    Treasurer’s Report

Highlights for September were our Annual Competition, the completion of the rear stairs, the purchase and installation of the CCTV cameras, and ceiling fans in the Auditorium. With an additional judge this year, the cost of the competition increased to $766, compared with $406 last year. The expenditure was well worth it, given the quality of the entries, the judges’ feedback, and the delicious morning tea after the Awards Presentation Ceremony.

Some money was saved on the rear stairs project, with the painting being done by three Committee members (Bob McGeechan, Mike Dodson and myself). Equipment expenditure included $5,566 for the cameras and associated equipment, $1,197 for a new refrigerator (the old one decided to break down 2 days before the competition judging), and a Stihl chainsaw. The ceiling fans were funded by a grant of

$1848 from the Lord Mayor’s Suburban Initiative Fund. Our thanks go to our Patron, Cr Ian McKenzie, for supporting the application. Total income for the month was $7573, and total expenditure was $14,315, leaving current cash balance of $29,164 in the bank. Brian Creese Treasurer

SUGGESTIONS. Have you come across a new book or DVD in a public library or in a magazine

that you have found helpful? Would it be worth sharing with others by having it available in our WSQ Library? We welcome suggestions. Our Library has a generous budget each year, and we are ready to use it to add worthwhile items to our catalogue. HE WITH THE MOST TOOLS WINS! MAYBE! The introduction to a book we have in the library was pointed out to me recently. “The Complete Guide to Sharpening” by Leonard Lee. “Woodworkers tend to believe that the only thing separating them from the masters of the craft is another piece of equipment”. As a manufacturer and retailer of tools, the author may have had good reasons for encouraging us to buy more, but he was seized with the relationship between

sharp tools and good woodworking. “Although good sharpening technique alone is not sufficient to make you a master of the craft it can allow you to maximize whatever innate skill you have”. The ‘Complete Guide’ and others in the Library are a good source of information. We are fortunate to have occasional Saturday demonstrations on the techniques of sharpening. The RM School of Woodworking offers a Grinding and Sharpening Course under the direction of our President Rob McKee. And, help is always at hand - ask for guidance if needed. Be sharp about it! New Members

It has been a good month for new members again. Please welcome the following:

    YungNan Tung of Kangaroo Point

    Gil Francis of Greenslopes

    Rosie Thornton of Boronia Heights.

Numbers are still going well. At this stage last year we had 20 new members. This year so far we have 31 new members and 4 Honorary members. That is great. I Hope to see even more by the end of the year

Please ensure that you greet our new members and make them welcome when you meet them at the club house.

KPU Woodturning Group Celebrates 10 Years

In 2003, the Woodturners Society of Queensland (WSQ), under the leadership of Jack Turner, was recognised as an ideal venue for patients from the Keith Payne Unit (KPU) to participate in a practical and therapeutic activity that would support their mental health needs. The majority of KPU patients are veterans who are unable to return to their work role, due to the symptoms of mental and physical illness. The first participant to undertake this new activity was long time WSQ member Richard Pacey.

    First Participant and Coordinator

On 24 September 2013, an afternoon tea was held at WSQ, to celebrate the 10 year anniversary of the KPU Woodturning Group and to formally acknowledge the outstanding commitment from the volunteer tutors at WSQ. The Woodturning Group has been highly motivating for patients and this can be greatly attributed to the generous support of WSQ.

The quality of life of the 130+ KPU patients, who have participated in the Woodturning Group over the past 10 years, has subjectively improved and WSQ membership has increased. At least 20 group participants have become independent members and attended the open workshops on Tuesday mornings.

