College Principal report continued ... Bullying behaviour can be:

verbal eg name calling, teasing, abuse, putdowns, sarcasm, insults, threats

physical eg hitting, punching, kicking, scratching, tripping, spitting

social eg ignoring, excluding, ostracising, alienating, making inappropriate gestures

psychological eg spreading rumours, dirty looks, hiding or damaging possessions, malicious SMS and email messages, inappropriate use of camera phones.

Conflict or fights between equals and single incidents are not defined as bullying. Bullying behaviour is not:

children not getting along well a situation of mutual conflict

single episodes of nastiness or random acts of aggression or intimidation. Every student has the right to feel secure, happy about themselves and to be comfortable at school. No one has the right to deny any student this right, and it is important that all students have a real awareness of the existence of harassment and what it constitutes, whether as a victim or as a perpetrator. Discussing this potentially destructive issue both at school and at home will benefit students, and the school community will be a safe haven for all. If you would like to visit some websites you can visit them at: http://bullyingnoway.gov.au/ http://www.cybersmart.gov.au/Schools/Teacher%20resources/Lower%20secondary/Lets%20fight%20it%20together.aspx Should you have any queries or concerns regarding your sons or daughters please do not hesitate to contact the school.

ATTENDANCE When students have higher than acceptable absences it makes it very difficult for them to build a sound understanding of the subject material. As a consequence, they have gaps in their learning that really restrict their progress. The end result is that they struggle to come to grips with the concepts and become stressed. To put it in perspective, 80% attendance represents a day off per week for the entire school year, 40 days in total. Five years schooling at 80% attendance means a student would have missed a whole school year during this time; the impact on his/her education would be severe. Please encourage your child to attend school every day unless they are ill. With Flying Start commencing in the secondary part of our school next week it is an important time to do something about the attendance, if it is an issue, as this is an important start to the 2018 school year.

Year 3/4 News continued ...

The Strawberry Pick and Fonterra Excursion On Friday this week, we are looking forward to our excursion to these places to learn more about how our food gets from farm to plate and the technology used to get it there. Thank you to the parents who are giving up their time to make this experience the best possible.

Swimming Next week, week 8, the 3/4s and 5/6s have the opportunity to improve their swimming skills. Students will be grouped according to ability and their instructors will work hard to ensure that progress can be made. Please ensure that your child has their swimming gear on the days they have sessions. Everyone should have a short-sleeved rash vest or t-shirt as well, to avoid sunburn.

Inquiry Project Students in 3/4 are starting a Food Inquiry Task that involves finding out where in Australia this food is grown, the climate that best suits it, understanding the growth process, knowing what is involved in caring for and producing it, what technology helps with the production and how this food gets from farm to fork. Once the information is gathered, students will choose how they present their information, remembering VCOP, creativity, neatness, being detailed, effective use of time and being organised.

Year 5/6 News The Grade 5/6’s were very lucky to attend the T20 Big Blast Cricket on Friday. Approximately 50 girls and boys competed in a round robin of limited over games at Jack Eddy Oval in Moama. Our A grade boys team completed in the final for 3

rd and 4

th place. Thanks to Mr Holloway for

organising the day and to Liam Nedeljkovich, Mr Ross and Mr Wegmann for supporting the students. Thank you to Mrs Hall who provide moral support for the girls. Next Monday, 5/6 students start a 4-day swimming program. It is an essential skill for all students to learn about water safety and survival techniques. Please make sure that you have completed the permission form and returned it to school ASAP. If you are able to help by walking students to the pool on any of the days, please contact your classroom teacher. Market Place is up and running again this year, and the students have been developing their business through marketing, buying and selling of produce to make profit. They are beginning to understand that money does not grow on trees and you cannot always buy what you want straight away. Some are still trying to balance their books to ensure they have money to buy new stock. Our first whole school transition session was on Wednesday, just for an hour. It is a short introductory session so that students and staff can start to build relationships. These classes are just a draft for 2018 and most likely, there will be changes. 5/6 B had the expertise of Trevor Mellington, AFL Development Manager during their PE lesson this week. He ran a session on AFL 9s which the students had been working on for the previous two weeks. All students got involved and enjoyed playing.

