Artist’s Statement:My paintings are about the rhythm and energy of the

urban landscape: motion, repetition, color, gesture and atmosphere are my points of departure. I attempt to capture the essence of objects and places, with a form of realism that is expressive, rather than simply a recording of what I see.

• Motion – the city is not a static environment, motion keeps viewers engaged and invites them to explore the composition.

• Repetition• Color• Gesture• Atmosphere

• Motion• Repetition –

repeating shapes, colors, textures, and lighting patterns reinforce the sense of movement through the composition.

• Color• Gesture• Atmosphere

Page 5: Salmagundi Demo

• Motion• Repetition• Color – the colors of

the city are unique, I choose a limited palette of burnt umber, titanium white, cobalt, alizarin and yellow ochre, to capture the vibrancy of the city.

• Gesture• Atmosphere

Page 6: Salmagundi Demo

• Motion• Repetition• Color• Gesture – gesture

relates not only to figures, but to buildings, taxis, light poles and all the other elements of the urban landscape. Mood is often conveyed through gesture.

• Atmosphere

Page 7: Salmagundi Demo

• Motion• Repetition• Color• Gesture• Atmosphere – this is

perhaps the most intangible element. Atmosphere not only refers to the lighting and weather conditions present, but more to the mood and tone of the painting.
