Welcome

From Plan to RealityFor more than half a century our school has evolved to meet the demands of our students and the local community. The first expansion of our facility occurred in 1970, with the installation of our seawall and a boat storage building. Classes were held outside on the lawn. Since then, we have expanded three times with major additions.

We are now underway with our fourth and largest project, OCC’s Maritime Training Center. This spectacular new facility is now going up across Pacific Coast Highway from our current location. The old and new buildings, 120 feet apart, will be connected by a bridge 18 feet above the roadway. Completion is set for August 2021, when fall semester students will enter new classrooms to pursue their dreams of a maritime career. This plan has been in the making for more than 15 years. It has taken leaps of faith, serendipity, and doggedness by many supporters and agencies including Orange Coast College, the Coast Community College District, the County of Orange, the City of Newport Beach, the Coastal Commission, the California Department of Transportation, The Division of the State Architect, and the Orange County Sanitation District. We are embracing our future and remain focused on our new building’s single purpose: to serve students who seek the knowledge and skills needed for a rewarding maritime career. Our faculty and staff share this same purpose. Along with our students, we have something exciting on the horizon, and this makes for a great voyage.

For more information about the new Orange Coast College Maritime Training Center, see the back page of this catalog.

The Marine Program at Orange Coast College is one of the nation’s largest non-profit public boating education institutions. Founded in 1960, this comprehensive program offers a wide

variety of nautical learning experiences in the classroom and on the water. We are dedicated to providing all community members with access to high quality, low cost sailing and seamanship education.

The School of Sailing & Seamanship is a fee-based, self supporting non-credit community program which offers dozens of classroom and on the water courses for youth and adults. The School operates more than three dozen sailing and power vessels, ranging

from 14 to 92 feet. The School operates year-round, seven days a week, with the majority of courses held on evenings and weekends. Courses range from Beginning Sailing through Ocean Voyaging and powerboat training. The average yearly enrollment is 1,500 students.

The Coast Guard Licensing program offers professional level classes in Coast Guard License Preparation, Radar Observer and Basic Safety Training.

Nordic Star was donated to the OCC Foundation in 2010 and operates as a training vessel for students in the Professional Mariner Program as well as a private charter yacht on Newport Harbor and at Catalina Island.

The Professional Mariner Program at Orange Coast College is a 19 to 21 unit credit vocational program, designed for college students interested in careers in the maritime industry. Courses in this program are offered during Fall and Spring semesters.

Credit Sailing Courses are offered during Fall and Spring semesters through the Kinesiology Department. Beginning and Intermediate classes are held on weekdays.

Donations

The majority of vessels in the program are gifts from private individuals. Maintenance of the program’s vessels and facilities are almost exclusively funded through fees, grants, and private giving.

This unique community program is thankful to its partners including all students, California State Parks Division of Boating and Waterways, the County of Orange, the Coast Community College District, Orange Coast College, many non-profit family foundations, and corporate and private donors.

Private Lessons & Rentals

Private LessonsPrivate lessons are available with a certified instructor for all skill levels. A private lesson is a one-on-one experience that works well as a confidence builder, as an introduction to sailing, or to allow focus on improving specific skills, or to make up a missed class. A private lesson with an OCC instructor will take your ability to the next level with individual learning and feedback.

Private lessons are typically taught in 3-hour sessions (except for powerboat instruction), scheduled at a time that is convenient for you, and based on instructor availability.

Rates are based on a 1:1 ratio. A fee applies for additional students.

OCC SA Member’s receive a 10% discount on published rates.

To enjoy access to our rental fleet at great rates you must be a current member of the OCC Sailing Association, pass a boat specific written test, a rules test, and regardless of sailing experience and ability, you MUST complete an on-the-water skills assessment with one of our instructors for the practical test. A passing grade on the written test is required prior to scheduling the practical test.

The rental fleet is available by reservation or on an “as available” basis with priority given to scheduled classes. We are a self-service rental facility and when you rent a sailboat you are required to launch, rig, de-rig and clean up your boat.

Intermediate Sailing is about skills development so you can sail faster and smarter with greater confidence. With an emphasis on improving boat-handling skills as both skipper and crew, refining sail trim and problem solving afloat, you will spend most of your class time on the water practicing, and expanding on the skills you learned in Beginning Sailing. The importance of balance and teamwork will become evident as you learn how to maneuver without a rudder using only the sails and the crew weight. Single-handed sailing will be introduced time and weather permitting. Upon successful completion of Intermediate Lidos you will be ready to move on to Harbor 20 Level 2 or Shields 1.

OCC SA Membership & Youth Outreach Program

Youth Outreach ProgramThe program is FREE to programs serving “at-risk” youth thanks to a grant from California State Parks - Division of Boating and Waterways.

Learn to Sail & Boating Safety Courses for School & Youth Groups

For more than 25 years The School of Sailing & Seamanship has offered “Safe Boating” and “Learn to Sail” courses

to youth in the Orange County area. The program offers a unique opportunity for students to experience our local waterways. In recent years our Sailing & Science camp has joined our traditional Learn to Sail Camp and Safe Powerboat Handling Camp

Operating a boat requires knowledge, skill, teamwork, concentration and a sense of responsibility. The Youth Outreach Program, taught by OCC’s certified sailing and powerboat instructors, builds essential skills, confidence and self-esteem while students are having fun and enjoying the outdoors.

