Colin Morrison (46) provided several illegal cash loans to a vulnerable couple who were forced to move home to escape his clutches after being charged interest which amounted to over 719,000%. Joseph Rankin and his partner Angela Clements (who suffers from the muscle wasting disease Miotonic Dystrophy), borrowed cash from Morrison and struggled to pay the high interest levied on the loan. Often the couple were left to scrimp on around £15-00 a week as the pressure became too much to pay off the loan, forcing them to get deeper into the mire by borrowing from other illegal lenders just to pay off Morrison. Two other women, Elizabeth Cassells and Georgina Close also fell under the grasp of the Sandyhills Shark as they both borrowed money unaware that they would be paying back extortionate rates of interest. Appearing at Glasgow Sheriff Court last Wednesday Morrison admitted the charge as the Crown accepted a plea of Not Guilty to assaulting Joseph Rankin and a Breach of the Peace charge. Morrison’s partner Roseann, was also charged with lending money illegally but her not guilty plea was accepted by the Crown. Prosecutor Richard Hannay told the court that Mr Rankin and Ms Clements borrowed between £10-00 and £400-00 from Morrison and it was estimated they had paid back around £1500 a year for six years. It was stated that the couple would borrow from other lenders just to meet the repayments on Morrison’s loans. Eventually it became too much for the couple and they were forced to flee their home to escape from the money lenders in the East End. Elizabeth Cassells borrowed cash from Morrison around Christmas time in 2007 and continued to do so for the next three years. Widow, Georgina Close (50) also borrowed sums but always repaid them the following week at an Interest Rate of 30%. When the matter was reported to the police a warrant was issued to search the Morrison home in the quiet, leafy, suburbs of Sandyhills and officers found £7,230 stashed in his wardrobe. Prosecutor Hannay stated that Colin Morrison had not been employed or in receipt of benefits during the period in question. Sheriff Martin Jones told the accused, “Those who prey on the poor, weak and vulnerable in this way will be severely treated by the courts.” He also stated that Morrison had pled guilty to a very serious charge. Sentence was deferred until later this month for background reports and Morrison was released on bail. He also faces proceedings under the proceeds of crime act. SHETTLESTON COMES TOP IN BIG FREEZE SURVEYTENANTS in Shettleston survived the winter freeze thanks, in part, to the excellent performance of Shettleston Housing Association’s emergency out-of-hours repairs service. The service received a resounding vote of confidence in a survey the Association commissioned to assess how well it had performed during the exceptionally cold weather in December and January. Independent market research company, IBP, surveyed all tenants who had called the service between December 1st 2010 and January 10th 2011, when temperatures dropped to minus 10 degrees and stayed below freezing for over four weeks. All over the city, transport was grinding to a halt, pipes were freezing and heating systems shutting down. As might be expected, the vast majority of calls made to the Association’s emergency repairs service during this time were to do with heating and water systems. Some 183 households used the out-of-hours service during this period and 125 of those households responded to the survey. Tenants gave the service a mark of 9 out of 10 for satisfaction with the service overall, which is a very

impressive result given the level of disruption the weather had caused to all kinds of services across the country. Most respondents had their initial call answered first time and there was a very high level of satisfaction with the attitude and knowledge of those answering the calls. The vast majority of emergency call outs (81%) were attended to within six hours of the initial call being made and most problems were able to be fully resolved at the initial call-out. Where problems could not be fully resolved at the

initial call, a temporary solution was provided in 85% of the cases. Commenting on the survey results, Shettleston Housing Association Director, Chris Cunningham, said:“We are delighted that our emergency service performed so well during these most difficult of circumstances. We are also very pleased with the performance and customer care of our two out-of-hours contractor, Carillion and CTS who worked tirelessly for our tenants.”

STAFF and pupils at Bannerman High School in Baillieston were strutting their stuff on Friday as they donned their trendy gear and put on their dancing shoes for charity. The “Strictly Come Dancing” event is part of the overall “Yellow Day” Livestrong Cancer Trust appeal which the school takes part in every year with great results. Already the hard working pupils and staff have raised over £1200 during a non-uniform day and they also sold over £300 for the dancing event. Jacqueline Purdie (Head Teacher) told the Re-Gen, “Everyone at the school has a strong fund-raising ethos and we knew that the “Strictly” event was ideal to hold

on the last day of term as both the pupils and the staff were up for it. A Stand in “Brucie,” (Good Game-Good Game), introduced the judges, Bruno, Craig, Alesha and Len, as the contest began in front of a packed arena. The competition was fierce as the contestants danced their hearts out much to the delight of the cheering pupils. Although there were winners in the Staff and Pupil categories we refuse to name them as everyone who took part was a winner in our eyes. Well done everyone at Bannerman for such an innovative way of raising much needed funding for such a worthy cause.

