President’s Message

Dear Quilting Friends,

I am still smiling at the memory of family and friends praising me for “running” for guild president. There was no running involved, but if I had been asked to state my platform as a candidate, here’s what I would promise to encourage:

Shorter guild meetings (except during quilt show season).

Longer show and tells.

More “I am going to try that!”

Less “I could never do that.”

More “I finished!”

Less “It’s not very good.”

More “What kind of work do you like to do?”

More “How did you do that?”

More “Let’s go check it out.”

More “I’m taking that class.”

More announcements and reminders about quilt events in our area (I’ll need your help).

I can’t guarantee all of these promises, but I can encourage. We have a common love – quilts. Let’s celebrate that enthusiasm together throughout the year. Happy New Year.

WINTER 2019 RETREAT NEWS

“Sew Hung-Over” is coming to a retreat near you, in March, 2019!

We will be “Sew Hung-Over” after celebrat-

ing our Wonderful Quilt Show, and will be recuperating at

Dayspring Episcopal Conference Center in Ellenton.

Four full days to Sew, Relax, Have Fun (and Choco-

late)!

Mark your calendar for March 28, 29, 30, & 31, 2019.

Dayspring has changed their policy this year,

and we will need to have a minimum of 8 attendees staying overnight,

as the conference center is designed for over night guests,

not just day-stitchers. So, please consider joining us

overnight for the weekend! You won’t regret it!

See this newsletter for registration.

Get your space reserved today!

"Reminder: the Guild website address is on the back of your membership card."

Mystery Quilt!

Delores Simpson was contacted by a small Guild in California. They were given a quilt to donate to charity. They noticed an elabo-rate label on it, listing the names of the Sew n Sews cottage group in 1989. If anyone has a con-nection to these stitchers and would like to have the quilt returned, please contact Delores @ cell#941-726-7497.

Thank You

I would like to thank the membership for honoring me with 2018 Member of the Year. I

am so humbled and know for a fact that no one member does very much without the help of so many other members. I thank everyone with whom I have had the pleasure of working over

the past few years. Each of you is a treasure to our guild and to me. I am looking forward to the next Friendship Knot Quilters’ Guild adventure

and continuing to meet fun people, make friends and volunteer alongside you. Happy 2019 and Happy Quilting!

“Cats & Dogs – Dogs & Cats”

Monday, January 21, 2019 Sarasota Community Church, 4041 Bahia Vista Street

` These blocks are pieced blocks done Hoochy style and made into great wall hangings and quilts. Color and fun are all part of this great workshop that lets you make flowers quickly and in a fun way. Then when they are done, you have the option of adding buttons for centers and eyes and other fun things in the garden. You will make as many different flowers and at least one bird, as the class time allows. These quilts have a “WOW” factor and are loads of fun to do and to enjoy making. See what creativity, color and exploring design can do for a great quilt!

Mary Lou has new flower patterns to show you this year also; you’ll LOVE the fun of all of this!

This class is from Mary Lou’s new Book "Hoochy Two-chy" for those that want to piece a dog or cat quilt. Funny dogs or

cats that can be repeated into one great quilt or just one for a pil-low or wall-hanging. These are whimsical and fun and your friends will love them too! This class is probably not for a very

new beginner.

Each block has no measurements and you choose how big or how small you would like to make the animal. By choosing an average size for the body, you adjust the other parts to fit. To be really out of the box you can make heads small or larger and long legs or short legs etc. It is Out of the Box and it is loads of fun.

2019 Quilt Show News

Cass Bowen, Show Chair

For all the new members of our Guild, this is the information page for our next Friendship Knot Quilters’ Guild Quilt Show that will be held March 8-9, 2019. Each month we have updates on the various projects or aspects of the show. We encourage new members to get involved by making quilts to enter in the show, volunteer for any of the numerous committees, sign-up to do a gift basket for the basket auction, make a set of blocks for block auction or make a small quilt for the mini-quilt auction. Feel free to contact me at any time for more information. My phone number is (941)320-8840 and e-mail is [email protected]. Please visit the 2019 Quilt Show Page on the Friendship Knot Quilters’ Guild website. The NEW WEBSITE (the old website has no information anymore) can be accessed at www.friendshipknotquilters.com. There you will find information on: Important Dates. Committee Chairs. Rules, regulations and definitions for the show including Categories and Registration Form. Quidelines for the Block Auction, Mini-Quilt Auction, and Challenge Quilt. Donor Quilt with contact information for tickets. Quilt Show Vendors. Quilt Show Judge. Quilt Appraisal Services. Volunteer Sign-Up Forms for Committee Chairs. Consignment Entry Forms.

Deadlines for FKQG Meeting - January 21, 2019 We are fast approaching the final stretch before the show in March. January 21, 2019, the Guild general meeting, signifies three deadlines. The first deadline is 2019 Membership dues must be paid on or before that date in order to enter a quilt in the show (must also have been a member in 2018). The second deadline is the registration form and pictures for quilt entries. Registrations may be hand delivered at this guild meeting. If mailed, they must be postmarked by January 19st. Please make sure you have TWO registration forms and TWO 4x6” pictures (member’s name and quilt cate-gory on back of photos) for each entry along with the entry fee of $8 judged, $5 non-judged. If you are entering more than one quilt, you may write one check for all entries. Please make sure the regis-tration form is signed. The third deadline is the Challenge quilts. They must be brought to this meeting and turned in to Jann Nohe. They will be displayed at the February meeting for judging by the membership. If you wish to have your Challenge quilt judged or non-judged, please follow the guidelines for registration. It is our intention to display all of the Challenge quilts at the show even if they are not judged, space allowed.

