What is AC coupling ? --When a utility power outage occurs, grid interactive inverters are required to shut down to prevent islanding. --Homeowners soon realize that the essential loads in the home are no longer powered, and all the potential energy from the solar array is being wasted. --AC Coupling is achieved when the AC outputs of the battery based inverter and micro inverter land on the same output bus (essential loads sub-panel). --Magnum battery-based inverters can be installed in a way to utilize the power from those expensive PV modules that is being wasted during a power outage. --The MS-PAE inverter charger can synchronize and work with virtually all grid interactive string and micro inverters.

What is AC coupling ? --AC coupling allows the use of utility interactive inverters with battery based bi-directional inverters and battery based PV systems.

--When utility is lost, the AC outputs of both the micro inverter and battery based inverter “couple” together in the essential loads sub panel.

--AC coupling allows the homeowner to utilize the expensive PV array to power the essential loads and charge the batteries during a utility outage.

--The greatest challenge in an AC coupled design is regulating the charge to the battery bank.

--We believe micro inverters offer the greatest value proposition, uncompromised safety built in and flexibility in every AC coupled application.

Advantages of installing micro inverters with battery back-up using the MS-PAE inverter charger

Easier to install, simpler to program, flexible and safe out of the box •  Higher efficiency during sell back mode >95% •  Utilizes harvest from RE source during outages

•  Lower cost than DC coupled/separate systems

•  Configured at higher voltages/lower BOS cost

•  Rapid shutdown and AFCI built in (2014 NEC compliant)

•  No additional costs associated with 1st responder protections

Considerations today • Magnum’s are UL1741, not grid interactive • Magnum inverter should be 10% larger • Some brands of GT inverters are sensitive • DC or AC diversion controller and loads required to control battery charging • Magnum inverters utilize a frequency shift to prevent battery over-charging • Hz shift should only be used at failsafe feature • DL’s and controllers or black out relays are primary method to control charging • When grid is lost, both inverters disconnect and resynchronize with MS-PAE

Introducing the New MicroGT-500 Dual MPPT Micro-inverter

• Supports two PV modules per inverter

• Module level electronics mitigates shading issues and increases system output and reliability

• UL1741, NEC690.12 compliant, safe and ready for deployment in all leading North American markets

• Optimized to regulate Magnum’s battery-based inverters when in AC coupled mode by tapering the charge based on battery SOC…NO load diversion control required.

• Unified web-based dashboard for monitoring production of the microinverter as well as information from the Magnum MS-PAE battery-based inverter/charger

• Daisy chain installation, no trunk cable required

How does frequency shift work ? •  IEEE Standards require tight grid frequency and voltage tolerances in

order to connect to the grid with interactive inverters. •  Frequency Shift is enabled with the ME-ARC50 when the battery type is set

to Custom and activates when the voltage condition of the battery bank being charged is pushed +2 Vdc above the custom absorb set-point for 48V PAE models and +1Vdc for 24V PAE models.

•  The MS-PAE targets the absorb set point and when the Voltage exceeds the custom absorb set point, frequency shifts in stages to reduce the PV source circuit output.

•  The MicroGT, communicating through a connection to the Magnum network, tapers down the output to the essential loads subpanel
