The police have been briefed and de-briefed this week with high level meetings being held in the run up to the next encounter but given that their hands are tied as to what they can basically do it is up to US the general public to get a grip of the situation and put it on the line that we will not tolerate this anti-social behaviour any longer. The problem has been with us for around 110 years and during that time 2 World Wars have been fought with comrades of opposite religions laying down their lives for their country. Victoria Crosses have been awarded to heroes of both religions yet when it comes down to a football match which at the end of the day results in three points being awarded to the winning team (NOTHING MORE – NOTHING LESS) there is mayhem and serious injury meted out for just being “ONE OF THEM”. Football rivalry between teams is normally healthy and the crazy thing is that when, take for instance, St. Johnstone play Kilmarnock, there are players from different religions in opposition, there is no need for 1000 police officers on duty in fact the majority of these type of games police themselves. Why then is it that when the “Old Firm” meet there is the need to have a high alert and tension in the air from early morning till midnight and beyond? One thing is for sure ...It Has Nothing To Do With Football!! So what happens now? Well for a start we all could act responsibly, but this is easier said than done. Drink is a major factor and with the kick-off last week being 12.30 many supporters began drinking early in the morning, whether they had it in the house from the Saturday night, or were served in the MANY public houses that open their back doors thinking they are doing their customers a favour. Number One Problem..... ALCOHOL. The majority of supporters who rush down four of five pints, a couple of spirits or a bottle of Buckfast, in such a short space of time then go on a supporters bus with a couple of cans or bottles (yes we know that drink is not supposed to be allowed on buses, but we all know a blind eye is turned), then get caught up in the atmosphere of the songs etc..., is a certain recipe for trouble. What happens then is that they enter the game and being surrounded by police and stewards they seem to be able to keep a lid on their emotions albeit some will either be warned or even arrested for minor offences. It’s on the road home when the drink has begun to kick in and the hatred that they have for each other spills over. Now the people we are speaking about here are NOT the usual perceived “Thugs”, these are people who are run of the mill neighbours and have “Friends” of opposite religions, who in any other circumstances would normally do everything they could to help anyone in need. The problem is though, that in the run up to an “Old Firm” game, all the hype that has been spouted by some of the tabloid newspapers in an effort to sell the paper basically fuels the bigotry and hatred. Just the slant put on stories can stir up feelings of bigotry or perceived bigotry and even photos which in the normal run of the week would be accepted as part of the story, all of a sudden are construed as being too much of one side or the other. BIGOTRY, no matter what shape it takes is unacceptable and to put a spin on a phrase or paragraph in a newspaper can be part of it. In a newspaper this is easy to do...Take for example both teams of the “Old Firm” win 1-0 they week before they both meet. Headlines proclaim Celtic Cruise To Victory, Rangers Scrape Win, (or vice versa), such headlines are perceived as favouring one team or the other and in some cases as bigotry, which to normal people sounds crazy but which paper would you take, obviously the one that hypes up your team and seems to bring down the other. FOOTBALL SONGS and CHANTS, many of these are hilarious and show the fun side of football but when it comes to the “Old Firm” fun goes out the window. Most of the songs sung at “Old Firm” matches are now aimed at inciting the opposition by bringing the “Irish Troubles” into them and make no mistake BOTH SIDES ARE AS BAD AS ONE ANOTHER. Of course no one will agree on this as each side proclaims it is part of their heritage to sing such songs. The answer to that is that it is part of EVERYONE in the area’s heritage to walk along a street on the day of a football match and not be subjected to the violence, bigotry or abuse that is happening now after “Old Firm” games. Families, Housewives, Pensioners etc, have the right to enjoy a day of rest without all the hassle that accompanies an “Old Firm” match. We could rave on and on about the negatives that happen when the “Old Firm” meet and the cost to every one of us for the policing, for the ambulances and medics needed, for the upset of our daily lives and much, much, more, suffice to say that.... If you spotted someone trapped in a car crash or a house fire, would you stop to think...”I wonder if that person is a different religion to me?” before trying to save them. If you’ve got to think of the answer , then not only do you have major problems....”WE ALL DO.” Sizzling Suzie’s Spring Spreads Page 4 Centre Pages Feature of East End businesses Page 14

“IT’S BEYOND A JOKE NOW”FOLLOWING the aftermath of the Football Match between Celtic and Rangers last Sunday there were over 300 arrests with accident and emergency units filled to capacity and as usual when it all calms down what is being done about it. BLINDCRAFT RECEIVES ROYAL SEAL OF APPROVALHRH The Princess Royal returned to Glasgow’s Royal Strathclyde Blindcraft Industries (Blindcraft) last week and was shown the range of opportunities the workshop facility provides for disabled workers. Blindcraft is now one of Europe’s largest assisted workshop facilities, employing 260 workers, of whom more than 50 per cent have a disability. It is operated by City Building, Glasgow City Council’s arm’s-length construction company. During her tour of the factory, HRH The Princess Royal was shown how the latest technology is being used

to help staff produce high quality furniture to exacting standards. She met a wide range of workers on the factory floor to hear about Blindcraft’s diverse range of products. HRH The Princess Royal first visited Blindcraft in 2001. City Building managing director Willie Docherty told the Re-Gen North, “The visit by HRH The Princess Royal is a real boost for the morale of every worker and member of staff here. We were honoured with a visit in 2001 and we are delighted to have been able to welcome her back o show the real progress we have made. “HRH The Princess Royal may have observed a

few changes at Blindcraft since her last visit. New machinery means we can maximise the skills of our workforce to make high quality products which are also commercially successful. We have also diversified into manufacturing timber kits for new build housing and schools.” Blindcraft has had a presence in Glasgow for more than 200 years and now specialises in manufacturing a wide range of furniture and construction products. It works closely with a range of organisations that The Princess Royal is associated with, including Glasgow’s Helping Heroes, and employs a number of war veterans at its workshop in Glasgow. Blindcraft also fitted out the shop headquarters of the national charity Help for Heroes in Glasgow in January this year and is a regular supporter of Poppy Scotland. In November 2010, star of TV’s Secret Millionaire programme and former Scottish paratrooper Tony Banks toured the factory to highlight the close relationship between Blindcraft and war veterans (as reported in the Re-Gen North). Blindcraft’s workshop in Glasgow provides a purpose-built, BSEN ISO:9001 assessed, high-tech manufacturing centre, equipped with the latest automated machinery and a highly-trained and skilled workforce It is recognised as a one of the UK’s leading examples of social

enterprise through its commitment to the training and employment of young people from all backgrounds. Blindcraft also benefits from Article 19 of the Public Procurement

