burningoftherainforestsinBrazil,andyetmostoftheoxygensproducedbyplankton.Ouruseofnickel-cadmiumbatteries,andleadbatteries,andputtingthemoutintotheenvironmenthaskilledagoodpartoftheplankton.Cetaceansarebeachingthemselves,sothattheresenoughfoodleftfortheothers.

KERRYCASSIDY(KC):SoPete,wearevery,veryhappytobeabletoconnectwithyou,andyouhavebeenverygenerouswithyourtime,withyourenergy.IhopeIhavealittlemoreenergyleft,becauseImcomingafterBill,andafterDavid,andIjusthaveafewwrap-upquestionsthatIwanttorunbyyou,andwellseehowthisgoes.

So,oneoftheleadingthingsyousaidwasthatyouwereinvolvedwithrobots.

PP:Thatscorrect.

KC:Imjustwonderingifwecouldkindofdrilldowntherealittlebitandtalkaboutwhatyourbackgroundwas,andhowinvolvedyou

reallywerewithrobots.

PP:Well,havingbeeninvolvedwithtryingtobuildflyingsaucers,youusuallyfoundthatwithflyingsaucers,ifyoulookatmostofthemovies,therealwaysseemstobearobotinvolvedwithit,soIwasveryinterestedinrobots.

Intheearlydays,whenIbuiltasatellitetrackingstationbeforethereweresatellites,thentrackedtheRussianSputnikwhenitwaslaunchedandcalledthegovernmentandtoldthemthelaunchtrajectoryandtheorbitalandthefrequencyitwastransmittingonduringthe

McCarthyeratheythoughtmaybeIwasaCommunistpinko.SotheycameandfoundoutthatIactuallyhadasatellitetrackingstationbeforethereweresatellites.Iwasabout17yearsoldatthetime,sothatgotalotofnotorietyhereinIdaho.

AtthatpointintimeinIdahoontheeasternsideofthestate,therewasaplacethatwascalledtheAtomicEnergyCommission,anuclearreactortestsite.Itswherethefirstnuclearpowergenerationwasdone.Anyway,theyanticipatedhavingsomenuclearproblemsthereanddecidedtheyneedsomerobotic-typethingthatcouldwaltzintoanuclearmeltdownandpullthereactorapart,sothattheywouldnt

haveaChinaSyndrometakingplace.

So,eventuallyI,andafewofmyfriends,gotthecontracttodorobotsthatcoulddothat.I,naturally,hadgreatfaithinmyselfandsaid:Ohsure.[laughs]

Ifoundoutalotofthings;thatwasatremendouseducation.Ifoundoutthatmaterialsthatwereelectricalconductors,insideofaheavynuclearfluxbecameinsulators,andinsulatorsbecameconductors,and

PP:verystiffmetalsbecameliketoastandverybrittleandbrokeapart,orlikeashes.Materialslikeashesbecameveryhard,andgreasebecamelikewelds...

So,eventuallywebuiltacoupleofdifferenttypesof...Iwontcallthemrobots,becausetheyweretrulymanipulators.Theyweredevicesthatatoneendlookedexactlylikewethinkofarobotlooking.Ithadapairofarmsthatwouldmoveandgrip.Actually,wedesignedthemsoifyoucouldgripabeakerofliquid,youcouldmoveitveryrapidlyanditwouldtiltitaccordinglyandnotspillit.Youcouldreacharoundbehindyouorinfrontofyou,orouttotheside.

Thenonthebottomofit,wehadsomethathadthreerollingwheels,andsomehadlittletanktreads.So,thiswasinthe1955-6-7-8regionoftime.

KC:AtthatpointdidtheyhaveAI?

PP:No,thetermhadntevenbeeninventedyet.Soanyway,onthe

otherendofthisdevicethatlookedatoneendlikearobot,wasathingthatapersongotinto.Theyhadacoupleofsmallone-inchtelevisiontubeswithlenseson,andthey'dputthoseonandtheycouldseestereoscopically.Thentheyhadacoupleoflittlehandsthattheycouldmovetheirarmsandhandslikeit,andtherobotwouldmoveaccordinglythemanipulatorwouldmoveaccordingly.

KC:Andtherecouldbeadistance,right?Theycouldbebackat

PP:Therecouldbeanydistanceupto20or30miles,butitrequiredwiresatthetime.Laterwemadesomethatworkedonradiowaves.

Butforworkingwithatomicmaterials,radiowavescouldbeinterferedwith,anumberofthings.Theycouldntwithstandthattypeoflackofphysicalsecurity,soallofthemthatwedidforthemhadwires.

KC:Soletsfast-forwardtoalotmorerecently,oratleast,maybenotevenrecently.IdontknowwhenitisyougotreallyinvolvedinAIandyoustartedto...

