATRIUM, ENCASING THE STAIRCASE.

15

The Process.

The exterior stair case winds up the North-West side of the building, dropping patrons off at each level. The entrance to each floor takes patrons through the preexisting windows, as if entrances were man made. This design mimiked the man made communities in the Favelas, where doors, walls, and windows, are made of found materials and placement are out of necessity.

The bubble like effect of the favelas was protrayed through the glass flanged system encasing the staircase. This beautiful piece was a way to keep the pa-trons within the community, and outsiders out, while protecting and preserving the building.

The final renderings are at 8AM, High Noon, 5PM, and 10PM to show the beauty this newly designed building would bring to San Diego.
