Term 1, 2018

Term 1 has certainly been an extremely busy and productive term for students and staff. The school community has been heavily involved in consultation and finalisation of our 2018-2020 Glenmore Park High School Plan. As you would appreciate, this is a comprehensive process of evaluation of programs, a broad range of data and analysis of implementation of our 2015-2017 School Plan. We always appreciate parent/carer and community input, often through surveys and focus groups, and thank those who were able to contribute to the process. Our 2018-2020 Glenmore Park High School Plan will be available for viewing on our school website by the end of term. On 15

th February we held our 2017 Higher School Certificate High Achievers

Assembly. There were 15 students invited back to celebrate their outstanding results in the Higher School Certificate. Proud parents and family members joined us in the celebrations. Again it was wonderful to note these great achievements of our students and to officially announce the Dux of 2017- Rory Geerin with an ATAR of 92.75. Early in March our Year 7 students also ventured off on their first school camp together. The students and staff reported having a fantastic time, with great activities. Principals Report Cont...

This term has seen a range of Wellbeing Programs run for the different year groups. These continue throughout the year and target specific aspects of student wellbeing and awareness raising for each year group. In Term 1, Year 7 attended the Aim Higher Program, Year 8 attended the Bully Busters Program and Year 10, the Drug and Alcohol Awareness Program. All programs were rated highly by the students and staff. Term 2 will see further implementation of our student wellbeing strategies and programs.

On April 10th, 2018 I was accompanied by our School Captains, Harkanwar Maan and

Chloe Shaw, to attend the ANZAC Student Service, run by the City of Penrith RSL Sub-Branch and held at Club Paceway. It is always a moving event and one that is well represented by local schools. Our Captains represented Glenmore Park High School in the Wreath Laying Ceremony. Lachlan Thuaux, School Vice Captain, was also at the Service undertaking the very important role as Parade Commander. Our school’s ANZAC assembly will be held when we return to school in Term 2.

Our students never cease to amaze us with their enormous successes in such a wide range of areas. Just to name a few we would like to congratulate Harkanwar Maan, School Captain, on winning the 1

st round of the Lions Youth of the Year, Cambridge

Park Lions Club- an amazing effort in public speaking and also interview technique. A special mention must also go to Chloe Shaw, School Captain, for being selected to represent local youth on a panel of only 3 people at the Queens of Hearts International Women’s Day Breakfast held 8

th March, 2018 at the Penrith RSL. Emma Hogan’s

recognition by Emma Husar as the Women of Lindsay award- Junior Women of the Year is also to be highly commended for her extensive work in fundraising and awareness raising for Diabetes research. We are so proud of our students and their willingness to take up the many opportunities offered to them.

It is with much sadness that I inform the school community of the loss of one of our teachers, Ms Nicole McKinnon. Ms McKinnon was appointed to our school at the beginning of 2018 as a permanent staff member in the HSIE faculty. She became extremely unwell, not long after starting with us and passed away shortly after. Our condolences for their loss go to her family.

After such a busy Term 1, I would like to wish our students and their families a wonderful break. Enjoy time with family, and stay safe.

Deputy Principals Report

Both Ms Caws and I can scarcely believe that we have reached the end of the term! Our school has had so much happen over the term! The sheer volume of opportunities offered in fields as diverse as sports, creative arts, public speaking and endless competitions is inspiring.

During the early stages of term 2, our attention will once again turn to subject selection. Our Year 8 students will get their first opportunities to choose the subjects that they study. Our Year 10 students will begin the very detailed process of choosing their senior courses. There are some very big decisions ahead!

The start of term 2 usually ushers in the first of the cool weather. Please ensure that your children have correct school uniform. Hoodies and other branded jackets are not school uniform. Please help support the school in this matter. The school rules regarding uniform exist as a safety measure. In the unlikely event of an emergency, students must be instantly identifiable.

Part of our school discipline system involves Loss of Privileges. Put simply, if students are not following school rules, they lose their ability to participate in school sporting events and attend school functions such as graduations and formals. It is a serious step that normally follows a warning and a number of conversations. With so many sporting and cultural events planned for term 2, a Loss of Privileges notification can have a significant impact on students whose behaviour has been unsatisfactory. Safe and respectful conduct at all times is your best insurance to prevent a “Loss of Privileges” notification.

