Creating Files for Use in Preps 5.0

This document describes how to create PostScript® files from QuarkXPress® 6.0 documents on Mac OS® X.

In order for Preps to correctly process a QuarkXPress 6.0 document as a source file, you must save the document as a PostScript file. You can create three types of PostScript files from QuarkXPress 6.0 documents:

• “Print to file” color composite

• “Print to file” pre-separated

• Single-page EPS

The type of file you create depends on the structure of the QuarkXPress document. For multiple-page documents, we recommend creating color composite files whenever possible. However, if you want to retain QuarkXPress trapping information, you must create a pre-separated file. Preps cannot preview individual color plates for pre-separated QuarkXPress PostScript files.

EPS files saved from QuarkXPress pages are device independent, so there is no page-size limit, which is important for larger page sizes. EPS files saved from QuarkXPress pages that contain bleeds require offsets in Preps to correctly position the page information.

Important: QuarkXPress 6.0 automatically installs an XTension™ called OPI. This XTension forces OPI 2.0 comments to be included in all output. We strongly recommend disabling this XTension before creating PostScript or EPS files from QuarkXPress.

Options for Creating FilesWhen using the “print to file” method of creating PostScript, if the QuarkXPress document contains embedded color TIFF images, you must select a color output device to retain the color information in the PostScript file. If you select an output device that does not support color, QuarkXPress converts the TIFF images to grayscale. We recommend using the ScenicSoft Color device (ssicolor.ppd).

ColorsQuarkXPress 6.0 supports DeviceN colors, so spot-colorized TIFFs can now be color separated correctly without using the Creo Colorized TIFF XTension™ or omitting the images from the PostScript file and OPI-linking them upon output. The color options for QuarkXPress 6.0 are:

• Composite CMYK: Converts TIFF images to CMYK

• Composite RGB: Converts TIFF images to RGB

• As Is: Leaves images in the color space in which they were originally defined

• DeviceN: Represents images with DeviceN colors where appropriate. This is the most appropriate setting when printing documents that include spot colors. Images are retained in their original color spaces.

TrapsTo retain QuarkXPress trapping information, you must create a pre-separated PostScript file.

BleedsBleeds are supported in “print to file” PostScript files. If you create EPS files from QuarkXPress pages (Save Page as EPS), you must use offsets in Preps to correctly position the page information.

OPI Links and DCSIf you embed (include) or link (omit) TIFF and/or EPS images, you can use any of the methods to create PostScript files. If you embed DCS images, you must create pre-separated PostScript files.

If you omit images, you must use Preps XL, Preps Pro, or an OPI server to merge in the high-resolution image data.

Adding a Generic Color DeviceFor consistent, good results when using the “print to file” method for creating PostScript files, we recommend that you set up a device in the Mac OS Printer Setup Utility that uses the generic color device called ScenicSoft Color. The PPD for that device, ssicolor.ppd, is on the Preps CD.

2. Select the Use Auxiliary Folder check box.

3. Click Select.

4. Locate and select the folder that contains ssicolor.ppd, and then click Open.

5. Click OK.

Setting Up a Virtual PostScript Printer on Mac OS 10.31. In the Mac OS Printer Setup Utility, click Add.

2. From the list at the top of the dialog box, select IP Printing.

3. From the Printer Type list, select LPD/LPR.

4. In the Printer Address box, type localhost.

5. In the Queue Name box, type a name for the virtual printer (for example, Print-to-file).

6. From the Printer Model list, select Other.

7. In the Choose a File dialog box, locate ssicolor.ppd, and then click Choose.

8. Click Add.

QuarkXPress 6.0 Options for Composite and Pre-Separated FilesTo create a “print to file” PostScript file from a QuarkXPress 6.0 document, you must configure several printing options.

Printer and General Options1. With the QuarkXPress document open, from the File menu, choose Print.

2. Click Printer.

3. If a warning message appears informing you that Clicking Print or Save in the following dialog box will return you to the Print dialog box, select the Do not show this warning again check box, and then click OK.

4. In the Print dialog box, from the Printer list, select the printer that you configured to use ssicolor.ppd (for example, Print-to-file).

5. Under the Copies & Pages list, in the Copies box, type 1. The Collated check box applies only when printing more than one copy.

6. Select the page range you want to print.

7. Click the disclosure button on Copies & Pages, and select Output Options.

8. Select the Save as File check box.

9. From the Format list, select PostScript.

10. Click the disclosure button on Output Options, and select Cover Page.

11. For Print Cover Page, select None.

12. Click the disclosure button on Cover Page, and select Error Handling.

13. Select No special reporting.

14. Click Save.

15. In the Save to File dialog box, type a name for the file in the Save As box.

16. From the Where list, select a location to save the file.

Or:

Click the disclosure button next to the Save As box, and then select a location to save the file.

17. Click Save.

Page Setup Options1. In the Print dialog box, click Page Setup.

2. From the Settings list, select Page Attributes.

3. From the Format For list, select the printer that you configured to use ssicolor.ppd.

4. From the Paper Size list, select US Letter.

5. For Orientation, select the Portrait icon, even if the document is landscape orientation.

6. In the Scale box, type 100.

7. Click OK.

Layout Tab1. In the Print dialog box, click the Layout tab.

