1st Profile subjects

Values of the school are aimed at preparing learners to manage themselves in a complex and ever-changing world. This is one of the reasons why every profile subject must be shaped in unity between learners and teachers - based on the theme for the trimester in question. It is our experience that the complexity and dynamicy of life is better experienced in a strong community and by being open towards others and the outside world.

We are a school of the times, and activities stimulating a sense of community have to be meaningful to learners and teachers alike. The profile subjects bring together different learners and teachers in a unique development process. It is our experience that the guiding relationship established between learners and teachers during travels is the ultimate learning environment.

We focus on individual development with respect for the community. Learners and teachers are very diverse and there will be many different priorities and targets during the year under the heading ‘development and education in the committing community’. It is for this reason that we focus on creating a framework that will support these many different interests - and in extension the many new and exciting profile subjects and travels. This strategy also means that self-payment on profile subject travels may vary accordingly.

In this magazine we have described ideas and profile subject travels. The descriptions are based on below mentioned mission. You will find more details on how to choose a subject, the economy and safety on page 36-37.

1st Profile subjects ProfILe SubjectS at ranum efterSkoLe coLLege - In Short:

1st trimester’s profile subjects are chosen prior to school start. Subject groups meet the 7th of June for an introduction. During the first period you will practice a set of skills which are to be used during your profile travel in week 41. The first period will also prepare you for the selection process before 2nd and 3rd trimesters - Teachers have planned a course that will introduce you to the concept of having a profile, how it is developed and how you are influential.

2nd trimester’s profile subjects are chosen in the end of September. Learners and teachers have the opportunity of shaping new profile subjects. The theme for this period is world citizenship and globalisation, and it is through this focus that we will meet other cultures around the world. These profile subjects are called culture subjects and we will prepare an expedition in extension of these subjects, which are to be carried through in Jan/Feb.

3rd trimester’s profile subjects are chosen in December.Learners and teachers can once again shape new subjects, and learners are at this stage very active and participatory. The goal is to use experiences from the 1st and 2nd trimesters’ profile subjects and combine interests, activities and cultural meetings. The theme is personal formation, and this process is often activated when our learners meet other cultures on their own terms and use the experiences gained from the first two profile subjects. Travels in 3rd trimester are in beginning of April, before confirmations and written exams.

ridinghorses, nature-sport and Imagination make an amazing combination. On horseback you will experience nature up close. Riding is as much a sport for your body as it is for your soul. Your coach will be Karina Dahl, among others.

Stald rønbjerg (Stable Rønbjerg) is located in beautiful surroundings near Rønbjerg - an area only a few

km. from the school. Lessons in dressage and jumps are managed by experienced teachers. Furthermore, Ranum Efterskole College is able to offer you several courses such as horsemanship, dressage and jump weekends, forging and much more. Prices for the stabling of own horse and half-share horses also covers care and fodder for the entire stay.

The profile subject travel in Riding will be planned after ‘New Learners Day’, when we have an idea of

your interest, levels and skills. Last year our travel took us to Austria, where we visited various stables and

rode in the scenic nature as well as indoor.

the dance expedition is targeted at berlinLearners and teachers from Ranum Efterskole

College have during the past 5 years or so, managed to establish close relations to the dance studio, Tanzschule Dieter Keller, located in the charming East Berlin.

Hip hop is the theme here, and together with the studio’s brilliant choreographer, learners will

discover the many aspects of hip hop. We will also perform a Flash Mob in Berlin. Classes at the school

will in weeks up to our travel, focus on the flash mob, expressions and how to collaborate.

The fantastic atmosphere of Berlin, which is characterised by history, culture and street art, creates an amazing scenery to the dance crew’s flash mob. Learners will also experience the unique history and culture of Berlin when we experience one of the great dance performances at Friedrichstadt Palast.

adventure Ranum Efterskole College is most definitely a adventure school! Adventure is aimed at those, who likes being active and to challenge themselves with friends in nature! Part of lessons focus on personal development, both mentally and physically. And adventure is extremely

developing! You will experience a strong friendship, where the group will go much further together, than the individual

ever will be capable of. We work with the concept of FLYT (MOVE) as we use our body to move around

in the terrain. Activities will include jogging, orienteering, mountainbiking, kayaking, canoeing, hiking, climbing, free diving and obstacle courses.

Adventure is based at the Nature Sports Centre, and we have kayaks, canoes, mountainbikes,

climbing wall and gear available at our disposal.

The adventure expedition in 1st trimester will go to an area in the North with forest, lakes and mountains. We

have previously been in Wales, Ireland, Iceland, Norway, Czech Rep., Greenland, Austria and the Canaries.

drama Drama means ‘to act’ and we will act during this course, which will be

75% practice and 25 % theory (which we will then put into practice).

Your ideas about both theatre and yourself will be challenged , when we try out Me-thod Acting

(American acting method), performance and privacy-theatre (the later European acting method), as well as the Russian method (the Danish acting method). The profile subject travel will go to London or perhaps Berlin, and will feature at least one visit to a theatre school and participation in

a workshop, as well as visits to thetres and other cultural events. You will read various texts and see

videos in both English and Danish during this course. It takes courage to stand up on a stage - and courage to

see yourself.

Street performance

This profile subject is about using ‘Street culture’ as a tool or channel to experience other cultures and meet other young people with similar interests. We may build a long board together, meet with another group of young people in another part of the world - perhaps Berlin and share our interests in the sport and the activities from the communities in the street culture.

Many learners are familiar with street culture in general, but in our classes they are introduced to many different aspects of street culture that will challenge them on a personal level and give them new targets for their training. We will introduce them to Breakdance, Longboarding, Tricking, Parkour and different variations of art and graffiti - just to name a few!