Margaret Curran MP and Frank McAveety MSP high-light the proposed changes to vital community lifelineMargaret Curran and Frank McAveety visited Baillieston post office at the weekend to congratulate Mark Adrian and his staff on the service run from and the success of Baillieston Post Office. They know how valued the local post office is to the people of Baillieston. This is great news in Baillieston but legislation recently passed in the House of Commons will mean the privatisation of Royal Mail. This leads to doubts over the future of the Post Office network which can no longer be guaranteed in the years to come. Margaret who spoke in the debate made clear that the legislation is a big mistake and is not supported by the public. Margaret and Frank took the opportunity to make passing shoppers aware of the change to legislation and asked for them to pledge the support by signing a petition. Barlanark Post Office is currently for sale and unless a buyer is found its fate remains uncertain. Margaret Curran says “

Urban Post Offices often face different challenges from those in rural communities, they too deal with isolation and represent a lifeline to their communities. We need to take action now to ensure that we do not end up in a situation on which a large retailer steps in and takes over the service. An elderly

person living in Barlanark may be unable to get to any of the large retailers in the community. A single mother with 3 children and without a car relies on local services that the Post Office provides. This legislation is a forerunner of many Post Office closures because we are not taking the necessary

steps to protect the service.”Frank McAveety says “ Privatisation of the Royal Mail has the long term threat to jobs and services at a local level. I will be working with Margaret to ensure the voices of the east end are heard and all the local post offices are protected”.

AMAZING WINS FOR GLASGOW DENTAL PRACTICE AT TOP UK INDUSTRY AWARDS

The team at Spring Grove Clinic in Barrachnie Road Garrowhill is celebrating the fantastic achievement of winning two of the top UK Private Dentistry Awards of 2010, namely Practice of the Year and Best Patient Care. It was also awarded runner up in Best Community Charity Project and Outstanding Individual of the Year along with being shortlisted for Most Attractive Practice and Best Team. Winning the Practice of the Year and Best Patient Care Awards is a great endorsement of the Spring Grove Clinic teams’ commitment to providing affordable, value for money, community based, professional family oral and dental health care, advice, support and treatment to an exceptionally high standard. The award winning practice prides itself on its patient focussed approach which is always courteous, efficient and friendly, set within surroundings that are luxurious, comfortable and welcoming. Heading up the clinical team is Dr David Cunningham who established his practice in Garrowhill over 14 years ago. Winning these two Awards recognises his firmly held belief that a community based dental practice, where patient relationships and trust are key, using the latest dental technology,

can provide the same level of treatment options, care and surroundings as a large city centre based dental practice. Commenting, David Cunningham said, “The team has worked incredibly hard to make Spring Grove Clinic a fantastic place for our patients. I am delighted that our efforts have been recognised by the top UK industry professionals.” “My focus has always been to provide excellent patient care with the very best dental advice and treatment. I believe in spending time with my patients, fully explaining preventative and treatment options to them and supporting them as they choose their treatment plans. I am very grateful to our patients for their fantastic comments in support of our Awards application.” At the Awards presentation, the Spring Grove Clinic team were commended for excellence across all of the categories, for the state of the art facility, and being a team who strive to provide excellent patient care. Its’ efforts in raising funds to support Yorkhill Children’s Hospital ECMO Unit won the runner-up award for Best Community Charity Project. Spring Grove Clinic is a leader in providing dental implants, cosmetic dentistry, invisible braces, tooth whitening and family dentistry.

McAveety Slams SNP Games Funding DecisionGlasgow Shettleston MSP Frank McAveety has hit out at a decision by Scottish Enterprise to slash Commonwealth Games legacy funding by almost half. Clyde Gateway, the body responsible for regenerating the East End of Glasgow, has been hit with a 46% cut in funding for urban regeneration in 2011/2012. The agency has been told it will share around £6.8 million with five other agencies, instead of the £7 million it was initially promised. Frank said: “The Enterprise Minister seems to be more interested in facilitating meetings for his friend the Education Minister, who he wants to succeed him as an MSP than he is in the well being of the people of the East End. At this very moment he should be pulling a meeting together with Scottish Enterprise to demand that they withdraw this ridiculous proposal and get around the table with all the partners to fulfil the promises made.”Frank added: “Unlike any other renewal programme in the country commitments were made to ensure that Glasgow could make the best of the opportunities for the Games and regeneration investment. There is no better case for having an impact on Scotland’s economic performance and I am demanding an urgent meeting with the Scottish Government to urge them to ensure Scottish Enterprise withdrawal the proposal to make a massive cut in their previous commitments to the area.”

ONE of our regular readers (who wishes to remain anonymous, because he doesn’t seek publicity, no other reason), contacted us recently to tell us about his ongoing predicament. When we heard what he had to say, we were basically embarrassed, not by what he had to relate but more about the way the authorities treat those who are in no condition to fight back. Mr S. (as we are calling him), was diagnosed with Advanced Prostate Cancer last year and vowed to continue not only to fight the disease but also to not be a burden on the state, (as he put it). He attends the MacMillan cancer support group in Easterhouse and as such the “members” tend to share tips and the like. Most of them have experienced the sort of things that our Mr S. is going through now and we feel it is pathetic that people who have been diagnosed with such serious illnesses and the trauma and stress related to this have to fight tooth and nail for something that should be their right. Let us begin with what we regard as the ultimate slap in the face.....Until last week, our Mr S. had to pay for his monthly cancer jag, (thankfully prescription charges were abolished on the 1st of April), Secondly, due to his condition he has had to give up full time employment, although he still tries to do some work, but he has been refused Disability Living Allowance, (something we are led to believe from others we have spoken to, is automatically refused on the