Directive which enables public contracts to be reserved to supported factories and businesses where more than 50 per cent of employees are people with disabilities.

Margaret Curran MP and Frank McAveety MSP high-light the proposed changes to vital community lifelineMargaret Curran and Frank McAveety visited Baillieston post office at the weekend to congratulate Mark Adrian and his staff on the service run from and the success of Baillieston Post Office. They know how valued the local post office is to the people of Baillieston. This is great news in Baillieston but legislation recently passed in the House of Commons will mean the privatisation of Royal Mail. This leads to doubts over the future of the Post Office network which can no longer be guaranteed in the years to come. Margaret who spoke in the debate made clear that the legislation is a big mistake and is not supported by the public. Margaret and Frank took the opportunity to make passing shoppers aware of the change to legislation and asked for them to pledge the support by signing a petition. Barlanark Post Office is currently for sale and unless a buyer is found its fate remains uncertain. Margaret Curran says “

Urban Post Offices often face different challenges from those in rural communities, they too deal with isolation and represent a lifeline to their communities. We need to take action now to ensure that we do not end up in a situation on which a large retailer steps in and takes over the service. An elderly

person living in Barlanark may be unable to get to any of the large retailers in the community. A single mother with 3 children and without a car relies on local services that the Post Office provides. This legislation is a forerunner of many Post Office closures because we are not taking the necessary

steps to protect the service.”Frank McAveety says “ Privatisation of the Royal Mail has the long term threat to jobs and services at a local level. I will be working with Margaret to ensure the voices of the east end are heard and all the local post offices are protected”.

AMAZING WINS FOR GLASGOW DENTAL PRACTICE AT TOP UK INDUSTRY AWARDS

The team at Spring Grove Clinic in Barrachnie Road Garrowhill is celebrating the fantastic achievement of winning two of the top UK Private Dentistry Awards of 2010, namely Practice of the Year and Best Patient Care. It was also awarded runner up in Best Community Charity Project and Outstanding Individual of the Year along with being shortlisted for Most Attractive Practice and Best Team. Winning the Practice of the Year and Best Patient Care Awards is a great endorsement of the Spring Grove Clinic teams’ commitment to providing affordable, value for money, community based, professional family oral and dental health care, advice, support and treatment to an exceptionally high standard. The award winning practice prides itself on its patient focussed approach which is always courteous, efficient and friendly, set within surroundings that are luxurious, comfortable and welcoming. Heading up the clinical team is Dr David Cunningham who established his practice in Garrowhill over 14 years ago. Winning these two Awards recognises his firmly held belief that a community based dental practice, where patient relationships and trust are key, using the latest dental technology,

can provide the same level of treatment options, care and surroundings as a large city centre based dental practice. Commenting, David Cunningham said, “The team has worked incredibly hard to make Spring Grove Clinic a fantastic place for our patients. I am delighted that our efforts have been recognised by the top UK industry professionals.” “My focus has always been to provide excellent patient care with the very best dental advice and treatment. I believe in spending time with my patients, fully explaining preventative and treatment options to them and supporting them as they choose their treatment plans. I am very grateful to our patients for their fantastic comments in support of our Awards application.” At the Awards presentation, the Spring Grove Clinic team were commended for excellence across all of the categories, for the state of the art facility, and being a team who strive to provide excellent patient care. Its’ efforts in raising funds to support Yorkhill Children’s Hospital ECMO Unit won the runner-up award for Best Community Charity Project. Spring Grove Clinic is a leader in providing dental implants, cosmetic dentistry, invisible braces, tooth whitening and family dentistry.

McAveety Slams SNP Games Funding DecisionGlasgow Shettleston MSP Frank McAveety has hit out at a decision by Scottish Enterprise to slash Commonwealth Games legacy funding by almost half. Clyde Gateway, the body responsible for regenerating the East End of Glasgow, has been hit with a 46% cut in funding for urban regeneration in 2011/2012. The agency has been told it will share around £6.8 million with five other agencies, instead of the £7 million it was initially promised. Frank said: “The Enterprise Minister seems to be more interested in facilitating meetings for his friend the Education Minister, who he wants to succeed him as an MSP than he is in the well being of the people of the East End. At this very moment he should be pulling a meeting together with Scottish Enterprise to demand that they withdraw this ridiculous proposal and get around the table with all the partners to fulfil the promises made.”Frank added: “Unlike any other renewal programme in the country commitments were made to ensure that Glasgow could make the best of the opportunities for the Games and regeneration investment. There is no better case for having an impact on Scotland’s economic performance and I am demanding an urgent meeting with the Scottish Government to urge them to ensure Scottish Enterprise withdrawal the proposal to make a massive cut in their previous commitments to the area.”

IT was a whole lot of fun at Wellpark Community Hall on Saturday when Playbusters brought their puppet show I believe ….in Nessie delivered by worker, Stevie Ross.