One of the biggest challenges facing school administrators across the world is the influence of social media and mobile devices on children. Specifically, the use of social media to harass or ridicule other students. We would ask parents to help us manage this issue by closely monitoring their children’s use of mobile devices. Clear boundaries and rules can prevent serious issues. Some of the issues that have arisen from social media activities have been subject to Police action. Our students have been given information on what constitutes harassment and cyber bullying. There are very clear rules around those devices at school. Also, please remember that our school takes no responsibility for the loss or damage of mobile devices. They are brought at your own risk.

At the time of writing, we have just concluded a number of wonderful occasions at school including the Harmony Day Assembly, Junior Leadership Team Induction, Relay for Life, Autism Awareness Week, Shave for a Cure, “The Riff” concert, the International Women’s Day Breakfast and our School Cross Country Carnival. Such an amazing school!

Both Ms Caws and I would like to thank you for your ongoing support during Term 1 and hope that students have a lovely break!

Best wishes, Mr Harvie and Ms Caws - Deputy Principals

P & C Report

The Annual General Meeting of our school’s P&C Association took place on Monday 19 March 2018 resulting in the election of some new members. We would like to take this opportunity to extend our sincere appreciation to those outgoing members who held positions in 2017 and thank them for their assistance. We would particularly like to acknowledge our outgoing President Mark Geerin and commend him on the tremendous job he has done as President for the past 4 years and member of the P&C for over 7 years. We want to publicly thank him for his tireless efforts volunteering on the P &C. Whilst Mark has stepped down as an office bearer he remains a committed member of our P&C. We valued his time, support, encouragement and commitment that he regularly provided to school staff, students and families through his role as President and look forward to his continued presence within our P&C. The following school community volunteers have accepted positions on our P&C Association for 2018 as follows: President: Rebecca Marshall

Vice President: Dianne Darlington

Secretary: Donna Hines

Treasurer: Jeannette Cullen

Fundraising Committee: Richard Dunn and Sarah Dwyer

The P&C is proud to support Glenmore Park High School by providing funds to supplement and complement those provided by the school. We look for volunteers to assist with various fundraising activities and the past 2 years have seen funds raised for a shade shelter that helps to keep the school cool on those hot summer days. The P&C has also instigated the school purchasing lockers that students will be able to rent and help alleviate the heavy bags that we know all students are dealing with. A note regarding hire of these will be coming home soon. There have been many other varied initiatives that P&C have commented on or assisted with including providing feedback for the 2018-20 Glenmore Park High School Plan. The P&C does make a valuable contribution across a broad range of areas in the school. The committee meets the third Monday of the Month (except School and Public Holidays) in the school office and we love seeing new faces! We enjoy brainstorming ideas on how to further improve our school for everyone. New members are always welcome and we encourage you to attend when you can – a little bit of time really does go a long way. Be prepared to have a laugh and share ideas. The only thing you need to bring is your positive attitude and .... $2 to join the P&C (it's a legal thing, just go with it!)

On Friday March 23, teachers at Glenmore Park High School put themselves on the

line to raise much needed funds for Leukaemia Research. Students participated by

having their hair coloured, faces painted, or paying to throw chalk powder at a

teacher of their choice.

The Senior Leadership Team would like to thank the teachers who volunteered for

this event, and congratulate the school for the $220 raised for this excellent cause.

Colour for a Cure

P&C meetings are open and non confronting – you can come and listen, or contribute and ask questions. They can be a very valuable way to join the discussion and learn more about what’s going on in the school and community, as well as a good way of connecting with other parents through the school years. We look forward to providing updates as the year progresses with our first big event a sausage sizzle at the Local Government Elections on 12 May 2018. If you have time and want to just help out on a one off basis please leave your details with the front office or just come on down on the day and lend a hand. Thanks Rebecca Marshall P&C President

The Year 12 Drama students have been busy with the practical and theoretical aspects of the HSC Drama course. To assist with this, students attended Onstage, a showcase of the top performing students in the Drama course in 2017. Students laughed, cried and went on a journey during the various performances. Students will be performing in their own showcase early in Term 3 before their HSC examination and gleaned a new motivation from the excursion. A lovely day had by all. Liz Houwen Teacher - CAPA

Return and Earn

What is Return and Earn? From 1 December 2017 anyone who returns an eligible drink container to an approved NSW collection point will receive a 10-cent refund.

Return and Earn will help to reduce litter in the environment and help to achieve the goal of a 40 per cent reduction in litter volume by 2020.

The Support Unit at GPHS is encouraging the members of the school community to donate eligible containers that can then be redeemed for the 10-cent refund at an approved collection point.

From Thursday February 15th we will collect containers in special bins around the

school and we are accepting donations before and after school in the support unit. We are also planning one Saturday each term to accept large quantity donations (date to be advised).