first application). He was told to put an appeal in (a year ago!!), and he is still awaiting a hearing, although this won’t automatically be the result he is looking for. Not only this, but when he contacted the Tax Credit people to inform them that he was no longer able to work over 30 hours a week ...... He got his weekly £50 Tax Credit relief taken from him immediately. Although he receives some help with his rent he still pays a fair amount out of the small amount of cash he has from his wee job. YES he is still working to try and make ends meet. As far as hospital and doctor’s appointments are concerned he has to buy a £40 monthly Transcard to be able to get to these. As far as his application for Disability Living Allowance is concerned, his doctor and his consultant both furnished him with letters of support but to no avail. Only last month his girl-friend helped him pay his Gas and Electricity bills although he tried to refused her help. It is little wonder he has opened up about this state of affairs and as he says it is not only him that is experiencing these financial problems, there are thousands throughout our city in the same boat. The City that is the Cancer Capital of the World supposedly!!! It certainly isn’t the City with a Heart when it comes to Cancer Sufferers. People in Glasgow Don’t Fake Cancer....They Suffer from It. End of Story. Now who the hell is going to do something and quickly to alleviate their problems. It can be a Politician, It can

be a Personality, It can be a Sportsperson, or it can be a Street Sweeper. We don’t care who takes up the cudgel to fight for these people who are genuinely ill and have no means of fighting for themselves. Many of you may say “There are loads of Cancer support groups out there......What we all tend to forget is that, “ WE ARE ALL PAYING FOR THESE” as they are registered charities. There are loads of folk living beside us who have been declared “Long-Term” sick yet can still manage to do a day’s work and get their benefits because they are past masters at “Working the System”. We All know some of them, yet when it comes to genuine cases where an extra couple of bob could make a tremendous difference they are shunned away and left to fend for themselves. So come on All you politicians who are seeking our votes in the coming weeks.... Speak Up about what can be done for those suffering from genuine illnesses or even better Stand Up and be counted by your actions. Give these people a break,.” As If Cancer wasn’t Enough”.

NEW PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE OVER RIVER CLYDE SET FOR CONSTRUCTIONCLYDE Gateway has unveiled plans to construct a new pedestrian bridge that will span the River Clyde and link the communities of Dalmarnock and Shawfield. The bridge is an important part of proposals being developed to create a new National Business District in Shawfield as it will provide quick access to and from the new transport hub which is to be developed around Dalmarnock Station over the next three years. The construction of the bridge will half the walking time from the station to the National Business District to under 10 minutes. The National Business District will be the re-development of the area that is bounded by the south bank of the River Clyde, Shawfield Stadium and Glasgow Road in Rutherglen. The cost of the bridge has been set at

£4.75m of which £1.9m will be a contribution from the European Regional Development Fund. Ian Manson, the Chief Executive of Clyde Gateway said “The re-development of the Shawfield area is every bit as important as our work to deliver physical, social and economic change in the East End of Glasgow. There are big chunks of land in Shawfield that require substantial investment to remove contamination, and since day one of Clyde Gateway being established, delivering on this has been a priority.”“We see Shawfield, with its superb location on the south bank of the River Clyde, not far from the city centre or the historic burgh of Rutherglen, as an area of enormous potential. We want to establish a newly designated National Business District,

adjacent to the completed M74 Motorway, as a location more than capable of being the home to thousands of new jobs in years to come.”“The smart-bridge is part of a vision and strategy to deliver infrastructure and development within Shawfield and Dalmarnock. It is very pleasing to receive this additional funding through Europe, but we are also delighted and see it as highly significant that support is being given to something which is part of our medium and longer term efforts to create jobs and bring investment.” The work on the bridge is due to start in late 2012 with a completion date of mid 2013 which ties in with the completion of the £8m redevelopment of Dalmarnock Station and the transport hub.

Sizzling Suzie’s Spring SpreadsSchool holidays are here again. Trying to find new and imaginative ways to amuse and occupy a toddler without breaking the bank is exhausting. Taking him swimming today which is always a winner. The only thing about that is you are starving and knackered afterwards. I am going to put a casserole in the oven on the timer to cook whilst we are out. I love doing this as you come in to a warm kitchen that smells fan-tastic. Because you did all the preparation in advance you feel as though it has been done for you. And since you either washed up or loaded the dishwasher the place doesn’t look like a war zone either. I also peel and quarter my totties and bring to the boil before turning them off to sit on the hob until we get back. They semi cook and you only have to re-boil them for 5 min to finish them off. Just enough time to unpack the wet cossies and towels.

Beef and Tomato Hotpot

1-2lb of stewing steakPlain seasoned flour for dust-ing.2 onions sliced2 carrots peeled and chopped into 1 inch pieces1 small turnip chopped into 1 inch pieces2 cans of plum tomatoes1 clove of garlic crushed1 beef stock cube.Salt and pepper1tsp of sugar.2tbs oil.