The hall was jam packed and there was lots of laughter and shouting as the children, par-ents and grandparents joined in the hunt for Nessie. After the show there was a variety of games and activities and refreshments for the audience. One local person said “The hall is a fantastic facility and I am glad that it is going to be open more often for all age groups”. Playbusters Project Manager, Margaret Layden, said that they are arranging a programme of activities at the hall and these can take place daytimes, evenings and weekends. Over the next few weeks the hall will be open for enrolment for a variety of workshops such

as gardening, guitar , art and knitting. Margaret said, “We will be in the hall over the next few weeks on Tuesdays, Wednes-days and Thursdays between 11 and 2 p.m. and on Saturdays from 1 until 3 p.m and people can come in for a cuppa and a chat as we would like to hear their ideas and they can enrol for workhshops”. Playbusters will be organis-ing events every month and the next event will tie in with National Spring Clean Week. There will be an environmen-tal event on Saturday 19th March 2011 between 1 – 4 p.m. There will be a variety of fun activities for all of the community and refreshments will be available. So why not come along and find out more or contact Keystone LHO.

Nessie Visits Wellpark Community Hall

Paul Young (Actor and Star of Hooked on Fishing) receives a year’s permit from the Mid Clyde Angling Association Committee at Carmyle

Bailiff John Clark leads the procession to the banks of the Clyde at Carmle

MEMBERS of the Mid Clyde Angling Association laid on an excellent appetiser of, Rolls, Sausages and Tea or Coffee for those who made their way to the river which was in full flow and this was much appreciated by all. A surprise visitor was Television and Screen Star, Paul Young who told the Re-Gen that this was the first time he had been along to Carmyle. Paul said, “The

way Glasgow City Council has worked on cleaning up the Clyde has been fantastic and today we are now seeing the results with Salmon making their way as far up the river as Uddingston, Broomhouse and Carmyle. Paul Young was asked by the Mid Clyde Committee to carry out the tradition of toasting the new season by throwing a measure of whisky into the water and he then proceeded to cast the

first line into the fast flowing river. The Angling Club now runs a section from Broom-house Hall and you can get more details from their web-site at www.midclydeanglin-gassociation.org Prior to the official opening of the season

the gathered assembly took part in a march led by a Piper who incidentally also doubles as the river bailiff so any-one thinking of poaching on the Clyde in this area better beware. In saying that, the fees for fishing on this section

of the Clyde are around £70 so it certainly is well worth contacting John Clark at the club any Thursday night in Broomhouse Hall. Here’s wishing all the local anglers “Tight Lines” for the season ahead.

“Hooked on Carmyle”The banks of the Clyde at Carmyle was certainly the place to be as fishermen from all over the West of Scotland descended to welcome the opening of the Salmon fishing season.

Hi everyone. Looks like spring has sprung I have gorgeous wee snowdrops in my garden and my daffs are showing some green. Not only that but its getting brighter again. I love Scotland, as it is one of the best countries in the world to see the seasons in their full glory. I have been out the last few days doing some gardening. Turning the soil round my rose bushes and clearing the last of the leaves that were hidden under all the snow we had. I have been having a great time with my wee one too. Out and about with his raincoat and wellies. Splashing is the best fun for 3 year olds and brings a smile to all who see him do it. You can see the envy on some grown men’s faces…heehee. It’s still a bit nippy though and have introduced the wean to the delights of hot choccy and marshmallies. Delish! This week I have come up with a few ideas for a tasty weekend meal when you have time to relax and enjoy your dinner as opposed to rushing in from work and feeling under pressure to have it on the table in

20 min …enjoy.

Savoury cheesy tarts

1 pack of ready rolled puff pastry3 large red onions sliced thickly1 round of good goats cheese cut into rounds.HoneyFresh thyme

Cut the pastry into rounds .I use a large teacup. Prick the centres a few times with a fork to stop it rising. Press a small teacup not all the way through each circle to form the border of your tarts. Fry off the onion in a little oil until really soft and almost caramelised. Place a tablespoon of the onions in centre of your pastry and sprinkle with a little thyme. Add your disc of goats cheese. Bake in a hot oven for 15 to 20 min. Until pastry has puffed and cheese is golden and bubbling. Drizzle with a little honey and a grind or two of fresh black pepper. before serving. These tarts are best served just warm. Fantastic with a well chilled ice cold pinot grigio. To use as a main course just serve 2 per person and serve with a hearty

salad and crusty bread.

Minty Lamb burgers

1lb of minced lamb1 large onion finely diced1 tsp dried mint1 tsp dried cumin½ tsp garlic salt1 handful of dried breadcrumbs1 beaten egg1 tub of natural yoghurt

Combine all the ingredients well. Form into balls and flatten out. Put in fridge for at least half an hour before cooking. This helps to form a firm burger. Alternatively you can form into kebab shapes and skewer onto well soaked wooden skewers. Fry off in a little oil until thoroughly cooked turning once or twice. Serve on a ciabatta roll that has been rubbed with a fresh garlic clove and drizzled with a little good olive oil. The natural yoghurt is a fabulous alternative

to ketchup.

Strawberry tarts 1 punnet of ripe sweet strawberriesStrawberry jamTub of whipping creamShort pastry170g self raising flour170g plain flour120 g caster sugar240 g margarine

Combine all the pastry ingredients and mould into a smooth dough. Chill in fridge for 20 min Cut pastry into rounds and bake in a bun tin for 12 min until golden. Allow to cool completely. Whip the cream. Place a little jam in bottom of each tart. Top with a good dollop of cream. Slice the strawberries thinly but not all the way through and fan out. Place on top of the cream. Heat a little of the jam with a little water in the microwave for a few seconds to make a shiny syrup. Allow to cool and drizzle over the tarts.

