I would like to thank the members of the Limestone Quilters' Guild for their kind thoughts and cards in the passing of my mother at the beginning of this month. Quilting has been a low priority item for the past three months during my mother's illness: mainly community quilt workshops.

However, it is time to get back to a "normal" life, which in my case, includes a fair bit of quilting.

The quilt show is coming up fast!

Hopefully everyone will get their entries completed in time. It should be a great show. There is so much talent in the Limestone Quilters' Guild and the Heirloom Quilters' Guild. It will be great to see the great variety of quilts, wall hangings, wearables, home decor items, post cards, etc. Don't forget to stop at the boutique: do your birthday shopping, Christmas shopping, and items for yourself.

Also, volunteers are needed. Try your hand at several areas: lunch room, white gloves, set up, take down.

I would also like to thank the members of the executive for their hard work in providing a great program the past two years while I have been president and wish all the best for the incoming executive headed by Mary Waugh as president.

Anne Dickson

President’s Message

The objectives of the organization shall be: to foster interest, awareness and education in the area of quilt making. The Guild is to be a non-profit organization with all the monies being used to promote its objectives and support local charities, organizations and educational facilities.

FEATURED QUILTER BETH ABBOTT

Beth pictured above with her “Spirit Rising” quilt which has just returned from its international tour with SAQA. She is an accomplished spinner, weaver, quilter, author and teacher of fabric art. She enthusiastically shares her vast knowledge of colour, texture and fabric as anyone who has taken one of her courses knows!

Drop by to say hello at the show!

Quilts Kingston Volunteers Still Needed! Please sign up at the June 3rd Guild Meeting! …all volunteers will be entered into a LQG 25th Anniversary draw, sponsored by Eric Simkins, for a sewing machine plus accessories worth $2,800! See page 10.

After 33 years as a high school teacher Beth turned her direction to Fibre Art as a new career. Beth earned her Master Spinner certificate in 1990, and her Indepth Study was published as a book in 2001. Icelandic Fleece - A Fibre for All Reasons is the only complete study of the Icelandic fleece and its spinning qualities available in English. As a recognized teacher of the art of spinning, Beth has instilled in hundreds of students a love of colour and texture and luxury fibres. Now Beth is exploring colour and texture through fibre art - creating new work with fabrics and embellishments to satisfy her need to create and make a statement. After studying through workshops for at least 30 years, Beth graduated in 2008 from the Textile Arts certificate program at St. Lawrence College, and moved out to explore new directions in the field of fibre art and quilting.

The work on display shows a little of the variety of Beth’s work, with the interplay of colours always being the focus to create the mood of the piece. While she loves all colours, colour schemes which are almost complementary are the most exciting. Many of the fabrics are hand dyed or wonderful batiks, occasionally embellished with embroidery and beads to accentuate the colours and the feeling of the piece. Beth is still exploring and considers herself still a “work in progress”, a “perpetual learner”. This comes from a thirst for “knowing how it is done” and a healthy respect for those who have come before us and worked their creativity by hand. She feels these skills need to continue to be developed as part of our creative work or they will be lost. Because she enjoys experimenting, she continues to learn new techniques and ideas in quilting and fibre art - this is when she feels most creative and enthusiastic. Beth’s teaching is still a part of her life as she shares her expertise and experience to encourage students to explore on their own. Beth offers workshops both privately and with guilds in quilting colour and design, embroidery, and spinning. She also writes regularly for spinning magazines.

LQG: What is or was your profession? LMcQ: I started teaching elementary school in 1961 and retired in 2001. LQG: How long have you been a member of LQG? LMcQ: I joined LQG in October, 2001. LQG: What is your favourite thing or activity with the guild? LMcQ: I enjoy making block of the month quilts and seeing the show and tell items. LQG: Have you held any volunteer jobs with the guild. If so, what/how long. LMcQ: I was social convener from September, 2001 to June, 2005. From September, 2005 to

June, 2007, I was vice-president and then I became past-president until June, 2011. Since then I’ve been the program convener.

LQG: What is your favourite kind of quilting? LMcQ: I really enjoy paper piecing because the points are so sharp. LQG: Which type of Q do you hate to do? LMcQ: I dislike doing log cabin blocks. In one of my first quilting classes, I had a bad experience

that included them. I didn’t know that I was to square each time that I added a row of strips! I did a lot of reverse sewing in order to make them fit!

LQG: How many UFOs do you have and how big is your Q stash? LMcQ: UFOs that I’ve started must be about 30 and I have fabric and patterns for another 15-20

projects. I have a 2 sliding door closet with 4 shelves that hold most of my stash. My projects with fabric are located elsewhere.