Put the seasoned flour in a bag and shake in the meat to fully coat each piece. Heat the oil in the casserole dish and fry of the meat in batches. Allow the meat to get very brown. Set meat aside. Add the garlic, carrots, turnip and onions to the pan and using a wooden spoon scrape of the stuck pieces on bottom. Add the tomatoes, meat and sugar. Make up the stock cube with a pint of water and add this to pan. Bring to the boil, check sea-soning and cover with a tight lid. Put into a moderate oven 170c and set timer to switch oven off in 2 hours.

Serve with the mashed totties to soak up all the rich gravy.

Caramel Apple Betty

If you are baking your own from scratch blind bake the pastry base in a pie dish. Fry off you’re apples in half the caramel and a knob of butter. Add a squeeze of lemon to the apple to stop it browning and discolouring. Pour the apple into the pastry case and pour over remaining caramel. Sprinkle generously with the crumble topping and bake in a hot oven 180c for 25-30 min until golden brown , crunchy and bubbling. Serve with ice cold ice cream.

It’s all “Fair” at the NurseryPARKHEAD Nursery in Crail Street had its very first Spring Fair last Saturday. Great fun was had by all, with the adults and children browsing and buying from the variety of different stalls. The kids were able to get their faces painted and they re-ally enjoyed the healthy option of fruit kebabs. The Tea room as always was busy letting the adults take a rest while the kids got some free time from nursery. The raf-fle was a wonderful result for some but unfortunately not for others as the “winners” exam-ined just what they had won. Rhona Stewart of the Nursery would like to say a big thank you to staff of the nursery, relatives of the children and local shops who help make the Spring Fair a great success.

St Phillips Presentation to ArchbishopARCHBISHOP Mario Conti visited the parish of St Phillips in Ruchazie recently to conduct a Confirmation service for some of the Primary 6-7 youngsters of the church and whilst he was there the parish priest Joseph Sullivan had a surprise for him, as it could be the last time the Archbishop takes a service in the parish, (rumour has it that he may decide to retire shortly). To commemorate the visit Father Joe presented the Archbishop with an Icon of St John Ogilvie, and this was deemed fitting

as the career path of both men are very similar. As Father Joe explained, “St John Ogilvie came from the north-east, formed as

a priest on the continent and ended his eventful life in Glasgow. When you see that the Archbishop has basically followed the same path (Apart from the hanging at Glasgow Cross which was the fate of John Ogilvie), it was felt that an Icon should be commissioned and this was duly undertaken by the parish Iconographer, Blazena Djarikova, a native of Poland who has settled in Ruchazie and has already made a beautiful icon of St Phillip for the church. Archbishop Conti was delighted by the gesture and thanked everyone connected with St Phillips.

Local Companies –“Meet The Buyer”Many companies in the east end took time out last week to visit the “Meet The Buyer” event organised by Glasgow Business Portal in relationship to the Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2014. Companies who are registered on the Business Profile Directory of the Portal are eligible to tender and try to secure work relating to the up-coming Commonwealth Games. The object of the exercise at Celtic Park last week was to form a link between the larger companies and those who may not be as big but could certainly do a worthwhile job as sub-contractors. Speaking to some of these smaller companies the Re-Gen got the impression that there is a distinct lack of communication between those who are vying for

work and those who already have obtained work. Some proprietors of these smaller companies felt that the Business Portal staff were fobbing them off and overall felt the event was a “Pat on the Back” type exercise.

We are sure that this was not the intended image that the Business Portal were trying to portray but unfortunately that is the way it came across to many of the smaller business owners. Perhaps it needs a little re-think before the next event.

Dalmarnock Pupils visit TumbletownPUPILS from Dalmarnock Primary school took advantage of a special invitation last week when the management of the Tumbletown Soft Play Centre asked them along to sample the fun and activities on offer at the Bridgeton venue. Head Teacher Nancy Clooney and some of the staff supervised as the youngsters as they had great fun in the Ball Pool and Multi-Story Play Frame area. This was an excellent gesture by Tumbletown and the kids really appreciated it.

Vote Yes For TollcrossPICTURED here are some of the staff from Tollcross Housing Association who attended Carmyle Community Centre last Saturday with the roadshow which was aimed at promoting the virtues of local tenants transferring their tenancy from GHA to the local Tollcross Housing Association. In the east end area recently there has been an influx of tenants who have transferred from the GHA to their local Housing Associations e.g. Milnbank, Calvay, Easthall and Blairtummock and they are delighted with their new landlords. The reputation that Tollcross Housing Association has built up over the past

few years for caring about their tenants hopefully will stand them in good stead when the ballot takes place. The fact that if the transfer goes through innTollcross HA’s favour it will mean that there will be local control by local people making

decisions that relate to local issues. If the past year is anything to go by, the fantastic work at Corbett Street and the planned work at Braidfauld House site, are only the beginning of a new improving Tollcross.