SOCIAL firm Erskine and leading Scottish construction company City Building announced a new partnership this week, forging a bond between two organisations committed to social enterprise. The partnership will see the two organisations work together to provide more employment for war veterans and people with a disability. With five social firms; Erskine Print, Erskine Furniture, Erskine Garden Centre and the Vanishing Willows Cafe and The Reid Macewen Training and Conference Centre, Erskine makes the perfect partner for Glasgow City Council’s arm’s-length construction company City Building. City Building operates Blindcraft, one of Europe’s largest assisted workshop facilities, which employs 260 workers, of whom more than 50 per cent have a disability, including five ex-Service men. Blindcraft’s purpose-built modern factory manufactures a wide range of products including kitchen, office and educational furniture and timber kits for new-build housing and schools as well as operating the largest repairs and maintenance

contract in Scotland. Both organisations are keen to start the partnership and are looking at a long term relationship and the benefits that it will provide. At a recent tour of the Erskine Social Firms John Brady, Erskine’s Director of Business Development was proud to illustrate to City Building the excellent facilities Erskine offers saying: “We are delighted to be working in partnership with City Building. At a time when business and Government are cutting back, using a Social Firm like Erskine will become a major part of companies’ CSR

programmes throughout the country.” City Building’s Director of Corporate Services, Steve Kelly, said: “Blindcraft makes high specification furniture and timber products for a wide range of companies and organisations. We are proud to be involved with Erskine and believe it is very important to give ex-servicemen an alternative career path. “Community benefits are an integral part of City Building’s business approach. Our partnership with Erskine will help us to continue to deliver added value to our clients.”

CRAZY HAIR DAY AT SWINTONAS part of being a Rights Respecting School, primary 3 pupils at Swinton Primary School in Baillieston were keen to raise money for UNICEF’s Day for Climate Change. The pupils opened their very own ‘Crazy Hair’ salon and invited customers for hair styling and relaxing head massages. Pupils were fortunate to receive ‘Crazy Hair’ training from Karen, a stylist at Gentle Touch Salon. Thankfully there were no scissors or razors used in the project and no pupil was injured or harmed during the taking of this photograph. Following a great fun day the pupils managed to raise £259 which will go to help young people affected by climate change all over the world. Well done to everyone involved!

Police Officers Injured Following Weekend of MayhemFollowing a week-end of mayhem cause by the aftermath of what is supposedly called a “Football Match” a number of police officers suffered injuries as they tried to maintain law and order in the streets of the east end. Fights and disorder broke out in many streets after the game, (As we all had expected) and in just one hour we witnessed 1) A bus getting its windows smashed in Duke street, 2) Someone being dragged from a First Bus in Dennistoun, 3) Three “football supporters” of the same team fighting in Gallowgate at Bellgrove Street, One could hardly stand due to drink, 4) A large scale disturbance in London Road 100 yards from London Road Police Office, 5) A minor fight outside a public house in Shettleston Road and 6) A major disturbance in Baillieston Main Street with injuries sustained. Hardly a sporting event as we know it but there again

did any of us really believe it would pass without incident. Police Officers in Easterhouse were injured during a public disorder whilst trying to arrest those responsible, other officers were injured following the arrest of a person during a “Breach of the Peace” and carrying out an arrest of a person wanted on warrant. These are only the tip of the ice-berg as we’re sure many of you reading this will have witnessed other acts of Anti-Social behaviour which have gone un-reported. The BBC news this week has been highlighting disturbances in Libya and the Middle East, many local residents compared this to the streets of the East End last Sunday, (thank heavens there were no guns around to make matters worse). How long does the Glasgow public have to endure this? Many of those involved in the disturbances claim to be defending their religion................Enough Said.

LOCAL man, Stephen Lyall is drumming up the ‘feel good’ factor with his Glasgow-based firm, Negotiate Now, set to create 70 new jobs by the end of April. Mr Lyall, CEO, of the online discount directory, is work-ing with Glasgow City Council agencies to drive more jobs to

the area. Telesales roles top the va-cancy list with 35 expected to be created. However, vacan-cies are across the board with posts for admin and office staff as well as IT, program-mers, web designers and SEO specialists. Mr Lyall says: “We are delighted to bring jobs to

Glasgow. Our goal is 70 new jobs by the end of April and we are bang on target.” By the 30th of March ap-proximately 300,000 Negoti-ate Now discount cards will be distributed throughout Glasgow and the surrounding area. Discount card holders will receive a 20 per cent reduction

on goods and services from 95 per cent of all listed businesses. Consumers simply flash their discount card to qualify for savings from the sector-diverse directory. Barry Porter Robinson, Direc-tor who describes Negotiate Now as a new concept in online discount shopping says: “It is fantastic to create 70 new jobs. However, this is just the beginning. Watch this space.”

It’s a “WISE” Child who Can Share

STAFF in the Women’s Aid Centre in Easterhouse were over the moon this week following a visit from members of the WISE Group Charlotte Street Nursery. Over the past months the staff at Charlotte Street have been collecting toys brought in by the kids and excess toys that belonged to the nursery and on Wednesday they loaded up their cars and made their way to Easterhouse where they presented the “Goodies” to the Womens Aid group. This gesture was really appreciated by

the group who do a sterling job in the area. Unfortunately still in this day and age, Womens Aid have to cope with families who contact them due to abuse and upset in the home and more often than not there are children involved. Receiving the gift of these toys will go a long way towards calming the children down in such circumstances and it’s great to see that the Wise group Nursery thought about others when they began the collection. Well done to everyone involved in such a tremendous gesture.

Pictured here is a sight for sore eyes as the National Indoor Sports Arena and the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome stay on course for completion as we all prepare for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. The venues have a combined price tag of £103 million which sounds a lot, (Of Course it is ....Ed), but given that it will be seen by a global television audience of at least one billion viewers it will be well worth the expenditure. We in the East End take pride in our area and to see the progress of both facilities does the old heart good. When we think of the old days and the great reputation of the east end tradesmen for quality and completion, the site just off London Road at Springfield Road is almost on a par with the past glories. We have no doubt that the Centre and the Velodrome will be completed in time and that both will stand as a legacy to us winning the right to host the games. Keep up the good work everyone.