In our street performance workshop learners will be able to realize their own ideas under the guidance of skilled

teachers, and a part of the classes will focus on projects managed by the learners in order to

strenghten responsibility, team-work and communication. During the course of this subject, we may also visit different skate- and street destinations in Denmark. Our travel may take us to Berlin - a city with a unique street environment and culture. We will

use social media to arrange a meeting with other young people, in order to experience their street

culture and life.

In collaboration with the school’s own chefs and guest teachers, we will work with exciting ingredients and make dishes

that challenge your tastebuds. We will not use recipes, but instead taste our way into the culinary

universe. The first profile subject travel will go to Copenhagen - a city which is absolutely leading in the gastronomic worldmap. We will look closer at the new nordic kitchen, and visit restaurants that focus on this in their kitchens. Copenhagen is also the meeting with other cultures, and we have previously tried evrything from sushi to French duck-sandwich!

We will also cook ourselves, which we will shop for in the new food halls near Nørreport statiion.

This profile subject travel will also provide you with a glance into the large hotels, their kitchens and rooms.

Gastronomy is also a close and commiting friendship, where we will work hard together in order to achieve the very best in cooking and food design! This may mean long days and that no one is finished until the whole team is.

Waterperformance Why choose waterperformance? Choose this profile subject, if you are crazy about water and want to challenge yourself in different sports activities in- and on the water!Everyone can join - if you are a beginner or an experienced surfer. You will have plenty of opportunities to challenge yourself, whilst having fun with your friends.

What is the content? In this profile subject we will try: WAKEBOARDING, WINDSURFING,

PADDLE SURFING and SUP SURFING. Our primary activity will be

wakeboarding, because of the perfect conditions of our

new 2.0 system in the lake near Rønbjerg Dayz Resort.

We will though let wind and weather determine from time to time, what activities we will do - with 4 different sport activities to choose from we will most likely always find a match between activity and weather conditions. It is, though, important that you are willing to jump into the water in all kinds of weather.

There are many aspects of waterperformance - also aspects that does not include being in the

water. We will challenge and train strength and balance on land. Balance training is primarily on indo-

boards, springboards, trampolines and the like. Strength training is primarily core training. We will also learn about our

destination for our expedition - prepare ourselves for the culture we will meet and experience, so that we may do so with an open mind.

Besides our profile subject lessons, we will also try to arrange weekend excursions, so we have more time on the water and we will be fully prepared for our expedition at the end of the term.

termS: It is important that you like being in water, that you can swim and that you have the courage to move your personal boundaries. We will adjust our programmes according to the group, wind and weather.

SeLf- Payment: 3.000,- dkk. (Turkey)

What about the expedition? The goal of our expedition is to experience a different culture, feel the diversity and learn about the nature and surroundings of our destination. It is exiting to travel and very educational to test oneself under new conditions. You will find that weather conditions for water sports activities are often better abroad, and we will strengthen our bonds as a group on this trip. The expedition itself is also a goal for the group as a whole to prepare itself for. We will live, eat and act as the locals and we will get to know them as they will get to know us.

Who will teach us?At Ranum Efterskole College we have most competent educators and instructors in all subjects. In waterperformance you will be taught by one of Denmark’s best female wakeboarders and prof. guest instructors. They are all expereinced in their sports - in Denmark and aborad - so you will have the best foundation for learning and development!

Speargun fishingThis course is based on underwater hunting (uw hunting) and is an activity where you will hunt under the water surface. UW hunting is a sport that combines many elements: Shooting skills (harpoon), knowledge of nature and fish, and the ability to move silently in water. It is about being able to stay calm, and make the right decisions. There will be evenings, where we will go to the water to hunt, make bonfires and talk about the stories and experiences we will share.

We have a big selection of fish to hunt in Denmark, and every year a fish up to 10kg is caught. To plan one’s

hunt can be exciting, and the joy of hitting one’s target is unsurpassed. To tell the story about the hunt afterwards around the bonfire is an amazing feeling, and there are never two hunts that are alike. Moreover, fish shot by oneself naturally taste far better - especially over a bonfire!

Uw-hunting can be at all hours during the whole year. We will try to hunt at different times, in order to gain as

many different experiences as possible.

underwater hunting is with out the use of air tanks, and everyone can learn it!UW-hunting should definitely be experienced, it is incredibly intense. The silence under the water surface and the adrenalin rushing through your body when spotting a prey. There are no age limits to the use of a harpoon in Norway, which will be our destination for our expedition in the Spring. If your not 16 years old, you will be trained in the use of a harpoon, but you will be unable to use it for hunting in Denmark. See Facebook ”Dyk & Pløk Ranum Efterskole” for pictures and videos.

how to choose:Important: Safety and diving Diving is an exiting, challenging and developing subject, but because it is also connected to certain risks, there are some safety measures and administrative pre-cautions we need in place before any learner can participate in the profile subject Diving. This is important! Administrative papers are to be found on: www.ranumefterskole.dk/62-profilfag/581-inden-kursus-start-dykning• Helbredserklæring (health certificate).• Bilag til helbredserklæring (appendix to the health certificate).• Padi’ s regler for sikker dykning (rules and regulations for safe diving by PADI).• Risiko - og ansvarserklæring (statement of risk- and responsibility).

These administrative papers should all be filled in and signed by parents, the learner in question and perhaps your doctor (See appendix to health certificate). It is very important that the learner is able to answer ‘no’ to each question or statement on the health certificate, as a simple ‘yes’ to just one will result in additional examinations at a diver’s doctor. As a rule, you can not dive if you have asthma.

All papers must be in place prior to the first lessons in diving - otherwise the learner will be prohibited from participating.