LQG: Do you have a process for working with new Q projects or do you just wing it? LMcQ: I’m fortunate that I have a large sewing room (13’ x 14’) so I can spread my stuff. Before

I start I like to tidy my room. Then, I choose and cut my fabric and lay it out in the order that I’ll be sewing. My iron is close by so I can press my seams. A cold drink and jujubes keep me fueled as I sew. Of course, the radio is turned on.

LQG: What other hobbies/activities do you enjoy? LMcQ: I enjoy gardening, cooking, going to quilt shows/retreats and visiting with my family. LQG: How do your family/friends deal with/support your Q habit? LMcQ: My family encourages me to attend quilt trips and retreats. My friend, Susan, helps me

find new projects to buy.

1. Library Look for a new magazine in the library come September. We are subscribing to 'Primitive Quilts' instead of 'A Needle Pulling Thread'. Our subscription to 'The Canadian Quilter' continues, and back issues of 'A Needle Pulling Thread' will still be available to borrow.

Library items which are 90+ days overdue: the executive committee has decided that any person who has a library item on loan for 90 days after it was due (i.e., 120 days after the date it was borrowed) may look forward to having their name appear in this newsletter under the headline 'In the Sin Bin'. The executive committee is looking for a Guild member to take on the duties of librarian. I am not going to be in Kingston in the winter (going north, not south), and have decided to relinquish the post. To find out more about what's involved, contact Marina Wright (613 544 2626 / [email protected]) or the undersigned (613-547-4319 / [email protected])

2. LQG Executive Volunteers Wanted!! Volunteering is obviously not a 4-letter word; in fact it’s fun/practical/legitimate way to get out of doing other stuff that you are not much interested in or passionate about (lol)… So please sign up for an Executive position at the June dinner meeting. WE ARE LOOKING FOR MORE THAN ONE NAME PER POSITION (this lowers what is expected from each individual throughout the year, yay:.) Please step up if you want to continue enjoying our Guilds activities and programs. If you decide or are considering joining, please call Marina 613-544-2626 and you can also join us at Claire W’s wonderful farm on June 17th for a Strawberry Social, to meet past and present Exec’s; carpooling available. All positions are open except President (Mary Waugh); Past-president (Anne Dickson). Some knowledge of Excel would be lovely for the Treasurer’s position. Shadowing of positions is welcome.

3. Program Committee Report

This past year you have been entertained by seven speakers with their trunk shows and you were able to take part in five workshops. Thank you to everyone who participated in these workshops. Only one class had to be cancelled due to lack of interest. Our 2015/2016 season will bring Deanne Gaudaur, Brenda Miller, Mr. and Mrs. Johnson, Bethany Garner, Trent Valley Guild, Pat Lemaire and others. In November bring $$$ to our meeting and shop at the Mad About Patchwork store. There will be workshops on a voyageur bag, dyeing and free motion quilting. We will have another UFO challenge. A retreat is October and two bus trips in June will round out our 2015/16 season. We always welcome suggestions for speakers and ideas for workshops. Thank you for your continued support.

On April 7, we met again at Anne’s for our monthly workday. Ten people showed up this time, Susan Clarke, Holly Moyes, Holly Lavergne, Heather Buchan, Zarah Kerr, Jeanne Stoness, Dianne Goodyear, Anne, myself (Brynhild) and my granddaughter Caroline. This month we concentrated on working on the preemie quilts. Eleven tops were designed and pieced; two of them completely finished quilted and bound. The rest were in various stages of completion. We also made a few kits to be available at the next meeting. Holly M. also cut out and hemmed several little sheets for the hospital, and six quilts were pin basted and ready for quilting.

In May, we had a record number of ladies working on the quilts. There were 15 of us, which included Jane MacDonald, one of Jean’s friends, who showed up with 6 finished quilts to donate. Also my four sisters from Norway were there. They are not all quilters, but there was plenty of work to be done on the preemie quilts, - machine sewing, pillow turning, ironing etc. so everyone was kept busy the whole day. Holly M. had several more preemie quilt tops done, and they all were finished by the end of the day. Anne and Zarah apparently kept quilting till five o’clock in order to get them all done. At the last count, there were 26 ready to be sent to the hospital. Another bag of donated fabric had to be sorted, and as usual there were tops to pin baste and backings to piece. I believe we added five more basted quilts to Anne’s stack by her sewing machine.

Participation in the Quilt Block Groups is a nice way to contribute and feel involved with the guild. These groups support the Social Committee in providing snacks and refreshments at break time and in assisting with the activities of the meeting. Each guild member is asked to volunteer only once during the membership year. A notice of names for the group membership for the next guild meeting is posted monthly at the snack table. If you are unable to take part as assigned, you are asked to switch with a fellow guild member or ask the co-ordinator to be re-assigned at a later time.
