A young man asked an old rich

man how he made his money.

The old guy fin-gered his expen-

sive wool vest and said, “Well, son, it was 1932. The

depth of the Great Depression. I was down to my last

nickel.”

“I invested that nickel in an apple. I spent the entire day polishing the apple and, at the end of the day, I

sold the apple for ten cents.”

“The next morn-ing, I invested

those ten cents in two apples. I spent

the entire day polishing them

and sold them at 5:00 pm for 20

cents. I continued this system for a

month, by the end of which I’d accu-mulated a fortune

of $9.80.”

“Then my wife’s father died and

left us two million dollars.”

Tom had this problem of getting up late in the morning and was always late for

work. His boss was mad at him and threatened to fire him if he didn’t do

something about it. So Tom went to his doctor who gave him a pill and told him

to take it before he went to bed.

Tom slept well and in fact beat the alarm in the morning. He had a lei-

surely breakfast and drove cheerfully to work. “Boss,” he said, “The pill actually

worked!”

“That’s all fine” said the boss. “But where were you yesterday?”

What kind of day will tomorrow be? To find out what the stars say, read the fore-cast given for your birth sign.

For Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2015ARIES(March 21 to April 19)A female acquaintance will surprise

you today. Alternatively, you might meetsomeone who is a real character —someone unusual and different. Cool!

TAURUS(April 20 to May 20)News from an authority figure might

surprise you today. This person mightknow something personal about yourprivate life. Whatever happens, keepyour cool.

GEMINI(May 21 to June 20)A sudden opportunity to travel some-

where might fall into your lap today.Conversely, a planned trip might be can-celled. In other words, travel plans areup in the air!

CANCER(June 21 to July 22)Something related to shared property,

inheritances or debt might catch you offguard today. Be prepared. Make friendswith your bank account. Know what ishappening.

LEO(July 23 to Aug. 22)A close friend or partner might sur-

prise you today with unexpected news ordemands that the relationship change insome way. Give yourself time to absorbwhat is said and think things over. Guardagainst knee-jerk reactions.

VIRGO(Aug. 23 to Sept. 22)Your work routine will be interrupted

by computer crashes, canceled meetings, staff shortages or equipment break-downs. Just cope as best you can, andgrin and bear it.

LIBRA(Sept. 23 to Oct. 22)This is an accident-prone day for your

children or kids you work with, whichmeans you must be vigilant. Know

AQUARIUS(Jan. 20 to Feb. 18)You feel independent today. You don’t

want anyone telling you what to do.(That’s nothing new.) Stay light on yourfeet, so you can jump either way.

PISCES(Feb. 19 to March 20)It’s hard to settle down and feel con-

tent today, because you have that feelingyou’re waiting for the other shoe to drop.Invariably, it will be ugly and in thewrong size. Oh well.

Canadian Maple leaF Flag raised

For nearly a century canada had no distinctive national flag. Each time canadians suggested a new symbol to replace the canadian Red Ensign, mod-elled after a British naval flag, there was controversy. Maple leaves, beavers, crosses, crowns — proposi-tions that went nowhere. In 1964 Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson said he’d introduce a new national flag. But opposition leader John Diefenbaker and the Royal canadian Legion wanted to stick with the Red Ensign. Everyone had an opinion before canada finally chose the red and white flag with the maple leaf. on Feb. 15, 1965, for the first time in the coun-try’s 98-year history, canadians raise an official national flag. At noon on Parliament Hill, RcMP constable Joseph secours, 26, lowers the Red Ensign and hoists the new Maple Leaf atop the Peace Tower in ottawa. canadians across the country and abroad do the same. In many of the official ceremonies, members of the canadian Army and Royal canadi-an navy have the honour of raising the new flag.

• The federal government suggests canadians use official flag etiquette, including a list of proper ter- minology:• The halyard is the rope that raises and lowers the flag.• The fly is the half side farthest from the halyard. • The hoist is the closest half. • The upper half of the hoist, called the canton, is the area of highest honour.• A finial is a decorative ornament, such as a crown, at the top of the flagpole. • officially, a flag flies at half-mast to show respect for someone who has died. canadian government flag etiquette states that half-mast rather than half-staff is the correct terminology. American government eti-quette states the opposite.• The official name of the canadian flag is the national Flag of canada.

A teacher wanted his students to improve their spelling skills. so, he decided to have each of them come up to the front of the class and tell the class about their fathers’ profession or trade and to spell such profession or trade. The teacher called up Johnny as the first student, and Johnny said, “My father is a baker, and you spell it B-A-K-E-R. If my father was here today, he would give everyone a cookie.” “Very well,” the teacher said, and called Jim to the front. Jim said, “My father is a banker and you spell it: B-A-n-K-E-R. If he was here today, he would give everyone a quarter. “Great,” said the teacher and called Tim to the front. Tim said: “My father is an electrician, and you spell it: E –E- L -K… E- L- E-K….” Tim was having a hard time spelling, so the teacher said, “Tim, why don’t you sit and think about the spelling for a few minutes. In the mean-time, we’ll have Peter come up and tell us about his father.” Peter said, “My father is a bookie: B-o–o-K-I-E. And if my father was here today he would bet, 9 out of 10 that Tim would not spell ELEcTRI-cIAn.”
