SPECIAL AWARDS
It was an April of number crunching as SIS students participated in several mathematics contests, with positive
results.
On 9th April, Lai Pui Shan, Lee Xueh Qi, Pan Xiang Jing and Theofani Ella Bethania Lawono
participated in Sunway University’s A-Levels Maths and Logic Challenge. The students wrote
individual papers in Round 1, and worked in pairs in Round 2 to solve challenging math problems.
Our students competed against 410 students from all over Malaysia.
Success was sweet for Pan Xiang Ming who was a top 20 finisher in
the individual competition.
From 11th -13th April, nearly 60 students sank their numeracy ‘teeth’
in the University of Waterloo Mathematics Competitions. Grade 7
and 8 students attempted the Gauss Competition, while our Grade 9, 10 and 11
students tackled the Fryer, Galois & Hypatia competitions. We are eagerly waiting for
the results to be released by the University of Waterloo.
We thank Ms. Data for coordinating our participation in these competitions.

Vol 4 Issue 2 27 May 2011
The stars came out on 21st April, and oh, did they shine! Take a look at the talented crop of budding artists that
delivered an unforgettable SIS Performance Night. Mr. Gregory , co-organiser with Ms. Shannon, of all the talent
shows at SIS, delivered his swansong to a misty-eyed audience with the poignant words, “Through all the Open
Mics and Performance Nights, Thanks for the soundtrack.”
Thank you, Mr. Gregory
& Ms. Shannon!
You’re our Inspiration!
HAPPENINGS @ SIS HOUSE
Celebrations! SIS House had reason to celebrate as we welcomed the new Resident Executive,
Ms. Noreda Mohd. Nor. Ms. Noreda has quickly taken to the students, describing
them as “intelligent, creative and talented.”
At the monthly SIS House birthdays celebrations, Ms. Noreda was impressed with
the performances from the boarders. This was an initiative introduced recently,
where boarders who were gifted in music were given the opportunity to perform for
their housemates.
With every celebration, the boarders look
forward to the merriment and the occasion to
bond over delicious food and treats.
Ms. Noreda summarises aptly, “At SIS House
we get to mingle with different cultures and
languages, up-close and in person. There is no
substitute for having our meals together, helping each
other and learning to live with different personalities and characters in a peaceful and
secure environment.”
Ms. Noreda concludes, “I am looking forward to contributing creatively to serve the
students and the House for more activities as I progress with them. My goal is to expose the students to new and
productive experiences, and through that, continue the students’ learning at SIS.”
Ms. Noreda can be reached at [email protected] and her mobile (+6)019 3802505 for any enquiries.
We are pleased to announce that we have streamlined our meal packages exclusively for our boarders.
Boarders will continue subscribing to the Meal Plan, which refers to breakfast and dinner meals, which will be
served every day including public and school holidays.
For lunch, boarders are required to select from either one of the value-for-money packages explained below:-
LUNCH Meal Plan - Weekdays package @ RM1,100
This plan present boarders with the security of a satisfying lunch every Monday to Friday. During weekends
(Saturdays & Sundays), and public and school holidays, boarders are free to explore refreshment elsewhere.
LUNCH Meal Plan - Full package @ RM1,650
This option ensures boarders of wholesome meals every day of the week, including public and school holidays.
Regardless of the plan combination, student boarders can be assured that they will continue to enjoy 3 delicious
and nutritionally-balanced meals a day.

SIS IN THE COMMUNITY
Summer Programme Director Visits
On 30th March, SIS was privileged to have Ms. Sue Karzis, Director of Summer Schools, Trinity College, University
of Melbourne visit. SIS students in Grade 10 and 11 were able to learn more about programmes offered at Trinity College. Supported by videos and powerpoint presentations, the Trinity College representatives shared information about summer leadership programmes as well as their pre-university studies. Students were attracted to The Young Leaders Summer School - an intensive two-week programme that gives students an opportunity to taste university life by letting students learn about different parts of the world.

On 28th April, the Grade 11 Biology class went on a field trip to the Carey Island Mangrove Research Centre in
Klang, Selangor. The trip’s objective was to educate and raise awareness among students on eco-conservation, and gain an understanding of the mangrove system and its benefits to mankind. A total of 35 students were given a detailed seminar of the mangrove ecosystem by the R&D Centre personnel. Armed with cameras and a can-do attitude, the students also tested their knowledge of scientific concepts with real life applications. Students also visited the Wildlife Sanctuary and the mangrove forest site. Says graduating
student Gianita Andriana, “The whole experience was eye-opening and educational because we got to test out what we learnt in the classroom. I learnt that ecological preservation is important and the briefing by the Centre’s personnel was really detailed and informative.”

Bright and early on 24th April, 22 motivated and dedicated students from Grades 9 –
11 showed their commitment and devotion to help stop global warming by participating in the Shah Alam River & Trees For Life 2011 campaign. In conjunction with Earth Day, the students chose to demonstrate their support for the environment and their community by planting trees on the Section 13 Shah Alam riverbank. Ms. Litman, avid supporter of SIS’ Green Team praised, “The students never complained about the heat or getting dirty. They worked diligently and productively, and in unison to plant as many seedling trees as was possible on the muddy river bank to help avoid future erosion of the river bank and make a difference in theirs and other’s lives.”

SIS FIELD TRIP DAY 2011
Vol 4 Issue 2 27 May 2011
The 4th SIS Field Trip Day on 21st
April had a novel concept— students were split into their respective grades and sent to various locations in and around the state. The students returned bursting to compare notes on the activities they did and the experiences they had. We asked some students’ and staff’s for their trip reviews.
“We gained lots of fun facts, admired the wildlife and improved our French by practising describing the animals
and their names. The trip was fun and gave us some down time to learn outside the classroom.”
- Amanda Darshini Selvarajah, Grade 9, visited Bukit Nanas Forest Reserve and the National Zoo.
“This is the first time I’ve gotten so close to feeding and observing birds! We learnt to appreciate them in their natural surroundings. The best part was watching the bird show and seeing how intelligent the birds were.” - Ernest Dagenhart , Grade 7, visited Kuala Lumpur Bird Park, Deer Park and Hibiscus Garden.
“This trip had everything — fun, from attempting to weave nipah leaves; educational, from viewing the historical
weapons at the Tin Museum and enriching, from interacting with the aborigine children at the Village.
Everyone should have a trip like this! ” - Mohamed Fayed bin Abdul Rahman, Grade 11, visited
Carey Island ‘Mah Meri’ (Orang Asli tribe) Village and Sultan Abdul Aziz Royal Gallery.
“Students remained extremely well behaved, and represented SIS in a respectable fashion. Ms. Data, Mr. Clayworth, Ms. Litman and I would like to extend a big thank you to all of the students for their excellent participation and behaviour during the trip!” - Mr. Marcus Brims, Teacher, visited National Museum and Kuala Lumpur City Centre (KLCC) Park.