    Report on the 2013 Competition

Well, the 2013 WSQ Competition has now come and gone. In woodturning vernacular, perhaps we could say “polished and dusted”. This year we almost eclipsed the large number of entries into the 2012 (155 entries). This year there were 145 wonderful entries across some 16 categories from 26 members. We were fortunate to secure the services of four excellent judges who worked in two groups and individually carefully accessed each entry in accordance with judging criteria. Judging started at 9.00am and concluded shortly before 5.00pm. Ken Rays (Redcliffe), Laurie Gwynne, Geoff Scorey and Eric Cameron (all from the Bayside club) provided excellent feedback specifically on each entry and more generally at the awards Presentation on the following Saturday 21 September. They were very impressed with the high standard of the entries with Ken and Laurie (who were judges last year) specifically

noting a marked increase in the standard of turning (particularly in design and finish) over last year. We express our appreciation to the judges for their efforts not only in judging the entries but in coming to our Presentation the following Saturday to share their experience and observations with members. Many members felt this was invaluable feedback. The Presentation morning was very well attended with winners in each category being presented with their certificates. The WSQ was fortunate in having our Patron and local Councillor, Ian McKenzie available to present the perpetual trophies. The winners of these trophies were:

Max Morris Shield - Dan Woodward

Max Ma.Lu.Ca. Trophy - Dan Woodward

David Thomas Memorial Trophy - Bob Hains

Ben Flack Memorial Trophy - Charlie Edwards

Moreton Machine Tools Encouragement Trophy - Mick Phythian

Ray Hall Memorial Trophy - Bob Hains

Our congratulations go to all awardees and trophy winners. The standards set were high and will make the 2014 Competition an even better showcase for the skills and expertise in the WSQ membership. I would like to thank sincerely the other members of the Competition Committee, Charlie Edwards, Rick Harrison and Phil Harris, who have contributed their efforts and experience to make the 2013 Competition a success. I would also like to acknowledge the efforts of Mike Dodson and Ken Groves with the running of the Competition and thank them for this. Many hands do make things work! Neil Turner Demo at Pine Street - 26 & 27 October

Neil Turner is one of Australia’s leading woodturners. He is recognised internationally for his woodturning skill and artistic ability. The Management Committee has selected Neil to be our international demonstrator for 2013, and have negotiated extensively to arrange his visit to our club.

Woodturning magazine ran a 5 page article on Neil in the January 2013 (no 249) edition. If you have any reservations about whether or not you should attend

this demonstration I suggest you have a look at this article and then get yourself booked in for this weekend before it is booked out. I’m sure it is going to be a very informative and interesting couple of days. The costs for the weekend are:

Members - $30 per Day or $50 for both days.

Non Members - $35 per Day or $60 for both days.

This is an opportunity too good to miss. I strongly urge you to attend this demonstration.

    WSQ Publications

    Hi Folks,

Recently it came to my attention that a member, who had been with the club quite a while, was unaware that Society

By Laws even existed. Which begs the question, how many other members (aside from the Management Committee

perhaps) are in a similar position? My guess is the answer is probably “many”. So then, let me address this situation

by listing, with a brief outline of the contents of each, the various WSQ booklets which have been published to date

and which, I would add, are available for perusal from our Library for those who may be interested. They are as

    follows:-

Building for the Future: A Chronology of the Pine Street Extensions: The title says it all really. This booklet documents the long path of the building of the extension containing Auditorium, Library, New Kitchen, Refurbished Toilets and Basement under from original conception in early 2006 through to official opening in March 2012.

By Laws of the Woodturners Society of Queensland Inc: This contains rules subsidiary to constitutional provisions in the areas of Premises, Equipment, Competition etc. together with a Schedule of current Society payments, fees and charges.

Constitution of the Woodturners Society of Queensland Inc: This is the principal document of the Society, which sets out the rules governing the Society's functions and prescribes how the Management Committee shall manage the business and affairs of the Society. It is integral to WSQ being an incorporated association under Queensland legislation.

Handbook for WSQ Office Bearers and Other Position Holders: This has been prepared to provide information on the duties and responsibilities of incoming and current individual members of the Management Committee as well as others such as Convenors and Assistant Convenors, Newsletter Editor, Librarian etc.

Workplace Health and Safety Risk Management Program: This booklet details the structured approach which the Society takes to ever important workplace health and safety through its Risk Management Program. This incorporates elements such as Workplace Health and Safety Policy, Workshop Code of Conduct as well as identifying a range of hazards and risks and the measures to control same as documented in the Risk Register.

Safety Booklet: This seeks to provide guidance to WSQ members in the use of machinery and equipment used in the Pine Street workshop. Copies are provided to all new members on joining the Society via the “New Members Kit“.

