During the past month, we have enjoyed perfect weather, a beautiful Canadian Trunk Show, started new projects and maybe finished some old pieces, that have been waiting for the right moment. The Quilt Show work is chugging along the track, destination June 2018. All of your contributions of time and goods are very much appreciated by me. I have so much to be thankful for at L.Q.G. and I hope each of you is thankful for some part of our group. Enjoy your family, friends and feasting as we head into the colder, darker months. Remember: a clean house means company is coming, or the sewing machine is broken.

In Appreciation

De Mystifying the Quilt Show Process

The purpose of the Limestone Quilters' Guild is to foster interest and education in the art of quilting. One of the most important ways that we do this is with our Quilt Show and Sale, Quilts Kingston. We put this show on in conjunction with the Heirloom Quilters Guild. We invite local vendors and other fibreart clubs, as we look upon ourselves as one quilting community.

It is also our major fundraiser to support our Community Quilts program that donates hundreds of quilted items to the community each year, to pay for the monthly programs and to enhance the library. It is planned for every third or fourth year because it is a lot of work, and to ensure we have lots of new quilts and quilted items to show, and sell. It is our chance to show the public the work of our members and every member is encouraged to submit at least one item. The design team tries to balance the numbers by each individual. Your quilt will not have to be judged unless requested. This year, we are adding a new section for members who are submitting their first entry ever in the show. There will also be sections devoted to Modern Quilts, Canada Themed Quilts, Wearable Art, Postcards, Home Decor items,

Page 4: Quips - WordPress.com · 6/10/2010  · quilt, the better the show. You will be notified at the May meeting which quilts to bring on drop -off day. They will have to be fan folded

naturally bedquilts and wall hangings both hand stitched and machine pieced and quilted are highlighted. We are continuing the Children's Section. Each member may sponsor one child's quilt. The whole process of preparing for our quilt show often seems overwhelming for some. At least one quilt from every member will be accepted into the show, and as many more space allows will be included and still make the show a beautiful gallery of quilts. To give time for the preparation of the catalogue of quilts, labels, and the design of the show, you will be asked to submit a registration form and good quality picture of your quilt near April. These same pictures will be used for Publicity. The design team will decide where each quilt will be placed - on black or white backdrops or back to back with other quilts (either the same size or with complementary backings). For this reason, you will be asked for the exact size of your quilt and a sample of the background fabric. The team groups quilts artistically, so the better your picture reflects the true colours of your quilt, the better the show. You will be notified at the May meeting which quilts to bring on drop -off day. They will have to be fan folded and put in a bag with a label. A CD showing pictures and information about all the quilts is also prepared. There will be several "photo days " organized so your quilt can be photographed prior to the show. It takes 2 days to set up the show and we will be looking for lots of volunteers. On the first day, the stands, poles, rods etc. are delivered from the storage unit and backdrops are hung and steamed. Some of the smaller displays are hung and hopefully a few quilts. On the second day, the rest of the show is hung and properties added. The kitchen is prepared, the admission area is prepared, vendors arrive to set up, and the boutique and other group displays are arranged. The Community area is set up as well. After all the quilts are up, judging of quilts entered for prizes is done and then the labels are attached to the quilts. The show is ready. During the show, lots of help is needed to run the lunchroom and boutique, staff the admissions and raffle desks and be “white glove ladies”. White glove people are assigned to specific areas to visit with the public and be sure only those with gloves touch the quilts. A Chart asking for volunteers to fill shifts will be available in the spring. All this probably seems " over the top” for many but it does make our show one of the best. It is also the reason, we only do it every three or four years. For now, we ask all members to work on finishing their quilts, to help in making articles to sell or put on consignment in the boutique, and to help with publicity. Word of mouth is the best publicity. Posters and bookmarks will be distributed in the new year. This show is our chance to educate the public about our guild and passion for quilting as well as make enough of a profit to pay the bills for the next few years. It will require everyone's help to be a success.

