Welcome

MAKE A BOOKING

We invite you to take your students on an unforgettable island adventure right in the heart of Sydney Harbour. A short ferry ride from Circular Quay, World-Heritage-listed Cockatoo Island is located at the junction of the Parramatta and Lane Cove Rivers.

The Cockatoo Island Education Program offers students the opportunity to step back in time and explore one of Sydney’s most exciting locations through engaging primary and secondary programs. With an indigenous history preceding the last 175 years of convict, industrial and maritime heritage, Cockatoo Island has become one of Sydney’s most unique and celebrated historical sites.

The Cockatoo Island education programs are designed to meet the requirements of several key syllabus areas of the NSW Curriculum. They have been developed to foster inquiry-based learning and to provide a fun and interactive learning experience for students.

We are particularly excited to offer a new Secondary History Program for Stage 6; A Social and Maritime Case Study, which explores how the island’s dockyard facilities became part of worldwide historical processes involving international diplomacy, wars, migration and social development. This program complements our existing Stage 4 and 5 Program Site Studies which reveal insights into the major social, political and technological progress of Australian society.

We look forward to welcoming you and your students to Cockatoo Island to experience Australian history come to life.

This excursion is suitable for students in years K-4. It aligns with the History syllabus in Stages 1 and 2, and the Creative Arts syllabus for Stages ES1-2. It also has particular relevance to the suggested Stage 2 HSIE unit of work ‘British Colonisation’.

Students will return to the convict era through dress up and role-play as characters from the Island’s colourful past. Whilst exploring the stunning site of Cockatoo Island students will gain understanding into the impact of the First Fleet,

the ramifications for the indigenous population and the rapid changes and developments between 1788 and 1869 when the first penal establishment on Cockatoo Island closed. This interactive tour will activate children’s imaginations, encouraging them to engage with and interpret the island’s stories. The Convict Times tour focuses on skills of historical enquiry and will support children in recognising the difference and importance of physical evidence and primary and secondary sources.

This tour is suitable for Stage 2 HSIE students, particularly linking to the suggested unit of work ‘Places: Then, Now and Tomorrow’.

Through engaging character role-play from different periods of Cockatoo Island’s history, the Then, Now & Tomorrow tour encourages children to work together to investigate and share the stories that make up the island’s

changing face. From its time as a prison, a reformatory school, a major shipyard and now a key cultural site, students will identify its historical uses as an island and the processes and community actions that led to its heritage status. This tour brings together historical and environmental concerns and equips students with skills to better understand and participate in historical enquiry.

Cockatoo Island offers students the unique opportunity to identify the many machines that feature as part of its distinct industrial landscape. The Machines tour introduces children to the concepts of simple and

compound machines and encourages them to find examples on the island itself. This tour will help students understand how machines have contributed to technological and social progress and will allow them to put mechanical concepts into a real world context through observation, historical stories, drawing and physical activities.

This tour is suitable for Stage 6 students studying the Modern History and History Extension courses.

Cockatoo Island’s facilities had a much wider significance beyond the locale in which they existed and became part of worldwide historical processes involving international diplomacy, wars, migration and social development. Cockatoo Island is a fascinating opportunity for historical investigation by students because of

the availability of an extensive range of sources and the often controversial, even polarising history of the island community allows students to view events from different perspectives and to develop historical empathy for varying points of view. This tour allows students to immerse themselves in the geography and hardware of otherwise remote historical events.