WSQ Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity Plan: This document is primarily intended to provide guidance to the Management Committee in the event of a naturally occurring, or man-made, disaster and especially the actions to be taken in the recovery phase following such a disaster. That said, I'm sure other members will find the booklet of some interest.

WSQ Management Committee Who? What ? Why ?: This booklet is linked to the Handbook for WSQ Office Bearers and explores whole – of - Committee responsibilities in areas such as Building and Grounds, Community Involvement, Finance, Membership / Members' Services and Society Governance.

In conclusion, I would just mention that the above publications are of course reviewed by the Management Committee

from time to time to ensure their currency and relevance to the Society and its members.

    Letters to the Editor

Hi Geoff, Rob, Just a quick hello from Italy. Yesterday we had the opportunity to see a FOSSIL FOREST in the small village of Dunarobba in Central Italy. It consists of many tree trunks dating back to the Pliocene Age ; 2 million years old. This paleontological discovery consists of more than 40 trees found in the same position they had when living (in situ), covered by muddy and sandy deposits, which allowed their geological preservation. The preservation is exceptional as it is a kind of sub- fossilization of the timbers due to the clayey sediments. The interesting thing is that they are Not Petrified (as in stone), but remain as timber (albeit very old

    and fragile timber).

The trees are of a coniferous species, now extinct, but the genus of this species still exists in parts of Asia today. In some regards there is a similarity with the Swamp Kauri timber we find in New Zealand that has been buried for thousands of years in mud and

soil, but is still preserved and used today. The Fossil Forrest of Dunnarobba in Italy is just a little older. I am told that Canada also has some Forrest's of this type ? I have attached a photo which may give some credence to my story. Hope alls well at Pine St. Kind Regards Sue and Bob Thanks Geoff, You may like to add the web address for those doubting Thomases, www.forestafossile.it Regards.....bobk

    Tree of the Month

    Cypress Pine

    White Cypress

Botanical name: Callitris glaucophylla (formerly C. glauca) Other Common Names: Cypress, Cypress Pine. Family name: Cupressaceae. Distribution: White Cypress Pine is a small to medium sized non-rainforest softwood widely distributed across Australia’s dry interior but mainly located in New South Wales and southern Queensland. The trees in the Callitris group have been in Australia for over 250 million years Colour: The heartwood is variegated light yellow to dark brown usually with many small dark knots. The sapwood is pale yellow and relatively wide and irregular. The knots are tight and very hard. White Cypress Pine has a distinctive residual odour which is quite pleasant. It is one of the few timbers in the world to be insect resistant, including termites and marine borers and it also has a strong resistance to fungal attack. Mechanical properties: In kiln dried timber there is a tendency to brittleness and it is not suitable for steam bending. The sapwood is not susceptible to Lyctid borer. Working properties: It is moderately hard to work with hand tools (considering it is a softwood) giving a medium resistance to cutting and a

moderate blunting to tools. Machine working results in a fine finish. Pre drilling for nails and screws is necessary to avoid splitting. There is a tendency to fine surface checking and splitting around knots. Gluing presents few problems despite the oily feel of the timber. White Cypress Pine can be worked to a very high polish and takes most finishes well although finishes tend to mask the odour of the timber. The sanding dust can irritate the mucous membranes. Uses: Very widely used for flooring and one of Australia’s top export timbers. Also used for playground equipment, cladding, exposed structural beams, furniture, fencing and decking. Cypress Oil has been extracted from off-cuts and the resultant oil is being used as a termite inhibitor. Availability: Plentiful. Note: Northern Cypress Pine (Callitris intratropica) is found only in the Northern Territory and north Western Australia. It is stronger than its southern cousins -otherwise it shares similar properties. Black Cypress Pine (Callitris endlicheri) is found in the same locations as White Cypress Pine. It is not as common as the White Cypress Pine but it is identical in its properties- possibly a little less dense. Other related species: C. rhomboidea- Port Jackson Cypress Pine C. macleayana - Stringybark Pine C. preissii - Rottnest Island Cypress C. columellaris - Sand Cypress C. roei - Cypress Pine C. drummondii - Cypress Pine C. oblonga - Pigmy Cypress C. monticola - Steelhead Cypress C. canescens - Cypress Pine
