SETUPMake sure each separate deck of cards is well shuffled, then bring out the Level1 Loot and Level 1 Encounter decks. The remaining decks can be set off to theside for now. Shuffle the Bosses and draw a Level 1 Boss. Set it aside for now.

Each Player Begins with the Following:• 1 Character Card• 1 Clear Health Gem (place this on the lowest number with a Heart Icon)• 1 Star token• 1 Level 1 Loot card

You are all on the same team (known as the Party), so feel free to show, share, and Equip your Loot (see page X for Loot). If you have Loot that matches yourCharacter's Equipment slot, then Equip it by placing it on that slot.

BASICSEach Player rolls a single die and whoever rolls highest (with a Star being the highest) is the first Leader. Your party is now ready to enter the Forest! You will be using the Level 1 Loot and Level 1 Encounter decks for now.

BASIC GAME FLOW1. The Leader draws an Encounter card.2. Party challenges the Encounter. If successful, the Leader gets a Loot.3. Party can Use, Trade, or Equip Loot.4. Player on the left becomes the next Leader.5. Repeat these steps until each Player has 2 Encounter cards.6. Fight a Boss. Once it is defeated then:7. The Party Levels up and gets to sell Loot (page 19).8. Begin the next Level and repeat!

Once you beat all 3 Levels you win! If the entire Party is KO'd – you lose!7

CHARACTERSHEALTHBAR AND HEALTH POINTSCharacters have a Healthbar on the left side of the card. Place a Health Gem onthe single Heart icon. This number is a Character's Maximum Health Points. Character's cannot heal past this number (without leveling up, but more on that later). Being hit by Monsters or failing Traps can reduce your Health Points. If you run out of Health Points and reach KO, then you are Knocked Out and unable to do anything for the rest of the Encounter. If all Players are KO'd during an Encounter, then the game is over!

BATTLE ABILITYThese are used during battles with Monsters and Bosses. If a Player rolls a Star while Attacking, or uses a Star Token while Attacking, then their Battle Ability activates. You can choose to ignore your Battle Ability and simply re-roll the die to try Attacking again.

LEADER ABILITYCharacters have Leader Abilities that are active when you are the Party Leader. These Abilities can help the Party get past traps, navigate through the Levels, or even grant the Party a boost in Skill. Take note as to when the Ability can beused, such as before an Encounter card is drawn . Using these Abilities is the key to a successful adventure!

EQUIPMENT SLOTSCharacters can Equip 3 Loot cards, but only ones with matching color and symbol . More on these in the Loot section (page 12).

SKILLSEach Character has Strength (red), Dexterity (green), and Magic (blue). These will increase by finding Loot and growing stronger after completing Levels.

LOOTThe loot in Random Encounters will help you on your journey.1.) Equipment:

a.) Weapon – Orange with a sword icon. Slice and smash!b.) Armor – Light Blue with a helmet icon. Protective outfits.c.) Trinket – Purple with a ring icon. Powerful accessories.d.) Familiar – Gray with a cat icon. Unique pets with abilities.

2.) Item – Green background with a bag icon. One-time use, then discard.3.) Enchantment – Yellow background with a diamond icon. Attach to any

equipped Loot for bonuses against certain Monster Types.

1.) EQUIPMENTWeapons, Armor, Trinkets, and Familiars may be Equipped by a Character between Encounters. Simply place the Loot card on the icon-matching Character card slot so that the Skills line up. Whenever that Character makes adie roll that involves a Skill, they include any bonuses the Equipment provides.

Once Equipped, Kafula's skills are: Strength=3, Dexterity=4, and Magic=7.11

Page 13: RANDOM ENCOUNTERS RULE BOOK - - Regular People Gaming · Encounters 13-18 Battle Notes 20 Quick Rules for Fools Back Page COMPONENT LIST • 4 Dice (with a 'Star' icon instead of

2.) ITEMSItems are Loot cards with a green background and a bag icon. During Battle, a Player may use an item on their turn in Battle. Outside of Battle, Items may be used at any time. Item cards (unlike Equipment cards) can be traded freely at any time. Think of them as being in a communal backpack, so share items withone another during Battle. You can even use your Items on another Player during Battle.Items can be used once, then they are discarded in a pile next to the Loot deck they came from.

