Baillieston Tenant Hugh Boyle receives congratulations from GHA Chairperson Gordon Sloan

GHA tenants have followed in the footsteps of Team GB stars Mo Farah and Jessica Ennis – by winning gold medals at a special Olympics for older people. Hun-dreds of tenants from GHA shel-tered housing complexes across the city took part in the Summer of Sport. The finals were held at the SECC as part of the World Congress on Active Ageing exhibition. The GHA Olympic events included gi-ant jenga, carpet bowls, curling, Frisbee and indoor golf. Hugh Boyle, 69, from Sandford Gardens Sheltered Housing Complex in Baillieston grabbed the limelight with two silver medals and a gold. Hugh said: “It was great fun

and everyone really enjoyed tak-ing part. I was really surprised to win three medals – especially as I’ve never previously played any of the games before. “It’s been a brilliant event as everyone got into the spirit of the games in their complexes.” Sprightly 101-year-old Bill Law-son, a tenant at Gallowhill Shel-tered Housing Complex in Car-munnock, loved taking part in the qualifiers.Bill, a former member of the Springburn Harriers who puts his longevity down to a bot-tle of Belhaven Best every day, said: “It’s nice to see everyone getting involved. “It’s all good because it helps us keep active. I could try the 100m – but they

might have to give me a 99-me-tre start!” GHA’s partners in the programme, Glasgow Life, pro-vided coaching and equipment for the athletes – with competi-tion between sheltered housing complexes taking place through-out July. As well as the physi-cal activity, there was a chance for tenants to give their brains a workout with a quiz, table games and an art competition. Margaret Moore, GHA’s Assistant Director of Community Partnership, said: “The games were popular in the complexes and tenants really en-joyed themselves. “At the same time it really brought people to-gether and increased their physi-cal activity.”

Margaret Curran MP and Frank McAveety MSP high-light the proposed changes to vital community lifelineMargaret Curran and Frank McAveety visited Baillieston post office at the weekend to congratulate Mark Adrian and his staff on the service run from and the success of Baillieston Post Office. They know how valued the local post office is to the people of Baillieston. This is great news in Baillieston but legislation recently passed in the House of Commons will mean the privatisation of Royal Mail. This leads to doubts over the future of the Post Office network which can no longer be guaranteed in the years to come. Margaret who spoke in the debate made clear that the legislation is a big mistake and is not supported by the public. Margaret and Frank took the opportunity to make passing shoppers aware of the change to legislation and asked for them to pledge the support by signing a petition. Barlanark Post Office is currently for sale and unless a buyer is found its fate remains uncertain. Margaret Curran says “

Urban Post Offices often face different challenges from those in rural communities, they too deal with isolation and represent a lifeline to their communities. We need to take action now to ensure that we do not end up in a situation on which a large retailer steps in and takes over the service. An elderly

person living in Barlanark may be unable to get to any of the large retailers in the community. A single mother with 3 children and without a car relies on local services that the Post Office provides. This legislation is a forerunner of many Post Office closures because we are not taking the necessary

steps to protect the service.”Frank McAveety says “ Privatisation of the Royal Mail has the long term threat to jobs and services at a local level. I will be working with Margaret to ensure the voices of the east end are heard and all the local post offices are protected”.

AMAZING WINS FOR GLASGOW DENTAL PRACTICE AT TOP UK INDUSTRY AWARDS

The team at Spring Grove Clinic in Barrachnie Road Garrowhill is celebrating the fantastic achievement of winning two of the top UK Private Dentistry Awards of 2010, namely Practice of the Year and Best Patient Care. It was also awarded runner up in Best Community Charity Project and Outstanding Individual of the Year along with being shortlisted for Most Attractive Practice and Best Team. Winning the Practice of the Year and Best Patient Care Awards is a great endorsement of the Spring Grove Clinic teams’ commitment to providing affordable, value for money, community based, professional family oral and dental health care, advice, support and treatment to an exceptionally high standard. The award winning practice prides itself on its patient focussed approach which is always courteous, efficient and friendly, set within surroundings that are luxurious, comfortable and welcoming. Heading up the clinical team is Dr David Cunningham who established his practice in Garrowhill over 14 years ago. Winning these two Awards recognises his firmly held belief that a community based dental practice, where patient relationships and trust are key, using the latest dental technology,

can provide the same level of treatment options, care and surroundings as a large city centre based dental practice. Commenting, David Cunningham said, “The team has worked incredibly hard to make Spring Grove Clinic a fantastic place for our patients. I am delighted that our efforts have been recognised by the top UK industry professionals.” “My focus has always been to provide excellent patient care with the very best dental advice and treatment. I believe in spending time with my patients, fully explaining preventative and treatment options to them and supporting them as they choose their treatment plans. I am very grateful to our patients for their fantastic comments in support of our Awards application.” At the Awards presentation, the Spring Grove Clinic team were commended for excellence across all of the categories, for the state of the art facility, and being a team who strive to provide excellent patient care. Its’ efforts in raising funds to support Yorkhill Children’s Hospital ECMO Unit won the runner-up award for Best Community Charity Project. Spring Grove Clinic is a leader in providing dental implants, cosmetic dentistry, invisible braces, tooth whitening and family dentistry.

McAveety Slams SNP Games Funding DecisionGlasgow Shettleston MSP Frank McAveety has hit out at a decision by Scottish Enterprise to slash Commonwealth Games legacy funding by almost half. Clyde Gateway, the body responsible for regenerating the East End of Glasgow, has been hit with a 46% cut in funding for urban regeneration in 2011/2012. The agency has been told it will share around £6.8 million with five other agencies, instead of the £7 million it was initially promised. Frank said: “The Enterprise Minister seems to be more interested in facilitating meetings for his friend the Education Minister, who he wants to succeed him as an MSP than he is in the well being of the people of the East End. At this very moment he should be pulling a meeting together with Scottish Enterprise to demand that they withdraw this ridiculous proposal and get around the table with all the partners to fulfil the promises made.”Frank added: “Unlike any other renewal programme in the country commitments were made to ensure that Glasgow could make the best of the opportunities for the Games and regeneration investment. There is no better case for having an impact on Scotland’s economic performance and I am demanding an urgent meeting with the Scottish Government to urge them to ensure Scottish Enterprise withdrawal the proposal to make a massive cut in their previous commitments to the area.”

Cadets Camp on British LandThe Easterhouse Army Cadets based in St George’s and St Peters church hall in Boyn-die Street have just returned from camp thankful that Renia Tysler (Manager of Shandwick Square Shopping Centre) re-membered to include them in her report to British Land, who oversee the Centre in Bogbain Road Easterhouse. British Land have for the past couple of years sponsored the troop as they set out for their an-nual camp and this year was no different as the company handed over the grand total of £960.00 to twelve young cadets at a presentation cere-mony in the popular Shopping

Centre recently. British Land are tremendous benefactors within the Easterhouse area and many groups and projects have every reason to be grate-

ful for their generosity. Well done the staff at Shandwick Square and of course those terrific people at British Land, keep up the good work.

GLASGOW Community & Safety Services’ (GCSS) new Eastgate HQ was officially opened by Councillor Gordon Matheson, Leader of Glasgow City Council last week.

A vital part of the first phase of the Clyde Gateway regeneration project, the new glass fronted HQ, based on London Road, will have capacity for around 500 staff. Formed in October 2006, GCSS, jointly owned by Glasgow City Council and Strathclyde Police, is tasked with responding to all aspects of antisocial behaviour.