Playbusters Puppets Get the Message AcrossIN an very innovative manner Playbusters, (The Excellent Project based in Parkhead), invited local children along to their new premises in Wellpark Community Centre in McIntosh Street Dennistoun. The children and many adults were there to see a puppet show with a difference and it certainly struck a chord with the locals. The Playbuster Puppets were targeting Litter and Anti-Social behaviour and the play they put on certainly grabbed the audience’s attention with the kids actually picking up litter at the end of the show. Local Councillor Frank Docherty was very impressed with the overall performance and the way the message was put across. He told the Re-Gen, “Playbusters are certainly engaging with the local communities in the area and they are coming up with very novel ways

of promoting the extremely important message of taking an interest in our own community. The way these kids picked up on what the project was trying to get across was wonderful and with the encouragement of their parents it certainly augurs well for the future.” Project Leader Margaret Layden is delighted with the response the project has received since taking over the hall and re-iterates that all the local kids are welcome to pop in and see some of the excellent things that are ongoing.

Man Lies Dead on Easterhouse Bus for 5 HoursA passenger on a 46 Bus from Easterhouse to Castlemilk lay dead for around 5 hours without anyone even noticing. This tragedy occurred last Saturday after the man boarded the bus in Easterhouse. Although it is not appearing to be a suspicious death it is unbelievable that anyone could lie dead on a public transport vehicle for five hours without being discovered. What was the driver doing at the end of each journey? Were there any ticket Inspectors on duty on that run last Saturday? Were any members of the public concerned about the deceased passenger? The man believed to be around 30-40 years old was eventually discovered at the Easterhouse end of the journey around

3.30pm after boarding the bus at 10.00am. He was on the floor wedged between two seats as the bus journeyed between Easterhouse and Castlemilk on FOUR occasions, yet No One even noticed him. The matter is now part of an ongoing investigation and our thoughts are with the family and friends of the deceased.

A major month-long crime crackdown in the east end of Glasgow, aimed at violent criminals, gangs and serious and organised crime groups, got underway on Friday 1 April 2011. And on the first day of Operation Neptune, the first Strathclyde Police initiative to focus on a single division in such a detailed way, 10 people were arrested and 20 individuals reported for an array of crimes. Throughout the east end of the city, more than 450 people were stopped and searched for weapons, drugs and alcohol, around 160 cars were stopped and 55 visits to licensed premises were made, checking for offences including drug dealing and the sale of alcohol to under-18s. Superintendent Eddie Smith said, “ Operation Neptune is the culmination of months of intelligence work and as well as stamping out violence and disrupting organised crime, the planned policing activities will go a

long way to reassuring the public and making local communities feel safer.“There will be a significant increase in the number of police patrols and the message to the criminal fraternity is that there will be no hiding place and we will catch you.”We are looking to prevent violence, whether it be domestic abuse, alcohol-fuelled attacks or assaults, gang fights and serious organised crime. The number of stop searches will be stepped up and we will be targeting specific premises and known hot spots for violence and anti-social behaviour.” In two police operations on Friday, a 33-year-old man was arrested in Tollcross Road in connection with alleged firearms offences, and a 55-year-old man was reported to the Procurator Fiscal after his vehicle was stopped at a road check in Shettleston, with police finding a quantity of controlled drugs with an estimated street value of £540.

CRIME CRACKDOWN

FAIRER AND TOUGHERFREE Prescriptions and a fourth year of the Council Tax freeze. These are just two of the SNP promises that became facts at the start of April. The free bus pass scheme for pensioners was also extended to include disabled veterans as well. And on top of that this year once again there are no rates for small businesses. So although Westminster has treated Scotland harshly, the SNP has done its best to protect those who are most vulnerable. The SNP also supports the YES campaign in the Alternative Vote Referendum and I took part in the launch at the STUC - though it is only a very small improvement in how we elect MPs. As I have been knocking doors and speaking to voters, crime and the fear of crime are high on folk’s agenda. It is good that the SNP has delivered 1,000 extra police on the streets. We need to be tough on crime and extra police is the best way to nip crime in the bud. Should we be locking more people up in prison? I reckon

prison is far too cushy an option for many. And it is very expensive for you and me as taxpayers as we have to pay over £30,000 per prisoner per year to molly-coddle them! We need something tougher than prison to deter would be criminals. Clearly murderers and other serious offenders need to be locked up for a long time for the protection of society. But my belief is that tough community punishment is the way to deal with shoplifters and other petty criminals. They should be clearing the snow in winter and fixing the roads in summer – not sitting in jail at great expense to you and me. Community punishment means the criminals have to pay back to society rather

than society paying even more to look after them. So for the small time criminals who are little danger to the public, I certainly support community punishment rather than prison.

A Women’s Awareness Roadshow, providing information about domestic violence and door-step crime, will be held in Cranhill on Tuesday 12 April, between 10.30 and 2pm. The Strathclyde Police-run event is being held in the

St Maria Goretti Church Hall, Cranhill. Strathclyde Police and partner agencies will be available for advice and information for women of all ages.