Scholastic Book Club Cheryl and Anna

The final Book Club catalogue for the year will be distributed this week. Orders need to be returned to the office by Friday, 1st December, NO LATE ORDERS PLEASE.. This ensures prompt delivery. If ordering for a Christmas or Birthday present please note this on top of your order and it will be left at the office for collection. Many thanks for your support during the year, Scholastic supports your child with great books and supports our school with great rewards.

Why and How to Learn Music at our School. Sue Meeking

Playing a musical instrument can be fun but it can also open doors to employment and social life. And as a bonus research tells us that students learn many skills to enhance their other school subjects, while taking music lessons and practising the instrument. Here’s a list of the advantages of sticking to learning an instrument: improves memory; teaches patience and the value of persistence; the sense of achievement; builds confidence; fosters creativity; playing relieves stress; and develops self-discipline. If primary parents are interested in offering lessons to their children a notice regarding the opportunities our school has available will come home during December. Some lessons are free to allow students to try out. Others incur a very reasonable fee. The detailed note will be given to all grade 1 -5 students in preparation for 2018.

Bush Market 2017 Sue Meeking

A great experience for Kyabram music students! On Friday our school supported the Chamber of Commerce in their Bush Market venture. The sun shone and the atmosphere was cheery. Our students entertained with varied instruments including recorder, violin, drums, voice and guitar. The Primary Singers performed to a large crowd and it was exciting to see some secondary soloists impress the shoppers who have sent positive feedback to the school. The community were very supportive of our beginner performers who demonstrated their progress to the passing audience. The Pulse Radio students also kept the east end shoppers entertained which was a great use of the students’ talents, recently developed in the Pulse Radio class. Many thanks to Andrew Moore, Kim Morrison and Bodhi Hawken for their co-ordination and technical work.

7-12 Principal Report continued….

LEARNING CURVE NEWSLETTER ARTICLE Each week I will be including a parent newsletter article from the Learning Curve which is in line with the Secondary student planner. I hope you find these articles valuable.

EMOTIONAL WELLBEING/BOOSTING WELLBEING The World Health Organisation predicts depression will be the world’s number health issue by 2030. One in four young people will experience emotional health issues. The adolescent mind is often a turbulent place, balancing the demands of family and friends, coping with pressures of school, dealing with puberty and living up to the expectations they have of themselves. Supporting teenagers to maintain a healthy emotional functioning level and not let their worries escalate into more serious emotional wellbeing issues is an ongoing challenge for all parents and teachers. Unfortunately in today’s society, we spend much of our time pulling teenagers out of the river after they have fallen in. A far more proactive approach is for us to walk upstream and stop them falling in the river in the first place. The time to fix the roof is when the sun is shining, not when it begins to rain. It is very difficult to initiate positive dialogue with students who are already suffering from emotional health issues. The goal is to empower students to build their sense of emotional wellbeing through using their signature strengths and growth mindsets. Every day they can add to their wellbeing banks by looking for what is right and having positive experiences. There are many organisations set up to support people who suffer from these issues. They do a wonderful job assisting people to regain their normal functioning levels. This week students will be investigating some of them to provide insights on emotional illness and the associated warning signs. Open and trusting communication lines between students, parents and teachers enable opportunities for proactive programs to be put in place to future proof their emotional wellbeing.

NAIDOC Week Award To celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people a special week called NAIDOC week is put aside in Australia each year. It was in July this year and a special colouring competition was offered to all young children. Every student from our Prep, Year 1 and Year 2 had the opportunity to complete a colour-in during school time which Mrs. Meeking sent to the judges in Sydney. We now have the exciting news that one of our year two students was a winner in that competition. Congratulations to Maddy for winning the NAIDOC Medal of Excellence, 1 of only 20 medals awarded across Victoria. Well done Maddy!

