Dear Rotarians,
In November, we are reminded of the importance of the Rotary Foundation. Through the foundation, Rotarians make a difference with charitable projects around the world. The mission of the Rotary Foundation is to enable Rotarians to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through the improvement of health, the support of education, and the alleviation of poverty.
During October, we supported our Interact clubs as they worked to increase awareness and raise funds to eradicate polio. We also packaged meals to feed children around the world. In November, we will deliver dictionaries to third grade classrooms across Randolph County. I am thankful for the members of our club and the difference we make locally and abroad. Yours in Rotary Service, Diane Winnemuller

Students at a Sri Lanka school built through the Schools Re-Awaken project sponsored by The Rotary Foundation.
In the March issue of The Rotarian, Diana Schoenberg wrote about a grassroots effort to establish neighborhood lending libraries. The editors of Reader’s Digest ranked the libraries as No. 11 on the list of the “50 Surprising Reasons We Love America.”
The lending libraries beat out Bill Gates at No. 25 and Bruce Springsteen and Jon Bon Jovi at No. 50. Today, there are more than 16,000 lending libraries in 55 countries. The Little Free Library phenomenon was started by Rotarian Todd Bol.
Randolph Rotary continues to build libraries in our community one book at time. Each week, we donate a book to Randolph County Partnership for Children. We also put dictionaries into the hands of third graders each year.
One of our goals for the upcoming year is to reach more children in Randolph County through our literacy efforts. With that idea in mind, we would like to provide 5th graders a book entitled Your Greatest Power. This book has inspired many people to consider their power of choice. If we can inspire rising middle school students to explore their options, we will create a legacy in our community and hopefully a book that children and parents alike will want to share.

Many educators believe that third grade is a pivotal time in a child’s development as they transition from learning to read to reading to learn. Providing dictionaries can help young students become resourceful learners and encourage reading and writing skills. 2,344,291 third grade students received dictionaries worldwide last year through the Dictionary Project.
This year, we will provide dictionaries to students at the following schools:
Southmont Tabernacle Farmer Level Cross New Market
There is no particular deadline, so it is up to you and the school to determine the best time to deliver. Please contact Ralph Hardison at [email protected] or 953-7294 to volunteer. Help reinforce literacy in our community!
THE DICTIONARY PROJECT
Thanks for helping make Stop Hunger Now a huge success! Sixty-four volunteers packaged over 20,000 meals in under four hours! We had folks from the Troy, Asheboro, Randolph, and our Interact clubs. Retired Randolph Rotarian, Maggie Stephens, volunteered as well – she said “hello!” and that she misses everyone.

The Southwest Randolph High School and Uwharrie Charter Academy Interact Clubs did an excellent job increasing awareness and raising money for the eradication of polio. Special thanks to Rotarian, Marlo Francis, for donating a percentage of Di’lishi proceeds to the cause.
Thank you for supporting our Interact clubs!
WORLD POLIO DAY
Dr. Mickey Dhatt, Cranford Knott, Harold Holmes, and Diane Winnemuller played in the 8th annual Ray Taylor District Golf Tournament.
Dr. Dhatt’s shot is two inches short of a hole-in-one. Nice putt for birdie!

Members of the Asheboro, Liberty, Midstate, Randolph, and Troy clubs attended the Family of Rotary event on October 29th. Keynote speaker, Neal Griffin, shared the personal impact our Rotary family made in his life when he faced a life-threatening illness. Rhonda Trollinger did an amazing job organizing the event. Thank you, Rhonda!