2. Select the Separations check box to create a pre-separated PostScript file, or clear the Separations check box to create a composite PostScript file.

3. Select the Print Blank Pages check box.

4. Clear the Spreads, Thumbnails, Collate, and Back to Front check boxes.

5. From the Page Sequence list, select the pages that you want to print (All, Even, or Odd).

6. From the Registration list, select Centered.

7. In the Offset box, type the distance you want the crop marks to be offset from the edge of the page. We recommend 12 points.

8. From the Tiling list, select Off.

9. Leave the Overlap box blank, or type 0.

Setup Tab1. In the Print dialog box, click the Setup tab.

2. From the Printer Description list, select ScenicSoft Color. If this device is not available, see the instructions for adding ssicolor.ppd under Adding a Generic Color Device on page 2.

It is important to use a PPD that included no device-specific information and that supports color and variable-width media. If such a device is selected, the following options are available.

3. From the Paper Size list, select Custom.

4. In the Paper Width box, type a number that is 1 inch wider than the width of the document.

5. In the Paper Offset box, type 0.

6. From the Paper Height list, select Automatic.

7. In the Page Gap box, type 0.

8. In the Reduce or Enlarge box, type 100%.

9. Clear the Fit in Print Area check box.

10. From the Page Positioning list, select Left Edge.

11. For Orientation, click the Portrait icon, even if the document is landscape orientation.

Output Tab1. Click the Output tab.

2. From the Print Colors list, select DeviceN.

3. From the Halftoning list, select Conventional.

4. The recommended dpi for the selected output device appears in the Resolution list. If your print vendor requires a different resolution, select it from this list.

5. In the Frequency box, type the line screen specified by your print vendor.

Options Tab1. Click the Options tab.

2. Clear the Quark PostScript Error Handler check box.

3. From the Page Flip list, select None.

4. Clear the Negative Print check box.

5. In the Pictures area, from the Output list, select Normal.

6. From the Data list, select the data format option specified by your print vendor.

7. Clear the Full Res of Rotated Objects check box.

8. Select or clear the Overprint EPS Black check box as required.

9. Select the Full Resolution TIFF Output check box.

Layers Tab1. Click the Layers tab.

2. If there are layers in the document, set them to print or not print as required.

3. Select or clear the Apply to Layout check box as required.

Bleed Tab1. Click the Bleed tab.

2. From the Bleed Type list, select Symmetric.

3. Select the Clip at Bleed Edge check box.

4. In the Amount box, type the amount of bleed you want.

OPI Tab1. Click the OPI tab.

2. Select the graphics options specified by your print vendor.

Preview TabThe Preview tab displays a summary of the settings you selected as well as a graphical representation of how the document pages fit on the selected page size.

Options for Creating Composite FilesThe follow settings are specifically for creating composite PostScript files.

Layout Tab1. In the Print dialog box, click the Layout tab.

2. Clear the Separations check box.

All other settings are the same as previously described under QuarkXPress 6.0 Options for Composite and Pre-Separated Files on page 4.

3. Click Print.

You have created a composite PostScript file from a QuarkXPress document. You can add the file to a Preps job.

Options for Creating Pre-Separated FilesThe following settings are specifically for creating pre-separated PostScript files.

Layout Tab1. Click the Layout tab.

2. Select the Separations check box.

All other settings on this tab are the same as previously described under QuarkXPress 6.0 Options for Composite and Pre-Separated Files on page 4.

Output Tab1. Click the Output tab.

2. From the Plates list, select Used Process & Spot.

All other settings on this tab are the same as previously described under QuarkXPress 6.0 Options for Composite and Pre-Separated Files on page 4.

3. Click Print.

You have created a pre-separated PostScript file from a QuarkXPress document. You can add the file to a Preps job.

Creating EPS FilesImportant: We do not recommend creating EPS files using the following procedure. The limitations are that this method does not include fonts and including bleeds requires the EPS files to need page offsets in Preps. EPS files are the only methods for creating files from QuarkXPres s6.0 that are not limited to the page size of the output device.

This procedure is the only way to create EPS files from QuarkXPress that can be used in a Preps job.

Creating an EPS File1. From the File menu, choose Save Page as EPS.

2. In the Save As box, type a name for the file.

3. From the Where list, select a location to save the file.

Or:

Click the disclosure button next to the Save As box, and then select a location to save the file.

Save Page as EPS Tab1. Click the Save page as EPS tab.

2. In the Page box, type the number of the document page that you want to save as an EPS.

3. In the Scale box, type 100%.

4. Clear the Spread check box unless you want facing pages to be saved as a single page.

5. Select the Transparent Page check box.

6. In the Format box, select Color.

7. From the Space list, select CMYK if the document does not contain spot colors, or select DeviceN if the document does contain spot colors.

8. From the Preview list, select None.

9. From the Data list, select the data format option specified by your print vendor.

10. From the OPI list, select the graphic option specified by your print vendor.

Bleed Tab1. Click the Bleed tab.

2. From the Bleed Type list, select Symmetric.

3. In the Amount box, type the amount of bleed you want.

OPI Tab1. Click the OPI tab.

2. Select the graphics options specified by your print vendor.

3. Click Save.

You have created a single-page EPS file from a QuarkXPress document. You can add the file to a Preps job.