Commonwealth Games Update

Housing and Communities Minister Alex Neil has congratulated Glasgow Housing Association (GHA) on the progress it has made over the past year. The Minister visited GHA headquarters in Glasgow city centre on Monday to meet Board members. They discussed some of the major im-provements which have been put in place since GHA carried out a review of its future just over a year ago. GHA listened hard to its tenants, factored homeowners, staff and stakeholders includ-ing the Scottish Government and Glasgow City Council, and agreed a new purpose and direction. That paved the way for a transformation at GHA which so far has seen:

a slimmed down head office and a strength-ened frontline - with 82% of GHA staff now involved in delivering services directly to tenants and factored homeowners

-ments with a new charter for tenants and new Area Committees - giving more say and local control to tenants and factored homeowners

Transfers (SST) - where it is what tenants want – which is on schedule to complete this summer with up to 19,000 homes in total transferring

including letting performance and tenancy sustainment

organisations including Customer Service Excellence (CSE), the national standard for excellence in customer service in public sector organisations overseen by the Gov-

awarded GHA the Sword of Honour – the top health and safety award given this year to only 38 organisations in the world. Housing and Communities Minister Alex Neil said: “GHA has made excellent progress over the last 12 months delivering 15 stock transfers, implementing new governance ar-rangements and maximising the economic benefits from its investment. “The Scottish Government remains com-mitted to helping local communities to flourish, become stronger, safer places to live, and offering improved opportunities and a better quality of life. “As a large housing organisation, GHA is in an excellent position to respond to the challenges that lie ahead and to meet the needs of its tenants, factored homeowners and the city.” GHA Board Chair Gordon Sloan said: “We

were delighted to welcome the Minister to the Board to talk about our progress and our plans for the future as a long-term landlord. “We have achieved much in the last year. Not only did we agree a new purpose and direction after listening to our custom-ers and stakeholders but we have also delivered an SST programme, improved and expanded our services, put more staff on the frontline and given tenants and factored homeowners more local control. “We’re looking forward over the next few years to building on the solid founda-tions we’ve put in place – by continuing to create better homes and by further improving and expanding the services we deliver. We are also more committed than ever before to working with our partners to make a real contribution to a better Glasgow.”

PUPILS CREATE 100-METRE MURALA prominent space in Glasgow’s East End has been transformed by a stunning new piece of artwork measuring 100 metres in length thanks to pupils from a local secondary school. The site on the corner of London Road and Brook Street is just 300 metres east of Bridgeton Cross and is the location for a new HQ building, known as Eastgate, for Glasgow Community Safety Services (GCSS). Construction work is underway, and for the 15 month period of the contract the site will be surrounded by a hoarding,100 metres in length and 3 metres in height, specially designed by a group of pupils from Eastbank Academy in Shettleston. The artwork has been commissioned by Clyde Gateway, the biggest Urban Regeneration Company in Scotland. Eastgate is one of the key early developments by Clyde Gateway, bringing around 500 jobs to the area thanks to GCSS consolidating most of its operations under one roof. Ian Manson, the Chief Executive of Clyde Gateway said “Eastgate is a hugely important project for us, and we wanted to do something a little bit different with the temporary hoardings that will surround the site. Many of the pupils from the Bridgeton area attend Eastbank Academy and so it makes sense to involve the school in developing and designing something that will be unique and appropriate to the location. “We have, almost literally, given the pupils a giant empty canvas to on which to project their ideas and thoughts. They are enthused from working with a team of professional artists to take these ideas forward and make them a reality.” The pupils are being assisted

by WAVE, a Glasgow-based public arts organisation which specialises in large urban regeneration arts projects. A number of workshops have already been held and the pupils are exploring the possibilities of animated lighting and sound as well as the more traditional drawing and painting. Peter McCaughey of WAVE said “We are delighted to be working with Eastbank Academy, Clyde Gateway and GCSS on this exciting project. “Eastbank is a great school, with an ambition for a real-world education for all its pupils. This project is a fantastic showcase for the talents and imaginative ideas of the pupils, as well as being a focus for the local community. The finished article is going to be quite special and something which will be much admired.” Alexis Grant is the Employability Officer at Eastbank Academy and is part of the team of 6 staff and more than 100 pupils of all ages who are working on the project. She said “This sort of project really motivates

pupils and it has been hugely rewarding for everyone to work so closely with the team from WAVE. It has been a wonderful experience and I know that the pupils can’t wait for their work to be officially unveiled and be seen by the many hundreds of thousands of people who will walk or drive past the site while the construction works are underway.” Phil Walker, the managing director of GCSS said “It is wonderful to see the enthusiasm and commitment being shown by the pupils. Part of our thinking behind GCSS putting its HQ in Bridgeton is to involve ourselves with local people as they play their part in the on-going social, economic and physical transformation of the area. The work that will be on display outside Eastgate is a great example of this, and we are proud to be part of something this special.” The hoardings were erected in January 2011 and remain in place until the Eastgate office, a 6,000 sq metre development costing £9.7m, opens in Spring 2012.

