They added itbecause of top phone requests offthe album. We have all ofHouston, KILT and KNUS and allothers in surrounding areas. Wealso have all rockers in Dallas.

Album wise we have goodimmediate action on the newSavoy Brown, which is a wholenew band and getting goodreception from KMET and allacross the country.

near everywhibre. Selling like asun of a gun with great immediatechart reaction. Album certifiedgold in a hurry (as with everyalbum they ever had) cut that isstill causing alot of talk (andairplay) is "Wishing You WereHere" with the Beach Boybackup. Of the new things, something that will be welcomedby every programmer and lovedby his listeners is "The GoldenAge Of Rock & Roll" by Mott TheHoople (conveniently locatedwithin their new album "TheHoople"). With everyonemoaning about all the downrecords and the lack of good oldrock & roll boogie, this should be awell received tonic. As should anew offering from Johnny Wintera rather romping, stomping, kicking, biting version of LarryWilliams classic "BonyMoroney." Some significant addsbefore we talked, before you wentto press and long before anyonewill read this ... On Billy Joel'sclassic "Piano Man". The addsincluded WABC-New York,KXOK-St. Louis, and WP IX -NewOrleans. (It might be noted thatthe version that causedImmediate phone reaction andsales is the 41/2 minute versionwith the extra lyric lines andmusical hooks .. . but theneveryone in the world willprobably be playing It by the endof this week).

Still going crazy over thereluctance on the part of somefolks to play "Would You LayWith Me" by the lovely TanyaTucker. Record went to number 2at one of the nations bestbaramoters, WAKY-Louisville(Thank you John) and It's nowmid -teens at Killer KLIF-Dallas,it has long since past twice what acountry record normally sells, therefore one wouldpresume ...

FM ROCKRADIO

by Mike Harrison(Continued from last week)

Continuing on the premise that radiostations are responsible to serve thesponsors as well as the listeners, (if youdisagree, please write and let meknow), we come to that FM oriented -

phenomenon known as the commercialcluster. In order to have the time tosegue records and create sets, commercials are segued in sets too.

What effect does a position in such aseries have upon the potency of anyindividual commercial, and how can aknowledge of this help a programmer?Next week we'll explore this by talkingto radio people as well as advertisingpeople.

In the meantime, try an experiment.Produce two four -minute demo tapes. They should consist of the last minuteof a familiar record, DJ outro, DJname, time, and station call letters;two 60 -second agency spots back toback, DJ intro and the first minute of afamiliar record. Both tapes should beexactly the same, except for the orderof the commercials. Then take a groupof five people and without telling themwhat you're up to, ask them to listen tothe first tape. After its over, wait threeminutes and then have them writedown (in the order that it comes tothem) everything that they rememberabout the tape. Mark that group one. Then gather another group of fivepeople and repeat the process, only thistime using the second tape. Comparegroup one and group two.

Let me know how you make out.

A listener calls the radio station. The.troubled voice of a male approximately20 years old asks, "Can you clear up aproblem for me? I bought a pair oftickets to the Jefferson Starshipconcert at the Civic Theatre for April16th and I want to know if they're fakeor anything."

"What makes you think they'refake?"

"I haven't heard anything about theconcert at all, no advertisements."

"How did you know about theconcert, then?"

"I saw it listed on the Civic Theatres'calendar of upcoming events."

"Well, don't worry, your tickets arevery real. The radio ads for the concertstart running tomorrow."

"Whew! Thank, I couldn't believethat I could be the only one in town whoknew about it."

This conversation actually took placejust a few days ago. It is a perfectexample of how a consumer can doubtthe credibility of a product because it isnot advertised. Taken one step further,it indicates how the listener can doubtthe credibility of a radio station for notadvertising a significant contemporaryproduct such as a big concert.

