Properties Of Matter And Material
Introduction
There are 3 states of matter:
Solid
Liquid
Gas
There are many changes in states of matter: melting, freezing, boiling, condensation, sublimation and dissolving.
Elements
Elements: a substance that has just one kind of atom is called element.
There are 93 elements which occur naturally.
There are 24 man-made elements by using particle accelerators.
Particles are whizzed around inside the accelerator, and then made to crash into each other to make atoms of new elements.
Metals and Non-metals
Property Metals Non-Metals
Surface Shiny Dull
Physical state at roomtemperature
Usually solid [except Mercury]
Solid, Liquid, Gas
Strength Can be shaped by pressing and stretching without breaking easily
Solids are usually soft or brittle
Melting point Usually high Usually low
Boiling point Usually high Usually low
Density Usually high Usually low
Conduction of heat Good Very poor
Conduction of electricity Good Very poor
Metals and Non-metals
The air is the mixture of non-metal elements. Most of it is [78%] nitrogen and one fifth [20%] is made up of oxygen.