Gift Basket Boutique Karla Lynch

Ok everyone, we are getting down to the nitty gritty! The Quilt Show is 67 days from January 1st! That will fly by. I need to know if you are doing a basket and what that basket is going to be.

Page 6: President s Message Membership Report · 2019-01-07 · Page 1 January 2019 Friendship Knot Quilters’ Guild, Inc. Newsletter of the Friendship Knot Quilters’ Guild, Inc. Sarasota,

I'm in my new house. I have lots of empty baskets. Let me know. If you can't think of what to do, I have loads of ideas. The last show we had 42 baskets. I only know about four right now. I'm in panic mode! Call me. My new number is 941-212-6036, email is the same [email protected].

Mini-Quilt Auction

We are accepting small quilts for the Mini-Quilt Auction at every meeting until the quilt show. Helen Lucas, our Mini-Quilt Chair, is counting on you. We would like to have 50 per day for the auc-tion. Check the guidelines on the website for the mini-quilts. We need many, many quilts.

Block Auction Karen Clark, Tommy Fitzsimmons, Lynn Purple, and Linda Swanson

Thanks to one of our more prolific members, we now have 25 sets of blocks toward our goal of 40. Now that the holiday is over, we hope all of you will get to work and put us over the top of our goal at the January meeting. Keep those block sets coming. The Quilt Show section on the website has the guidelines for both the mini-quilts and blocks sets. We look forward to receiving all the beautiful mini- quilts and block sets that you are working on.

Donor Quilt Elva Farrell

Many, many thanks to all who volunteered to help at the Mancuso show the end of the month. It should be a great show and a good opportunity for us to promote our show in March as well as sell tickets for our quilt. If you didn’t get your name on the schedule and would be willing to work a shift we could still use help the last shift (2:30-4:45) on Friday, February 1 and also the last shift on Satur-day, February 2. To add your name to the schedule email me at [email protected]. There are other events that need volunteers too. We plan to be at Alma Sue’s on Saturday, Jan-uary 12th and again on Saturday, February 9th. There will be morning and afternoon shifts. To add your name to either of these schedules email me at [email protected]. Another opportunity is to show our quilt at the AQS show in Daytona. This is the week-end before our show but if anyone plans to go to the show and would offer a couple hours of volunteer time I will make the arrangements. Again, if you could help in Daytona email me at [email protected]. And, finally, the Quilts in Paradise show March 8th & 9th. We will need volunteers for both days. If you don’t have a full schedule of volunteer time at the show please consider the quilt ticket table. There will be volunteer sign-up sheets at the guild meetings.

Book and Magazine Donations Bev Wiberg

Gather all the books and magazines you no longer need and bring them to our table on set-up day, Thursday, March 7th. This is a painless way to contribute to the financial success of our show. Please tie similar magazines in stacks of 5. Please, no Quilters’ Newsletter Magazines—they do not sell. Thanks in advance for your contributions and please do not bring your magazines to the meetings ahead of the show. I cannot store them.

Shelter Bed Buddy Workshop

Jane Sanks

Well, we did it! At our December meet-ing, we completed enough beds to top last year’s total of 1004. We made 1014 beds in 2018. Congratulations to the hardest working group of people I have ever met. And we had fun. We got to the workshop early, jumped in and did not stop until we ran out of stuffing materials. When we finished counting, we were over the top. All beds were delivered so I know there are shelter ani-mals sleeping happily on comfy new, clean beds in our shelters. Thank you to all of you who help by contributing material and quilting scraps for us to use. We could not accomplish this wonderful project with-out your help. You may call me for more information: Jane Sanks (941) 923-4240 or (941) 726-2849. If you prefer, you could also send an email to [email protected].

Fidget Quilts Cathy Lane

In between finishing quilts for the upcoming show and enjoying Florida’s idea of winter weather, please try to find time to work on a Fidget Quilt. The little quilts (aim for 18 by 24 inches) are made for the restless hands of dementia patients. The fiddling embellishments – zippers, ribbon, rick-rack, Velcro, lace, pockets, buttons, etc. – give the patients something to manipulate. Lots of textures stimulate and calm the senses. More information is on our guild website and lots of exam-ples are on the internet. Turn in completed quilts to Cathy Lane.

Thank you, Crazy Patchers Cathy Lane

Thank you, Crazy Patchers, for hosting a lovely Holiday Party for the Guild. The room was beautifully decorated. Members enjoyed a chicken dinner and pie while visiting with Guild friends. Raffles raised $486.00 for the All Faiths Food Bank. Cheers were heard when Katie Metheny was named 2018 Friendship Knot Quilters’ Guild Member of the Year. Everyone had a great time.