The 61,859 sq ft building will enable 22 specialist services to be based in one building over four floors. Services include: Hot spot intervention teams; Early and effective intervention; Community payback orders; Graffiti removal; ASSIST (Advocacy, Support, Safety Information Services Together) CCTV services; Neighbourhood improvement and enforcement; and Offender management.

Through the Community Payback programme, clients using the service

manufactured the eye-catching tables and chairs in the Eastgate HQ atrium as well as the boardroom table. Using GCSS workshops, the offenders are now producing furniture for other council’s services with the long term aim of producing it commercially in future.

Councillor Gordon Matheson, Leader of Glasgow City Council, said: “This fantastic new facility is a wonderful base for tackling crime and antisocial behaviour in Glasgow. “Eastgate will clearly allow the various

services based here to work together better than ever as they continue to carry out their vital role in tackling antisocial behaviour throughout the city. “Antisocial behaviour, crime and disorder cover a range of actions - from dropping litter, vandalism and dumping rubbish to petty assault, intimidation or assault.

“By concentrating servicesin Eastgate, resources

can be directed to areas

with the greatest need and enables better partnership working.” Phil Walker, managing director, GCSS, said: “Prevention is the first level of engagement

to divert those at risk of becoming involved in crime and antisocial behaviour. We operate in the belief that it is better to prevent rather than react to an issue. “This new facility will not only enable

better partnership working between our services and avoid duplication of provision, but also make us more visible in the communities we serve.

“We have developed a range of services and approaches that work with groups and individuals - particularly young adults and children - that prevent and direct them away from antisocial behaviour and crime and encourage them into positive, constructive lifestyles.”“I’m certain that our new base in Eastgate will see our services continue to flourish as we tackle antisocial behaviour across the city.”

Your emotions are confusing you this week and it is not a time to make concrete decisions! There is someone around you who could be trying to hide something from you but not for long, as it comes to the fore and could leave you reeling from the reality of what you have heard, this revelation allows you to change your attitude and to push forward with plans you had on the back burner.

As the sun moves into your sister sign of Virgo on the 24th you feel a real buzz of excitement around and you get on top of all the small details that have been holding you back! There may be strong opposition from people surrounding you now but you will use you straight talking, no nonsense approach and tell them what you really think!

It is a month to listen to those older and wiser, you have been toying with the idea of a career change for a while now, so what is holding you back? Some of you may hear news from overseas which will bring a flutter to your heart and a smile on your face. From the 24th you will take that overdue look at your life and make assessments on how to move forward.

Too many road’s too many choices, this month brings in change and courage to make decisions which will affect your own personal happiness. Long term financial goals and future stability emotional are your main objectives, your commutative skills are stronger than they have been for a long time so use this time wisely and clear some space.

As the Sun left your sign on the 24th you have felt a shift in energy patterns around you and it almost feels like a new year beginning and a new you. Time to make long term plans for the next 12 months starting with your finances, get them in order now and it will stand you in good stead for the rest of the year. Romantically remember on word “partnership” and if you can incorporate this into your love life then this too will be a success!

The sun enters your sign on the 24th of August and you feel it like a breath of fresh air, a lighter and more positive feeling is yours now, however with Neptune meeting the sun in your sign you have to stick to facts and fantasy might try to creep in, try to keep it real.

A situation around you may be revealed with startling clarity around the work area of your life and it may require balance on your part to help you asses this revelation, however remember the Universe always has a plan and new places and people may be just what you need!

From the mouths of babes, listen carefully to the young people around you as you may be surprised! Your emotional life has been going well of late and things continue on the same thread however remember that the grass is not always greener on the other side and actions speak louder than words!

Facing reality is sometimes difficult but when we face up to our situations then we are able to do something to correct unwanted behaviours, the work front has been trying your patients of late but there are new avenues and contracts or legal papers to be dealt with this month. With Mars move into Scorpio just tread carefully and remember diplomacy.

One thing a Capricorn does not like, and it is drama, will this month you better be prepared as drama is coming an you are the one who will need to deal with it and its results, you are a private person and the fact that all this drama is in public view may cause you stress, try to keep calm and be diplomatic and use that sense of humour to get you through!

Fact rather than fiction are the key words and actions for you this month and if you can express yourself in an open and honest way without elaboration then it will be a productive month, it is also a good time to allow your fantasies or artistic creativities free!

There is an air of putting a difficult situation behind you, if you are strong and determined new opportunities to learn for the future will appear in your direction, wither it is work or college. Education or new learning is strongly favoured this month so don’t be frightened to try new things, you may even enjoy it, try to put relationships back in order too.

Glasgow’s leading independent funeral directors Anderson Maguire have just opened another funeral home in the East End. Located at 658 Alexandra Parade, close to the Royal Infirmary. the new facility bridges the gap between the firm’s funeral homes in Springburn Way and Shettleston Road. “We have a large number of families in the Garngad, Townhead and Riddrie areas who use the company when they have a bereavement and this will be more convenient for them” said Angela Maguire, part of the management team at Anderson Maguire’s head office. ”More families than ever are now using our company. They recognise that we offer to very high level of personal service at a very moderate cost, something which is very important to families especially in the current economic climate” said Angela

The Alexandra Funeral Home is the fourth facility the company has opened in the last 3 years with others currently being planned. “As a family business we are focused on providing the best care and attention to families at a difficult time. We have invested continually in everything from staff training to our top of the range Jaguar hearses and limousines” said Angela, the next generation now involved in the running this family concern. ”We now have ten locations throughout the city all providing compassionate assistance to families on a local basis. We take care of absolutely everything from contacting the clergy or officiant, arranging the crematorium or cemetery, inserting paper notices right through to organising the catering and all at a moderate cost”

To help enhance the level of personal attention on offer at their East End funeral homes Anderson Maguire has appointed Tollcross man Christopher Bradley as the funeral director dedicated to working across the three funeral homes. Christopher who has been based at the company’s head office for the past couple of years is a well known face in the East End. Reared on Tollcross Road he attended Wellshot Primary school before going on to Eastbank Academy. Says Christopher “I learned a lot about people and how to look after folk when I worked at one of the East End’s best known establishments Honest Johns on Braidfauld Street. Even in a very simple way I learned things there which have stood me in good stead during my life and which are invaluable now.” For immediate help call 0141 423 4400 at any hour.

A new east end landmark, the Thenue homes and offices

NEW housing for the east end has been officially unveiled thanks to an £11 million investment by The-nue Housing. The new homes have been cre-ated in a landmark five-storey building which has transformed a derelict site on London Road in the heart of the east end. The 37 properties have been hailed as “great news for the east end” as community-based hous-ing provider Thenue delivers on its promise to build new homes. The ambitious development has also provided a new office for Thenue which for many years was located round the corner. The development was officially launched by the Right Honour-able, the Lord Provost of Glasgow, Sadie Docherty. Lord Provost Docherty said Thenue was a “high profile” com-munity- based housing provider adding: “These are well built af-

fordable homes and I’m delighted to declare them open.” The development was in part created in partnership with the Aberlour Child Care Trust - the largest, solely Scottish children’s charity which also has offices and 12 properties within the complex. There are a total of 37 Thenue homes made up of 16 three-apartment flats, four cottage flats and 4 four-apartment flats. To the rear of the building there are a further 10 terraced houses, 2 semi-detached properties and 1 wheelchair-accessible bungalow. Glasgow City Council contributed £5.4m in the form of a “Housing Association Grant” and the Asso-ciation financed the balance of the total cost. The balance of costs not met by grant funding came from loans provided by two lenders – The Housing Finance Corporation and The Royal Bank of Scotland