3.) ENCHANTMENTS Enchantments are rare Loot cards that power up any of your Equipment cards (including Familiars)! Simply place the Enchantment cards so that the artwork rests underneath the Equipment card. Once attached, the Enchantment cannotbe removed. When sold, the Enchantment retains itsvalue when attached. A piece of Equipment can onlyhave one Enchantment attached to it at a time.

Note: MULTICOLORED CARDSSome Equipment, like the Wooden Shield, will have 2colors and icons and can be equipped in different slots. That card acts as whatever slot it is equipped to. So if the Jelly Cubeforces players to flip over their Weapon cards, theWooden Shield would not be affected if it is Equippedin an Armor slot. You get all of a multicolored card'sbonuses, no matter what slot it is Equipped in.

Loot value can be determined by the coin in the lower right hand corner: Copper: Silver: Gold:

12

Page 14: RANDOM ENCOUNTERS RULE BOOK - - Regular People Gaming · Encounters 13-18 Battle Notes 20 Quick Rules for Fools Back Page COMPONENT LIST • 4 Dice (with a 'Star' icon instead of

ENCOUNTERSThese are the types of Encounters that you may face on your journey:

1. Monsters: Fight these mean creatures together.2. Traps: Roll dice and try to beat a certain number, or suffer!3. Events: Special rules and situations follow these cards.4. Bosses: The final confrontation in a level...

1.) MONSTERSMonsters have Skills just like the Characters. When a Monster is drawn, place a Health Gem on the Monster Health Card on the number printed on the Monster cards Heart icon multiplied by the number of players (as noted by the “X”). For example, the Wolf has 4X Health. So if there are 2 people playing, then the Wolf starts with 8 Health points. Use the Monster Health Card and place a Health Gem on the number 8.

The Leader gets to Attack first, followed by the other Players in a clockwise circle. They choose one of their 3 Skills (Strength, Dexterity, or Magic), add up any bonuses they get from their Character and Equipped Loot, and roll a singledie. The total of these 3 numbers is their Total Attack.

For example, Golias has a Strength of 5 and has the Short Sword Equipped, which has 1 Strength. So he effectively has a Strength of 6. He wants to attack the Wolf, so he rolls a die with a result of 4. His Total Attack would be 5 + 1 + 4 = 10.

Golias subtracts the Wolf 's Strength of 2, and the difference remaining is the damage dealt. 10 - 2 = 8. Which means that Golias deals 8 points of damage to the Wolf which is just enough to defeat the wolf. Good job!

13

MONSTER CARD

A.) Monster Name, Level, and LocationB.) Health – Its starting health points. Multiply by the number of players.C.) Portrait– The Monster artwork.D.) Battle Ability – Activates as soon as the first Player Attacks,.E.) Skills – Monsters have skills just like Players.F.) Attack Skill – The gold ring shows what the Monster Attacks with.G.) Monster Type – Look here when using Enchantments to see if extra

damage will be dealt.

14

Page 16: RANDOM ENCOUNTERS RULE BOOK - - Regular People Gaming · Encounters 13-18 Battle Notes 20 Quick Rules for Fools Back Page COMPONENT LIST • 4 Dice (with a 'Star' icon instead of

So what would happen if Golias had not rolled a high enough Attack roll to defeat the Wolf? Let's look at an example.

When all Players have made their Attack and the Monster has not been defeated, then the Monster gets a chance to Attack. The Monster card will havea gold outline around one of its Skills. This is what the Monster will Attack with on its turn. It rolls one die and adds its own Attacking Skill against the entire Party. Example:

The Wolf has a Dexterity of 3. It rolls a die and gets a 1. The Wolf is making a Dexterity Attack of 4 against the Party. Each Player checks that number against their own Dexterity Skill. Golias only has 3 Dexterity, so he would take 1 damage and therefore moves his Health gem down 1 point.

Once the Monster is defeated, the Leader draws a Loot card.

