a history of VegemiteDid you know that Vegemite has been an Australian favourite for more than 90 years? This uniquely Australian spread was invented by Dr Cyril P Callister who gave it the very sensible name of ‘Pure Vegetable Extract’. At first Australians didn’t like Vegemite. But its producers continued to promote the nutritional benefits. Vegemite’s popularity grew after it was recommended as an excellent source of Vitamin B by the British Journal of Medicine. During World War II the Army supplied Vegemite as a nutritional boost to the troops. This led to a shortage, so to ensure there was enough for everyone it was rationed nationwide. This only increased its popularity and it became an essential item on Australian breakfast tables following the war. You may have heard the term “Happy Little Vegemite” and wondered where it came from. In 1954 a bright and catchy radio jingle was played across the airwaves claiming that Vegemite, “Puts a rose in every cheek”. This same campaign was used again in the 1980s cementing it in the minds of the next generation of Australians. After all these years the recipe for Vegemite has changed very little, ensuring its nutritional value, and popularity continues. It’s common for Aussies to discuss the very serious matter of spreading Vegemite. You’ve probably got a favourite way to spread your Vegemite - do you like just a scraping or a thick layer?