Charlie Turner, Chief Executive of Thenue Housing Association said: “This impressive new de-velopment confirms our promise to build much needed homes for the people we serve. It has transformed an area on London Road creating a new east end landmark and at the same time providing a new home for Thenue. “People living in the

east end tell us all the time that new housing is a priority. Work-ing with our partners including Glasgow City Council and the Scottish Government we are de-lighted to be responding to that need.” Thenue Chairperson Yvonne McShea said: “Thenue believes that we will only regenerate our communities if we also try to im-prove the quality of life for all our residents. These new homes do just that and are a further step forward in the regeneration of the east end of the city.” The occasion of the official open-ing also included the presentation of a stunning oil painting by art-ist, comedienne and author Janey Godley who is a well known east-ender. Janey spent many years of her life in Calton - one of the east end communities where Thenue has many tenants. The painting Janey has gifted is of St Thenue, the mother of the founding father of Glasgow, St

Mungo and the city’s Patron Saint. The Association takes its name from St Thenue and has perhaps the strongest link to the city’s rich history than any other city hous-ing provider. The painting will now hang prominently in the new of-fices. Janey Godley said it was “touch-ing” to be back in the eastend and said the best thing about the area was the “spirit of the people.” Meanwhile, the opening of the new homes will give Thenue the opportunity to restore an adjacent “memorial garden” along with a commemorative plaque which was taken into safe keeping for the duration of the construction. The Calton Memorial Garden commemorates the lives of the victims of an industrial accident at the nearby Templeton carpet fac-tory in 1889. At the time, Calton was the centre of the weaving industry which was central to the growth of Glasgow as an indus-trial city.

ONE of the most popular Computer Specialists in the area have just made a move which will mean not only more space to work in but also easier access to the majority of their customers as they continue to expand. Scotcomputers have been based in Baillieston for the past four and a half years and during that time they have build up a consider-able business in the area but owners Sam and Alan re-alised that as the company grew the space they had to work with was diminish-ing and so they decided to search for new premises. Many areas in the East End were looked at and either they were unsuitable due to location or cost. Even-tually Sam spotted what he perceived as the ideal site and after long nego-tiations Scotcomputers had found their new location in nearby Uddingston. Being

a shop right on the Main Street (28 Main Street to be precise), means that not only will they be more noti-cable to existing customers Scotcomputers will also pick up passing trade. Alan and Sam are certainly excited about the new premises and since the move a fortnight ago they have come to the conclusion that it was the

right move for the compa-ny. Scotcomputers will still offer all their existing cus-tomers the same high-class second to none service that they have built the company on but now they can offer space and accessibility just a couple of miles away as well. We wish Scotcomput-ers every success in their new premises.

HAVING been formed in De-cember 2011 the Parkhead HA Sheltered Tenants RTO held its first AGM on Tuesday 21st Au-gust.

Formed in a blaze of enthu-siasm the RTO members were devastated when the Chair died suddenly. Mary Layden was a loss to the wider Parkhead community and has been sadly missed. However inspired by her memory the Group moved on and over the year contribut-ed to various Parkhead Housing association consultations.

In addition they have en-joyed presentations from and asking questions of;

• Glasgow Community safety Services

• Clyde Gateway

• Playbustersas they sought to ensure the

best for the local community. The groups representa-

tive on the main Parkhead HA

Board remains Billy Caldwell who is also RTO Treasurer. The AGM confirmed John Buchanan as Chair and Bridie Tummons as Secretary.

The meeting agreed to ex-tend membership to the wider community and will be holding a membership drive.

John Wheatley College East End Campus received a visit over the summer period when retired Principal, Ian Graham, re-turned to mark the installation of a plaque at the Library & Information Centre, renam-ing it ‘The Ian Graham Library’ in his honour.

This is not only an acknowledgement of the huge commitment and tireless work which former Principal Graham undertook throughout his time with the College, but also of the massive contribution he made to the College libraries in terms of resourc-es.

Outgoing Chair of the College’s Board of Management, Andy Woolley, was de-lighted to congratulate Ian Graham on this recognition and dedicate the Library to his central role in developing John Wheatley

College and its communities. Ian said, “I’m pleased and honoured

that the College and its Board of Manage-ment have chosen to acknowledge my time at John Wheatley in this way. It is gratifying to know that the College contin-ues to fight for its communities and their right to employment and learning oppor-tunities – I am reassured that the legacy of wider access and community capacity building will go forward into the future.

“The challenges which lie ahead for the College and its management team are profound, but they and the staff face ad-versity every day – I have every confidence they will prevail and keep the spirit and ethos of John Wheatley alive in the years to come.”

A man is facing a lengthy jail term for carrying out a brutal knife attack outside Caledonia Primary School in Baillieston.

Stephen Savage, 38, repeat-edly stabbed William Punshon on 20 January after an argument involving two families.

Savage admitted assault-ing Mr Punshon to the danger of his life. At the High Court in Glasgow, sentence was de-ferred and he was remanded in custody.

The court heard how Savage verbally abused Mr Punshon’s wife following an incident be-tween their families at the school. He also threatened to come back later that day and stab her husband.

Savage could initially not be traced following the attack but handed himself into police on 6 February. Judge Lord Bracadale remanded Savage in custody and deferred sentencing until September.

Baillieston St Andrews Sunday School was delighted to be able to present a cheque to the Yorkhill Children’s Foundation (YCF) for £518.10 following a pro-longed period of fundraising.

The children chose the charity last September and Sandra Graham from the YCF visited the Sunday School in October 2011 to give a talk on what the YCF did to help children who were in Yorkhill hospital.

The Sunday School then host-ed a series of events to raise the funds. The events included 2 soup lunches, 2 film nights

where fish and chips were enjoyed before the participants watched a film in the church and a family quiz night.

Sandra Graham was invited back to present the prizes to the children at the annual awards ceremony and was then sur-prised and delighted when the cheque was presented during the morning service.

A ground-breaking partner-ship between Scotland’s largest social landlord, Strathclyde Police and Strathclyde Fire and Rescue has been officially launched by Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill.

Glasgow Housing Asso-ciation and the police and fire services have joined forces to tackle anti-social behav-iour in GHA communities and also keep tenants safe in their homes.

The initiative, known as the Community Improvement Part-nership, sees 15 police officers – 12 constables, two sergeants and an inspector – seconded to GHA for three years to work side-by-side with housing staff. Together they are tackling is-sues blighting the lives of ten-ants such as late-night parties, disorder and drug dealing.

A station commander from the fire service has also been seconded to work with hous-ing staff to identify and help

vulnerable tenants who are at risk of fire.

The scheme, which began as a pilot 18 months ago be-fore being rolled out across the city recently, has seen police:• Carry out 6,671 stop and searches• seize almost 3,435g of drugs worth an estimated £17,000• seize 716 litres of alcohol• execute 127 warrants • issue 438 anti-social behav-iour penalty notices• carry out 795 joint visits with GHA staff.

More than 450 home fire safety visits to vulnerable ten-ants have also been carried out since July 2011, helping residents prevent fires in their home.

Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill said: “We want eve-ryone in Scotland to feel safe in their communities. Across the country, there are various local initiatives in place that seek to do this and here in Glasgow, this partnership be-

tween Glasgow Housing Asso-ciation, Strathclyde Police and Strathclyde Fire and Rescue is an excellent model.

“The results speak for themselves and should pro-vide comfort and reassurance to tenants that anti-social be-haviour problems that cause concern are being tackled. I also welcome the increased focus partnership working has placed on fire safety and pre-vention.

