Entering a New Year and adjusting to going back to life after the holidays is not easy. There are many questions we face. What will this year be like? Will I be successful or disappointed? Will my family be safe and secure? Do I need to make a change in my life? Am I ready to accept the responsibility given to me as an adult?

The Scripture readings this weekend help us to be mindful that God is there to guide us along the way. The Israelites were waiting for the Messiah to come. They were hoping in great anticipation for Him to arrive. So when Jesus asked the question, “Who are you looking for?”, he responded by saying “Come and you will see”. Answering and responding to God is not easy. There are many things to take into consideration. Is this what I want to do with my life? How do I hear God calling me? How open are you to the Spirit in your life? We are asked to be patient and our answer will come.

A reminder that this Friday, January 19, is Comedy Night. Don’t forget to purchase your tickets. Doors will open at 7:00pm and the Comedy begins at 8:00pm.

Next Saturday, January 20, the 4:00pm Mass will be Fr. McCarthy’s final Mass as he prepares to leave for Rome to begin his new appointment. There will be a reception for him after Mass in the St. Joseph Room. We want to send him away with our best wishes and reassure him that he will always be in our prayers.

A reminder that our Spring Fundraiser is just around the corner. Tickets for the Grand Raffle are $50.00. Entrance Tickets to the event are $35.00. I would encourage you to start telling your friends and alumni to get together to come and celebrate the 65th year of our school and help to make it a fun and memorable event.

I am also encouraging the women of the parish to consider going on the next CRHP Weekend on February 24th and 25th. It is a wondering and spiritually uplifting opportunity. It is a great way to prepare yourself for the season of Lent. It is a decision that you will not regret making.

Have a good week.

God Bless,

As we begin ordinary time for a few weeks before Lent begins on Ash Wednesday (February 14), take time to reflect on your accomplishments during the Advent season. What did you do to improve your life and the lives of others? What more could you have done? Use this time before Lent begins to think about what more you could share with others during the Lenten season.

PARISH LIBRARY NEWS Marge Fenelon, author, wife and mom of four, can spot

the divine in the comments of her kids, as well as the tensions and sadness of life (i.e. when a kid leaves the nest). Her book's title, "When's God Gonna Show Up?" came from the mouth of her 4-year-old during Eucharistic adoration. Fenelon's aim is to tickle the reader's funny bone, sometimes make 'em cry, and help us share God's grace with others. She's divided the book into liturgical seasons and feast days – and chapter titles range from "Whymania," and "Chinese Lion Dance," to "Who's in Control Anyway," and "Princess Demento." Find our "library nook" in Martyrs' Cry Room. Take a look and take a book, before or after Masses each weekend. For more info, call Terri, at (773) 239-1041.

Hello to all women in Queen of Martyrs Parish! Over the next couple months, we will be “spotlighting” the leaders of our next CRHP Retreat, which is February 24-25, 2018. If you have any questions, or are interested in attending, please do not hesitate to reach out to the women you see here. Questions can also be emailed to Mary Pat Anders at [email protected] or Terry Reidy [email protected].

Pictured here is Jenny Finn. She has been a member of Queen of Martyrs for 9

years. Jenny works in Human Resources.

What she got out of CRHP: It was an incredible experience that awakened a spirit within me while urging me to seek truth and understanding in a faith I've grown up with my entire life

Queen of Martyrs Preschool Student Donates Hair to Help Others in Need

David Apablaza a student in the Three Year Old preschool program at Queen of Martyrs School grew his hair for two full years with the idea of donating it to children and young adults suffering from medically-related hair loss.

David did not get a haircut since December 2015. His parents discussed the idea with him and let him know that by growing his hair to 8 inches in length before cutting he would be benefiting kids that suffer hair loss from childhood cancer treatments, burns, and Alopecia. David was on board and very excited to help other kids! After David received his hair cut his pony tails were mailed to the “Children With Hair Loss” Organization. This non-profit organization provides human hair replace-ments at no cost to the children and young adults. David is pictured before and after his haircut. Queen of Martyrs is very proud of David and his family for participating in such a worthy cause!

“This week I had the opportunity to chaperone the mission trip to Harlan, KY. The word “chaperone” typically conjures- up images of keeping teens from breaking the rules. This experience was nothing like that! Firsthand, I witnessed God’s love in the teens as they worked tirelessly to help the impoverished people of Harlan. I saw them overcome fears, speak openly about

their faith, and allow themselves to open their hearts and minds to new friendships and adventures. St. Francis said, “It is in giving that we receive,” in giving my time and energy to the Mission Trip I received much more than I could have imagined-spiritually, physically, and emotion-ally. Our teens are absolutely fabulous and our world will be in good hands when they take the reins in the future.” —Sam [Adult Leader]

Please Make Your Gift to the 2018 Annual

Catholic Appeal “Come, Follow Me”

Many families in our parish will be receiving the Annual Catholic Appeal request mailing from Cardinal Cupich. On behalf of those served by the ministries and services funded by the ACA, we thank you for your gifts. Please return your response as soon as possible. The ACA offers a wonderful opportunity to answer Jesus’ call to “Come, Follow Me.” In addition to providing for ministries and services throughout the Archdiocese, the Appeal also funds services that are of great help to ministries here in our Parish. For example, Appeal funds support parishes and schools serving financially challenged communities, support for youth, young adult, campus, and adult religious education ministries, continuing education for lay volunteers and staff serving parish communities, assisting the poor and vulnerable overseas, continuing education for seminarians and priests ordained for the Archdiocese of Chicago, programs for marriage preparation, marriage support and family ministry, and support for Chicago Fire and Police department chaplaincies and other community ministries As we contemplate God’s many gifts to us, we should also reflect on our gratitude for these gifts. Your financial support for the work of our Parish, our Archdiocese, and the Church throughout the world is, in fact, one way to express this gratitude. Please give generously to the 2018 Annual Catholic Appeal. When our parish reaches its goal of $_____________ in paid pledges, 100% of the additional funds received will be returned to us for use in our Parish.
