Price Database—July 2012:  This note provides our regular quarterly update of price levels for a wide range of goods and services in Addis Ababa. As usual, a total of 184 prices have been compiled under nine broad categories and the data collection exercise was conducted in collaboration with  Horizon Ethiopia.  The latest price data reveal double-digit year-on-year price increases for just over half of surveyed goods and services (or 93 out of 184 items). Most prominent among the commodities showing double-digit price increases are construction machinery rentals (i.e., dozers & excavators), local wooden building materials and certain fruits & vegetables (i.e., onions, bananas). More than a third of the items (37 percent) in the survey show year-on-year price declines. Notable year-on-year price declines were observed in certain widely used construction and building materials (i.e., cement & reinforcement bars) and urban land lease prices across town.  On the basis of weights utilized for Addis Ababa’s official price index, we calculate an 18 percent average year-on-year inflation rate for the 184 commodities and services covered in our city-wide survey. This inflation es timate stands close to the 19 pe rcent year-on-year inflation rep orted for Addis Ababa by the Central Statistical Agency for July 2012. L ooking at food price trends alone, our survey shows year-on-year food inflation in Addis Ababa at 32 percent somewhat higher than the 25 percent year-on-year food inflation reported by the CSA during this period.  For the fourth time now, our survey included questions on price expectations for the coming quarter. More specifically, for all 184 prices surveyed, we asked retailers and businesses what price levels they anticipate in about three months time, n amely in October 2012. The survey reveals an expectation of continued price rises for 23 percent (or 42 out of 184) of surveyed commodities and services. The expected quarterly inflation rate for all products is in the single- digits, at 2.5 percent, held down largely by an expected negative inflation of rate of -6.1 percent anticipated for food items, understandably due to seasonal effects. As this is only a quarterly figure, however, the implied inflation expectation from our business survey translates to an annual inflation rat e of about 10 percent (i.e., 2.5 times 4) for the period ahead. This is somewhat lower than Access Capital’s projections of 12 percent year-on-year inflation for end-December 2012 and what we anticipate will be an inflation rate in the low teens for most of 2013.  An electronic version of the price database is available at our website at www.accesscapitalsc.com/research.  August 2012  Access Capital Research

Price Database—July 2012:

This note provides our regular quarterly update of price levels for a wide range of goods and

services in Addis Ababa. As usual, a total of 184 prices have been compiled under nine broad

categories and the data collection exercise was conducted in collaboration with Horizon Ethiopia.

The latest price data reveal double-digit year-on-year price increases for just over half of

surveyed goods and services (or 93 out of 184 items).  Most prominent among the commoditiesshowing double-digit price increases are construction machinery rentals (i.e., dozers &

excavators), local wooden building materials and certain fruits & vegetables (i.e., onions,

bananas).  More than a third of the items (37 percent) in the survey show year-on-year price

declines. Notable year-on-year price declines were observed in certain widely used constructionand building materials (i.e., cement & reinforcement bars) and urban land lease prices across

town.

On the basis of weights utilized for Addis Ababa’s official price index, we calculate an 18 percent

average year-on-year inflation rate for the 184 commodities and services covered in our city-wide

survey. This inflation estimate stands close to the 19 percent year-on-year inflation reported for

Addis Ababa by the Central Statistical Agency for July 2012. Looking at food price trends alone,

our survey shows year-on-year food inflation in Addis Ababa at 32 percent somewhat higher than

the 25 percent year-on-year food inflation reported by the CSA during this period.

For the fourth time now, our survey included questions on price expectations for the coming

quarter.  More specifically, for all 184 prices surveyed, we asked retailers and businesses whatprice levels they anticipate in about three months time, namely in October 2012. The survey

reveals an expectation of continued price rises for 23 percent (or 42 out of 184) of surveyed

commodities and services. The expected quarterly inflation rate for all products is in the single-

digits, at 2.5 percent, held down largely by an expected negative inflation of rate of -6.1 percent

anticipated for food items, understandably due to seasonal effects. As this is only a quarterly

figure, however, the implied inflation expectation from our business survey translates to an

annual inflation rate of about 10 percent (i.e., 2.5 times 4) for the period ahead. This is somewhat

lower than Access Capital’s projections of 12 percent year-on-year inflation for end-December2012 and what we anticipate will be an inflation rate in the low teens for most of 2013.