What we've got here is the super hipcommercial that walks a thin linebetween being an advertisement andnews. These include spots for concerts, records, movies, and most other formsof entertainment and amusement. Todraw a parallel, you'll find innewspapers the ads for movies in bigprint that the theatres pay for on onepage, and on another page, in not so bigprint, the directory and schedules ofevery movie in town that the paperprints for free. How about during theworst days of the gas shortage, thoseradio stations that were broadcastingthe names and locations of gas stationsthat were pumping gas. Those were inreality free commercial messages thatthe stations chose to broadcast becausethey would actually boost ratings. Who

Programme Shoppe :

Automated CountryAutomated programming is

certainly nothing new. Backgroundmusic and jockless radio has beenaround for years. What's new, is theincreased popularity of automation asa money -saving form of programmingat a time when the economy, and radiostations in particular, are goingthrough rough times. Jim Hamptonand Chris Lane formed theProgramme Shoppe last Oct. whentheir original parent company,Programming db, went under.

The Programme Shoppe opened upas a wing of Alto Communications, theparent company, that has beenfurnishing automated programmingfor airlines and radio outlets amongthem, RKO's FM operations. Under theagreement, Alto does the Shoppe'sduplicating, sales and marketing out oftheir combined Hollywood facilities.

While Hampton and Lane areservicing stations with formatsranging from Olde Golde (nostalgiaformat) to Something to Love (amodified "good music" format withfeatures) to automated rock (they'llunveil this format at the upcomingNAB), it's "Big Country" that'sreceiving the big push.

BIG COUNTRYBoth the economic feasibility of

syndicating an automated voice -tracked, Country format and their faithin the growth of the Country market, have convinced them Big Country isthe wave of the future.

According to Hampton, "Countrymusic is at the point now that rock wasat about ten years ago; its appeal to themasses, the way the personalities inthe music are revered, the degree ofaudience involvement."'

"And, your Country audience is your18-34 demographic group, too, "Laneadds, "which is what makes themarket so successful, advertising -wise. And it's an audience that'sgrowing younger all the time."

MARKETSEight markets are currently running

Big Country (WB KR -Owensboro,Kentucky, CHYM-Kitchener, Toronto,WBGW-Bangor, Maine, WOLD-Marion, Virginia, WBCS-FM-Milwaukee, KBCM-Sioux City, andWIOV-Ephrata, Pennsylvania. Andthey've just signed up XPRS-San Diego(Rosarita, B.C. Mexico).

As Hampton explains it, the idea is"to upgrade the small markets, so thatevery station has the same chance tocompete as the bigger markets. I'm notadvocating that every station go toautomation, but the costs involvedmake it tough for everyone to be live.

"The station out there in Wichitacouldn't afford to hire, individually, thepersonalities we offer -- like ChrisLane, or Hugh Cherry. We're saying tothem, 'well give you the entire radiostation. Not only a library of a couplethousand records, but constantupdating of the music, around -the -clock personalities, and you won't beable to tell that it's not live. Plus, weoffer the jingles, features, promotionsas part of the package.'

"When it's done, we've put together afranchise format, like a McDonald's.Ultimately, I'd like to see us in theposition of saying, 'hey, yourhamburgers are six ounces too large, and that's not the agreement we had.We won't allow you to do it that way.'

"We'd be saying it not so much out of

Country

Chris Lane, co=founder of theProgramme Shoppe.

arrogance, but out of the fact that wehave as much pride in their success asthey do. We want to be able to say,'They're running Big Country;therefore, any time you turn on thestation you can hear Big Country."'

ALL OR NOTHINGBecause Big Country has an identity

or profile to maintain, just like 'acompetitive rock station, Big Countrysubscribers have to take the entirepackage.

Chris Lane points to the recentgrowth in the Country audience anddefines it as being altogether differentfrom the larger Pop audience.

"With Country today, you've got boththe traditional, old-line fans and thegrowing number of younger people. Our endeavor with Big Country is tobring both portions of the audiencetogether.

COUNTRY AUDIENCE

"I do not believe the Countryaudience will stand still and be fed thesame thing over and over like theheavy rotation, tight playlist situationthat rock audiences accept.

