PORTSMOUTH YACHT CLUB Newsletter ~ December 2015/ January 2016 ~ Volume 117 Issue 10 From the Bridge Commodore Dan Gingras It’s funny how time seems to move faster as I get older… I can’t believe it’s been a year since I became Commodore of PYC. So much to do… so little time! I think it’s been a good year, and there have been a number of changes to the character and complexion of Portsmouth Yacht Club all good in my opinion. Change can be hard however, but time marches on. I sometimes sit on the deck and watch the tide come and go and realize that it’s been that way for hundreds of thousands of years, and probably will be for many thousands of years into the future, and it puts everything into perspective. My objective last year was to make the club more casual and inclusive, and thanks to the participation of many, many members, it has been. We still have some challenges facing PYC, including increased government regulations, building upkeep and responding to a changing member demographic, but I know that everyone will rise to the occasion and pitch in to make PYC the great organization it’s always been. So next year I want to ask: what do YOU want at PYC? We’ve had a good response to the Wednesday Pot luck suppers, and there has been some great Friday night and Saturday night events. Should we continue on that path, or is there something else we should be doing. Are there too many events? I believe in being inclusive and democratic, so your thoughts are important. Don’t hesitate to let me know what we should be doing, and I will work diligently to accommodate each and every one of your requests . Thank you for all your support this year, and I hope it will continue in 2016….. Dan IN MEMORIAM PYC member Cyrus Sweet passed away on September 30, 2015. Throughout Cy’s time on the Seacoast he was an avid sailor, cruising his boat from the Bahamas to Nova Scotia. He was a member of the Portsmouth Yacht Club since 1972, the Ocean Cruising Club and the Cruising Club of America. Our condolences to his wife Bobbie. PYC member Jim McCarthy passed away on Thursday, October 22, 2015. Jim, an avid sailor, had been a member or PYC since 2006 and a Past Commodore of Piscataqua Sailing Association. PORTSMOUTH YACHT CLUB Newsletter ~ December 2015/ January 2016 ~ Volume 117 Issue 10

From the Bridge Commodore Dan Gingras

It’s funny how time seems to move faster as I get older… I can’t believe it’s been a year since I became Commodore of PYC.

Dan

PYC member Jim McCarthy passed away on Thursday, October 22, 2015. Jim, an avid sailor, had been a member or PYC since 2006 and a Past Commodore of Piscataqua Sailing Association. Our condolences to Monica, his children, and family.

PYC NEWSLETTER Dec 2015/ Jan 2016P a g e 4 Club Phone 603-436-9877 PortsmouthYC.org

As some of you know, I have been asked to be Rear Commodore for the 2016 season. I hope to get a number of things accomplished during the upcoming season and will need your help to do this. I hope I can count on all of you to find some way to help with maintaining and improving your clubhouse and docks during the season. I will try to keep all of you informed about what is happening and when. If you have some thoughts, let me know your thoughts.

As many of you are aware, Docks Out went quite well even with the limited time we had available and the cold temperatures during the early morning effort. The turnout was amazing. We had 60 - 80 members helping with all manner of tasks to close down the club for the Winter. As a result of their efforts, the follow-on Work Party was cancelled. This would clearly not have been possible without the help of both active members and others that are still on the waiting list. WELL DONE to all. A week later, we were able to winterize the water system and complete a few task that had not been done yet. Ken Jones, Andy Courteau, Greg Gebow, Dan Gingras and I helped get this accomplished.

The DES issues brought up in a recent letter concerning our fuel system have been mitigated. Jerry has worked with the office of DES and our contractor Dirtworks to meet all of the issues raised by DES. We will have to replace the fuel hoses and the reels in the spring and also may have to replace the gas dispensers but this is not been decided at this time.

The windows on the first floor of the club house have been repaired with the exception of one that needs new parts on the bottom of the sash. Dave Gage has replaced a number of the plastic slides which should eliminate many of the problems which have existed. He is also working with Nick to find replacements for the pins at the bottom of the lower sash in two of the windows. While inspecting the windows, Nick was asked to put together a quote for replacement of the windows and is working on it. It does turn out that there are no windows that will replace the sliding windows on the river side of the clubhouse, and meet the requirements for a window located in the strong winds experienced on the river side of the club. He is looking at alternatives and will let us know what he finds out.

We continue to develop a plan for the dock house renovations to be undertaken this Spring prior to the club opening.

The caps for the pilings have arrived but we did not get a chance to get them on the new pilings before Docks Out. We also planned to install two or three safety ladders on the docks but they did not get purchased or installed. Both of these tasks will be completed in the spring.

We are having some issues with the new doors that were installed. The one on the side of the club does not close easily and the reason appears to be a split door jamb. The front door does not close well and it appears to be a result of the closer mechanism. Both of these issues will be dealt with before the opening in 2016.

It is clear that we have to address the issue of painting or replacing some of the wood decking at the club. A strategy for completing this before the active part of next season will be developed with the House & Docks Committee meeting which will be scheduled for late January.

Docks In will be a bit later this year as it will be on April 23, 2015. High tide is at 1:00 PM so we will have some time to get the opening tasks in the club house accomplished before we start. As the season gets closer, we will consider if we need a Work Party on the Saturday before Docks In or the Saturday after Docks In. I believe we can get everything done in one day if you will all help get the work done. Set April 23rd aside for Docks In.

From the Vice Commodore ~ Dick Blidberg

Docks Out 2015

It is hard to believe the winter lock is on the front door and all the patio furniture has been put away - but it’s happened, and now we move on to next year.

October was a wonderful month of activities hosted by Lynn and Jack Joslyn and Soni Christensen. We celebrated the end of the season with a great catered dinner by Sally Cobb of Mezzanine Catering, a delicious Turkey Dinner presented by Kitty and Gray Cornwell and their excellent crew (don’t they have job security!!!!) and ended the club season eating and dancing the night away with our Closing Night Dinner Dance “Under a Harvest Moon!”, hosted by Chris and Whit Weller, Ann Mowers, Priscilla Lent, Pat Daly and Roy Briscoe, and Phyllis and Doug Joyce. A special thanks to all of you who have not been named but helped organize and clean after every event. Thank you, thank you, and thank you.

Now on to what is coming up in the next couple of months. On December 12th, the Christmas Dinner Dance hosted by Jackie Adams and Elaine Perry will help us kick off the holidays with an evening of great food and music/dancing provided by the Jeannie Daniels Band at the Portsmouth Country Club.

January 1st is our first event of 2016 – Brunch at Grill 28 hosted by Barbara and Steve Armstrong. For those of you who have not attended before it is a great way to begin the New Year and meet your new Board of Directors and Flag Officers for 2016 and say thank you to our outgoing Commodore Dan Gingras.

March 19th is already scheduled for our Speaker/Dinner at the Portsmouth Country Club. Think of this as the first time you get to see all those friends who have been hiding in the warm climates and made the mistake of coming home too early. Really though – it is a great way to see all those friends you haven’t seen during the Winter and start thinking about those beautiful warm days ahead.

That about winds up the year – it has been fun – it has been hectic – and for the most part it has been great. Thank you Board, thank you Dick Blidberg, thank you Dan Gingras, and really, really, really, thank you Jerry Goldfarb for all your help. Sign up – come to the Dance – come to the Brunch – come to the March event.

Merry Christmas and have a wonderful safe and loving New Year.

See you soon, Nanc.
