What does the research say about Shared Reading?
Shared reading is more than just reading aloud, though. It is a collaborative learning activity that engages children, is interactive, encourages analytic talk and higher order thinking, and is far more valuable than simply reading without providing opportunities for questions and discussion. Finally, it is an instructional approach in which the teacher explicitly models the strategies and skills of proficient readers (Mariotti, 2014).
Taberski (1998) points out, teachers should not leave student learning to chance. If problems or confusions are seen when students are working individually or in groups, then those should be explored further during whole-class shared reading.
Studies suggest that it is the quality of the shared reading experience that determines its effectiveness in nurturing literacy skills. More crucial than whether the parents read to the child every day or less often, is the extent of the child’s active participation in these situations (Crain-Threson & Dale, 1992).
Numerous researchers discuss the value of using multiple modes to develop understanding of academic language, especially with English-language learners. Tactile and kinesthetic activity provides other modes besides language for expressing understanding (Kesler, 2010).
Using the same text for five days in a shared reading approach not only enabled special needs students, English Language Learners, and other struggling readers to increase fluency and accuracy in oral reading but also empowered them to deepen their comprehension and their understanding of the implicit messages within the narrative through reading excerpts closely (Waters, 2014).
With older children, shared reading utilizes many of the same features but may use materials that include short stories, poetry, newspaper or magazine articles, and portions of chapter books. The overall purpose of shared reading remains the same: to develop interest, vocabulary and concepts, background knowledge, and reading strategies/skills (Mariotti, 2014).
We have a small window of opportunity in Kindergarten and First Grade and we don’t want to let the moment pass without giving children what they need to succeed. Don’t let Shared Reading be that forgotten element. If you find the time for Shared Reading, you’ll be extremely satisfied with the results.