"There's that rich tradition ofCountry Music as being a whole thing, that should be presented intact. Say, ifsomebody has just found Charlie Richfor the first time with "Most BeautifulGirl,' they're obviously going to want tohear his earlier works. The same withRay Price, Merle Haggard. The peoplewho've always been part of the Country

audience love to hear the artist'searlier things because they rememberthem, and it's something fresh and newthat somebody else has just found.

"If you look back in history, whenever the country's been in trouble, there's been a tremendous resurgenceof Country. The country is in troublenow and it's looking back at its heritagefor something it can build on. Two ofthe most popular musics today areCountry and Black, and I think it'sbecause both musics have a lot of truthto them.

"It's like Kristoffersen said,Country music is the white man's soul. It's real. Everybody can relate to a"Help Me Make It Through the Night.'You can be in New York or Oklahomaand be lonely and relate to that song. That's what Country's about, truth. That's why it's only begun to tap thepotential audience it has."

INSIDE NASHVILLEby Biff

Hank Snow the "comeback artist ofthe year?" His "Hello Love" is boundfor the promised land, that's for sure!Betty Jean Robinson seems to bematuring as a top writer. Four Star'sBob Jennings has interestingneighbors. He learned after living nextdoor to the Robinsons for four years, that she wrote songs (who doesn't) fora hobby. Four Star bossman JoeJohnson knows how to pick 'em.Besides, Bob's the leading golfer (in hisfamily) ....

The two additionally confirmed newboard members of NashvilleSongwriters' Association (mentionedhere last week) are: Mary ReevesDavis and songwriter -performer BillAnderson. Also, per requests, songwriters who are interested inbecoming members -- annual dues are$10.00 to: Maggie Cavendar, ExecutiveDirector, Nashville SongwritersAssociation, 811 18th Avenue South,Nashville, Tennessee 37203.

Roy Clark's hosting of the TonightShow last week was sensational, anddoubtless will lead to more of that kindof thing for him. Even Bob Hope wasimpressed! ... Roy, Glen Campbell,Charlie McCoy and Anne Murrayentertained the golfers at theGreensboro open, and scored high (andthat's good!) .. . Ditto Roy's hosting ofthe Midnight Special, with guestsConway Twitty, Mel Tiflis, DianaTrask, Tom T., Lynn Anderson,Tommy Overstreet and Charlie Mc Coywas perhaps the best of the countryshows, which have been really great(thank you Marty!).

That painting Thomas Hart Benton, the elder statesman of American artwill do for the Country Music Hall ofFame -will exceed $20,000 in costs, shared by the Country MusicFoundation and the Tennessee ArtsCommission. Mr. Benton says heshould be finished with it in the fall ofthis year. He's 84! Joe Allison was adriving force for years in the project toget this done. It's interesting that, sinceJoe Allison left Capitol, two of hisrecord acts, Connie Cato (he producedher hit record of "Superskirt"), andRed Stegall (he produced his hit "IGave Up Good Mornin'") have comeon strong, thanks to Joe's studio style.Joe also turned Roy Clark's first hits, both on Capitol and then on Dot, plus astring of Hank Thompson hits. Joe hasjust this week moved into the newoffices of his Allison Productions, Inc.and joint publishing firm with hispartner record industry veteran PaulWyatt. In case old friends want to makecontact, their new office number is(616) 242-5636.

The Governor reap in the paperabout the Smiths selling their 500 acreranch and home in Williamson Countryand he and the Mrs. stopped by to seethem before they moved. It's really ashowplace, and Carl and Goldieplanned it, built it, worked itthemselves ... the new price tag is amillion and a half ... Ronnie Ressionsand Patti Tierney (who've got theirfirst duet resease currently) willestablish another precedent this weekwhen they perform at the tennis classicOrlando. Pretty good racquet to getinto, Ronnie!

More movies planned for Nashvilleand vicinity. The producers of"Walkin' Tall" are coming back formore, with Billy Don Baker ("Walkin'

Tall" star) to headline this one called"Framed". Some of the story will beshot (pardon me, filmed) at theTennessee State Prison in Nashville.Sometime this summer.