DETECTIVES in Shettleston are currently investigating a report of a man being assaulted in the Carmyle area on Saturday (2nd April). Around 11.00am, police were called to a report that a 21-year-old man had been injured in a grassy area between Liddle Street and Foxley Street, Carmyle. Emergency Services attended and the man was taken to the Glasgow Royal Infirmary for treatment for lacerations to his face and head. His injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

Extensive inquiries are underway and officers have been carrying out a full search of the area in an effort to find out what has happened and how the man came about his injuries. Detective Constable Morag Gibson from Shettleston CID said: “We believe this man suffered a violent attack and we are trying to establish exactly how it happened. The grassy area where we believe the assault took place is surrounded by residential properties with footpaths leading off it and I

feel sure that someone in the local community will have seen or heard something. I know some people can be reluctant to speak to police but I would urge anyone with any knowledge or information to contact us. Your information could be vital in helping us trace whoever is responsible for this attack.” Anyone with information is asked to contact CID at Shettleston Police Office on telephone number 0141 532 4800. Alternatively, please call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 where information can be given anonymously.

TRANSFORMING SPRINGBOIGIT’S EXACTLY ten years since the modernisation programme in Springboig began and as the scaffolding comes down on the latest phase of the works, residents in the area are appreciating the transformation continuing to take place in their neighbourhood. The first of the homes in Springboig Phase 5 have now been completed by the contractor, Ailsa Builders. These latest works use an insulated panel and render system to replace the houses’ original, corroding steel plates. Ground conditions ruled out the brick treatment used in previous phases - and also held up the programme by over two years. This new insulated cladding system not only looks fantastic but also performs to the highest level. A pilot project last year

tested its effectiveness, with the conclusion that it not only solved the problem of the steel plates but also significantly improved the heat and fuel efficiency of the homes. Residents in the pilot homes were very happy to report savings in their fuel bills during our worst winter for many years. Around 80 homes will be improved in this current phase, which is scheduled to complete by the end of this year. Phase 6, which includes 90 homes, will follow on next year and after this, a final push will aim to pick up any homes omitted, for various reasons, from earlier phases.

“Residents in the pilot homes were very happy to report savings in their

fuel bills during our worst winter for many years.”

PETTIGREW AND BALINTORE STREET REGENERATION CONTINUESTHE regeneration of the Pettigrew Street and Balintore Street area of Shettleston took a major step forward at the start of 2011 when a new 36 home development went on site. The new amenity homes for older tenants are the first phase of a development on the site of the former GHA inter-war tenements. They have been designed with the aim of making life easier for residents as their needs change over time. The development will also include a number of homes built to full wheelchair standard. The homes will have excellent energy saving features including a system called ‘Whole House Heat Recovery Ventilation’ as well as generous insulation and triple glazed windows. A very attractive feature of the development will be a well designed common courtyard, planned to help foster good relationships and community spirit amongst the new neighbours. The homes will be built using a

modern long-panel construction method. This means that the majority of the construction will be done at the contractor’s (CCG), state-of-the-art facility in Cambuslang, before being transported to the site in 16m long panels for assembly. By constructing large parts of the build indoors in a quality-controlled environment, a high standard of workmanship is ensured. It is expected that the homes will be complete by March 2012

Milnbank Housing Association based in Ballindalloch Drive Dennistoun, was delighted to receive two pieces of good news recently. Firstly, as we reported in the last edition of the Re- GEN, 75% of tenants who voted in the recent ballot held in February, were in favour of transferring their tenancy to Milnbank Housing Association, from Glasgow Housing Association under the Second Stage Transfer process. The other good news story for the Association relates to an award of £207 000 from the Climate Challenge Fund to help support its environmental and carbon reduction programmes.

Good News From Milnbank Housing Association

In relation to the stock transfer ballot, John O’Donnell Chair of Milnbank HA told the Re-Gen. “We are delighted with the result and appreciate the efforts of everyone who helped make this happen. In particular, I would like to thank our Committee and especially the Local Housing Office Committee Members, for their resolve in seeing through what has been a long and sometimes difficult process. We are now fully focussed on making sure we justify the faith placed in us by the tenants who voted to transfer to Milnbank HA”.

The Association is now working with Glasgow Housing Association in order to complete the stock transfer by the end of May.

Josephine Buchanan“The area has been transformed by

Milnbank HA”

The award from the Climate Challenge Fund is the fourth largest in the whole of Scotland and the largest received by any organisation in Glasgow. It will help support a range of exciting initiatives that include:

Continuing the programme of physical measures to cut carbon emissions,

save energy and reduce fuel poverty amongst local residents.

CCF funding will also encourage cycling in the area through creating safe cycling tracks in the

Dennistoun area for people of all ages. In addition, Milnbank Housing Association will

develop garden & allotment schemes in Alexandra Park and work with pupils from Haghill Park

Primary School to assist in this activity. Finally, the Association has received funding to promote the use of carbon footprint tools

that will allow local organisations and individual households to make the kinds of small

behavioural changes that collectively lead to large savings in carbon emissions.