PP:Well,firstIgotinvolvedincomputers.In1975,76webuiltacomputerthatwasusedinTokyoattheairporttoannouncetheplaneflightsinanumberofdifferentlanguages.ItwasthefirstuseIknowofamicroprocessorchipinarealproduct.

Thenlaterwebuiltacomputertrainingdevicetoteachpeoplehowtousemicroprocessorsandhowtousesoftwaretoaccomplishvarioustasks.WebuiltthatatalittlecomputercompanywhosenamewasCyberdyne,andoneofthepeoplewhoworkedforuslaterworkedonTerminatorwhatever-it-was.

KC:Wellthatwasmynextquestion.[Petelaughs]So,Imnotsurehowyouwanttoanswerthis,butthemovie,Terminator,isnotsofaroffbase.AmIright?

PP:No,itsnotsofaroffbaseatall.Oncewegotthoseworkinganditsinterestingtonotethatthecomputerchipweusedinthe1970s,therearemoreofthoseproducedmonthlythanalltheIntelchipsproducedinayear,eventoday.Becauseitsachipthatwasactuallydesignedlikeacomputer,whereastheIntelchipsarenotdesignedlikecomputers.

IntelispayingalotofroyaltiestovariouspeoplewhoworkedinandonvariouschipsthatevolvedovertheproperevolutionofcomputerchipswhatIconsidertobeproper.Wenowhaveachipthatsvery,verytiny,andhasanumberofcomputersbuiltintoitthatautomaticallylookatthetaskandadaptthemselves.Soyoumayhave10,20,30computerchipsworkingon30processesallatonce.

KC:Inthebodyofonerobot?

DW:Inachip.

PP:Well,inthebodyofonelittle,tinytenth-of-an-inch-squarechip.

KC:Thatsoperatingtherobot?

PP:Thatsoperatingarobot.Butoncewefiguredouttherightlanguagetouse,andtherightcomputerdesigntouse,Ithengotinvolvedwithanumberofpeopleworkingonbuildinganartificialintelligencechipthat...wellcall...basicallythecallonitwasafuzzylogicchip.

Itturnsouttheonlylogicthatsnotfuzzyisfuzzylogic.Itsachipthatcanlookatanumberofdifferentinputs,andfromthosemakeadecisionthatscorrect.

So,withtherobot,youcanbelookingatbumpsonthefloor;youcanbelookingatadoorwayascomparedtoawall.Youcanlookat

somebodystandingbetweenyouandthedoor;youcanlookatthewidthofthedoorandtheheightofthedooranddecidewhetheritcangothroughitornot.Itcangooverthereandmanipulatearoundtheperson,gothroughit,nottripoverthecatonthefloor,etcetera,etcetera,allusingfuzzylogic.

Then,becauseachipwasdoingdigitalcomputingafuzzylogicchipeitherdoesdigitally(ifitshigh-speedenough)[or]itdoesanaloguecomputingitlooksatthingsasweseethemintherealworld.Thefloorcanbelookedatdigitally,likeithadmillionsandmillionsoflittletinybumps,orlargerbumps;oritcanbelookedatanalogue-wise,becauseitcansensetherollofthefloorandmovethe

wheelsandso-forthsoitdoesnttipover.

KC:But,werenttheJapanesereallyadvancedintermsofrobotics?

PP:Well,IcantellyouthatwhenIwenttotheIdahoNationalEngineeringLabs,whichiswhattheAtomicEnergyCommissionbecame,whichwasoneofthenationslargestresearchcenters.ItsineasternIdaho.Ithinkthereare2,200Ph.D.sthatworkthere.Thewholetownisbuiltaround...infactseveraltownsarebuiltaround

thatcenter,andmuchgoesonthere.

Whenwewenttherevisitingwithsuper-capacitorsthatIbroughtoutoftheUkraine,IgottalkingtosomepeoplewhofoundoutIwastheonewhobuiltthemanipulators,andtheysaidtheyhadalargecontingencyofJapaneseroboticsexperts.Thiswasinabout1987,88,somewhereinthere.TheyhadalargeJapaneseconferenceovertryingtosellthemmanipulatorsandrobots,andwhentheysawmyrobotstheysaid:MyGod,wedonthaveanythinglikethis.Whereintheworlddidthesecomefrom?

Wesaid:Hell,wevehaditfor50years.[laughs]Soturnsoutitwasonlyabout43yearsatthattime,but

PP:Well,onecouldsaythat.

KC:Ijusthaveacuriousquestionandwehaventgoneoverthisaheadoftime,soIdontknowifyoucaneventalktothis,butitsnotdiabolicaloranything.But,ImcuriousbecauseIusedtoloverobots,andsortofwentontheNetandsortofstudied,andwasinterestedinhowfartheyveprogressedwithallofthat.Oneofthe

biggestproblemstheyusedtohavewaswhentheywantedthemtowalkuprightlikehumansthattheywouldfallover.Howdidyousolvethat?