“Glasgow Housing Asso-ciation, Strathclyde Police and Strathclyde Fire and Rescue continue to have my full sup-port in developing strategies that keep local people safe.”

All staff involved in the initia-tive are located in a new high-tech base in the Royston area of the city.

The scheme was piloted in the East End and Milton. It is now being rolled out across the city and has already made an impact in Drumchapel, Knightswood and Scotstoun-

hill. It will cover the whole of Glasgow by the end of the year.

The seconded police of-ficers are in addition to the police officers deployed in the individual communities.

The CIP agreement was formally signed in May this year by Strathclyde Police Chief Constable Stephen House and GHA Chair Gor-don Sloan.

GHA Chair Gordon Sloan said: “The partnership has already made an impact in communities across the city, making our neighbour-

hoods safer and better places to live for tenants and factored homeowners.

“By sharing our skills, expe-rience and knowledge - and by working closely together in partnership - we can respond quicker and more effectively to issues ranging from low level anti-social behaviour and noisy parties to serious crime, like drug dealing and violence, as well as fire prevention and identifying and helping vulner-able tenants.”

Strathclyde Police Chief Constable Stephen House said: “By working together with other agencies, we build a

stronger relationship between ourselves and local people.

“We know that crime and anti-social behaviour impacts on people’s lives and we are working hard to address that. The ongoing partnership be-tween the Force, GHA and Strathclyde Fire and Rescue has proven to be extremely worthwhile, allowing us to share information and deal with these key issues at an early stage.

“As a result, the impact on the community has been extremely positive, making a real differ-ence in people’s lives, reducing crime and anti-social behaviour.

We will continue to work togeth-er and keep people safe.”

Lewis Ramsay, Assistant Chief Officer and Director of Community Safety, said:

“Domestic fires remain a core challenge for the Fire and Rescue Service, so I’m delight-ed that we are joining forces with GHA to spread the fire safety message to thousands of their tenants.

“SFR’s link-up with GHA is a great example of partnership working, ensuring that house-holders get the information and support they need to ensure they and their families are as safe as possible in the home.”

Justice Secretary launches partnership to make Glasgow’s communities safer

BRIAN Faulds was murdered in September last year. A man who assisted his broth-ers to try to cover up the murder of a Glasgow man whose body was set on fire has been jailed for four-and-a-half years.

Bryan Christie, 22, helped move the body of 29-year-old Brian Faulds after he had been killed by his two brothers Paul, 29, and 27-year-old Adam.

The pair were jailed for life and ordered to serve a minimum of 24 years before being eligible for parole.(As reported in the last issue of the Re-Gen). Mr Faulds’ remains were found on a path near the River Clyde at Dalmar-nock, Glasgow. Bryan Christie was originally accused of being involved in the murder, but his not guilty plea was accepted by prosecutors. The 22-year-old instead admitted to a charge of

attempting to defeat the ends of justice.

Jailing him at the High Court in Glasgow this week, judge Lord Tyre told Christie he had played a “serious and shocking contribution” in the aftermath of Mr Faulds murder. A number of the victim’s relatives - who had turned up at court amid an increased police presence - yelled “joke” and “I’ll wait four-and-a-half years, no bother” as Christie was lead to the cells.

Last month at the same court, Christie’s brothers admit-ted murdering Mr Faulds at a flat in Dalmarnock in Septem-ber last year.

Lord Tyre jailed them for life and imposed a concurrent sen-tence of six years after they ad-mitted attempting to defeat the ends of justice.

The court heard how the Christies killed Mr Faulds at a

flat in Dalmarnock in Septem-ber 2011.

The judge told the brothers: “The violence which you inflict-ed on Brian Faulds was horrific.

“The post-mortem report and photographs which I have seen bear witness to a vicious and sustained attack.”

Lord Tyre added: “Only you know why this happened but what is clear is you inflicted at least 30 blows with bladed weapons to the victim’s head. The injuries which resulted are truly dreadful.”

The corpse was put in the wheelie bin and moved from the murder scene to an em-bankment next to the Clyde Walkway where it was taken out of the bin. An accelerant was applied and the body set on fire whilst weapons such as a cleaver and axes were also disposed of.

“Get on yer bike”

Glasgow makes its debut on the interna-tional stage from 16th-18th November 2012. It will be the first major event to be staged at the new Sir Chris Hoy Velo-drome, which forms part of the £113mil-lion Commonwealth Arena.

Tickets went on sale to British Cycling members last week and sold out within a few hours. Tickets are now on sale to the general public and can be purchased via www.ticketmaster.co.uk. Spectators are encouraged to book their tickets early to avoid disappointment as high demand is expected.

British Cycling is hoping that the chance for cycling fans, new and old, to see the world’s best cyclists in action on home soil once again will continue to in-spire participation in the sport across the nation as well as provide GB athletes with more top level international competition in this country.

2013 will see the action continue in Manchester with the UCI BMX Supercross World Cup round that takes place from 19th-20th April 2013.This will be the third major international BMX event to take place in the UK in the space of 12 months, following May’s World Championships and the Olympic Games. The competition will take place at Manchester’s National BMX Centre, which itself was built as part of the London Olympic Games legacy and has provided Team GB’s BMX athletes with a world class training and competition facil-ity since it opened a year ago.

Jonny Clay, Cycle Sport and Membership Director at British Cycling commented:

“Hosting events of this calibre demon-strates how committed we are to devel-opment of the sport and shows howwell we’re able to combine infrastructure and events to drive growth in the sport at all levels.

“The Track World Cup in Glasgow is the first opportunity for people to see the GB c y - cling

team in international action after the Olympic Games and the event promises to be a great spectacle for cycling fans as our GB athletes prepare for the 2014 Com-monwealth Games and set off on the road to Rio 2016.”

“We’re delighted to also be bringing the first round of the 2013 UCI BMX Supercross World Cup to Manchester and welcome the best international BMX racing back to the UK for the third time in 12 months, con-tinuing the legacy left by this year’s UCI BMX World Cham-pionships in Birmingham and the London Olympic Games.”

Simon Morton, Director of Major Events at UK Sport, said:

“We are delighted the UK has been given the opportuni-ty to host these exciting sports thanks to National Lottery funding. It has been clearly demonstrated with events such as the Track Cycling World Cup, which UK Sport has supported since 2004, how events like this can support both growth and performance ambitions.

“The Chris Hoy Velodrome in Glasgow will be one of the world’s best venues for Track Cycling, and our fans are in for a real treat as they see the British team begin their journey towards Rio 2016. This will be the first of many events that UK Sport’s National Lottery funded programme will help to stage in the UK after London 2012.”

“We are fully committed to building a strong and sustainable legacy from host-ing London 2012 and have increased our investment to £4.5million a year to bring world class sport like the UCI Track Cycling World Cup Classics and UCI BMX Super-cross World Cup to this country.

“Our programme has already secured 10 World and European Championships for the UK in the last 18 months and wewill continue to work hard to bring world class

sport here” Chair of Glasgow Life and the Ex-

ecutive Member for the Commonwealth Games, Councillor Archie Graham, said:

“The London 2012 Olympic Games cap-tured the imagination of the nation, with the sensational performances of the Team GB cycling team among the real highlights. The atmosphere at the Olympic velodrome

was incredible and we can’t wait to get a feel for that when the Track World Cup comes to the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome in November.

“Glasgow is one of the world’s leading sporting cities in part thanks to our world-class events programme, which is growing all the time as we continue to invest in the very best facilities. And as we look

ahead to the Glasgow 2014 Common-wealth Games, the Track World Cup will give people the chance to see just what they can expect when the world’s top cy-clists go for gold in our new velodrome.”

