“EMV”Definition
EMVstandsforEuropay,MasterCard,andVisa,thethreecompaniesthatoriginallycreatedthestandard.ThestandardisnowmanagedbyEMVCo,aconsortiumwithcontrolsplitequallyamongVisa,Mastercard,JCB,AmericanExpress,ChinaUnionPay,andDiscover.
TheEMVstandardcoverstheprocessingofcreditanddebitcardpaymentsusingacardthatcontainsamicroprocessorchip.ChipandPINDefinition
Thesetransactionsareoftenreferredtoas"ChipandPIN"becausePINentryisrequiredtoverifythecustomeristhegenuinecardholder.ThisisasimplificationsincetheEMVspecificationsincludeothercardholderverificationmethodsaswell,anddonotnecessarilyrequirethemanualentryofaPINnumber.EMVvs.MagneticStripeTransactions
Unlikemagneticstripetransactions,wheretypicallyonlythecard'strack2datacontainingthecardnumberandexpirydateisprocessed,everychipcardtransactioncontainsnumerousitemsofinformationtobeexchangedbetweenthecard,theterminalandtheacquiringbankorProcessor’shost.ThisrequirestheEMVcardreaderdevice/terminaltoperformmanystagesofcomplexprocessing,includingcryptographicauthentication,tosuccessfullycompleteatransaction.

EMVactivationismanagedandperformedbyMSISolutions’CloudServicesTeam.EMVcannotbeactivatedbyahoteluser.Deviceconfiguration,however,ismanagedinCloudPMGMFunctions.
