Godalming

a lovingly restored ‘chocolate box cottage’ offers a wonderful combination of historic and modern features

This property was originally built around 1566 and can only be described as a ‘chocolate box’ cottage, set in the most stunning hamlet of Sandhills and surrounded by beautiful countryside. The current owners have lovingly restored and retained the quality and history to offer a truly amazing home with all the modern features you would wish for.

The property was originally a ‘smoke stack house’ i.e. a chimney with one oak frame bay providing one room downstairs and a single bedroom. It was originally used for weaving and the original holes for the loom are still visible. A second bay was added in the 18th century providing a larger room downstairs and a second bedroom.

In the 19th century a kitchen and third bedroom were added at the back. In 1980 an existing coal shed was converted into a second reception room along with a new hallway and front door. At some time a bathroom was added downstairs. In 2006 a new bathroom was added upstairs and the downstairs bathroom converted into utility room and a separate cloakroom.

The house was rewired at the same time. Other features are a large utility/boot room, leading to the garden. Also the office space offers potential to add a further bathroom/shower room to create a further bedroom en suite.

Vendors’ Comments :

We were living in south London and had spent many months looking for a property in the Godalming area with a village setting. When we saw the picture of the cottage we immediately viewed it and put in an offer at list price. We had to compete for it as many other buyers were interested. We were successful and moved in, in April 1999 and have never regretted it. There is a very good pub within walking distance and many more within 5 miles!

you’ll fall in love instantly, just like

the current owners did. and there’s a good pub within

walking distance!

A pretty brick wall and steps lead to a paved area leading to the garden and front door. A substantial, sunny garden offers a cleverly landscaped, tranquil setting with thoughtfully laid out borders featuring mature shrubs and fruit trees.

There is currently space allocated for a kitchen garden and there is a workshop with power. There are fabulous walks nearby to Brook, taking you past the donkey sanctuary and also to Witley.

enjoy this area of outstanding natural beauty

Location

Sandhills is located within the Surrey Hills, which is an area of outstanding beauty and was once popular with artists and writers. Nearby Wormley village is situated between Witley and Chiddingfold and is surrounded by wonderful countryside ideal for walking and riding, such as the Greensand Way, a long distance footpath which runs along the ridge upon which Wormley is situated. Witley Station (situated in Wormley) provides direct access into Waterloo taking approx 55 minutes, and the A3 linking the M25 and London’s airports is around 3 miles from the village centre. Godalming has a picturesque and historic town centre with superb restaurants, individual shops and superstores. Guildford, with its multitude of shops, theatres, cinemas and restaurants is around 7 miles away and there is an excellent selection of schools in the area that cater for most age groups.