Paul Bush OBE, Chief Operating Officer

for EventScotland said: “Scotland is the perfect stage for events,

and with the opening of the new Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome we can proudly add the sport of track cycling to our extensive portfolio of major international events.

Following the success of Sir Chris and his fellow Team GB athletes at the Olympics, the excitement and enthusiasm for the World Cup event in Glasgow is going to be huge.”

Councillor Rosa Battle, Manchester City Council executive member for culture and leisure, said:

“The UCI BMX Super-cross World Cup is sure to be spectacular and it will be phenomenal to see

The National BMX Centre host its first glob-al event.

“Since opening, the BMX centre has proved incredibly popular with both local residents and elite competitors. Two athletes based at the centre, Shanaze Reade and Liam Phillips, have recently represented the country in the Olympics

and I’m sure their example along with the BMX Supercross World Cup will inspire even more people to give the sport a go.”

“The UCI BMX Supercross World Cup shows once again that Manchester is a world-class sporting destination and it’s a very welcome addition to the exciting programme of events we have lined up for 2013.”

SEPTEMBER is World’s Biggest Coffee Morning month.

Help us make it the biggest ever by getting involved in the biggest event of the year and help people living with cancer.

Being part of the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning is a piece of cake. You can organize your own event and you can help make a difference to people living with cancer. Make time for what really matters and host a coffee morning at home, work, school or in the community. The money you raise will make Macmillan time to help people affected by cancer.

What’s it all for?Cancer is the toughest fight most of us will ever

face. Macmillan is there to make sure no one has to go through it alone. Whatever you raise, you will be helping to improve the lives of people affected by cancer across the UK. Macmillan provides a team supporting those affected by cancer every step

of the way. There are currently 2 million people living with cancer in the UK. By 2030 there will be 4 million. Macmillan wants to make sure they will be there for all of them.

One in three of us will get cancer and for most it will be the toughest thing we ever face. When you’re facing the toughest fight of your life, you need a team of inspiring people in your corner with you. That’s what Macmillan is all about they provide medical, emotional, practical and financial support and they push for a better cancer care system. There the team that gives you the strength and energy to face the fight and get through it.

How to get involvedThere are lots of ways you can be involved with

the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning. By making time for what really matters you’ll be helping to improve the lives of people living with cancer.

Sign up to host an eventFirst and foremost you can sign up to host your

own event. Or if you know someone who you think would make a great Coffee Morning host, get them to sign up.

Make a donation onlineIf you can’t host a coffee morning or get yourself

along to one, you can still be part of the big event log on to www.macmillan.org.uk.

For loads of tips and advice on how to host your event log on to www.macmillan.org.uk

Having a coffee morning is a great excuse to get together with those we cherish. And in making time for what really matters, you’ll also be making time for Macmillan to help people affected by cancer.

How much Macmillan time can we create this year?

£25 pays for a Macmillan nurse to support a family affected by cancer for one hour.

£138 pays for 3 hours of confidential support and information for anyone with questions or concerns about cancer.

£61 pays for 4 hours for a Macmillan benefits adviser to help someone struggling with the costs of cancer.

£181 could pay for a Macmillan social worker or family support worker for a day, helping people manage the social and practical problems of living with cancer.

£278 could keep Macmillan information and support centre stocked for a month with all the resources it needs to support people affected by cancer.

£370 could pay for the hire of a room for a year so a self-help and support group could hold regular meetings.

Date For your Diary !!!Friday 28 September 2012

£370 could pay for the hire of a room for a year so a self-help and support group could hold regular meetings.

and training opportunities at the new development to so many people.” Being built on the north side of the park, adjacent to where Asda Living and Hobbycraft are located, the project will not interfere with the day to day use of the shopping park. Phil added:“A leisure development will be a great addition to this area and provide a real boost in terms of entertainment provision, as well as for the area’s economy. “This development comes at an exciting time for East End of Glasgow. With the Commonwealth Games coming, we will be proud to have such a fantastic showcase for visitors to come and enjoy what the area has to offer. “We understand the role we can play in helping support the local economy and community and will work with our partners to identify jobs for people from the East End of Glasgow.” The Hercules Unit Trust (HUT), the specialist retail warehouse fund advised by Glasgow Fort Shopping Park’s owner British Land and managed by Schroders, secured the letting of the development, with Morgan Williams and Montagu Evans acted for British Land. Councillor Jim Coleman who has been involved with Glasgow Fort Shopping Centre since day one was delighted with the announcement and he told the Re-Gen, “ I am very pleased that this development has now come to fruition, it brings more much needed jobs to the area and that is why “The Fort” was created all those years ago. With Glasgow Regeneration Agency also involved it means things are certainly going to plan and long may they continue to do so.” MP for Glasgow East Margaret Curran

told the Re-Gen, “I am delighted the leisure development at The Fort will soon be under way. This will be a great addition to the East End and provide a real boost for the area’s economy. It is fantastic that this will create 200 much needed jobs and that management has confirmed that this will be filled by local people. “ and MSP for Glasgow Humza Yousaf was delighted with the news stating, “At a time when employment opportunities are scarce, the news that a new leisure development is to be constructed at The Fort is welcome. This project will provide much needed jobs for up to 200 people in the East End of Glasgow and will be an exciting addition to the 2014 Commonwealth Games regeneration.” And Alan Sherry, Principal of John Wheatley College, said“We welcome this exciting news about a jobs boost for the Easterhouse area through the new

development at Glasgow Fort. John Wheatley College already has extensive experience in the delivery of employability and vocational skills for the retail sector and we look forward to being involved in partnership with Glasgow Regeneration Agency and the other stakeholder organisations in supporting this welcome initiative. “The expansion of Glasgow Fort will provide excellent opportunities for local people in East and North East Glasgow.”

Talking shop around the East End“Boutique-elicious!” So said MSP Humza Yousaf, SNP rep-resentative for Glasgow, as he popped in yesterday to the new cutting-edge fashion shop, Aleena’s Boutique, at the heart of Glasgow’s regenerating East End, to give support to one of Scotland’s rising young entre-preneurs, 24-year-old Aleena Lippiatt.

Miss Lippiatt graduated in fashion and immediately set about commencing her busi-ness vision at the vanguard of

the changing face of Glasgow’s East End. MSP Humza said: “It’s great to see such a courageous and far-sighted investment, especially in the face of such economic uncertainty and youth unemployment. It’s such an ex-ample of the modern, entrepre-neurial and exciting Scotland we are all trying to build. “With Scot-land warming up for the 2014 Commonwealth Games, and es-pecially after the feel-good fac-tor of the 2012 Olympics, Aleena is certainly setting a great ex-

ample of the Scotland we are all hoping to encourage.

“How often do we read in our newspapers, hear on our radios or watch on our TVs bad youth news. So it’s an absolute plea-sure to be asked along to meet the new grab-the-moment con-fidant Scotland as personified with Aleena. “Education has the Curriculum for Excellence. In the likes of Aleena the economy has, hopefully, its Entrepreneur for Ex-cellence.” Aleena Lippi-att, who is born and bred in Glasgow East, and a Fashion Graduate from De Montfort University in Leicester, chose to re-turn to Scotland and give something back to the community which she says is gradually becoming “gentrified”. Aleena said: “Glasgow East for so long was short-hand for depra-vation. But now, especially with the 2014 warm-up Commonwealth Games bonanza, I see the rum-blings of regeneration and gentrification, and I want to make sure I and my com-pany are at the vanguard of that change.