BIG FELLA THANKS

THE Nation will be glued to their television sets at around quarter past four this Saturday as forty brave horses and jockeys take off for the running of the 2011 John Smith Aintree Grand National. The bookies

will have extra staff on hand to cater for the influx of one a year punters who faithfully pick their favourites to put on that few bob hoping that they have at last picked a winner. Last year saw BBC Sports Personality of the year Tony

McCoy eventually triumph as he rode one of the favourites Don’t Push It first past the post. McCoy and his horse are competing again this year but many of you will take a chance on the Scottish horse Silver By Nature, owned by

St Johnstone Chairman G.S Brown which at the time of writing is around 16-1 in the betting. Sir Alex Ferguson has What A Friend running and it will be a best friend for those of you who back it (if it wins).

HELLO BUD

It may be that there will be a massive pile up like the year Fionavon won the race but if you believe that then just post your cash to me. The horse I will be taking a chance on this year will be the Nigel Twiston Davis mount Hello Bud at the odds of around 25-1 and although it is 13 years old it has tremendous experience over obstacles and

carries 1lb less than it did when finishing 5th last year. Karen in the office fancies Oscar Time at 12-1 and Paula tips Bluesea Cracker at 16-1. No matter what you pick we hope it wins for you and remember you can use the £1-00 Free Bet voucher in this paper so that it doesn’t affect your pocket. Best Of Luck Everyone.

Dear Tom,Thank you for all the coverage you have given the North East Carpet Bowls League during the winter months (results, placings, winners/runners-up). With the outdoor season coming up, I will furnish you with a syllabus for the year when they are available from Shettleston Bowling Club.Yours in Sport, Ian Colligan, Secretary, North East Carpet Bowls League.

Hello Tom,The article on the club’s 30th Anniversary (North February issue) was a great piece. Very well done for all your time and work on this. It is very much appreciated. I have posted copies out to all the relevant coaches, and the feedback/comments so far have all been impressed by the artcile. Thanks again. Best wishes. Ricky Spinelli, West Park United Boys’ Club.

Hi Tom,Excellent coverage in the last edition. The “Around the Clubs” feature was fi rst class, and the bonus of match reports was well received by the lads. Thanks for that. Carry on the excellent coverage.Best Regards, Stuart Rae, Under-21 Broomhouse Boys’ Club Newsletter Editor.

GLASGOW CITY F.C. 8, CELTIC 0. HOLDERS Celtic crashed out of the Premier League Cup at Pe-tershill Park. City pressure paid off when Leanne Ross converted a penalty kick for handball, and Rachel Cor-sie made it 2-0, followed by a third on half-time from Emma Mitchell.International full-back Mitchell struck twice after the interval to complete an excellent hat-trick, and Lisa Evans crashed home a sixth goal. Jane Ross thundered in a superb 25 yard free kick, and Rachel Corsie made it 8-0. GLASGOW CITY F.C. 8, INVER-NESS 0. CHAMPIONS Glasgow City made a tremendous start to the Scottish Premier League campaign at Petershill Park. Visitors’ goalkeeper Kim Jappy had to stop a certain goal inside sixty seconds, but she was pow-erless when Jane Ross netted after Christie Murray released Lisa Evans for the opener after 7 minutes. The same player put City further ahead, and before half-time Inver-ness conceded a third scored by Leanne Ross. The champions waited 17 min-utes into the second half for an-other goal, but it arrived when full-back Emma Mitchell powered home an Emma Fernon cross. Summer signing Christie Murray fi nally opened her account with a brilliant free kick. Jappy was left helpless by a half volley from Lauren McMurchie, and it was seventh heaven for City after Emma Fernon netted a Jane Ross pass. Lisa Evans wrapped up a comfortable after-noon in 85 minutes following link-up play between substitute Eilish McSorley and Jane Ross. WOLVES BOYS’ CLUB 3, BLAIR THISTLE 2. THREE goals within 20 minutes gave Wolves Under-16 team the per-fect start in this Central Region Cup semi-fi nal at Hamilton. This-tle replied in a determined fi ght-back, but Wolves go through to play Cambusnethan Talbot in the fi nal at Ocilview, Stenhousemuir, in May. Talbot have put together an unbeaten nine-game run, and knocked out highly-fancied Kilsyth Athletic in the other semi-fi nal. BAILLIESTON JUNIORS 4, GAIRDOCH UNITED 1. FIRST half goals from Fraser and Martin gave Ton the upper hand in the Central League Cup semi-fi nals. Robertson fi red home a third, but Gairdoch responded and also missed a penalty kick. Two min-utes from time, Fraser brilliantly added No 4. VALE OF CLYDE F.C. 2, GIR-VAN 0. VALE moved up two places in the league at the ex-pense of their title-chasing visi-tors. Jay Lang made no mistake with a 52nd minute penalty kick, and Fraser Team made sure all three points would remain at Toll-cross with the clincher three min-utes into injury time. SOUTH CAMLACHIE YOUTH PROJECT 3, BROOMHOUSE BOYS’ CLUB 3. PENALTY Kicks were required to settle this Golden Goals Trophy clash at Greenfi eld. Broomhouse twice took a fi rst half lead - through Darren Hogan and David Quinn - but were pegged back. Chris Neilly crashed home a free kick only to see SCYP take the match straight into penalties after 90 minutes. Both teams