MONSTER TYPES:Monsters have types, as listed in the bottom right corner. These are to determine if your Enchantment cards will deal extra damage to the Monsters. There are 10 types (from left to right):Beast, Bug, Dragon, Flying, Humanoid, Jelly, Material, Mystic, Plant, & Undead

NOTE: When a Monster rolls a Star, simply re-roll the die.

15

Page 17: RANDOM ENCOUNTERS RULE BOOK - - Regular People Gaming · Encounters 13-18 Battle Notes 20 Quick Rules for Fools Back Page COMPONENT LIST • 4 Dice (with a 'Star' icon instead of

2.) TRAPSTrap cards require members of the Party to roll their dice and try to meet the Skill show on the card. Rolling a 1 is an Automatic Failure, while rolling a Star is an automatic success. As long as one Player succeeds then a Loot card is drawn by the Leader after completion.

For example, the Exploding Mushrooms Trap has all Players (starting with the Leader) try to roll either a Strength or Magic of 7 or higher.

Gwyn has a Strength of 4 and rolls a3 for a total of 7. 4+3=7 Strength.Gwyn beats the Trap and is safe.

Kafula has a Magic of 5, and has theJeweled Bracelet equipped, which grants her a +1 to Magic. She rolls a1. Her total is 5+1+1= 7.

She should be safe, but because she rolled a 1 on her die roll, it is an automatic failure. She suffers 5 damage from the Exploding Mushrooms as the card states.

Even though Kafula had a Total Magic of 7 (which is enough to beat the Trap), she still had to roll JUST in case she would roll a 1 and fail, which is exactly what happened!

Rolling a 1 is only a failure during TRAP card rolls, not during Battle or events(unless it has the word TRAP somewhere on the card).

16

Page 18: RANDOM ENCOUNTERS RULE BOOK - - Regular People Gaming · Encounters 13-18 Battle Notes 20 Quick Rules for Fools Back Page COMPONENT LIST • 4 Dice (with a 'Star' icon instead of

3.) EVENTSThere are several type of events, such as places to Rest, Sell Loot, get Ambushed by a Monster, or run into a Monster's Nest. Simply follow the instructions printed on the card.

The Party may skip some event cards if it says SKIPPABLE. Simply place the Event card at the bottom of the Encounter deck and draw another one in its place. The Leader of this round gets the final say on skipping an Event.

AMBUSHEDIf you are Ambushed, search the Encounter deck for a Monster card and put it into play (remember to shuffle the deck thoroughly afterward, replacing the Ambush card). The Monster gets to Attack first, then the Party gets their turn starting with the Leader. Certain Familiars and items can cancel Ambushes.

MONSTER NESTSearch the Encounter deck for 2 Monsters and put them into play at the same time. Players get to Attack first, but they must choose which Monster to Attack(but the Monsters still get to Attack the whole Party on their turn because they are jerks like that). Monster Nest counts as 2 Encounters, the first Monster defeated becomes the Encounter for the Leader who drew the Monster Nest card, while the remaining Monster becomes the next Leader's Encounter. If Monster Nest was drawn right before a boss battle, then enjoy your extra Loot (and battle)! Each Leader draws a Loot after the Encounter is over.

MERCHANTYou can only sell items once during a Merchant event or between Levels. All cards that are going to be sold must be placed into a pile, and then sold in one big chunk. Then Players draw the new Loot. Once a Loot is drawn, you can't sell again during the same event (see page 12 for Loot value).

17

Page 19: RANDOM ENCOUNTERS RULE BOOK - - Regular People Gaming · Encounters 13-18 Battle Notes 20 Quick Rules for Fools Back Page COMPONENT LIST • 4 Dice (with a 'Star' icon instead of

4). BOSS BATTLEBoss battles are the final fight before defeating a level, and are a true test of your teamwork.

Once each Player has defeated 2 Encounters (aka been Leader twice), then the battle against that Level's Boss begins! The Player who is the next Leader in line gets to be the Leader for the first round of the Boss Battle. After each Player gets their turn and the Boss Attacks, the Player to the left becomes the next Leader and so on in a circle.