“It was a real privilege to have someone of Humza’s standing come and offer his support. I know he has talked of backing young entrepreneurs, but for him to take time out and visit my debut shop that said to me he is prepared to put his money where his mouth is. “I have seen in the past much unemploy-

ment, poverty and the resultant hopelessness. However, I hope Aleena’s Boutique doesn’t just offer good quality top range fe-male clothing and footwear but also offer a value of high ex-pectations and high standards for Glasgow East as do the local businesses who continue to re-main here and serve us.

MSP HUMZA YOUSAF WELCOMES “BOUTIQUE-ELiCIOUS” YOUNG FASHION GURU TO GLASGOW

John Wheatley College’s Board of Man-agement is pleased to announce the ap-pointment of a new Chairperson, Margaret Forsyth, who fills the role being vacated by retiring Chair, Andy Woolley.

Margaret originally joined the Board as a co-opted member during session 2004/05 and, since then, has gone on to play a full and active role in the work of the Board of Management, Chairing several of the Standing Committees.

A long and remarkable career in senior management has given Margaret sound business and negotiation skills and she is no stranger to the realms of learning, having completed a first degree, an MBA and various post-grad programmes, many of which were achieved through distance learning while working full-time.

She is also a Fellow of the Institute of

Chartered Secretaries and on the executive council of Scottish Council for Development in Industry. She is an avid football sup-porter and previously sat on the Board of Partick Thistle FC as the Fans Director.

With an impressive background in the private sector, Margaret is acutely aware of employer expectations and needs in rela-tion to skills gaps and training. Her experi-ence in this field will be a real asset to the College in terms of forward planning and new employer engagement.

Although her parents hailed from the East End, she now lives in the Southside. Margaret has, however, that same level of commitment to ‘community’ which her fellow Board Members, past and present, have displayed.

Margaret is set for the challenges that the coming year will bring, especially in

terms of forthcoming merger discussions and continuing budget constraints. She says,

“I’m looking to achieve a positive out-come for our community and for John Wheatley College, ensuring that its legacy is secured. The College’s areas of expertise in the delivery of personal development and employability skills have, over many years, benefited the whole community. The College will look to expand these spe-cialisms over the broader communities of North and East Glasgow, ensuring that any new institution will provide opportunities for all residents, identifying and address-ing needs within its catchment area and beyond.”

“However, we must recognise that we still have to deliver an existing curriculum whilst dealing with merger issues, and we

mustn’t ignore the current students - this is a challenge for the staff and the com-munity as a whole, as well as for the Board.

The Board loses three members this session, Sharjeel Afridi, Professor Arthur Allison and the resigning Chair, Andy Wool-ley.

Margaret continues, “I’d like to convey my gratitude to those departing members of the Board and thank them for their out-standing commitment to the College. I’m delighted, however, that their skills will not be lost altogether as both Andy Woolley and Prof Arthur Allison will be returning as Fellows of the Board. In addition, I’d like to take this opportunity to welcome our new members, Councillor Maureen Burke and Brian McQuillan and look forward to work-ing closely with them in these challenging times for the College and its communities.”

We are confident that Margaret will make her mark and wish her every success in her new role.

Crowds “PEEK” at National Play Day

Re-GENTHE

Friday 24th August 2012 15

This page is sponsored by the following:

An award winning community project based in the “Barras” area of the Calton held a free fun packed family day out for National Play Day at the

beginning of the month in Beardmore Park, Parkhead. All the kids had a fantastic day despite the miserable weather. Activities included Circus Skills, Basketball Challenges, Arts & Crafts and Face-Painting, Knock Down the Can, Hula-Hooping and Throw the Wellie. Main competition of the day was “Come Den with me” which was a Glasgow wide competition, organised by Glasgow Life. PEEK and Playbusters staff provided activities such as,

Golf, Archery, Face Painting, Glitter Tattoos, Candy Floss and Popcorn. Michaela, one of the PEEK Senior Street Play Ranger’s, said: “The weather was miserable and rain threatened the success of the day... However, in true Glaswegian style...children, young people, mammies, grannies, uncles and aunties..even dogs came flooding into Beardmore Park to celebrate National Play Day organised by PEEK

and Playbusters. There were smiles galore as children bounced as tall as the trees on the Bouncy Castles, created forts at ‘Come Den With Me’ and

ate sticks of candy floss as big as their faces. Spirits remained high throughout the day and proved that come rain or shine...families can have fun outside.”

Simply Swap Party Olympic Style !!!Simply Swap, Glasgow’s first fashion swap shop, celebrated its first year of fashion with a free party of Olympic proportions. The shop, at 937 Tollcross Road G32 8UR, has been welcoming savvy shoppers every Friday between 11am and 3pm over the past year, and celebrated its birthday in style on Friday 10th August with an Olympics themed party. Simply Swap provides a

cash-

free fashion exchange for womenswear, menswear and childrenswear and it is as easy as it sounds. Good condition clothing and fashion items can be swapped for others “new-to-you” without the need for money and with the benefit of reducing the amount of unwanted clothing that is thrown out. This alternative way to shop

has proved popular with locals who have taken the opportunity to freshen up their wardrobes for free on a regular basis with this distinctive shopping experience. Developed and run by

Playbusters’ Grow Green with Glasgow’s East End project, customers are welcomed by a team of local volunteers who maintain the shop and who transformed it from an unoccupied shell to a vibrant community space, with shop fittings made from reclaimed items like headboards, pallets and broom handles. “This is a unique shop for Glasgow and has proved a great success in Tollcross with passers-by and regulars alike, who love that there is no money involved. We’re lucky to have a dedicated and friendly volunteer team involved in

all aspects of the shop and they have made it a fun and lively place to visit. We want to celebrate our first year with a big party in the shop to thank all of our customers, recognise the achievements of our wonderful volunteers and to let the broader public in on this shopping secret in the East End. We’ll have a special offer of swapping one of your items for two of ours, free entry into a raffle and party food. We thought it would be well-timed to include some Olympics-style fun and games on the day with our own torch ceremony, three-legged races, paper plane ‘javelin’ throwing, hula hooping

relays and other wacky games. In the first year of trading, Simply Swap has seen more than 4000 items exchanged and welcomed over 760 members of the community through its doors. This has translated to a carbon emissions saving of over

15,600 kg. The Simply Swap team aims to change attitudes towards shopping, waste and disposable goods and in addition to fashion, hopes to incorporate food swapping in the coming year.

responsibly, but th

is is easier sa

id than

done. Drink is a

major factor and with

the kick-off la

st week being 12.30 many

supporters began drinking early in the

morning, whether th

ey had it in the

house from the Saturday night, o

r were

served in the MANY public houses th

at

open their back doors t

hinking they are

doing their customers a

favour. Number

One Problem..... ALCO

HOL. The majority

of supporters w

ho rush down four of five

pints, a couple of sp

irits or a bottle

of

Buckfast, in such a short s

pace of time

then go on a supporters bus w

ith a couple

of cans or bottle

s (yes w

e know that drink

is not su

pposed to be allowed on buses,

but we all know a blind eye is t

urned),

then get caught up in the atmosphere

of the songs etc...

, is a certain recipe for

trouble. What happens th

en is that th

ey

enter the game and being surrounded

by police and ste

wards they seem to

be able to keep a lid on their emotions

albeit some will e

ither be warned or even

arrested for minor offences.