Travel & Retreats

Quilt Retreat The retreat is ready for October 12-15. McIntosh Inn, here we come! I am looking forward to the time away with friends. Friends are going to advise me about colour choices, block placement, and life, in general. But, participants have to remember a few things. They are: projects, sewing machines, with ALL parts, sewing tools, a shareable snack, three fat quarters: blue, green, and yellow side of the colour wheel, and your guild pin. Good for discounts. The shops have been warned that we are coming, so service will be as prompt as you wish. Arrive in Morrisburg after 11:00 on Thursday morning.

Grand Rapids I am meeting with Kristine, of Maple Leaf Tours, in October. Information will be available at the November meeting. Remember, the dates of the trip are August 20-25, 2018. It is definitely time to go to a bigger city, after our fun in Shipshewana and Paducah. All reservations will be through Maple Leaf Tours and book using a credit card, for extra insurance, as well as adding any supplemental insurance you have, or choose to buy. Lessons learned should be applied! Susan Clarke

Block of the Month

I hope everyone is enjoying working on their BOM blocks. We had a wonderful first Sew Day hosted by Deb in September and had a good turnout. I was able to teach them how to use the ruler to make half square triangles and flying geese without any waste fabric. I showed them how to sew the pieces together. It was a lot of fun. I will be demonstrating the use of the Essential Triangle Tool at the meeting, as well as the Easy Angle Ruler and Companion Angle ruler. It really is easy once you get the hang of it. The October blocks will be available on the website the same day as the meeting. Here is the website: https://limestonequiltersguild.wordpress.com/ Look under the Block of the Month page. We will have another Sew Day in October. It is tentatively scheduled for October 12th from 10:00 to 4:00. We will send an email out with the concrete details for people to sign up. I hope you can join us.

Library News

We received several more books plus numerous magazines at the September meeting. Thanks to all who donated them! Because of this, we will again put out only books acquired over the past two years. That makes it easier to see the new books. If anyone needs a book on a particular subject, they can ask the library staff and one of us will check the bins for the needed book.

I had been unable to find the magazine Modern Patchwork, but Doreen emailed me and told me where to find it. So, I bought the fall issue. It has several good hints, eg: Hourglass Blocks, Curved Piecing, Sew Perfect Y- seams, Flying Geese and Half Square Triangles - 8 at a time. It will be especially useful to new quilters!

In September, 27 books were borrowed. Not all of the 68 books that were out over the summer got returned. So please check to see if you have any of those books and return them at the next meeting. Thank you.

Fabric Postcards

I hope everyone had a chance to see the wonderful "Canada 150" post cards on display at the September meeting. Beautiful! The theme for October was "Squash and Pumpkins". I am looking forward to seeing the harvest! There is always room for more members in the PostCard Group. If you are interested in trying it for even a month, feel free to contact me ([email protected] or on my cell at 613-328-0766) to get into the mailing rotation and/or some tips on making fabric postcards!! There are also plenty of on-line tutorials on making postcards. The theme for November is "Birds/Migration" and December's is "Season's Greetings", mainly because I enjoy making Christmas cards!! :-) There is NO post card for January (since December is just too busy with festivities!). Starting in February the theme is "Inspired by Shakespeare", March is "Beads & Stitch", April is "Rainy Days", May is "Include or be Inspired by a Candy Wrapper" (!!!), and June is "Maps/Travel". Have fun! Darlene Moritz

