Mike Brown
England Rugby Player, former Wyvern College Student
Born in Southampton, Mike started playing rugby at the age of eight, when he joined his local Rugby club’s U8 team in Salisbury. After performing consistently in several youth championships, in 2002 Mike was invited to train with the Harlequins Academy. He soon excelled, making his debut during the 2005/06 season, and was named Young Player of the Year, before going on to be Player of the Year the following season.
The 2007/08 season saw Mike called up into the England Saxons squad, followed by a call up to the England squad in 2007, where he made his Test debut against South Africa on his first senior tour. During the 2010/11 season Mike helped his club side Harlequins beat Stade Francais 19-18 in the Amlin Challenge Cup final and was voted the clubs’ Players’ Player of the season.
His impressive club form carried on into the 2011/12 Aviva Premiership season helping Quins to reach the top of the Aviva Premiership table, scoring 11 tries in his first 21 matches including five tries in five European (Heineken) Cup appearances. This form resulted in a call up to the England Performance Squad, making two appearances in the 2012 Six Nations.
The 2012 Autumn Internationals saw England claim a famous 38-21 victory over New Zealand with Mike being a star performer and becoming one of the stand out players of Stuart Lancaster’s new England side. His fine form continued into the 2013 Six Nations, starting all 5 matches on the wing, with England narrowly missing out on the Championship after a final day loss to Wales in Cardiff.
He was finally picked as Fullback by Stuart Lancaster on the 2013 summer tour of Argentina, and was subsequently named England’s Man of the Series following his impressive form during the 2013 QBE Autumn Internationals. Mike scored his first try for England in the 2014 Six Nations Championship match against France on 1 February 2014 and his second came a week later in a comprehensive 20-0 victory against Scotland. He then scored two tries and was named Man of the Match for the third time in the tournament in the 52-11 away win over Italy in Rome. In recognition of his fantastic form throughout the 2014 Six Nations Championship, he was selected by the general public for the 2014 RBS Six Nations Player of the Championship award. During the recent World Cup, Mike scored two tries on his competition debut. Mike won his 40th international cap in the tournament opener at Twickenham and has been a mainstay of the England team under Stuart Lancaster. “It was amazing to score two tries in my first World Cup on home soil so that is a dream come true and something I will look at with fond memories.”
He is a keen Manchester United supporter and an Ambassador for GB Wheelchair Rugby.
