PORTSMOUTH YACHT CLUB Newsletter ~ September 2015 ~ Volume 117 Issue 8 From the Bridge Commodore Dan Gingras Volunteer heroes I’d like to thank Dave and Donna Kearns and George Almgren again for installing the new boarding ladder on the dinghy dock. This makes it much easier to get in and out of a dinghy, and provides a safe place to exit the water if someone was to fall in. We plan to install another ladder at the east end of the main dock to provide a place to exit the water if someone falls in there. I’d also like to thank Bill Rushforth and Craig Strehl for the new bar foot rail. Bill was kind enough to donate a SOLID brass rod for the rail, and Craig used his talents to install it. I think this really rounds out the front of the bar. Speaking of the bar, the cabinet for the back of the bar, being built by NH Prison Industries, was completed. Unfortunately it was completed with only 2 doors when we had asked for 4, so it needed to be re-built. We’re disappointed it’s taking so long, but I think the cost savings will be worth the wait, and Paul Roy continues to monitor their progress. Boating It’s been a great boating month, and I understand the cruise has gone well. Phyllis and I planned to join the cruise, but unfortunately engine problems on Lionheart forced us to go to Marblehead to have our Perkins turbo-diesel serviced. It’s always something !! Staff As is usual, we are going to lose a number of staff members to “back to school” schedules, so please try to be patient with any issues involving the staff. They’re trying their best. New Heaters I’d like to thank Greg and Deb Gebow for the donation of a new Patio Heater, and the Ladies committee for buying another two heaters. I know it’s early to start thinking about the fall, but these heaters will make being out on the patio more comfortable when the weather turns a little colder. I am always awestruck by the storied history of Portsmouth Yacht Club. This was before the club was moved to New Castle in 1938, and there was a picture of the club in 1948 for sale on Ebay which was a bit rich for my tastes ($18) so I passed on that one, but this 1930 picture was less than $1, so I did snap it up. I will have it framed at some point and donate it to the club to commemorate our wonderful history. This is the post card that was sent out in 1948 showing the club at it’s current location.

The 2015 season has proven to be a very successful one. The month of July had 7 events. Some catered by an outside vendor, some member cooked, steward cooked, plus two very successful evenings with dinners and outside entertainment. I would like to personally thank all the members involved in making these events so successful.

August has begun with a very well attended Greek Dinner prepared by Nancy and John Pappas and their crew. Since many of our staff will be leaving in the next week or two, we just had our Staff Appreciation Dinner catered by Sally Cobb of Mezzanine Catering. Upcoming events for the remainder of August are a Wednesday Night Stewards Chicken Dinner on August 19th and on August 26th, we are having the Past Commodores Steak Dinner prepared by Scott Blidberg and his crew.

September looks to be a very full month of activities. We will be having some changes to the schedule but it appears that we will have one or two events every week, beginning on September 4th with a newly scheduled Friday Night at the Club with a Pot Luck Dinner and DJ. On September 7th, we will be having our Labor Day Breakfast cooked by the Board, we move on to a catered dinner on September 9th, Dave Mowers Pursuit Race on the 12th, Challenger’s Cup Regatta and the Post Cruise dinner on the 13th , Ri Ra Catered dinner on the 16th with Oran Mor setting the mood with wonderful Irish Music, a pot luck on the 23rd, Lobster Bake on the 25th, and a Lasagna dinner on the 30th.

It is difficult to accept the dark is coming earlier, the gardens are almost done producing b e a u t i f u l f l o w e r s a n d vegetables, and fall is coming. Do not despair – we have plenty of events coming up at PYC to chase all those blues away. Copy the events schedule – fill in your calendar and enjoy the rest of the season.

See you around, Nancy ([email protected] 603-431-9252)

PYC 2015 DOWN EAST CRUISE The Cruise officially started Sunday August 2nd with a cocktail party on the dock at Journeys End Marina, hosted by David and Nancy McCardle and featuring pomegranate margueritas! A mini “pre cruise” from Portsmouth to Rockland included Peter Rabbit and Barefoot Children. Semper Fi joined the mini cruise at Orrs Bailey Island at the Yacht Club there. PYC had a total of 11 boats participating in all or parts of the Cruise: 10 member boats and one guest boat:

• Barefoot Children • Lady Sherle • Mistral • Mischief • Peter Rabbit

• Rockabuy • Sea Legs • Sea Quest • Semper Fi

• Running Spirit and their guests:

Top Shelf owned by Jim and Julianne Gilpin.

There were 8 ports of call. The cruise started in Rockland, Maine with the first port of call being Cradle Cove (Dark Harbor Marina) where we enjoyed a cocktail party and pot luck dinner using the marina’s deck and grill. Then it was onto Castine (Eaton’s Boat Yard) for 2 days. A cocktail party was held on the first night. On the second night a lobster bake was put on by Eaton’s Boat Yard and held inside their huge barn due to the rain. The next day the fleet travelled to the Benjamin River Marina, a quiet and pretty harbor off the Eggemoggin Reach. After leaving the Benjamin River Marina, the cruise proceeded up into Blue Hill Bay to the Kollegewidgwok Yacht Club in Blue Hill for two days. We were warmly welcomed to this picturesque harbor. The Yacht Club closed at 6pm, and PYC cruisers were given the use of the club’s outdoor facilities after closing. On both evenings, we enjoyed cocktail parties and pot luck dinners in an incredibly beautiful setting. The town of Blue Hill was accessible by foot or, at the right tide, by dinghy as well. Leaving Blue Hill Bay, we travelled to Frenchman’s Bay to Southwest Harbor, Dysart’s Great Cove Marina. On the following day, almost the entire cruising group participated in a tour of the Hinckley Boat Building Plant, arranged by Tom Duderewicz. Transportation was provided by Hinckley to and from the plant. We were given a first class tour of all the facilities. It was a very informative tour, showing the progression from the hull mold, to wiring, to installation of the floor plan followed by extensive carpentry, cabinet and varnish work and final steps in preparation for trucking the boat to Southwest Harbor for sea trials. We viewed each one of these phases. We also enjoyed cocktail parties/pot luck/grilling on Great Cove Marina’s deck as well as breakfast, lunch and dinners in town. Some cruisers travelled to Northeast Harbor and to Somes Sound while in this area. Southwest Harbor is always a great place to visit! From Southwest Harbor, the PYC Cruise travelled to Long Island (Frenchboro, Lunt’s Harbor) where we had a cocktail party and then a lobster dinner prepared by Lunt’s and topped off with their Maine Blueberry pie & vanilla ice cream! This beautiful harbor is one of PYC’S favorite ports of call. At this point, some boats started going toward Rockland, Rockport, Tenants Harbor, Boothbay Harbor and Portsmouth. This was the end of another great PYC Cruise Down East. A special thanks to the Yeatons and to the Cartnicks for their contribution to the cruise. Dick and Cindy Yeaton co-hosted a cocktail party in Castine with George and Nancy Kinser, and Cody and Carole Cartnick co-hosted a cocktail party at Great Harbor Marina, Southwest Harbor with Jay and Sherle Edwards. Enjoy the rest of the sailing season!

Cruisers: Remember the Post Cruise Pot Luck Dinner Sunday, September 13, cocktails @ 1700, dinner at 1800.

Bring something to share and if you like, something to grill…
