New Leadership Team Elected
Elsewhere in this bulletin, you will see the report of the SRC
Coordinator, Ms Edwards, on the election of the new Student
Leadership Team for 2014. They represent an outstanding group of
young men, as the Leadership Team always does.
I am especially looking forward to working with the new Captain,
Benjamin Street and Vice Captain, Tilan Mahayagoda, both of
whom are remarkable young men.
The new team has big shoes to fill and I look forward to hearing
something of their vision at the Leaders’ Induction Ceremony on
Thursday, September 05.
Showtime
Once again The Show was an absolute stand out
event. What a terrific experience! The effort of the
staff and parents, along with the exceptional work of
Alicia Jarvis as the creative director, never fails to
impress me. Ms Ford, who invests so much of her
time and energy in The Show, is a magnificent asset Alicia Jarvis
to our school and without her, our engagement in The Show would
be much harder to achieve. However, the cast and crew, for whom
The Show exists, were just amazing.
While everyone was great, I have to
mention the brilliant performance of Rob
Hartley – again the great comic with
fantastic timing and a face that lights up
the stage; Zac Goldfinch, whose acting
skills just get stronger and stronger - as
the father in the Willy Wonker story he
was marvellous! Ben Miziner - whose
rendition of Goldfinger in the James
Bond segment was just breath- taking - is
another talent to watch. However, the
new talent of the night was Kalani
Anitelea-Hand, a Year 8 dynamo with a great voice and versatility.
His smile showed how much he was enjoying himself and the
applause showed how talented he is! The Show is one of our
flagship events and deservedly so. I look forward eagerly to next
year’s production.
More about BYOD
Last week, I wrote about the policy of Bring your Own Device,
which will be implemented next year, to replace the finished laptop
roll out. I attended a conference last week that showcased some of
the emerging technologies in education. BYOD is one of the
programs being used in educational systems around the world to
enable students to have access to technology at school.
Shortly, we will be conducting a survey of parents to gauge their
interest in several aspects of the BYOD program, including
willingness to purchase or lease devices from third party providers
via the school. We are looking at what possible devices we may be
able to offer via third party providers at the lowest possible price for
purchase or lease.
For those interested in seeing
what’s on the horizon for the next
few years in terms of technology,
google “The Horizon Report” to
view a short film clip that shows
what’s coming our way. Successful Police Work Experience
Congratulations to Kirk Reynolds of Year 11 who recently undertook work experience with the NSW Police. Kirk was so impressive that I was contacted by the Police with their congratulations. Kirk appears in the photograph as part of his work experience at the Police air command.

STUDENT LEADERSHIP AT RBHS
To be a prefect of RBHS requires a students to commit to be
leaders in every sense of the word; to act as role-models, to be
approachable, to maintain the high standards of uniform we expect
of our students, to assist in improving engagement amongst the
student body for school events and to represent our school at many
public and departmental events. It is both a huge honour and a
fantastic achievement to be elected as a prefect.
The election of prefects and the subsequent selection of a new
Captain and Vice-captain required the eighteen nominees to stand
before their peers and speak publically about why they should be a
prefect from term 4 this year; a difficult task for many people, but
these boys rose to the occasion and all delivered speeches that I
was honoured to witness. Well done! The school community
should be rightly proud and very excited about the prospect of the
forthcoming year with this prefect group, a wonderfully diverse
group of young men.
The election of the School Captain and Vice-captain, as well as
nomination of the Prefect Portfolio positions, was conducted over
the past two weeks. Congratulations to Benjamin Street on being
elected as School Captain and to Tilan Mahayagoda on his election
as Vice-Captain. These two extremely talented young men both
have great futures ahead of them. I have no doubt that they will
represent our school admirably and wear the badge with both
honour and pride. Benjamin Street Tilan Mahayagoda School Captain Vice School Captain
To all the boys who nominated for the Student Representative
Council this year, well done for saying to the school community that
you are prepared to represent your peers and the school.
Unfortunately, not everyone can be elected and I encourage those
unsuccessful candidates to continue to be involved in the life of the
school and try again next year. To those boys who successfully
achieved selection on the SRC, congratulations. Let’s have a
fantastic 2014 making a difference at RBHS.
I can't finish this article without acknowledging our departing SRC
representatives, particularly our outgoing Prefect group. Led by
Adry Awan and Ali Attia, this team has set a very high standard,
leading with a sense of drive, pride, humility and passion for their
school. I will miss you all. You are all wonderful leaders and young
men. Your futures are definitely bright.
The Student Leadership Investiture Assembly will take place on
Thursday 5 September.

Educational Access Schemes (EAS)
Most of UAC’s participating institutions have Educational Access Schemes (EAS) to help students who have experienced long-term educational disadvantage gain admission to tertiary study. Institutions use EAS to make offers of admission in one of two ways. They:
allocate bonus points, or
set aside a certain number of places for EAS applicants.
There are seven broad categories of disadvantage:
disrupted schooling
financial hardship
home environment
English language difficulty
personal illness/disability
refugee status
school environment. To be eligible for EAS consideration your educational performance must have been seriously affected, normally for a period of at least six months during Year 11 and/or 12 or equivalent, due to circumstances beyond your control and choosing. Please contact the Acting Careers Adviser, Mr McIntosh for further information.

The Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia is proud to announce its support for the annual Indonesia Festival, to be held in Darling Harbour, Sydney on the 28th of September 2013
In accordance with this year’s Indonesia Festival, we are seeking more than 500 participants to perform the traditional bamboo instrument, angklung, in unison at the event.
ABOUT ANGKLUNG Angklung is a musical instrument made of two bamboo tubes attached to a bamboo frame. The tubes are carved to have a resonant pitch when struck and are tuned to octaves. The base of the frame is held in one hand, whilst the other hand struck the instrument. This causes a repeating note to sound. Each of three or more. performer in an angklung ensemble play just one note or more, but altogether complete melodies are produced. Angklung has been played by the Sundanese for many centuries.
