Upcoming Programs & Events

Dear Rotarians,

September is New Generations month in Rotary.

Randolph Rotary is dedicated to nurturing the next generation of Rotarians. We support local youth through our Interact clubs, Youth Exchange, and the Rotary Youth Leadership Program. We also advocate childhood literacy as we take dictionaries to 5th graders and donate books to the Randolph County Partnership for Children. Investing in our youth brings one of the greatest rewards we can experience as Rotarians.

As we support the youth in our community, we are shaping future leaders and ensuring our club’s future.

Yours in Rotary Service, Diane Winnemuller

In the March issue of The Rotarian, Diana Schoenberg wrote about a grassroots effort to establish neighborhood lending libraries. The editors of Reader’s Digest ranked the libraries as No. 11 on the list of the “50 Surprising Reasons We Love America.”

The lending libraries beat out Bill Gates at No. 25 and Bruce Springsteen and Jon Bon Jovi at No. 50. Today, there are more than 16,000 lending libraries in 55 countries. The Little Free Library phenomenon was started by Rotarian Todd Bol.

Randolph Rotary continues to build libraries in our community one book at time. Each week, we donate a book to Randolph County Partnership for Children. We also put dictionaries into the hands of third graders each year.

One of our goals for the upcoming year is to reach more children in Randolph County through our literacy efforts. With that idea in mind, we would like to provide 5th graders a book entitled Your Greatest Power. This book has inspired many people to consider their power of choice. If we can inspire rising middle school students to explore their options, we will create a legacy in our community and hopefully a book that children and parents alike will want to share.

To learn more about little lending libraries, visit www.littlefreelibrary.org. Share your thoughts with fellow members next Wednesday.

Tom Clynes recently shared with The Rotarian magazine the story of Kenneth Wilson, a fourth-generation Rotarian, and his son Taylor. At age eight, Taylor dreamed of becoming an astronaut, but he didn’t just want to ride in a rocket – he wanted to build one, too. He set up a chemistry lab in their garage and began designing his rockets and making his own fuel. By age 14, Taylor was the youngest individual to achieve nuclear fusion.

Instead of forbidding Taylor’s unusual and dangerous hobby, Wilson looked for people who could guide his son and check on his safety practices as Taylor’s collection of radioactive materials grew. “When I needed something for my experiments, or needed to know who we could call for access or expertise, it seems my dad would always have Rotary connections to help,” Taylor explained. He and his younger brother loved going to meetings and events at the Rotary Club of Nashville with their father. “Rotary was a big part of our family,” Taylor says. “What I remember most is that there were always a lot of interesting

people. And they were always interested in what I was doing too. No one was dismissive of kids. They were all happy to see us.”

Through the years, Rotary has been an amazing support system for Wilson as he has raised his son, from providing mentors to helping Taylor become a confident, polished public speaker. Taylor, who already has given three TED talks,

got his start presenting as a preteen, when the Nashville club invited him to give an address on radioactivity. As the project progressed, Taylor again talked to the Rotary club, this time about his reactor and nuclear fusion. Over the next four years, Taylor took home more than $100,000 in prizes and over a dozen Intel science fair awards, including an Intel Foundation award for his fusion-based applications for medical isotopes and systems to detect nuclear materials in shipping containers. Taylor’s TED Talks have been viewed millions of times.

In 2012, he accepted a $100,000 Thiel Fellowship, awarded to 20 people under age 20, to help them pursue their innovative ideas. Taylor’s goal is to produce and market his nuclear reactor along with other inventions. Taylor envisions a tabletop system that will save lives through early diagnosis and treatment of cancer.

Now that Taylor is 20, his approach to science is changing, Wilson says. He has begun mentoring younger students and volunteering, often to further the cause of science education. “Volunteering has always been a big part of our family’s life, and Rotary has instilled in Taylor a commitment to helping people,” Wilson reflects.

FOUNDATION BANQUET SAVE THE DATE - NOVEMBER 6

Rotary International President Nominee, John Germ, is the featured speaker for the annual Rotary District 7690 Foundation Banquet on November 6, 2014. Due to the anticipated attendance, the event will be held at the Koury Convention Center.

There will be a reception from 6:00 to 7:00pm so that all may meet and greet the honored guest. Dinner will follow from 7:00 to 9:00pm.

If our club has 15% of members attend the event, we will meet this year’s Gold Club criterion. Given the outstanding speaker and the celebration that will take place that evening, it should be a wonderful opportunity for fun and fellowship.