Bosses are fought the same way a Monster is fought, but Item cards that can discard a Monster of a certain type do not work on Bosses.

Bosses have two Abilities. The top one is activated the moment the moment the Battle begins, while the lower Ability is used when the Boss rolls a Star during its Attack against the Party. The Boss does not get to Attack after rollinga Star (unless stated otherwise on the card).

After defeating the Boss, claim your rewards and move on to the next Level!

BATTLE NOTESWhen in Battle, you can do one of the following on your turn:

ATTACK – choose a Skill to Attack with. Roll a die and add your bonuses.

BATTLE ABILITY – Activates when you use a Star token or roll a Star while Attacking.

USE ITEM – You may use 1 Item on your turn. This includes drinking a potion or attaching an Enchantment to your Equipped Loot. Yes, you use an item on another Player! So feed someone else a Potion or a Robust Cheese Wheel at will!

You CANNOT use items during a Monsters turn – except Jace's Parrying Glove or the Escape Rope during a Bosses Ability that says 'Trap'!

You may not willingly skip your turn in Battle.

If you are KO'd in the game by getting your Health Points reduced to zero, you are not dead! You simply come back to life with 1 Health Point after this Encounter is completed. You don't miss out on Leveling up or any other benefits either.

DROPPING IN AND OUT OF THE PARTYSometimes the friends we make on our journey must depart for their own pathand in Random Encounters that's totally OK! We might make some new friends along the way. If a Player has to leave early or if a new Player wants to join mid-game, use these rules to get them set up.

JOINING THE PARTYIf a Player joins a game that's already begun, they will begin with 1 Loot Card for each Level the Party has been entered. Have that Player sit to the right of this Level's FIRST Leader. In other words, look at how many Encounters have been defeated. Seat the new Player so that they will be last in the circle of Players. The new Player joins in on the same 'round' of Encounters as the rest of the group. So if each member of the Party had already led an Encounter, give the new Player a Encounter card to put face down by their Character.

Players will always get their new cards from the top of the Loot/Encounter decks. Players also enter the game with full Health and appropriate Skill tokens, but with only 1 Star token.

LEAVING THE PARTYIf a Player has to leave the halfway through the game, they leave with 1 Loot card per Level (they can't leave empty-handed!), but the rest of their Loot may be split up amongst the Party. If they completed any Encounters during the current Level, split those Encounters up amongst the Party as well. If this puts the Party up to their total needed for the level, then the Boss Battle begins!

Players can only drop in and out of the Party between Encounters.

21

COMMON QUIRKSSometimes things happen that need a little bit further explanation. If none of these answer your questions, then come up with something that just keeps the game going! It's better to keep things moving than to fuss over wording.

Tumble cannot run away from Ambushing Monsters or Monster Nest Monsters. This is because the Event card draws the Monster, not Tumble.

YES! You can use the Escape Rope to avoid ALL damage from an Attack or moment that uses the word TRAP.

Quick Rules for Fools!Getting Started:-Pick a Character-Get a Star token-Get a Level 1 Loot card-Place a clear Health Gem on the Character's Heart Icon with the lowest value.

Everyone is on the same team, so feel free to share and trade your Loot. If yourLoot card matches a color on your Character card, Equip it to power up!Green Item cards are one time uses, then they are discarded.

Attacking:Pick Strength (red) Dexterity (green) or Magic (blue) - try to choose the one with the greatest difference between yours and the Monster's; with yours beinghigher.Add that Skill number and any bonuses you get from Equipment. Roll a die.

Add all of these numbers together for your Total Attack. Subtract the Monster's same Skill and you deal that much damage to the Monster.

Battle Ability happens when you roll a STAR while Attacking.Leader Ability can usually be used outside of battles.Star Tokens turn any die roll you just made into a STAR. Great for activating your Battle Ability or for getting yourself out of a pinch during a Trap!

Dodge Traps by choosing one of the skills on the card (pick your best) and beating the number on the card. If it says 6 Strength, then you need a 6 OR HIGHER. Getting a 1= Automatic fail. Getting a Star = Automatic success!

Once Each Player has been leader for 2 Encounter cards, you fight the Boss!
