Dear Woodward Families and Friends, Welcome back to a new year of learning!!! I would like to say thank you for your support in having your child/ren at school in their uniforms. We truly appreciate you!!! Research shows and supports that students wearing a school uniform have the following benefits: a decrease in discipline concerns, an increase in attendance percentages, and an overall academic increase in performance. Students are less likely to make fun of students clothing when they are asked to wear the same thing.
We will have our Parent /Teacher Conferences this month. These will be held on Tuesday, October 18th and Thursday, October 20, 2016. It is very important that you set up a time to meet with your child’s teacher to discuss his/her academic progress. This is a time where we can set goals, discuss strategies, and put plans in place to continue the learning process for each and every student. We need YOU to make this happen!!! Please touch base with your child’s teacher to set up your conference time. We look forward to seeing you!!!
My door is always open to address any concerns or answer questions. Please feel free to contact me with your concerns. We appreciate all that you do to help our school be successful and a great place of learning for all. Let’s continue on this journey, working and learning together.
Your Principal,
Dr. Carla F. Cunigan

Nurse Notes submitted by Ms. Nance, School Nurse
Hello Parents, and welcome to a wonderful school year here at Woodward
Elementary! I am honored to be your nurse this year. I wanted to take this time to
introduce myself. I have been a nurse for five years. I received my Bachelor of
Science in Nursing from Chamberlain College in 2011. I’ve worked in several areas of
nursing, including the intensive care unit and telemetry units in the hospital, as well as
working in the community as a home visiting nurse and here in St. Louis Public
Schools. Many of you may remember me, as I was the nurse here at Woodward for
half of the 2013-2014 school year and the entire 2014-2015 school year.
I have three children of my own and therefore, it is my top priority to provide
exceptional health care for your children while they are here at school. In order to
ensure this can happen, I will need to partner with you as the parent to make sure that
I have all the pertinent information that I will need to care for your child.
If your child has any medical conditions, please provide this information to me
with a note from your child’s pediatrician explaining the disease process and
care that may be needed for your child.
If your child has asthma, allergies, or seizures, please provide me with a copy of
their asthma action plan, allergy plan, or seizure plan signed by their pediatrician
that is less than one calendar year old. This is extremely important in that it
ensures that I will be able to provide safe, accurate, and responsive care in the
event that your child needs it.
If your child has any medications that need to be taken at school, please provide
me with that medication as well as a signed Authorization to Administer letter.
This letter needs to be signed by yourself and the child’s pediatrician.
If you would like me to be able to share information with your doctor and allow
your child’s doctor to share information with me, it is imperative for you to sign
an authorization to release information for this school year.
Nurse Notes (cont.) Lastly, here are some of the opportunities that we will be having here at Woodward
this year:
We will be partnering with Kids Vision for Life to screen students for vision and
provide a free pair of glasses if needed.
Also, we will have Gateway for Oral Health that will provide dental services.
Finally, Affinia will come to the school and provide hearing screenings.
Be looking in future newsletters about when this will take place and when to
expect to receive consent forms.
Below, you will find my contact information. Please feel free to contact me anytime
with questions and concerns. Let’s have an awesome year! Go Wildcats!

ATTENDANCE
Attendance is a serious matter
We need our students here at school and on time, each and
every day.
Parents, please assist us by making sure that your child/ren are
here at school everyday.
The store will be open every Friday for all students that
have at least 5 Violet days in a row.
The store is open during their lunch/recess times.
Our school store, (see below) is a behavior incentive we have
here at Woodward. If students have five (5) purple days they
are able to shop.
The store is open on Fridays during lunch. Students are
excited about the items that they are receiving from the store.
Donations and parent volunteers are needed in order to sustain
the store as a valid incentive for our students. Please keep the
store in mind as you clean and shop.
Donations can be made to any SW-PBS member or taken
directly to the store on Friday.
Thank You for all you do.

History of Red Ribbon Week
Red Ribbon week was inspired by the life and work of Drug Enforcement Agency Special Agent
Enrique “Kiki” Camerena. After graduating from college and serving in the Marines and as a police
officer, he joined the DEA so he could help fight illegal drugs. While working undercover in Mexico, he
was killed by drug traffickers. The people in his hometown in California began wearing red ribbons to
commemorate his life. The trend took hold throughout the country and in 1988, Congress officially
proclaimed “Red Ribbon Week”.
