• The EU is a unique economic and political partnership between 27 European countries that together cover much of the continent.

• It was created in the aftermath of the Second World War. The first steps were to foster economic cooperation: the idea being that countries who trade with one another become economically interdependent and so more likely to avoid conflict. The result was the European Economic Community (EEC), created in 1958, and initially increasing economic cooperation between six countries: Belgium, Germany, France, Italy, Luxembourg and the Netherlands. Since then, a huge single market has been created and continues to develop towards its full potential.

• The EU motto The EU motto • "United in diversity""United in diversity" is the motto of the European

Union.• It signifies how Europeans have come together, in the

form of the EU, to work for peace and prosperity, while at the same time being enriched by the continent's many different cultures, traditions and languages.

• The European Flag• The European flag is the symbol not only of the European Union but also of

Europe's unity and identity in a wider sense.• The European flag consists of 12 golden stars in a circle on a blue

background. The stars symbolize the ideals of unity, solidarity and harmony among the peoples of Europe.

• Countries in EuropeThey are divided into • 27 EU member countries, • 6 countries which have applied for EU

membership (candidate countries• potential candidate countries) • other countries.

My life in the European Union

Work permits• Work permits are never required for self-employed people

in the EU.

• If you are planning to look for work in a country that still has restrictions on access to its labour market, it is worth finding out what the procedures are there before applying for a work permit or to have your unemployment benefits paid there.

• There may also be restrictions on transferring your unemployment benefits there.

• You are advised to contact the public employment service in the country where you are going.

• If you need additional information you can contact a European employment adviser.

School systems in the EU• If you are moving to a new EU country with school-age children, be

aware that the school system in your new home country may be very different from what you are used to.

• In some countries, for example, children are separated very early into academic or vocational streams.

• The Owens family were moving from Wales to France with their children aged 9, 12 and 17. Their eldest was one year into her A levels – the UK school-leaving qualification, for which students typically take 3 subjects over two years.

• On finding that the French school-leaving qualification varied greatly from A levels – typically involving exams in twelve subjects – the Owens felt it was best for their eldest child to continue with A levels (in an international school near their new home town in France) while they enrolled the two youngest in the local French school.

Institutions• European Parliament representing EU citizens and

is directly elected by them

• Council of the European Union (Council of Ministers), representing each Member State

• European Commission, which represents the general interests of the EU

• Court of Justice, which takes care of compliance with European laws

• European Court of Auditors checks the financing of EU activities

What is the European Union anthem?

• The melody used to symbolize the EU comes from the Ninth Symphony composed in 1823 by Ludwig Van Beethoven, when he set music to the "Ode to Joy", Friedrich von Schiller's lyrical verse from 1785.