When you see "Sugarland Express"(with "Last Picture Show" star BenJohnson and Goldie Hawn), listen forWebb Pierce's songs throughout thepicture ... Donna Fargo and husbandStan Silver's new $160,000 motor homemakes it possible for her to live like aqueen on the road, even though successmeans never being home. Bedrooms,Stateroom, Lounge, office, telephones, radio & TV ... Well, at least it's a roofover their heads!

One thing that's not being nominatedfor awards in Nashville is the weatherwe've been having. Tornadoes neverwere comparable to No. 1 hit records, that's for sure!

"W.W. & The Dixie Dancekings"female star Connie Van Dyke got overher viral pneumonia and is workingagain. Great critical comments fromthe crew of the movie regardingConnie's professional acting work onthis, her first movie ... Burt likes hertoo!

Those Five Hundred and Thirtyentertainment and business people whopaid $25 a plate to tell Red O'Donnell, columnist and No. 1 father -confessor ofthe country community how much theylove him had at least as much fun asRed himself, and he couldn't have beenhappier. What a great guy! Among thegifts he received was a 1974 MercuryBrougham Automobile complete withhis own personalized plates. Asmistress of ceremonies, Brenda Leewas reading "his requests" telegramwhen Burt Reynolds walked on topersonally present Red's wife Ebbywith a bouquet of roses.

Don't mess with Ray Griff! He justreceived his Green belt in karate!(They were out of Black ones)

Would you believe Lois Johnson's carwas stolen from Buddy Lee's parkinglot? And would you believe five dayslater, she walked on the lot and therewas her car, complete with allinstruments, her purse (with money),gas in the gas tank and the car hadbeen washed and waxed! andwould you believe that on the front seatwas a note which read:..."Thanks ... I

Needed That!"

FM ROCKRADIO

(Continued from page 8)spite of thefact that it will be providinga tremendous public service, filling adefinite cultural need and makingmusic history, it is a commercialventure. None the less it is receiving atremendous amount of media exposurein the form of news and some stationshave gone so far as to become the"official" American SongwritingFestival station in their respectivemarkets without benefit of financialrenumeration. They know what they'redoing and will probably benefit from it,absorbing rubbed off prestige.

The effects of commercials uponprogramming and their influence uponits ultimate success or failure run thegamut and can not be taken lightly orgeneralized.

AUDIENCE APPEAL GRAPHS

SIMPLY PUT: The levels 101; to 1 00' represent a record's increa-sing or decreasing popularity with the "general mass audience" forthe format being graphed.

A RECORD reaching 90=1,00',-: is a total, across the demographicboard smash. A record registering .50`,% may do so because it'sappealing to only a portion of the audience-say. teens, or mostlymales. The graphs will also show how a record may "hold on"in audience popularity long after sales have dropped.

parents by controlling thelistening pattern of the offspring.Using certain elements thatexploit characteristics of thesepatterns, a station that appeals toteens and sub -teens can alsoappeal to their parents, moreeasily the mother than the father.

By the time the average motherhas reached 35, her interest in andknowledge of music is quitediminished. This mother willoften listen to a station for thesimple reason that her childenjoys the music the stationplays. The mother's musicpreference is contingent upon themusic preferences of her child. She enjoys the music her childenjoys. From a sociologicalperspective, it all gets back to thechild as being the center of theAmerican mother's life. The childis the mother's purpose in life.

A FAMILY RADIO STATION?A "good clean fun" sounding

contemporary station that doesnot sound as if it condonessocially deviant behavior can be atrue family station. The stationcan attract the whole family, thushaving a good 12-49 spread. However, the parents do not seemto share the child's listening to aprogressive station. This can beattributed to the approach of aprogressive station. To theparent, the progressive stationrepresents the "bad influences"of society. To the parent, it's a"Hippie Station." This is whyquite often progressive stationsdo well 12-24, sometimes 12-34, butdo extremelypoorly 25+ or 35+,as opposed to contemporarystations which can do well 12-49.This concept can be visualized ina diagram.