Community Quilts

Workshops are usually held the first Tuesday after the first Wednesday (Guild meeting night). The exception is in December when the workshop is the first Tuesday of the month. All members are welcome to participate. Quilts are made for many local organizations such as Providence Care, several programs at Kingston General Hospital (neo-natal unit, Help Us Grow Strong [H.U.G.S.] program, the Boutique, Pediatric Oncology, In-patient chemotherapy unit), placemats for Meals on Wheels, Santa Sacks for the Weller Street Salvation Army Church, individual requests for quilts for ill or grieving friends or relatives, raffles for charitable organizations. Each quilt has a label that says" Made with Love and Care by members of the Limestone Quilters' Guild, Kingston, Ontario" and the year it was made. We try to have a number of quilt kits available at all the meetings for those members who wish to help with the community quilts, but are unable to attend a workshop. The workshops are held at 1411 Tamarac Street from 10 to 4 (or any portion of that time). A reminder notice will be sent out the week-end prior to the workshop. There is a pot luck lunch. There is usually a soup on. It would be appreciated if attendees let Anne know by phone (613-384-4564) or email ([email protected]) if possible. It makes it much easier to know how much soup to make. Please bring your own cutter. There are lots of mats and rulers. Bring your sewing machine if possible. If you prefer not to bring your machine there are a couple here to use and lots of jobs to do that do not require a machine. Since the June 2017 newsletter, there have been three workshops. All were well attended – June, 18 members attended; July – 8 and August – 10. At these workshops we concentrated on finishing UFOs from donations from estates over the last few years. Borders were put on assembled centres of tops, pin basting to “sandwich” tops, making binding, etc. There will be kits available (mainly wheel chair quilts) to be pieced into tops, “sandwiched” quilts to be quilted, quilted tops to have the binding and labels attached. Over the summer, quilts have been delivered to various KGH programs – 13 to H.U.G.S./Boutique;5 to Pediatric Chemotherapy, 2 to Inpatient Chemotherapy. Quilts were also given to several refugee families. Please try to join us if possible. It is a wonderful day of sewing, friendship and wonderful food!! We are looking forward to another very successful year.

Threadworks Exhibition The amazing traveling exhibition that is sponsored by the well recognized THREADWORKS team, Elizabeth Duggan Litch and Sharron Deacon Begg and the CONNECTIONS Fibre Artists, along with the Ontario Network of Needleworkers. THREADWORKS, is currently being exhibited in Gananoque through October 30th ... and well worth the drive! THREADWORKS has been an amazing show, shared across Ontario for the past 25 years and with 11 separate shows during that time frame. The current exhibition has been seen in six galleries across Ontario over the past 20 months and just arrived in Gananoque this past week. In the Arthur Child Heritage Museum Gallery you will find the many works shared from the beautiful collection of work on tour that will speak to each of you in very special ways - the techniques incorporated in the artwork are very well executed and the variety amazing! Jewellery, art quilts, sculpture, photo transfer, embroidery and hand stitch that will inspire and bring you close to the special effort that has gone into each individual piece. Large pieces that were designed for the walls and exciting small works that exemplify the talent and special skills of the stitchers. Hoping you might have the opportunity between now and October 30th to visit the Arthur Child Heritage Centre along the beautiful St. Lawrence River in Gananoque and visit this truly beautiful exhibition of art quilts and fibre art pieces that are currently on display. A number of well known local artists have work in the show as well as artists from across Ontario and indeed Canada. The Museum will also be of interest as the keeper of an amazing collection of works that profile the history of the St. Lawrence River, the early life along the river and the talented artisans whose work is housed at the Museum. Husbands will have time to explore the shipping and outdoor exhibits while YOU enjoy the artwork. Children's exhibits are hugely important to the museum as well - so everyone is welcome. Meet A Guild Member An interview with Phyllis Langridge

How long have you been making quilts? Would you describe your learning process?

I have been quilting since 2008. It was something that I thought I would like to try. When I retired to Kingston I found I had a number of friends who quilted. They helped me get started by advising on what sewing machine to buy and what supplies I needed. For the first few years I enrolled in a lot of quilting classes which gave me a good base. Although I am not a prolific quilter, I try to do as much as I can between traveling, cottaging and babysitting.

Why do you spend so much time on such a craft?

