The PPro-Seal Electrofusion pipingsystem is pressure rated at 150 psi (10bar) @ 72°F (23°C). The derating factorsfor elevated temperatures are as follows:

Surge Pressure

The following table gives the surgepressure (water hammer) in copolymerpolypropylene pipe for various velocitiesat 73°F (23°C). The surge pressureshould be added to the static linepressure to determine the maximumsystem operating pressure. In no caseshould this be over 11/

2 times the recom-

mended working pressure. This will,under normal conditions, ensure ad-equate safety to absorb the shock ofclosing valves.

Support Spacing

When thermoplastic piping systems areinstalled above ground, they must beproperly supported to avoid unneces-sary stresses and possible sagging. Onhorizontal runs, hangers of the varioustypes should be used at approximatelythe spacing given in the following chart.Note that additional support is neededas temperatures increase. At elevatedtemperatures, continuous support, in theform of a smoothly textured structuralangle or channel, is required.

Short Term Collapse Pressure

Polypropylene pipe is often used forsuction lines or in applications whereexternal pressures are applied to thepipe, such as in heat exchangers orunderwater loading conditions. Thedifferential pressure rating of the pipe isdetermined by derating the short termcollapse pressures. Collapse pressuremust be adjusted for temperaturedifferences other than for room tempera-ture. The Short-Term Collapse Pressurechart used to adjust pipe pressure ratingmay be used for this purpose (see notebelow table).

Soil Load — Schedule 80 Pipe

Underground pipe is subjected toexternal loads caused by the weight ofthe backfill material and by loadsapplied at the surface of the fill. Thesecan range from static to dynamic loads.

Static loads comprise the weight of thesoil above the top of the pipe and anyadditional material that might bestacked above ground. An importantpoint is that the load in a flexible pipewill be less than on a rigid pipe buriedin the same manner. This is because theflexible conduit transfers part of the loadto the surrounding soil and not thereverse. Soil loads are minimal withnarrow trenches until a pipe depth of 10feet is attained.

Dynamic loads are loads caused bymoving vehicles such as trucks, trainsand other heavy equipment. For shallowburial conditions, live loads should beconsidered and added to static loads,but at depths greater than 10 feet, liveloads have very little effect.
