Professional Profile: John Nicholl - Head of PE/Head of Year 10

I grew up in Ballymena with my parents, brother and sister. At schoolI always had a keen interest in sport mainly playing Rugby, Football,Cricket and Table-tennis. My PE teachers were very important rolemodels who always encouraged me to take part in as many sports aspossible. I really enjoyed developing my skills, working as part of ateam, encouraging others around me and being part of the sportingfamily that my school offered.

After completing my A-Levels, I went onto to study at Belfast Instituteof Further and Higher Education, completing my HND in Sport andExercise Science. From BIFHE, I studied a BSc (Hons) degree atStranmillis College, Belfast in Sport & Leisure with PE.

After completing my degree, I decided to complete my PGCE in PE atthe University of Ulster, Jordanstown. I thoroughly enjoyed my courseas it provided me with more opportunities in coaching and teachingthrough different sports such as Gymnastics, Dance, Basketball andSwimming.

I love Cambridge House GS because of the environment we provide ourpupils to learn, develop and achieve through creativity with strongpastoral care along the way. To see the pupils, develop from Year 8 toYear 14 is very special, especially with those pupils who have such anactive participation towards my subject, PE. The school offers a vibrantcollection of sports with highly skilled coaches for all different sportingbackgrounds to cater for all their needs.

I believe that PE is so important in a child’s development as it offerssomething completely different to a classroom experience. In PE weaim to develop a pupil’s confidence, self-worth and offer an educationin how to look after their own body through strength & conditioningand personal hygiene. Working with others, problem solving, communication skills and a healthy body and mind are fundamental toa pupil growth and development at Cambridge House GS. I havethoroughly enjoyed my 6 years at Cambridge House and I hope to helpdevelop each pupil on their own journey throughout school not only inSport, PE but their life as a whole.

Rebecca Ellis - Biology Teacher

I grew up in Antrim with my parents and sister. I knew from a veryyoung age that I wanted to be a teacher. My sister often reminds me ofthe fact that I decorated our spare room like a classroom and madeher go to “school” on a Saturday morning! During my time at AntrimGrammar School I had many inspiring teachers who encouraged meto reach my potential and participate fully in school life. My Biology andChemistry teachers stand out in particular, they made learning scienceinteractive and fun. It was then that I realised that I wanted to pursuea career in teaching Science. It is my aim is to instil this interest inscience through my own teaching.

After completing my A-levels I went on to study Biological Sciences atQueen’s University. Throughout my time at University I volunteeredregularly at local primary schools teaching science and art lessons aswell as learning more about the teaching profession. As soon as Icompleted my degree I applied for a PGCE at Queen’s. I was thrilled toobtain a place and I thoroughly enjoyed the course. My second

placement during this course was in Cambridge House GrammarSchool. I learned so much during my time here and I knew this wasexactly the school environment that I would like to end up teaching in.I have really enjoyed my time at Cambridge House over the past twoyears. There is a real sense of community and I am very grateful towork in such a supportive and caring environment, both within theScience department and at a whole school level.

I really believe extra-curricular activities are essential for young peopleto pursue their interests as well as instil confidence and experiencethe school community. Running the Junior Science Club with mycolleagues has been a privilege. I am also very proud of our Eco-Committee. Our biggest task to date has been planting 400 trees in theschool grounds. We have also carried out a biodiversity survey of ourschool grounds, participated in several litter picks and started work on a ‘bug hotel’.