scored and missed with their reg-ulation fi ve, and House ‘keeper Sean Patrick made two saves, but it wasn’t enough to stop Cam-lachie going through 4-3. BROOMHOUSE BOYS’ CLUB 4, BONNYTON THISTLE 0.THE pair had not met since Jags dumped House out of the Scottish Cup in November. There would be no repeat at Greenfi eld. Dar-ryl McKernan’s reverse pass was netted by David Quinn in 9 min-utes, and a contender for goal of the season followed after 18 minutes. The power and precision of a Chris Neilly 30 yard free kick was astonishing, and in keeping with a series of deadball strikes recently. Bonnyton were given a chance to get back into the match after a handball decision against Craig Scott, but ‘keeper Sean Patrick was again in superb form and saved the spot kick. Towards half-time David Quinn and Dar-ryl McKernan raised the scoreline to 4-0. Broomhouse continued to take the match to Thistle, and Chris Neilly twice went close. GLASGOW CITY F.C. 0, GLAS-GOW GIRLS F.C. 3. UNDER-15 Girls were more than convincing league winners at Nethercraigs. Only poor fi nishing prevented City from conceding more goals. On target were Amy Allan, Karen Baillie and Leigh Ferrol. KILPATRICK 2, WELLHOUSE BOYS’ CLUB 1. A late goal hand-ed House their second league defeat this season. Goalkeeper Steven Slane had kept out a net-bound shot, but a home forward reacted to net the rebound in 85 minute . Earlier, Wellhouse were impressive and Tommy Porter rat-tled the bar from 30 yards. The same player had better luck 10 minutes with a low free kick. The visitors’ back fi ve were in excel-lent form, but could do nothing when a Gowdie forward was al-lowed clear - amid claims he was offside at least fi ve yards - and drill home the equaliser. RENFREW F.C. 1, BAILLIES-TON JUNIORS 1. FREW goal-keeper Daniel McLeay was the hero with three brilliant saves in a penalty shoot-out to send the homesters into the quarter-fi nals of the Golden Goals Trophy. VALE OF CLYDE 0, ST ANTHO-NY 3. TWO goals in a minute helped Ants clinch victory in the D and D Programmes Central League Cup fi rst round clash at Tollcross. Jamie Docherty netted in 11 minutes. Gary Madden add-ed a second, and Ross Cumming ended the cup-tie sixty seconds later. ALL SAINTS 1, THE CELTIC

BOYS’ CLUB 3. GOALS from Jack Marriott, Darren Sneddon and James Bradshaw gave Celt-ic victory in the Central Regional Cup quarter-fi nals.CAMBUSNETHAN MINERS 1, THE CELTIC BOYS’ CLUB 2. CELTS Under-21 won a place in Regional Cup fi nal thanks to goals from Jack Marriott and Greg Steele. HUTCHISON VALE 0, GLAS-GOW CITY 5. CITY created 37 chances - 18 of them in the fi rst half - on a terrible playing sur-face. Lauren McMurchie opened the scoring from a Leanne Ross pass, and the same player add-ed a second after Ross hit the bar. With a minute Jane Ross grabbed a third, and Rachie Cor-sie No 4 from an Evans cross. McMurchie completed her hat-trick from a cut-back. HAMILTON 1, CELTIC 1. THE visitors opened their Scottish Womens Premier League cam-paign with a goal from Maddy Fulton. Sarah Crilly scored for Accies. TOWER HEARTS 0, THE CELTIC BOYS’ CLUB 2. CELTS captured another big Premier Division scalp in the Scottish Un-der-21 Challenge Cup semi-fi nal at Greenfi eld Park, Shettleston. Simon Marriott deservedly put them into a fi rst half lead, and Greg Steele headed the second past Black. Viola should have added a third but over-ran the ball with only the goalie to beat. Celtic now play record holders, Campsie Black Watch, who beat Harmony Row 3-1 in the other semi-fi nal at Dunterlie Park. WELLHOUSE BOYS’ CLUB 4, LOCHGILPHEAD 1. THE Under-16s conceded a goal after 10 minutes. Five minutes later, Stevie Kerr had a penalty kick partially saved but followed up to net the rebound. Jamie Halliday made it 2-1 before the interval. An own goal and another Stevie Kerr strike put House in easy street, and they hit the bar numer-ous occasions. Man of the Match - Tommy Porter. GLASGOW CITY F.C. 1, GLAS-GOW GIRLS F.C. 5. AN excel-lent Under-15 League Cup Sec-tion win for the visitors. Scorers: Charmaine McGuire (2), Ainsley Gilmour, Laura Gallen and a Tri-alist. GLASGOW GIRLS F.C. Un-der-17 held Hamilton to a 3-3 draw in the League Cup. Scorers: Lauren Coleman (2) and Shan-non McManus. Meanwhile, the Seniors defeated Milton Rovers thanks to goals from Stephanie Brophy, Sarah Killeen, Mairade MacRae and and Niamh Breslin.

Heading in the opposite direction alongside table-toppers Carmyle are pro-moted Whitevale, Belvidere, Riddrie and St Rollox.
