Principal’s Message April, 2015

Virtue of the Month: Justice

“Let Justice flow like a stream, and righteousness like a river

that never goes dry”. – Amos 5:24

The month of March was a very busy one. Students enjoyed many

opportunities including: Pan Am Games Kick Off Assembly with a visit by

PACHI, the Pan Am Mascot, Autism Awareness Dance, Passion Play (grades

6-8), Chess Tournaments, Family Math Night, Scientists in the Schools

Program, and various class trips.

Congratulations to the students who received the Sacrament of

Reconciliation on March 12th. First Holy Communion will be celebrated on

April 25th at 2:00 pm at St. Charles Church. We also look forward to our

Grade 8 students receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation on Saturday, April

11th at 11:00 am.

The virtue for the month of April is JUSTICE. We will celebrate the

Resurrection of Jesus who is the ‘Just’ One who died for the sake of the

‘Unjust’, that He might lead people back to God. Justice is also an important

part of Catholic teaching beyond Christ’s Death and Resurrection. The need

for justice comes from the obligation to respect the dignity of every human

person. This dignity comes from being created in God’s image. Failing to

respect human dignity, including failing to do justice, is a failure to respect

the image of God in others. This is evident in this month’s quote, “Let justice

flow like a stream, and righteousness like a river that never goes dry.” (Amos

5:24).

We will be having Stations of the Cross on Thursday, April 2nd. Each

class will have their own individual time to go and reflect on the Stations of

the Cross.

Wishing you all a very Blessed and Holy Easter!

May God bless,

Mrs. Enza Maggiacomo Principal

Family Math Night at Regina Mundi

On Monday, March 30th, 2015, Regina Mundi hosted a very successful and interactive Family Math Night. Both parents and students participated together in a variety of fun and exciting math activities.

The workshops included: 1. Math is My Business: The students became financial

wizards who participated in financial literacy and learning to invest money earned to build equity with low, medium and high risk investments. (My investment portfolio)

2. Math + Science = Fun: The students started the workshop by sorting interesting objects in different ways – rocks, shells, pinecones, etc. Next, they used math to measure, estimate and count sweet and salty treats to make their own individual trail mix to take home! They mixed and measured yummy marshmallows, pretzels, and cereal. Their timing and measuring skills were put to the test with a homemade rollercoaster and guessing how fast it would roll depending on the height and speed. Finally, fun was had by all rolling dice to play “math golf”. Both parents and students did not want to leave, it was a huge success!

3. The Planet Up Close: The students participated in a fun-filled workshop using magnifying glasses and jeweler’s loupes to classify and sort things. The students learned about symmetry by creating a balancing toy. They explored geometry by making paper flowers bloom and discovering the hidden shapes in the natural world.

Names of participating families went into a draw to win a prize. The grand prize for the evening was an HP Deskjet 3050A and the winner was the Valenti family. Congratulations!!!

This evening was made possible through the Ontario Ministry of Education, Parent Reaching Out Grant (Pro-Grant) and through the generous donations of The Chess and Math Association and Venerello’s Bakery. We would also like to thank the Regina Mundi CSAC and in particular Mrs. D’Ambrosio and Mrs. Belsito for all their dedication, efforts and hard-work planning, organizing and making the evening a great success.

Thank you to everyone who helped make this evening a wonderful experience for everyone involved.

A special Thank you! to our student leaders: Amanda

S. and Cristina V. for spearheading this initiative.

Well done everyone!!

New Legislation Aims to Prevent On-Line Cyberbullying and Exploitation

On March 9, 2015, new legislation has come into effect to

protect all ages of Canadians from on-line cyberbullying

and exploitation on the internet. Named the “Protecting

Canadians from Online Crime Act”, the new law stands up

for victims band helps law enforcement officials better

protect our students.

A website has been created by the Canadian Centre for

Child Protection to help youth who are being exploited by

providing guidance in how to deal with online blackmail.