Our Summer Sailing Camps are an ideal place for kids and teens to explore sailing for the first time. The goal of the Learn to Sail Program is to build confidence and self-esteem through the sport of sailing. Sailing requires agility, skill, teamwork and concentration. Participants enjoy learning how to sail through games, races and other activities to enhance individual, and team working skills.

Campers in the Powerboat Camp will learn how to safely operate small boats powered by outboard engines. This 16-hours course includes hands-on instruction and theory to build seamanship knowledge and practical boat handling skills. Students will have the option take the test required to obtain a California Boater Card.

In the Sailing and Science Camp students will learn to sail while exploring every day science at work in and around the boat. This camp is filled with hands-on learning and fun activities from boat building to navigation, environmental stewardship and sailing adventures. Sailing offers a myriad of opportunities to balance learning and fun in a dynamic way with campers building confidence and self-esteem while having fun enjoying the outdoors.

Over the years’ participants have come from groups such as Families First, American Family Housing, Phoenix House, KidWorks, SOY, Joplin Youth Center, Back Bay High School and Ensign Middle School.

The program runs year round and is available to all School and Youth groups as After School Sailing classes, school day PE classes or summer camps. Give us a call or visit our website for more information.

All About Anchoring and Navigation on a Weekend Catalina CruisePrerequisite: Basic Cruising 1 or equivalent.

Discover the world of cruising aboard our Catalina 42 Betty. Your weekend starts off with an overview of safety gear and procedures. You will then get underway and experience a full day of sailing. Along the way, this course answers the practical questions you have about navigating your way to Catalina. After arriving at Catalina you will anchor near Emerald Bay for the evening. Saturday will be spend setting bow and stern anchors at Little Fisherman before working our way down east and anchoring in four or five coves underway for a tour of the best north side anchorages. Sunday we will navigate our way home to Newport. Crew members participate in all aspects of boat handling including steering, navigation, sail handling, log keeping, anchoring, and cleanup.

Experience is the real teacher when it comes to navigation and anchoring. For many new cruisers the primary concern is having to anchor once they arrive at Catalina if no moorings are available. This course will make solving that problem an interesting and satisfying experience and serves as the gateway to self-reliance and an excellent preparation for US SAILING Bareboat Cruising Certification.

Nordic Star

Nordic StarOur flagship Nordic Star will continue her double life in 2020, operating as a training vessel for students in OCC’s Professional Mariner Program as well as a private charter yacht on Newport Harbor and at Catalina Island.

This Spring and Fall, Nordic Star will be used by OCC students who are interested in careers in the maritime industry. The 92-foot aluminum vessel is an ideal “platform” for gaining hands-on experience desired by maritime industry employers. On board subjects include deck operations, fire-fighting, crew overboard recovery and abandon ship procedures. Command/bridge topics include bridge management, piloting, navigation, Radar, navigation plotters, radios, and GPS. Engine room subjects include engine monitoring and control, fuel and water management, engine room safety, electrical distribution, pumps, motors, and bilge systems.

On weekends and evenings, Nordic Star is available to individuals and groups for private charter. A US Coast Guard inspected vessel, Nordic Star can carry up to 50 guests in the harbor and in local offshore waters. She is an ideal yacht for meetings and celebrations while cruising Newport Harbor or down the coast to Laguna. With her luxurious cabins, she is exceptional for overnight cruises to Catalina Island or beyond. Charterers have great flexibility to design their own voyages, choosing dates, locations, level of service, and activities. Nordic Star’s crew normally includes a captain, 1st mate, steward or stewardess, and a cook. Quite often, students from OCC’s professional mariner program are integrated into the crew.

Donated to the OCC Foundation in 2010 by the Jerrell Barto family of Newport Beach, Nordic Star’s maintenance and operation is supported solely by charter income, in-kind gifts, and grants. For the past five years, most of Nordic Star’s capital improvements have been provided by the Harriet E. Pfleger Foundation.

NEWPORT BEACH Shovels have officially hit the dirt at what will be Orange Coast College’s new Mariner Training Center in Newport Beach. Set to open in the fall of 2021, the building will be home to OCC’s growing Professional Mariner Program, which offers an associate degree or certificate program for students who are pursuing careers in boating and maritime fields. The two-story, 12,000-square-foot facility will include classrooms, a conference room and a student lounge, as well as a state-of- the-art laboratory space, a bridge simulator, and a radar training room. There will also be ground-level parking below the building.

The center will be located across Pacific Coast Highway from the college’s Sailing and Rowing Base on Newport Harbor. A skyway bridge over PCH will connect the new center to the school’s harbor side facility. The $22 million project was funded by the local Measure M school bond, passed by voters in 2012.

“After we started the program [Professional Mariner] about ten years ago it quickly matched our capacity at this location,” said Brad Avery, the director of OCC School of Sailing and Seamanship. “We knew we would need another location for this program” he added.

The school is one of a few of its kind nationwide, with the Professional Mariner Program offering an associate degree. The program prepares students for jobs on private/charter yachts, cruise ships, fishing vessels, passenger ferries, dive boats, supply/tug boats and research

vessels. Some students choose to go straight into the industry and others transfer to four-year maritime academies.

The OCC School of Sailing and Seamanship also offers community sailing, boating and seamanship courses for all ages and levels, youth camps, family sailing, keelboat classes, cruising courses, powerboat operation and seamanship courses. The school currently serves more than 1,500 students and adults annually. For more information visit occsailing.com.