PP:Well,wediditmuchthesamewaythatDeanKamenbuilthistwo-wheeledscooter.Areyoufamiliarwiththe

KC:Whichis?Ifyoucansay...

PP:Well,yousimplyhaveasensorthatsenseswhetheryoureuprightornot.Andifyourenotupright,thenyouusefuzzylogictoputitbackright.

BILLRYAN(BR):Presumably,thatsthekindofstufftheyputintheF-117.Itwouldhavefallenoutoftheskyifithadnthadthatkindof

PP:Forexample,theprogramminglanguagethatweuseiscalledFORTH,[spells]F-O-R-T-H.ItshouldhavebeencalledF-O-U-R-T-H,becauseitwasthefourthmajorprogramminglanguage,butinthosedays,computerswouldnttakefivecharacters,rather,sixcharacters,sotheyhadF-O-R-T-H.

So,whatIwaswonderingIthinkyouwereinvolvedinMKUltraandyoucanprobablytalkaboutthatsinceitsbeendeclassified,right?

PP:Well,ImdoingthingsallthetimethatIgetcallson,foranumberofdifferentgovernments,actually.ImactuallyamemberoftheAstronauticsAssociationforMankind,whichistheRussianequivalenttoNASA.Imontheboardofdirectors.

KC:So,whyarentyouontheboardofdirectorsforNASAifyoureontheRussianboard?

PP:Well,mainlybecauseIhavenodesiretobewithabunchofclowns.

KC:Okay...

PP:IfIwantedtobewithclowns,Idjoinacircus.

KC:So,yourereallyawareofthesecretspaceprogram,inessence,andyouknowthatNASAissomethingofafrontforalmostadistraction?

PP:Ihaventbeenassociatedwiththemforyears,soIhavenoideawhattheyredoing.

KC:Okay,butyousaidNASAsabunchofclowns.Whyareyousayingthat?

PP:Well,becauseallIhavetodoislookattheproductstheyhave.

KC:Whyaretheystill?Imean,Iknowtheyregoingtoretirethe

SpaceShuttleanyday,butitsbasicallyatincangoingupinspace.Whyaretheyevendealingwiththatkindoftechnologyatthispoint?Doyouknow?

PP:Becausetheyhaveitanditworks.They'vehadabout,maybeItdependsonhowyoulookatreality.TheyhavewhatIconsidertobeabout10%ofthebudgetthattheyreallyoughttohave.

IfyoulookatthethingsthatcameoutofthespaceprogramthroughNASA,probably50to60percentofthetechnologyweusetodaythroughoutallindustriescameoutofNASA:themetallurgytechnologyandalloys;thetemperature-resistantplasticsandmetals;large-scaleintegratedcircuits,youknow,basicallyeventhewholetransistortechnology.

Iworkedinthingslikethat.MycousinandIdidquiteanumberofspysatellites.WedidthesamplingarmthatwentontheVikingLandertoMars,which,bytheway,wasrunbyaFORTH-programmedcomputer.

So,Iworkedinandaroundthatarea.IworkedwithNorthAmericanRockwell.

KC:JPL?

PP:JPL.Anumberofdifferentplaces,andgottoseethethingsthatcameoutofthere.Igottoseebrandnewthingsthatwere20yearsaheadofanybodyonEarthactuallyapplied,andthingsthatweremadefromthem,andtheyweresentintospace,andtheyrecordedthingsfromspace.Thecamerathatyoureshootingmeon,theimagesensorintherewasbasicallymadeforuseinouterspace.Thatswheretheycamefrom.

So,ifyoulookatreturnoninvestment,thereisntacorporationeverinthehistoryofmankindthatreturnedsomuchontheinvestment,even10%,ofthereturnoninvestmentthatcameoutof

NASA.Itliterallytransformedourlivesintoawholenewcentury.

Yettheytakethat,whichistheonlysuccessstorythatIthinkmanreallyhas,andtotallymal-fundedit.Now,partofthereasonwasthattheywouldntpaytheappropriateamountofmoneytogetthebrainpowerthattheyneeded.PeopleearlyonworkedforNASA,notbecausetheygotpaidgoodmoney,butbecausetheygottoaccomplishtheirdream.WhenfinallyCongresssnuffledtheirdream,theyquitworkingforNASA,sonowyouhadclownsworkingforNASA.Itshouldhavebeenacircus.

Notthattherewerentgreatpeoplethere,andnotthattherearentgreatpeoplethere,buttheyretotallyfrustrated,Imsure.