Nestlé Agricultural and Horticultural Centre at Kyabram P-12 College

Agricultural and Horticultural studies are alive and growing at Kyabram P-12 College. Staff and students have been working tirelessly on contributing to their very own specialised learning environment. Staff and students are very fortunate to have access to the wonderful Nestlé Sustainability Agriculture and Horticulture Centre that helps to provide meaningful hands on and theory based learning opportunities. Students have options from year 9 to select a science based elective, “Seeds to Market”, in year 10. Agriculture and Natural Resources and in VCE Agricultural and Horticultural Studies. In year 9 students are able to run their own agricultural or horticultural small businesses that operate for one term. These small businesses provide students with both planning and conducting skills, promote excellent communication skills and allow students to interact with members of the local community. Students businesses include: growing vegetables; raising chickens; using an aquaponics setup to grow both fish; and a variety of vegetables. The program is very rewarding and allows students to demonstrate key outcomes in record planning, record keeping of purchased goods and sales of products, creating a photo journal and advertising techniques. At year 10 students undertake a number of scientific investigations that allow them the opportunity to explore the effects of a range of variables on the growth and germination of pea plants. Students are able to work individually on this task, as there is plenty of space and, because of many successful harvests of student grown pea crops in the numerous garden beds, pea seeds are readily available. Students are also able to participate in the Cows Create Careers Program. This is a fantastic program and demonstrates to all students the numerous avenues for future employment within agricultural and horticultural industries. Students take ownership of the care and wellbeing of a number of calves over the period of a month. Aspects such as creating a well-formulated ration, animal and personal hygiene programs and consistent monitoring of animal weight gain are observed. All students are able to participate in the program with a weekly roster established so all students can share the workload. Kyabram P-12 College offers a VCE Agricultural and Horticultural program that allows students to complete large portions of theory and then be able to put their newly acquired knowledge into practice on a small scale within the vegetable gardens, trial plots or even to help formulate rations for animals. VCE students also have the opportunity to take part in a number of field trips to local farms. During these visits, students are able to interact with the landowners or managers and seek information regarding some of their studies. This year our VCE class was able to visit a local dairy farm to identify how to formulate a ration, visit a goat farm to discuss sustainability and animal health traits as compared to a dairy farm, as well as visiting an aquaponics facility to gain a greater understanding of how to best establish our own system. On Monday the 13

th of November, Kyabram P-12 College opened the doors to the Nestlé Agricultural and

Sustainability Centre to showcase to the local community all of the hard work students have been completing over the past 12 months. Representatives from Nestlé, local councillors, College principals, parents, students and a number of staff made the event a celebration to see how the centre has grown. Students from years 9-12 were able to take visitors on guided tours that really demonstrated to our guests the keen interest and connectedness students have with their own education within agriculture and horticulture. All visitors were overwhelmed with the development of the centre and very pleased with the commitment to education that both staff and students have shown. Students were able to explain to our guests that they were involved with all stages of the building of the Nestlé Agriculture and Sustainability Centre. During building stages, students were able to help determine positioning of garden beds, location of rainwater tanks, animal enclosures and have recently started to plan for our future aspirations both within the classroom and in the centre grounds. Some of these future aspirations include more infrastructure such as a Sproutwell hothouse, grass trial plots, a number of computers and a printer for the classroom and an overhead projector to help students complete their coursework within the one facility. It was evident that visitors were pleased to see that staff and students have been able to, and will continue to, recycle a number of items from around the school.

Nestle Agricultural and Horticultural Centre continued…. At Kyabram P-12 College it is visible that the positive working relationships across domains is healthy. Science and Technology subjects have had some outstanding work completed by very skilful teachers, Mr Lionel Curling and Mr Peter Aitken who regularly assist with the developments within the Nestlé Agriculture and Sustainability Centre. Both teachers regularly contribute with welding or building tasks such as animal enclosures, aquaponics setups and even contributing to the design elements of garden beds and herb gardens. Matt McCready, the Agricultural Science teacher at Kyabram P-12 College said, “Students are able to demonstrate key outcomes through a variety of approaches thanks to the Nestlé Sustainability and Agriculture Centre and enthusiastic educators to guide the learning process”. A big focus of the Nestlé Agriculture and Sustainability Centre is to continue to build on strengthening positive relationships and promote an environment that is educationally first rate and everlasting.