It’s on the

road home when the drink has begun to

kick in and the hatred that they have for

each other spills

over. Now the people

we are speaking about here are NOT the

usual perceived “Thugs”,

these are

people who are run of the mill n

eighbours

and have “Friends” o

f opposite religions,

who in any other circumstances w

ould

normally do everything they could to help

anyone in need. The problem is t

hough,

that in the run up to an “O

ld Firm” game,

all the hype that has been spouted by

some of the tabloid newspapers i

n an

effort to sell th

e paper basica

lly fuels

the bigotry and hatred. Just t

he slant

put on stories ca

n stir up feelings of

bigotry or perceived bigotry and even

photos which in the normal ru

f the

story, all of a sudden are constru

ed as

being too much of one side or th

e other.

BIGOTRY, no matter w

hat shape it t

akes

is unacce

ptable and to put a spin on a

phrase or paragraph in a newspaper can

be part of it.

In a newspaper th

is is easy

to do...Take for example both teams of th

e

“Old Firm” w

in 1-0 they week before they

both meet.

Headlines proclaim Celtic

Cruise To

Victory,

Rangers Scrape Win, (

or vice

versa), such headlines are perceived as

favouring one team or the other and in

some cases as bigotry, which to normal

people sounds crazy but w

hich paper

would you take, obviously the one that

hypes up your team and seems to

bring

down the other. FOOTBALL S

ONGS and

CHANTS, many of th

ese are hilarious and

show the fun side of fo

otball but w

hen

it comes to

the “Old Firm

” fun goes out

the window. Most o

f the songs su

ng at

“Old Firm” m

atches are now aimed at

inciting the oppositio

n by bringing the

“Irish Tro

ubles” into them and make no

mistake BOTH SIDES ARE A

S BAD AS ONE

ANOTHER. Of co

urse no one will agree

on this as each sid

e proclaims it is p

art of

their herita

ge to sing such songs.

The answer to

that is that it

is part

of EVERYONE in

the area’s herita

ge to

walk along a street on the day of a

football match and not be subjected to

the violence, bigotry or abuse that is

happening now after “Old Firm

” games.

Families, Housewives, P

ensioners etc,

have the right to

enjoy a day of rest

without all the hassle

that accompanies

an “Old Firm

” match.

We could rave on

and on about the negatives th

at happen

when the “Old Firm

” meet and the cost

to every one of us for th

e policing, fo

r the

ambulances and medics needed, fo

r the

upset of our daily lives and much, much,

more, suffice to say that....

If you spotted

someone trapped in a car cr

ash or a house

fire, would you sto

p to think...”I wonder if

that person is a diffe

rent religion to me?”

before trying to save them.

If you’ve got

to think of the answer , t

hen not only do

you have major problems....”WE A

A Sandyhills Loan shark this week

admitted to illegally lending money

from his home in Glenturret Street

and at other addresses in the city at

Glasgow Sheriff Court.

Colin Morrison (46) provided several

illegal cash loans to a vulnerable

couple who were forced to move home

to escape his clutches after being

charged interest which amounted to

over 719,000%. Joseph Rankin and

his partner Angela Clements (who

suffers from the muscle wasting disease

Miotonic Dystrophy), borrowed cash

from Morrison and struggled to pay the

high interest levied on the loan. Often

the couple were left to scrimp on around

£15-00 a week as the pressure became

too much to pay off the loan, forcing

them to get deeper into the mire by

borrowing from other illegal lenders

just to pay off Morrison. Two other

women, Elizabeth Cassells and Georgina

Close also fell under the grasp of the

Sandyhills Shark as they both borrowed

money unaware that they would be

paying back extortionate rates of

interest. Appearing at Glasgow Sheriff

Court last Wednesday Morrison admitted

the charge as the Crown accepted a plea

of Not Guilty to assaulting Joseph Rankin

and a Breach of the Peace charge.

Morrison’s partner Roseann, was also

charged with lending money illegally

but her not guilty plea was accepted by

the Crown.

Prosecutor Richard Hannay told the

court that Mr Rankin and Ms Clements

borrowed between £10-00 and £400-00

from Morrison and it was estimated they

had paid back around £1500 a year for

six years.

It was stated that the couple would

borrow from other lenders just to meet

the repayments on Morrison’s loans.

Eventually it became too much for the

couple and they were forced to flee their

home to escape from the money lenders

in the East End. Elizabeth Cassells

borrowed cash from Morrison around

Christmas time in 2007 and continued to

do so for the next three years.

Widow, Georgina Close (50) also

borrowed sums but always repaid them

the following week at an Interest Rate

of 30%.

When the matter was reported to

the police a warrant was issued to

search the Morrison home in the quiet,

leafy, suburbs of Sandyhills and

officers found £7,230 stashed in his

wardrobe. Prosecutor Hannay stated

that Colin Morrison had not

been employed or in receipt of

benefits during the period in

question. Sheriff Martin Jones

told the accused, “Those who

prey on the poor, weak and

vulnerable in this way will be

severely treated by the courts.”

He also stated that Morrison

had pled guilty to a very

serious charge. Sentence was

deferred until later this month

for background reports and

Morrison was released on bail. He also

faces proceedings under the proceeds of

crime act.

WHY ARE THEY NOT IN “ACCORD”

PRIOR to being returned un-opposed

as First Minister, Alex Salmond joined

newly elected Shettleston MSP John

Mason and East End Councillors, Alison

Thewliss, David Turner and David McDonald at a meeting with carers and

service users at the closure threatened

Accord Centre in Dalmarnock. The Accord Centre which provides day

care service for people with learning disabilities is due to close to make way for

the Commonwealth Games car park and

athletes transport hub. The loss of this vital service has been

fought every step of the way by the East

Carers group, service users, families and

friends. The closure of the Accord centre

leaves the east end with just one day care

facility in Riddrie. At the meeting Carers presented the

first minister with information from minutes of a previous meeting of the

Community Health and Care Partnership

which explained that the service offered

at the accord would be replaced in a new/re-furbished building. This stands

in contrasts to the Councils current view

which is the close the Accord and not

replace the service. This is part of a wider

Council policy called Personalisation which

has seen a round of large cuts to people’s

personal budgets. David McDonald, the SNP spokesperson

on Social Care said of the meeting; “It

was great that the First Minister could join

carers and service users from the East End

at the Accord Centre and to give them his

support in their fight against Glasgow City

Council’s proposals to close the centre and

cut this much valued service. The East End of Glasgow must not lose out on services as a result of the

Commonwealth Games, the closure of

the Accord leaves just one day centre for

people with learning disabilities, and even

this centre is going to be outwith the price range for people as the Council are also introducing a series of brutal cuts to people’s care packages”. When the Re-Gen contacted, Councillor Matt

Kerr, the council’s Executive Member for Social Care, he said: “We have been working closely with the Accord carers for several months to find a solution

which is acceptable to everyone.“Alternative day care support has already been identified for a significant number of service users who have the highest and most complex support needs. The move to this centre will begin on Monday next

week. “The remaining services users have all been offered places in another centre and we are extremely confident there will be a positive conclusion for those who

continue to attend at the Accord Centre.“It’s

disappointing the First Minister didn’t feel

able to accept our invitation to meet today

when he was already in Glasgow to discuss

the Accord Centre, but the offer remains

open. “It is also regrettable the SNP government seems intent on treating this

issue as political football when they appear

to have no real understanding of what

needs to be done.”We at the Re-Gen are not in the least

concerned about anyone scoring political

points but what we are concerned about

is that a vulnerable group of people who

deserve much better are being passed from

pillar to post and could end up with no premises to meet their needs. What is called for here is for the two opposing parties to iron out a solution (such as using somewhere like the old Fernan Street premises which would be capable of housing the group either short term or even

long term). What we don’t want is for a group who

are dependent on stability to be messed

about. Get it sorted out quickly or we will

start going after those who don’t seem too

bothered as to where the Accord service

users are housed as long as they can say,

“We did our bit for the Party” We are

watching the outcome with interest so

please get it sorted as soon as possible.

