Patrons, Sponsors and Benefactors are those who consider our high objectives worthy of backing andwould like to make a donation to our efforts through the American Artists Fund, the charitable, educational adjunct of the AAPL. Coherent fine art urgently needs the solid support of American artpatrons.

CREATED IN 1928 BY DEDICATED ARTISTS OF STATURE FOR THE PROTECTION OFARTISTS’ INTERESTS, AND TRADITIONAL REALISM IN AMERICAN ART.

THE AMERICAN ARTISTSPROFESSIONAL LEAGUE

In January 1928, F. Ballard Williams,Assistant Treasurer of the National Academyof Design in New York, called a meeting offifteen members of the Salmagundi Club. Thepurpose: to discuss the need for a nationalorganization to meet the increasing interests intraditional realism in American art. Mostattending were prominent academicians oftheir day. The attendees all agreed that anorganization designed to protect artists’interests and promote traditional American artwas necessary and The American ArtistsProfessional League (AAPL) was born.

The AAPL first focused on the issue ofobtaining commissions of official portraits forAmerican Artists. By using its nationalstature, the AAPL influenced a rider to aCongressional Bill stipulating that all officialportraits paid for with taxpayers’ dollars wereto be painted by American artists, a fact thatremains in effect to this day.

Another milestone for the organization wasthe improvement of the chemical and physicalpurity of artists’ pigments. By securing a fundfrom the Carnegie Corporation EndowmentFund, a program of color pigment research wasestablished for the AAPL. It was completed in1932, making the AAPL the country’s leadingauthority on artists’ pigments at that time. TheAAPL was also instrumental in establishingand securing the U.S. Bureau of Standardsoriginal set of government-sponsored standardsfor artists’ colors, updated in 1962.

In its ongoing effort to promote and encourageartists specializing in realistic art forms, the AAPLhas staged a Grand National Exhibition for over 70years. Each year, hundreds of applicants from all 50states in all media submit their work for review by aselection committee consisting of professional artistsin the fields of oil, watermedia, pastel and graphicsand sculpture.

By Board resolution in 1958, the AAPL createdthe American Artists Fund, an arm of theorganization specifically designed for educationaland charitable purposes. Through private andcorporate donations and contributions to the Fund, the AAPL sponsors its Grand National Exhibitionand awards scholarships to college level studentsstudying American art. This year, the AAPL willaward over $15,000 in prizes to exhibitors and hasmarked $2,000 for college scholarships.

The AAPL, with approximately 1,000 membersnationwide, is headquartered at the SalmagundiClub, 47 Fifth Avenue, New York, New York 10003,
