What are some Public Works jobs? • Construction Inspector• Project Manager• Public Facilities Maintenance Inspector• Contract Administrator• Procurement Specialist• Pavement Management System Analysis• Maintenance Worker• Maintenance Supervisor• Estimator• Scheduler• Materials Testing Technician• Heavy Equipment Operator• Grading Inspector• Permit Technician• Water Quality Inspector• NPDES Compliance Officer• Weed Abatement Specialist

Who should enroll to prepare for these jobs?• Anyone who likes to work outdoors all or part of

the day, in sometimes physically-demanding jobs.• Those who enjoy construction, engineering,

working on a project and being able to see the results of their efforts in their community.

• People who can see themselves as part of the action and solution when disasters, such as fires or floods, strike.

• Individuals who use technology to effectively communicate with others to actively think, process information, make choices and execute skills.

• Career-minded individuals who want a long-term future in public service.

What is Public Works?Public Works, often called “the heart of the community” is that part of cities, counties and the state that supports the construction, maintenance and ongoing operations of infrastructure such as highways and roads, bridges, dams, flood control channels, parks and public spaces. Public Works departments also respond to emergencies such as floods, fire, storm damage or other natural disasters.

How is the job market? This is a fast-growing public sector. The continuing development of metropolitan and suburban areas, the need for new or updated infrastructure and the recent passing of a multibillion dollar bond measure means there is a lot of work to be done-as well as ongoing repair. There are new jobs and promotion opportunities created due to planned retirements of the “baby boomer” generation.

There are also opportunities in the private sector, with consulting firms in engineering, construction contractors and project managers.
