• focus on one subject of sustainability• make the message multi-layered

The moment of thruth. Plan the implementation, document it and work together with the event organizers.

Do questionnairres, check the interactions of the users with the SICE, investigate the different reactions and opinions.

After the event evaluate the SICE by the goals and requirements that has been set before implementation. Make a list of advices for next SICEs.

• investigate possible ways of delivery of the message• provide different levels of information• make participatory discovery possible• provide feedback to the user

• define the necessary components• find sustainable options• use ‘ green’ energy sources• use recycled materials• fit design of the components to the identity of the event

Entertain & Sustain, self initiated _________

Tower of Power A Province of Fryslân funded project where artists and designers create an area, the Tower of Power, filled with interactive sustainable products. The Tower of Power has been present at several outdoor festivals in the Neth-erlands and the United Kingdom in the summer of 2009.___Responsibilities/tasksAs the initater of the project, I was responsible for the general concept and the design and realization of most of the interaction modules. As a project man-ager I liaised with different events and festivals and discussed requirements and finances. During the actual presentation on an event I was the main contact person for the event organisation and the volunteers.___ProblemHow to reach visitors of open air events with a positive message about sustain-ability subjects like solar energy and recycling?___ApproachResearch has been done resulting in a structured creative method to develop solutions for the problem. On the basis of this model, entertaining interactions have been developed that leave a positive memory of sustainable approaches. Several modules were realized with some examples below:• SolarDJ: a playful game where 4 participants can mix 4 instruments depending on the amount of sunlight they can catch with their solar panels• FairChair: a workshop for children where they create and take home chairs made of obsolete wood of local DIY stores• Workshop SolarTorch: a workshop for children where they built within an hour a solar panel powered LED torch; including a step by step explanation of the principles behind the product___ImpactThe Tower of Power proved to be a place that grabbed the attention of hun-dreds of event visitors and its combination of doing and discovering has ap-pealed to the event organizers. Especially children loved to try out the differ-ent modules and often explained the principles of e.g. solar energy to their parents. ___More infowww.entertainandsustain.com

Ministry of Housing, Spatial Planning & the Environment of the Netherlands_________

Greenovator TourAn interactive show about innovation, sustainability and entrepreneurship, consisting of a programme with short movies, panel and public discussions, in-terviews and student presentations, hosted by the Minister responsible for the Environmental policy of the Netherlands. The tour was present at 8 universi-ties in between June 2009 and February 2010, reaching out to approximately 200 local entrepreneurs, students and university staff interested in green inno-vation.___Responsibilities/tasksConcept phase: I was responsible for the set design and the technical specifica-tion of the tour, including budgetting and liaising with different stakeholders.Execution phase: Production manager; responsible for the on time and on budget delivery of the stage set, a faultless run of the show including video, light and sound amplification and the tear down of the set after the show.___ProblemHow do you communicate with the look & feel of the event the subject of the 8 shows, ‘Innovation, sustainability and entrepreneurship”?___ApproachCombine new innovative technologies and materials with materials that clearly communicate ‘sustainability’:• A minimalistic setup• A table built of old wood, sourced from an old farm, and recycled plastic legs, lighted by LED lights• Rugs made of sisal• The use of the latests types of low energy LED fixtures to use as effect lighting___ImpactA consistent look and feel on all locations, with an enthusiastic Minister and satisfied speakers and panel members, and, most importantly, positive reac-tions of the public regarding both the show and the message.___More infowww.greenovators.nl

Council of Schiebroek, Rotterdam, the Netherlands_________

‘Schiebroek doet mee’ The municipality of Schiebroek, a suburb of Rotterdam, finalized a series of workshops for minorities with an outdoor multi-cultural and multi-disciplin-ary festival titled ‘Schiebroek doet mee’(Schiebroek participates) consisting of concerts, presentations and a fair.___Responsibilities/tasksI was commissioned by the company responsible for the workshop series to define, together with them, the concept and experience of the final event. During the realization I was responsible for the technical and logistical realiza-tion, leading a production team and liaising with different subcontractors. ___ProblemHow to create an event where the different minority groups will feel welcome and be able to present themselves in a good way?___ApproachAfter consulting several parties an event plan has been developed, consisting of different dedicated areas, clearly layed out on the location; entertainment, meeting place, presentations of workshop series and space for local entrepre-neurs. By using tents that can be opened and closed in several ways the differ-ent presentations can be more or less inviting. In this way groups will not feel threatened and will feel free to present their work or meet up in a relaxed way.___ImpactThe different areas of the event were a success. Citizens of the neighbourhood that normally would not meet or talk were communicating with eachother. Presentations and discussion panels of the different workshops were visited well, ranging from a local choir on the mainstage to groups of women from the middle-east who discussing their problems with representatives of the lo-cal council. ___More infowww.vanvieren.nl (project leader workshop series)
