    Tethys Consulting), TRACECA, Blacka Commission, and those of direct andd i r e c t p r o j e c t b e n e f i c i a r i e szerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan,rkmenistan, Ukraine, Bulgaria,mania, and Turkey) met in Brussels,two consecutive days (28th and 29th

    ptember, 2010) in order to assess theogress achieved by the SASEPOLoject and to discuss and to set the

    undation for future TRACECA regionaltiatives in the field of maritime safety,curity and ship pollution prevention.

    The meeting was opened by Mr. Jean-uis Ville, Head of Unit of the EuropeAid-operation Office, who emphasized theportance of the SASEPOL project to the

    and appreciated the continuous effortsde by the beneficiary countries and theer major stakeholders (TRACECA, Blacka Commission and the indirectneficiaries).

    Presentations were then delivered by DGOVE on EU policy concerning maritimeety and security, and by SASEPOL key

    perts introducing the Terms of Referencethe National and Regional Working

    oups. The Black Sea Commissionhlighted recent achievements such assignature of a landmark Memorandum ofderstanding with the Internationalritime Organization and emphasized thenificance of regional cooperation.

    SASEPOL direct and indirectbeneficiaries reported on the progressachieved in the field of maritime safetyand security and pollution prevention, aswell as on specific national and regionalissues of individual or joint concern.Specifically, representatives of SASEPOLindirect beneficiaries (Bulgaria, Romania,and Turkey) emphasised their intent tobecome more involved in the projectactivities and offered their specificexpertise on a number of relevant nationaland regional issues.

    Most significantly, the participants

    agreed and signed a concludingmemorandum, outlining the cornerstonesof future inter-regional cooperation, whichis to be defined in a dedicated Action Planunder the TRACECA umbrella; given theadvanced state of institutionalization of theRegional Working Group, IMO will beinvited to future meetings as observer.

    The next Regional Working Groupmeeting is scheduled to take place inIstanbul (Turkey) on 1-2 February 2011.
