A2LA R212 – Specific Requirements: Nondestructive Testing and Inspections Document Revised: 03/05/18 Page 1 of 3 L:\Requirements\R212 – Specific Requirements: Nondestructive Testing Laboratory Accreditation Program INTRODUCTION This document describes the accreditation requirements applicable to the Nondestructive Testing (NDT) performed by both laboratories and inspection bodies. These requirements are designed to meet the needs of users looking for quality NDT services. Internationally accepted accreditation criteria, guidance documents developed by ASTM Committees E-36 and E-7, and individual U.S. military and ASME requirements form the basis for accrediting organizations under this field. One of the major objectives of A2LA is to provide regulators responsible for approving NDT organizations with an effective alternative for evaluating and recognizing qualified organizations. A2LA is committed to working with federal, state and commercial regulators to realize this objective. The A2LA accreditation process is described in the A2LA General Requirements for Accreditation booklet. The scope of this field includes the following technologies: radiography, magnetic particle, ultrasonic, liquid penetrant, electromagnetic, neutron radiography, visual examination, leak (bubble, pressure change, halogen diode and mass spectrometer), and acoustic emission. Applications for accreditation may be made for one or more of the technologies listed above. When applying, the laboratory is requested to complete the NONDESTRUCTIVE FIELD OF TESTING SELECTION LIST and an inspection body is requested to provide a proposed draft scope of accreditation GENERAL CRITERIA The general criteria for accreditation are contained in ISO/IEC 17025 for testing laboratories and ISO/IEC 17020:2012 for inspection bodies. Contact A2LA Headquarters or visit the A2LA web site www.A2LA.org for information on how to obtain the appropriate requirements document. SPECIFIC CRITERIA Specific criteria are generally an elaboration on or interpretation of the general criteria plus those requirements of accreditation applicable to a certain field of testing or inspection, testing/inspection technology, type of test or inspection, or specific test or inspection. To be accredited under the NDT field, laboratories and inspection bodies must conform to the applicable requirements of the latest versions of the methods on their proposed Scope of Accreditation. There is also the option of being assessed to ASTM E543, Standard Practice for Evaluating Agencies Performing Nondestructive Testing and/or ASTM E1212, Standard Practice for Quality Control Systems for Nondestructive Testing Agencies. Organizations that choose to be accredited to ASTM E543 must perform a self-assessment using the checklist in ASTM E1359, Standard Guide for Evaluating Capabilities of Nondestructive Testing Agencies. The completed E1359 checklist must be submitted to the A2LA assessor(s) prior to the assessment. EQUIPMENT CALIBRATIONS: The following equipment used in NDT testing and inspections is required to meet the A2LA P102- A2LA Policy on Metrological Traceability; all other NDT equipment not listed below must be checked and/or standardized in accordance with the method being used. Magnetic Particle (MT): Ammeter, Timer, Gauss Meter, White/Black Light Meter. Radiographic Testing (RT): Density Film Strip.

Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT): Pressure Gages, White/Black Light Meter, Temperature Gages. Visual: White Light Meter . Leak Test, Pressure Drop: Pressure Gage. Leak Test, Gas Detection , Gas Concentration, and Flow Rate: Sensing Units.

SCOPE DESCRIPTION:

Methods will be broken down in the following manner when being defined on the Nondestructive Scope of Accreditation or an Inspection Body scope that contains Nondestructive methods. Penetrant: Visible Fluorescent Radiography: Xray (Digital and/or Film) Gamma (Digital and/or Film) Magnetic Particle: Prod – Visible and/or Flourescent (Wet and/or Dry) Yoke – Visible and/or Flourescent (Wet and/or Dry) Bench (Visible and/or Flourescent ) Ultrasonic: Contact Straight Beam Contact Angled Beam Immersion Straight Beam Immersion Angled Beam Immersion Phased Array Leak: Pressure Drop Gas Detection Gas Concentration Flow Rate Methods will be required to be broken down into the most descriptive definition possible to support the actual testing/inspection being performed by the laboratory/inspection body or in the field. Sections, articles, and/or paragraphs will be used when appropriate. (i.e. ASME Section V, Article 6 or Section VIII, B31.1; AWS D1.1, Structural Welding Code – Steel (Clause 6, Inspection); AISC/RCSC, AISC 360 Specification for Structural Steel Buildings (Chapter N, QA/QC Fab & Erection), Specification for Structural Joints Using High-Strength Bolts (Section 9, Inspection))