I love the feeling of creating something out of beautiful materials. It challenges me to stretch myself in many ways - choosing colours and patterns/designs, sewing precision and new techniques. I especially like the camaraderie of belonging to the Guild. Sharing an interest with like-minded people is a very rewarding experience. Quilting is addictive!

What kind of quilts do you like best? What kind of quilts do you like to make best?

Modern quilting is my favourite but I am currently trying to finish up a log cabin sampler that I started in 2010. It is a paper piecing project and the fabrics I liked then are entirely different than what I like best now. I like to try new techniques all the time. That is probably why I am not great at any one thing and why I have so many UFOs.

What materials do you like for batting? What kind do you use? How do you determine what kind to use?

I like to use Warm & Natural, 100% cotton batting. It was the one recommended to me when I first started to quilt and has remained my go to batting although I do pick up other battings when I find them on sale. For long arm quilting, the person I have used to quilt my full-size quilts prefers 80% cotton, 20% polyester as she finds it needles better. The type I use depends on what the project calls for. I have made a lot of purses and bags that call for fusible fleece so I always keep some on hand, too.

If you wanted help with your quilting, who would you ask? Why?

My sewing sisters. We get together once a month to share and sew. It is a rewarding day because I never fail to learn new quilting techniques or creative ideas. They never complain about helping me. I continue to learn so much from them!

Page 14: Quips - WordPress.com · 6/10/2010  · quilt, the better the show. You will be notified at the May meeting which quilts to bring on drop -off day. They will have to be fan folded

Quips

Do you use quilts as bedcovers or bedspreads? Do you prefer quilts over blankets or bedcovers? Why or why not?

I love the look of a quilt on a bed. I am a very practical person so I want my quilts to be used. However, I do like a blanket in the summer as they are lighter and generally cooler especially at the cottage.

What quilt do you want to make that you have never made?

I would love to make one with circles. I have a pattern that I want to make but I have been restricting my fabric purchasing because of the projects I have on hand! Must complete the two quilts that I have materials for first!

How do you decide what patterns to make?

Fabric and patterns find me. When I attend a quilt show, I love to look for new patterns and fabric. I pick ones that I think I am capable of making - no longer restricting myself to beginner projects but I am not ready for intricate piecing yet.

Have you ever taught someone to quilt?

For our last quilt show, I taught my grandson to piece a quilt. He didn’t fall in love with the process but who knows maybe someday he will become a quilter.

How do you choose your colours? What are your favourites?

I am still trying to develop my eye for colour. I have changed my likes from subdued greens and browns to more modern colours especially blues and fuchsias. I am learning to add that splash of colour that really makes a difference. I still have a long way to go and am so glad of the help I receive from my friends.

Remember to Sign in at Every Meeting Please remember to sign in at every meeting you attend. The book will be placed on the 50/50 table at each meeting. These names are used for the attendance draw so it is important that you register.

Participation in the Quilt Block Groups is a nice way to contribute and feel involved with the guild. These groups support the Social Committee in providing snacks and refreshments at break time and in assisting with the activities of the meeting. Each guild member is asked to volunteer only once during the membership year. A notice of names for the group membership for the next guild meeting is posted monthly at the snack table. If you are unable to take part as assigned, you are asked to switch with a fellow guild member or ask the coordinator to be re-assigned later.

Duties for Monthly Groups Selling 50/50 tickets, selling Fat Quarter tickets, selling dinner tickets, assisting the guest speaker, assisting setting-up and cleaning the snack table, hanging Show and Tell, taking books in and out for the library, attendance, and tidying after the December and June dinners. You may be asked to do more than one job, during an evening, but they are easy and a great way to meet people and to say hello. The following are the group setups for this year, however, as you know, life sometimes has a way of affecting our plans, so you may be asked to change the month assigned to you. We will try to give you as much notice as we possibly can. If your name appears in a month that you cannot attend, please contact Holly Lavergne at 613-386-5209 or [email protected]. Please do not worry if your name does not appear on any of the lists as we need extra people if something happens.
