Media and empowerment in journalism education
Panel discussionWorld Journalism Education Conference, Belgium, 2013
Democracy is in transition.
Media are in transition, from mass to networks.
Public journalism is a useful conceptual bridge in guiding
journalists through these transitions.
What does this mean for us as journalism educators?
We need to change how we define journalism to our students.
We need to develop resources, training and partnerships for
learning more sophisticated and effective engagement.
We need to organize our curriculum to incorporate more social and
participatory forms of journalism.
Finally, we have an opportunity to serve students from across
the university in teaching journalistic skills as a form of
democratic participation