Local Councillor George Redmond is dedicated to seeing progress in the Dalmarnock/Bridgeton and Parkhead areas not only because he represents the local residents in the area but mostly because he loves the buzz it gives the place when good things are happening. Everywhere you turn in the East End, Councillor Redmond seems to be there, (and it’s not like many other dignitaries, who would turn up to the opening of an envelope), because he is genuinely concerned about what is happening. Only recently the councillor was in the national newspapers following his dismay about the East End losing out on funding, did he accept it? No he fought to get it re-instated and within a few days he had won that particular fight. As a member of the Clyde Gateway board George has constantly pushed to get the best for the area and more often than not he has succeeded. Now with the new development which is taking place at Eastgate (bringing around 500 jobs into the area you would think he would relax a little, but think again). This week we caught up with him at the opening of the Forget-Me-Not Garden in Lilybank and there he took time out to chat to the local residents and have a laugh with them. When we asked

him where he finds the energy he replied, “I get my energy from the people of the East End and anything I can do to assist in making the area better, I will strive to continue to do.” He continued, “I am East End born and bred and even though I have travelled quite a lot, both on holiday and through my council work, I still love coming home. There’s not a place I would swap for the East End or the people who live here.” Councillor Redmond is an Executive member of Glasgow City Council and as such takes his position very seriously even

though at times he can joke with the best. He told the Re-Gen, “I have been elected to do my best for the folk in my constituency and if they have belief in me, I have even more belief in them. To see projects such as the Velodrome, The National Indoor Sports Centre and the Eastgate development taking shape gives me hope for the future of this area and believe me we are only just beginning.” With people like George Redmond working for the East End the Re-Gen has no doubt that the future will certainly be bright.

“WORKING IN PARTNERSHIP” is a phrase we hear a lot nowadays but in many cases it is a phrase that “pays lip-service” and is just a convenient way of companies and organisations saying, “we have got a bit of work in your area and while we’re here we’ll say all the right things”. This is certainly not so about the DAWN GROUP as they continue to re-generate the East End of Glasgow. The Dawn Group certainly take “Working in Partnership” very seriously and following a meeting with one of the directors, Paul O’Donnell, this certainly comes across. In our last issue we ran a story on the new Eastgate development at Brook Street just off London Road Bridgeton, where Dawn Construction have begun building a 6000 metre office block which will become the new headquarters for Glasgow Community and Safety Services. This exciting project is being funded by Aviva and will attract around 500 jobs to the East End. Up just off High Street, there is yet another fantastic development taking place at COLLEGELANDS, also involving the Dawn Group and although this is a massive project for the area, it seems to have just crept up on us since the first sod was cut. The COLLEGELANDS regeneration project is

transforming what was once a derelict area, (remember the old railway sidings which were an eyesore), into a vibrant new commercial, leisure and residential district. Over a million square feet of space will eventually contain a mix of offices, a hotel, a multi-storey car park, student accommodation plus residential units and retail. The whole concept of these two exciting developments have not just come about by chance and this is where the Dawn Group and their partners come to the fore. From the first initial idea, to the laying of the first brick and beyond, the Dawn Group have certainly “Worked in Partnership” with everyone concerned in the future of our area and this has paid off big time as the transformation begins to take shape. Consultations have been ongoing with, Glasgow City Council, Clyde Gateway, City Building and others, to ensure that the Dawn Group deliver exactly what they promise, and to this end they have certainly lived up to their commitment. Both Collegelands and Eastgate are being delivered in partnership with City Building. Visiting the site at COLLEGELANDS, we were amazed at just how smoothly the development seems to have progressed and when we heard that the first phase will be completed in the autumn of this year we have to take our hats off to the way the Dawn Group have conducted their business throughout. Communication is essential in this day and age and although the road and rail network certainly comes under the communication banner, with excellent links to the M8/M74 motorways and the rail link to Edinburgh from High Street, the Dawn Group have taken the communication side that extra yard by involving the community as a whole in every step of both developments. It’s all too easy, as we have seen in the past, for a major

company to come into the area and TELL us what WE NEED, without any dialogue taking place and further down the line, WE have been left with the problems that have arisen. That is not the way the DAWN GROUP works. There has been consultation from day one on both developments, not only with the council and re-generation companies but also with local resident groups and schools. As Paul O’Donnell said, “Dawn feels as if we are part of the community and as such we want the best for the area. We want to leave a legacy for the East End and in speaking to people and finding out just what they want, we can incorporate many of these suggestions into our plans as the projects progress”. He continued, “We are delighted to be involved in the East End as

we believe that the whole place is about to come alive after far to many years of being ignored. Organisations

such as Clyde Gateway are fully committed to re-generating the area and we are delighted to be able to continue to work in partnership with them. People in the East End of Glasgow have a pride in their area and we are committed to restoring that pride through working together with them.” Not only is the DAWN GROUP in partnership with City Building LLP generating employment in the area (with 70 local jobs connected to the Eastgate development), they are also ensuring that those employed are receiving a “Living Wage” as the group were one of the first major companies to sign up to the “Living Wage” agreement which was launched in March 2009. The Re-Gen is delighted to welcome the DAWN GROUP into the East End as a major player in the re-generation of the area and we look forward in reporting many more success stories emanating from the company in the future.

CITY BUILDING IS PROUD TO WORK WITH CLYDE GATEWAY

CITY BUILDING Continuing the Good WorkIN our last issue we reported that leading Scottish property and construction company Dawn Group had been awarded the £10 million design and build contract for a 6,000 sq m office development at Brook Street/London Road in the East End. Funded by Aviva Investors, the largest manager of real estate in the UK, Eastgate is a vital part of the first phase of the Clyde Gateway regeneration project which is transforming the East End of Glasgow. Glasgow City Council has agreed a 20 year lease on the building in Bridgeton which will house 500 staff from Glasgow Community Safety Services. The state of the art Grade A office building will be fitted out by Dawn Group’s construction partner, Glasgow City Council’s arm’s-length construction company City Building. The development will also provide much needed employment within the city with Dawn Group and City Building providing opportunities for up to 70 local residents in the form of full-time posts, modern apprenticeships, training placements and work experience. City Building from their base in Darnick Street are certainly heavily involved in the re-generation of the East end and are committed to bringing employment to the local area. Willie Docherty, Managing Director of City Building, added: “Building on our existing partnership with Dawn Group at the Collegelands development, the Eastgate project will enable us to deliver an exciting office development for Aviva Investors. In addition, it will further strengthen the employment and training opportunities we are already delivering in the Clyde Gateway area.” Russell Stewart, Director of Dawn Group, said: “We are delighted to be working with our partners to construct what will be a significant and exciting new development in Glasgow’s East End. Eastgate is a fantastic example of the private and public sector collaborating to deliver a commercially

