Principal’s Report

Dear Parents and Carers,

Music Count Us In 7 November 2019 Last week, the students and staff participated in the annual Music Count Us In (MCUI) event. MCUI is Australia’s largest school initiative, and it plays a vital role in fostering music education in school. The program culminates in a National Celebration Day when more than half a million students sing the same song, on the same day, at the same time. It is a song written by students, for students. This year’s Program Song was called ‘We Are’. What are the benefit of music education? Decades of research shows that learning music can help students’ self-confidence, self-discipline and team work. There are also strong links between music learning and academic skills in literacy and numeracy. Research also shows that music is unique in its flow-on benefits to students who learn it. Music at Asquith PS happens more than once a year! The students in K-2V, K-6C and 2-6W have had a fabulous time working with the wonderful Mrs Kylie Clift exploring rhythm, rhyme, patterns and singing. Even the teachers enjoy getting involved!

reassuring and calming presence and our school psychologist, Jess Cheok can be contacted if you feel your child needs some additional support. Beyond Blue has some further advice about 'Talking about scary stuff in the news'. School Attendance ‘If a student misses as little as 8 days in a school term, by the end of primary school they’ll have missed over a year of school’ (Reference: NSW Department of Education). Regular school attendance is essential to a child’s wellbeing and educational achievements. APS works in partnership with parents to encourage and support regular attendance. When your child attends school every day, learning becomes easier and your child will build and maintain friendships with other children. If your child is unwell, we do ask you to keep them at home to recuperate. If they are away for more than two days, please contact the school so we are aware of the situation. Following an absence from school, you must ensure that within 7 days you provide the school with a

verbal or written explanation for the absence. However, if the school has not received an explanation from

you within 2 days, the school may contact you to discuss the absence.

We recognise that working in partnership with parents and carers is the best way to support the regular attendance of your child, so if you have any concerns please do not hesitate to contact your child’s class teacher. Alternatively, you child’s teacher may contact you if they have any concerns about your child’s attendance. And the Winner is! After extensive research and consultation with the school community, the preferred options for the girl’s summer uniform have been chosen by fairly convincing numbers. The shorts: Navy blue press-stud shorts with a front fly, two side pockets and elastic backing on the waist. The shirt: Light blue Peter-Pan scallop collar with top pocket (not white as shown in the picture). The Uniform Committee is now liaising with the Uniform Shop to have supplies available for the beginning of 2020. Thank you for your support of this process and particular thanks to the Uniform Committee members: Lara H, Sasha L, Jen G, Briony O, Rene’ T and Anita C.

During this transition period, girls may choose to wear their sport uniform on days in addition to their

timetabled sport day.

Canteen News for 2020 Our canteen has been analysing their data and in consultation with the school, they are going to trial changing the operating days to Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in 2020. Minimal orders were being received on the Monday and we hope this change will be more helpful to our parent/carer community. Planning for 2020 At this time of the year, we are beginning to plan for 2020. If your child/ren will be leaving Asquith PS in 2020, or will be on holidays in the first days of Term 1, we need to know as soon as possible. Please fill in the attached form, or phone the school office. Accurate student numbers will help us plan the most appropriate structures and organisation.

Which notes have been sent home this fortnight? If you are missing any of these notes, or you need another copy, you will find them in the notes section on the school website. Hard copy notes are provided to families, and Skoolbag is used for updates and informal information. Please remember to subscribe to the Skoolbag app or check the school website for school communication. Skoolbag requires families to subscribe each group, eg. Choir, Dance, Stage 2 as appropriate for your child’s activities and learning needs.
