Student placement for the 2018-2019 school year

I very much appreciate your awareness of and cooperation with the Vestal Central School Districtrsquos practices regarding parent requests for student placement for the 2018-2019 school year

The establishment of classroom rosters is a complex process It involves professional dialogue between African Road staff on a wide variety of factors including achievement data collected over the course of the previous year(s) These factors include but are not limited to (in no particular order) the

balancing of gender in any one classroom

balancing of studentsrsquo abilities and needs across multiple developmental social and academic areas

design of student groupings to maximize effective instructional practices being implemented by staff (balanced literacy cooperative learning technology integration assessment structures etc)

design of student groupings to maximize the use of support staff including academic intervention service providers special education providers and paraprofessionals

Given these considerations we are unable to accept parent requests for a specific teacher It is the principalrsquos responsibility to finalize all classroom rosters If there are extenuating circumstances that would be necessary to know in placing your child please submit this information in writing to me by May 11 2018 Written information will be reviewed and shared with relevant staff members during the placement process

Classroom assignments will be mailed home in mid-August Please understand that factors such as an enrollment shift in the summer or staff changes could result in a change in your childrsquos class assignment prior to the opening of school

Please accept my sincere thanks for all your feedback and support this year Irsquom honored to be a part of the tradition of excellence here in Vestal and I am looking forward to the start of another great school year

Sincerely Meghan Stenta ARE Principal

Classroom Lessons

This year thanks to a Vestal

School Foundation grant

our Kindergarten First- and Second-grade students will be learning about a self-

regulation program called

The Zones of Regulation

This program is a framework to foster self-regulation and emotional control The curriculum is geared toward

helping students gain skills in consciously regulating their actions which in turn leads to increased control and

problem solving skills The program helps kids recognize and learn when they are in different states called zones

which are represented by different colors that represent road signs My goal by the end of the school year is that all

kids in these grades will be able to identify what zone they are in use strategies to help regulate their emotions and

use these strategies to get them back to a zone where they are able to learn

We have been working on strategies for students for when they get triggered We have learned about sensory

strategies calming strategies and now are learning about thinking strategies These strategies are ways in which to

help students self-regulate their emotions so they are better able to learn Our emphasis has been on deep breathing

exercises with just taking three deep breaths If you see your child practicing deep breathing at home join in Deep

breathing is a strategy and skill that everyone can use We also learned about how big is our problem and how do we react to those problems Ask your Kindergartner first- or second-grader about these lessons These strategies apply to triggers at home as well as at school They are universal And by teaching these lessons I have learned how to

better regulate my own emotions Itrsquos great for everyone

FROM THE READING CORNER

The ARE PTA is sponsoring our Second Annual Cubrsquos Night Out event for preschoolers and their families on Thursday

April 19 One of the goals of this program is to introduce

little ones to our school community a year to two before they

enter kindergarten These positive early childhood

experiences can have a lasting impact on students and their

attitudes about school and learning You as parents are your

childrsquos first teachers and there are things that you can be

doing with your preschooler to help develop a love of

learning and lay the ground work for success in school

Literacy Activities That Help Build Pre-reading Skills

1 Help your child make hisher name using magneticletters Say the names of each letter together

2 Use magnetic letters to make the names of friends or family Begin with simple words like mom or dad You may need to make the word first then have your child make the same word by matching each letter below your word

3 Ask your child to find five things in your home thatbegin with the same letter as hisher name Repeat withother letter sounds

4 Play a game of Letter I Spy Say ldquoI spy something that begins with the letter Brdquo Then your child has to guess the object you chose Once your child has guessed the correct object you trade places and heshe gives the I Spy clue

5 Play a word game together Say ldquoIrsquom going to the park and Irsquom taking a _____rdquo Invite your child to think of a word to complete the sentence that begins with B such as Ball Repeat the game with other locations and sounds such as ldquoIrsquom going to the store and Irsquom going to bring a _____rdquo

6 Play the Alphabet Train Game with your child Help your child arrange magnetic letters in the order of the alphabet Ask himher to point to them as heshe sings the alphabet song

7 Play a rhyming word game together To play you say a word such as hop and your child thinks of a word that rhymes such as top or mop Then let your child think of words for you to rhyme

These activities are intended to be fun Please donrsquot force your child to participate if heshe is not interested Wait a few weeks and try again

Students compare and analyze lwo-dimenstional figures according to their properties and use grid paper to construct two-dimensional figures given a set of criteria

Students move to amore abstract approach when learning area by using the formula for the area of a rectangle as length times width

Along with this learning is the idea of mixed units and how students can use place value as aguide to assist in these converstions

Students learn to conceptualize area as the amount of two-dimensional space in a bounded region using tiling or formulas

Compared to the work in area volume introduces more complexity by adding a third dimension which not only challenges a studenrs spatial structuring but also in the materials used to measure volume These materials may be solid or fluid which require either packing with cubic units or fillingmiddot a shape with liquid to find the volume

Understanding area requires seeing how to decompose shapes into parts and how to move and recon1bine the parts to make simpler shapes Such experiences provide only initial development of area concepts but these key foundations are important for later learning

COUNSELORrsquoS CORNER CONTrsquoD

Students develop the ability known as spatial structuring Students focus solely on the square and build its three-dimensional counterpart the cube After first creating asquare and naming its attributes students are tasked with building acube with only a picture to guide them From this students see a sqaure as a face of the cube

1S1 Gralle

Understanding area requires seeing how to decompose shapes into parts and how to move and recon1bine the parts to make simpler shapes Such experiences provide only initial development of area concepts but these key foundations are important for later learning