viable project that will boost the local economy.“This is our second major regeneration project currently on the ground in Glasgow. The other being Collegelands, our £200 million mixed use development in High Street / Duke Street. Both are testament to our ability to execute high quality, multi-partner initiatives and also to our confidence in

the Glasgow market.”Ian Manson, Chief Executive of Clyde Gateway, commented: “The transformation of the Clyde Gateway communities cannot be completed without support and investment from the private sector and so it is hugely significant that a developer with the stature and standing of Dawn Group is making such

a substantial commitment to the area. I’m especially pleased that the construction phase of the Eastgate office development will bring 70 much needed jobs and training opportunities to local people.” Construction work on the site has now started with completion and occupation expected by April 2012.

PLAYBUSTER DAVID Picks up AwardLOCAL Hero David McLuckie was honoured with a ‘Project Scotland Voscar’ for his ‘Significant Contribution’ to the East End community. The prestigious awards ceremony took place in the Lloyds TSB Banking Group building in Edinburgh last month. David volunteered at local community project Playbusters through Project Scotland who are a national charity helping young people realise their potential through volunteering. David volunteered for 30 hours a week for 12 weeks. Having been unemployed for a long time with no future job prospects, David lacked confidence and remained determined even out of his comfort zone. He was a credit to both himself and the project the way he went about his tasks and now he feels great about having a positive impact on his community and gained respect from people who have witnessed the great change in him. David completed the Glasgow University Activate course (50 hour community development introduction) and achieved the 200 hour Millennium Volunteer Award (signed by the Scottish

Government). The local lad also volunteered during clubs, allotment, ‘Connecting Generations’ and environment work run by the Playbuster organisation and using his local knowledge David took some of the young people fishing and they loved it! One of the young Playbusters members, Chelsea caught a very impressive fish (see pic, Paul Young would have been proud of that catch Chelsea), in the section known as 'the graveyard' due to the lack of fish. The experienced anglers nearby were amazed and immediately set up their rods near the youngster hoping for a slice of the action! Playbusters’ Project Manager Margaret Layden told the Re-Gen, ‘David is a shining example of how local people use skills and talents to benefit the community’. David now works for Playbusters and is an excellent role model helping combat the negative stereotypes of young people. The last word goes to David who told us, ‘If you get the chance to volunteer with Project Scotland and Playbusters grab it with both hands and stick with it. You will make a difference to both yourself and others’

FORGET-ME-NOT GARDEN

EARLIER this week, the community of Cuthelton and Lilybank, gathered to celebrate the opening of their Forget-Me-Not garden at Cuthelton Street. The weather stayed dry long enough for the Chairman of Parkhead Housing Tenants Association, Mr John Ferguson, to do the honours and cut the red ribbon of the gate to the beautiful area. The Cuthelton Social Club, whose members are mainly from the Cuthelton Sheltered complex, have been planning this day for nearly 3 years, Mrs. Ellen Whelan , treasurer of the club said, “We had a pipe dream of developing a rather tired communal space, to commemorate the passing of loved ones. We mentioned it to our warden, Maureen Smith and she contacted the management at Parkhead Housing Association and was met with encouragement and substantial support.” Chair of the Cuthelton Club, Mrs Mary Layden said, “The generosity of Parkhead Housing Association, with the dedication of the plot, endless administration, not to mention their

staunch belief in us, was amazing. We would also like to thank, Glasgow City Council for a most generous donation of £ 2.800 , that accelerated our dream into reality. The opening ceremony was well attended with many members of the community turning

up. They were joined by James Strang, Chief Executive of P.H.A. and George Redmond, Councillor of the Calton ward. Everyone was given a gold or silver helium balloon, which represented the good wishes to passed loved ones and on the countdown to the ribbon cutting were asked to release them . Ruby Carmichael, a neighbour in the sheltered house said, “ We want this garden to be a happy and friendly place for everyone to share and today has certainly been a wonderful celebration of all the love and hard work dedicated to this plot.”. The Club wish to extend their thanks to the apprentices of Daldowie Garden Centre and their tutor and mentor Karina Mirzo. Secretary of the Cuthelton Club, Margaret Palmer told the Re-Gen,” These boys are a wonderful example of the youth of today, they worked tirelessly through some dreadful weather to make our dream come true, they are a credit to Glasgow and their families” Anyone wishing information relating to the Forget-Me –Not Garden should contact, Maureen Smith tel. 554 3764.

JOHN MASON has congratulated John Swinney for getting his fourth budget through the Scottish Parliament. John Mason is the SNP candidate for Shettleston in May’s Scottish General Election. He writes, “Some people had thought that a minority SNP government would be easily defeated in the annual budget process. But this has not been the case. Headlines in the budget included: abolition of prescription charges, continuing the Council Tax freeze, maintaining 1,000 additional police officers, creating 25,000 modern apprenticeship places, continuing educational grants – EMAs (being cut in England), extending the scope of the living wage of £7.15, continuing the small business bonus scheme (i.e. no rates for small businesses), and £16 million further investment in housing. In addition Glasgow City Council is once again getting more money per head of population than any other mainland authority. Glasgow is to get £2,617 per head compared to Edinburgh’s £1,821. The Scottish average is £2,128”. After the budget was passed John Mason said, “Despite the tough times we are all in, there is a lot of good news in the Scottish budget, not least the continuing

freeze on Council Tax. It is an unfair tax and hits pensioners and poorer folk hardest. The fact that Glasgow is again to get more per head than any other mainland authority is good news for our City although I realise other councils are a bit jealous! “And of course there is also the continuing capital expenditure by the Scottish Government, much of which is focussed on Glasgow. Just last week I travelled on the new M80 for the first time. And closer to home we have the new rail link to Edinburgh, the M74 coming along, and the Commonwealth Games buildings progressing fast. “It was disappointing that Labour voted against this budget. Presumably they don’t want more apprenticeships!”