We will update our proceeds as the year progresses.

Eligible containers Containers should be empty, uncrushed, unbroken and have the original label attached. If a container isn’t eligible for a refund, please use a recycling bin. Message from the Support Unit We have cashed in our fourth lot of bottles and cans today which brings our total to $927.00. A huge thank you to everyone who has donated. Please keep up the good work as our goal is to purchase a mini bus for our school. Lachie and the Support Unit

On Friday April 6th a group of Glenmore Park High School students met the Federal Member for Lindsay Emma Husar at the local shopping centre. Students shared with her their goals for their fundraising campaign, collecting refundable cans and bottles, to purchase a mini bus for the schools support unit. Emma has promised to visit the school and help advertise the campaign and encourage members of the community to help us reach this goal. Our next collection day is Friday May 4th from 3:00 to 5:00pm.

The Penrith Rugby League Club has kindly donated an autographed ‘Panthers Jersey’ which has now been framed. We are selling raffle tickets as part of this fundraising effort. Tickets are $5.00 each or 3 for $10.00. Each garbage bag of cans/bottles also earns one ticket in the raffle.

The 2018 Reading Challenges have begun! Students in Years 7, 8 and 9 can participate in either Challenge by reading a total of twenty books. The difference between the two programs is the choice of books and the final certificate. For the Premier’s, fifteen books must be selected from the PRC reading list and five can be the student’s own choice, and a certificate signed by the Premier is awarded upon completion. However, with the Principal’s Challenge, all books can be the student’s own choice, and a Gold Award is presented at the end of the year. More information for the PRC can be found at https://online.det.nsw.edu.au/prc/logon.html?ssosource=login or from the Library. Jennifer Dengate Teacher - Librarian

2018 International Women’s Day Breakfast

On Wednesday, 14 March, our Young Women's Group organised a wonderful breakfast to celebrate the achievements of women over the last century, and to raise awareness of the plight of young women in less advantaged countries than Australia. This year we varied our usual program of beginning with a single keynote address and instead heard from a number of women from our school community. School Captain, Chloe Shaw, spoke passionately about her campaign for the charity One Girl, which funds girls’ education projects in Africa, while Year 11 students, Emma Hogan and Shelby-Lea Grech, reported back from the Women's Leadership Seminar they attended at NSW Parliament House in Week 6. Ms Emaneni, one of our TAS teachers, generously shared her experiences of growing up female in India, and the opportunities she has had since moving to Australia. Entertainment was provided by our very talented Megan Chetcuti of Year 12, who gave a beautiful performance of Adele's Someone Like You. Special guests included: the Deputy Mayor, Tricia Hitchen; Anne Maclean from Western Sydney University; HSLO Marlene Cross; Lauren Vosota from NASCA; and 2017 school leaders, Emilia Rance and Natasha Zahra. We appreciate them giving up their time to help make the breakfast a memorable one. A big thank you must go to Mr Dudley, Ms Geerin, Ms Emaneni, Mrs Whittaker and our Hospitality Team for the great food and coffee. Jennifer Dengate Teacher - Librarian

The Royal Easter Show

Year 12 Hospitality and Year 10 Food Technology students enjoyed a great day at the Easter Show. Starting in the animal exhibition centres the students viewed chickens, hatchlings, pigs and goats before moving on to the UNE (University of New England’s) ‘Future Farming’. From here students watched a ‘working Dairy Farm’ learning how farmer’s milk cows and the different varieties of products made from milk. Students loved the ‘Baby Animal Nursery’ where they interacted with baby goats and sheep before moving onto the Food Hall and District Exhibitions. After this the students had free time to eat, have fun on the rides and buy their show bags. Mr Dudley, Mrs Geerin, Mr Schubert and Mr Rhodes would like to thank the students for a great day.

Industrial Technology Timber HSC Major Projects The HSC major works in any discipline is a formidable challenge. Industrial Technology Timber is no exception. As we come to the end of Term 1 and begin transitioning into Term 2, all HSC students are actually entering Term 3! This is because they started their first term at the end of last year.

The Major Work is an opportunity for students to display their woodwork knowledge and put their skills to the test by building the project of their choice. By now their jobs should be well underway and the ticking clock is getting gradually louder.

It is tradition at Glenmore Park High School for teachers and students to come in during the holidays to put some extra time and elbow grease into the projects. I am happy to report that this year’s crop of students have been hard at work during the last 9 weeks and are well positioned to present their work to the external markers for assessment if they keep up the good work.

I hope to see all students of Industrial Technology Timber hard at work sometime in the first week of the school holidays.