COMTEMPORARY STATION12-17 18-24 25-34 35-49

PROGRESSIVE STATION

This tie betweenage groups is broken

These patterns of listening infamily units have implications for

the day -parting of music. Is itbeneficial to play "adult music"in "adult time slots"? Or is itmore beneficial, in terms ofattracting adults, to play teenappeal music in these "adult timeslots"? Does programming toadults on a contemporary stationactually lose adults? The parentwith a teenage or subteen childcan often be best attracted byplaying music that is popular withthe child.

RESEARCHING RESEARCHThis listening pattern research

also has implications for musicresearch. For example, supposethat a station does call -out musicresearch. Besides the fact thatadults, more often than teens, cannot identify by name the songsthat they enjoy, often adults donot listen to a station that playstheir favorite songs. If a fortyyear old female is asked what areher three favorite songs, shemight name three Frank Sinatra,Johnny Mathis, or DionneWarwick songs, or maybe somesongs from the fifties. If theinterview ends here, theresearcher might conclude thatthis person would be attracted toa station that plays these songs. However, if the interview wentinto a bit of listening patternresearch, it might be discoveredthat this interviewee listens tostations that play music that theoffspring in the family enjoys. It'sa matter of making the interviewthorough.

The entirety of this discussionhas only been the surface of theconcept of listening patterns infamily units. There are manyother variables that need to beexplained, such as thepercentages of ties betweenparent and child, the distributionof these ties in different socio-economic level families, distribution in different sizefamilies, etc. The effects ofexternal variables also needs tobe determined. Although this issomewhat time consuming, I

sincerely believe that this wholearea of listening patternsdefinitely warrants the time andeffort of the research orientedprogrammer. The reward forsuch research is an increase inratings and an increase in 12-49spread.

POP/MORNOTESby Mike ct-Kasabo

(Music Director, KIIS/Los Angeles)

So far I've counted twelve different"streaking" records...and apparentlysome more on the way. Biit, it seemsthat Ray Stevens will run away withthe lion's share of airplay with hisBarnaby release "The Streak."

Several stations not playing it haveasked me this week If it's just a bigairplay item and nothing more. Well, I

can state that without exception thatphones light up and the caller wants toknow where he can purchase therecord. By nature, novelties don't lasttoo long, so if you have a mind to playit, now would be the time.

Other records that appear to bepicking up nicely are:"Touch A Hand,"Staple Singers ... add KVI-Seattle.Standing At The End Of The Line,Lobo on WCBM-Baltimore, WMAL-Washington. "You Won't See Me,"Anne Murray just getting out to thestations and on WTAE-Pittsburg,KMPC-Los Angeles, WLW-Cincinnati,WCBM-Baltimore, WBAL-Baltimore."My Girl Bill," Jim Stafford keepshappening ... hot at WEE I -FM -Boston new at KNBR-San Francisco,KHOW-Denver, WBAL-Baltimore,KRNT Des Moines "Sundown,"Gordon Lightfoot WLW-Cincinnati,WTAE-Pittsburg, WMAL-Washington,KHOW-Denver. "Forever Young,"Joan Baez...seeing more airplaythan she's had in a while add WMAL-Washington, WLW-Cincinnati, KV !-Seattle. "I Only Have Eyes For You,"Mel Carter charts No. 30 at WSM-Nashville ... on WRIE-Erie, WCBM-Baltimore, KRNT-Des Moines.

La Verne Drake, music lady atKNBR-San Francisco reports playing"Haven't Got Time For The Pain"from the Carly Simon album ...shealso mentioned that the cut would beCarly's new single.

AUDIENCE APPEAL GRAPHS

SIMPLY PUT: The levels (0% to 100%) represent a record's increa-sing or decreasing popularity with the "general mass audience" forthe format being graphed.

A RECORD reaching 90-100% is a total, across the demographicboard smash. A record registering 50% may do so because it'sappealing to only a portion of the audience-say, teens, 6r mostlymales. The graphs will also show how a record may "hold on"in audience popularity long> after sales have dropped.