A 23 year old man was sitting in his car in Circus Drive Dennistoun when 2 young men approached him. They tapped the window and when he opened the door they demanded he get out of his car. He was then threatened by a knife, punched in the face and his car was driven off by one of them. The incident happened in broad daylight just after 8am on Monday morning (21st February). The car was an Audi A3 that was abandoned in nearby Broompark Street. The 23 year old did not require to go to hospital. Detective

Sergeant Jackie Ferrie from London Road CID said:“There appears to be no reason at all for this attack and it’s important we trace the men responsible.”Both suspects were white, 18-20, 5ft6in-5ft7in, slim with local accents. One wore a white hooded top with the word ‘BEAR’ on the front in blue with a red background. The other was wearing a light coloured blue adidas top with yellow stripes on the sleeves.Anyone with information is asked to contact 0141 532 4636 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

An 81 year-old man has died following a fire at his home in the East End of Glasgow on Wednesday (23rd February). Around 3.30am on Wednesday morning, emergency services were called to a report of a fire at a flat in Whitehill Place, Dennistoun. The fire service extinguished the fire and discovered the body of the 81 year-old man within.Enquiries are ongoing to ascertain the cause of the fire.A full report will be sent to the Procurator Fiscal.

BANNERMAN High School community police officer Craig Borthwick who also doubles as a wildlife expert in Strathclyde Police was called upon earlier this week to perform a rescue from the River Clyde. Thankfully the rescue was of a fish and not a human but neverthele ss it still required Constable Borthwick’s expertise. Nicknamed “Clyde” the porpoise

in question had been spotted in the River Clyde nearly a week ago near the weir at Glasgow Green. Concern

had been growing as the fish had been in the area for quite a while and its supply of food seemed to be limited. Constable Borthwick assisted by members of the Clyde Rowing Club and coastguards used the high tide last Tuesday to coax the Porpoise back through the weir and on to safety of the open sea where it has a much bigger menu to choose from. The rescue was conducted by the sophisticated method of.... wait for it.....BANGING SCAFFOLDING POLES TOGETHER, whilst experts from the Sea Mammal Research Unit at St Andrews University were standing by with recorded Killer Whale Sounds. “Gaun Yersel” any sensible East Ender would know that, if approached by someone banging

scaffy poles the Gither, you shoot the craw quickly”. Who would be scared of a Killer Whale in this area anyway? Well done Craig and the fellow rescuers. One thing that comes

out of this story though is that with all the cleaning work that has been done by the City Council on the Clyde it is certainly paying off if porpoises are being attracted to Glasgow Green.

BOGUS CALLERSSHETTLESTON and Baillieston Community Policing Teams are reminding all residents in the Budhill, Mount Vernon and Springboig area, particularly the elderly, of the need to be vigilant of ‘Bogus Callers’. There has been 2 recent incidents in the area involving ‘Bogus Callers’ gaining access to homes on the pretext of doing repair work and, whilst within, stealing cash and other valuables. In one incident, an elderly couple who reside in the Mount Vernon area had two males attend at their door. They informed them that they were workmen and could fix the repair on their roof. They were permitted entry to the property. On their real identities being demanded, both left the property. It was discovered that a three figure sum of money had been stolen. These males are described as: 1) Male, white European, 30-33 years, 5’11 ft, slim build, clothing unknown, missing teeth on lower jaw. 2) Male, white European, 27-33 years, 5’11 ft, stocky build, dark coloured clothing. In the latest incident, 2 male suspects attended at the property of an elderly woman who resides in the Mount Vernon area. They convinced her that she needed roof repairs. The suspects were permitted entry and made off with a four figure sum of cash. 1) Male, white European, 27-33 years, 5’8 ft, medium build, wearing a black beanie style woollen hat and dark clothing. 2) Male, white European, 30-35 years, 5’8 ft, slim build, dark knee length overcoat. Anyone who may have seen the described males in the vicinity of Mount Vernon are asked to contact the police contact centre on 0141 532 4800 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. All calls will be treated in confidence. Crime prevention advice from the Strathclyde Police is:

Carmyle Result and Appreciation.AFTER many residents in the Carmyle area were being subjected to youngsters running through their gardens and trying to leap over hedges. This coupled with acts of vandalism in the area meant something had to be done.

undertook extensive local enquiries and these resulted in a number of youths being identified and reported. One of the local residents who had been subjected to this anti-social behaviour and in

Constable Coburn and her colleagues for their prompt action. The resident stated, “Constable Coburn’s attention was first class, she is an excellent police constable and seems dedicated to her job.”

Another Thank-You from a Concerned Partner.Police officers came to the aid of an elderly man who collapsed in the street during the new year holiday period. The officers provided assistance and re-assurance before conveying the man home. He has since recovered and his grateful wife recently sent a card to Constables Mark Nelson and Stefan Dawson at Shettleston Police office thanking them for their help and understanding during a particular trying time for the family.

Racial Abuse Charges: A group of 10-14 year old youths have been traced by officers from London Road police office and are now facing charges relating to the racial torment of a woman, originally from an African country, and her family in Bridgeton. The woman had told housing officers of ongoing incidents of harassment, name-calling and stone-throwing at her windows. She had originally been reluctant to come forward and speak to police and all the incidents had gone unreported.