Driving Offences

This past week saw officers in ‘B’ Division take part in a force wide operation which spanned over three days (14th-17th August), focusing on uninsured and unlicensed drivers. Numerous check points were set up throughout the division by officers. In total 13 driving licence offences and 17 insurance offences have been reported to the procurator fiscal, and as a result 16 vehicles were seized. Officers Local Knowledge Returns Property and Takes Knife Off The Street Excellent work by both Pc Vicky Short and Pc Clarke Crawford both Community Officers for the Parkhead/ Shettleston area in BD. Whilst carrying out enquiries at the Forge market, PC’s Crawford and Short were viewing CCTV footage of a theft from a motor vehicle which had been reported the previous day. While viewing the CCTV the officers identified the male responsible, a well known career criminal. The officers acted promptly and searched the suspect’s home with a warrant. Both the suspect and the stolen property were found within. The victim of the theft was delighted with the police service which resulted in him getting his property returned to him. On their next set of shifts PC’s Short and Crawford were carrying out foot patrol on Tollcross road when they observed a well

known violent criminal. The officers stopped and spoke to the male, and could tell due to his demeanour, something wasn’t right. The officers searched the male and found a knife in his pocket. The male was arrested and now remanded in custody. Vehicle Thefts In recent weeks a trend has emerged where vehicles are being stolen from leisure facilities throughout the Strathclyde Police Force Area. This has centred particularly around high value, theft attractive vehicles where the owners locker has been forced, vehicle keys stolen and the vehicle taken from the car park. Whilst positive lines of enquiry are being pursued, speaking at London Road Police Office, Constable Ryan Curran said “We would urge vehicle owners to be particularly vigilant when entering leisure facilities, to ensure that they are not being followed in from the car park by anyone seeking to identify the locker they will be using. If you have any concerns about persons frequenting such a place, bring it immediately to the attention of staff in the premises or contact the police. I would also like to take this opportunity to remind homeowners about the security of their homes and vehicles. It is not uncommon for vehicles to be stolen from domestic properties in a similar manner, where insecure doors are opened and car keys

stolen. Simple, practical steps can be taken to reduce the risk and the attractiveness of a vehicle being stolen in a housebreaking; such as Ensure vehicle keys are not left in line of sight from windows or doors, and do your best to conceal them within your home. DO NOT leave them in the back of the door!If you have a garage, use it! It makes stealing a vehicle a lot less attractive if the security of a house, a garage and then the vehicle has to be overcome!Make sure the door to your house is locked, and that patio doors etc are not left open when you are not nearby. I would ask that you make your neighbours and friends aware of this advice, and would urge you to contact Strathclyde Police with any concerns you have about suspicious activity on 0141 532 2000”. Drink & Drug Driving Over the month of August, officers within Glasgow North, East and East Dunbartonshire Division have been proactively targeting those suspected of driving whilst under the influence of drugs and alcohol. During this period 19 people have been arrested for driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, and have been reported the procurator fiscal. In addition, over 2000 vehicles have been stopped and a number of other offences detected. Inspector Gary Price who is in charge of the divisional support group said, “Driving whilst impaired is an area of significant concern. Currently, 1 in 9 road deaths nationally are attributable to impaired drivers and that is unacceptable. We are committed to reducing the harm this causes our communities by proactively targeting those suspected of flouting these laws which are in place to save lives”. Not only do those convicted of drinking or drug driving face imprisonment, fines and driving disqualifications; but employment often terminated and insurance premiums become hugely inflated for many years. Drug Recovery Another successful drug recovery has been made by officers from the Proactive Unit at Shettleston Police Office. Acting upon information about drugs being supplied, officers searched a property in Langbar Gardens, Glasgow under warrant and recovered nearly 3000 Diazepam tablets with a street value of £3000. Area Inspector John Gormlie said “This represents a significant recovery that brings about real disruption to those dealing illegal drugs that blights our communities. These people cause real harm to others, and my officers will continue to keep people safe by disrupting the supply of drugs by all means available to us.” Time Waster!

When a male attended at Easterhouse Police Office to report that money had been fraudulently removed from his bank account, a full investigation of the report was undertaken by Constables Drennan and Smith of Easterhouse Community Policing Team. The victim would soon become the villain of the piece when officers viewed the CCTV in the bank and seen him withdrawing the money that he alleged had been taken by fraud! Instead of being reimbursed and got charged with Wasting Police Time and has been reported to the Procurator Fiscal! Operation Neptune – Convicted Drug Dealer The Re-Gen reported in April 2012 that Glasgow North, East and East Dunbartonshire Division had a month long proactive operation targeting criminality at all levels. Just this week, a 40 year old Coatbridge man was sentenced to 2 years imprisonment after being convicted of being concerned in the supply of heroin in the car park at Glasgow Fort Shopping Centre. He was approached by plain clothes police officers from Easterhouse Communtiy Policing Team during Neptune, and found with 29 grams of the class A drug in his possession (which is enough to supply almost 200 people) and worth almost £2000 to the dealer. Inspector John Gormlie from Easterhouse Police Office said “Clearly this is a fantastic result. It was an excellent detection made by my officers and has seen an individual who makes a fortune from the misery of others locked up for 2 years. Let this be a warning to others who carry on this business of misery in our community; we will find you and you will go before a court to answer for the harm you cause”.

Rogue Businesses Targeted in Organised Crime Operation As part of the drive to target Serious and Organised Crime, the Divisional Support Group carried out proactive intervention tactics with partner agencies against several premises, leading to disruption of the criminal enterprises to the tune of £30,000+. Numerous licensing and trading offences were detected and the division intend to carry out more proactive work in this area over the coming weeks and months. Copper Theft The high instances of copper theft remain a concern for the Community as a whole and B Division have continued to pursue offenders rigorously. Last week, officers apprehended 2 males who were in possession of 22 metres of copper wire which had been stolen from Scottish Power. The males have been charged and a report has been submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.

MATCH ACTION REPORTS SPECIAL

Instead of Saturday, August 25, pairings will now go ahead on Saturday, September 1, from 2pm. A planned friendly against Mount Vernon was cancelled due to the increasing commitments of both clubs. Officials have been busy entertaining invited clubs and associations as part of their birthday, and most recently four dates were set aside to welcome everyone. Family Fortunes Day at Garrowhill was another great success. The team of Robert and Margaret Clark, assisted by John Hannan, defeated Peter and Jane Barclay, assisted by Ronnie Silverman,

in the final. The Junior Coaching Programme at Garrowhill has been rewarded yet again after Laura Welsh won the Scottish Ladies Junior Singles title at Northfield, Ayr, last month. As promised, I have more information, which was kindly passed on by my excellent club contact, Mr Alex Morrison. Laura reached Northfield by winning her District Final. On Saturday, July 28, she defeated Chloe Ramsay (Bainford) 21-16, and Claire Walker (Burnbank) 21-14. The following morning, Laura overcame semi-final opponent Jennifer Burnfield, of Midton,

21-18, and crushed Kirsty Anne Gardiner (Orbiston) 21-11 in the afternoon final... a superb achievement. Said Alex Morrison: “Laura will represent Scotland in the Ladies Junior Singles at the British Isles Finals in Northern Ireland during July, 2013, and was part of the Scottish Ladies Under-25 team which competed in Wales prior to the National Championships.” He also revealed: “Laura was brought to Garrowhill by her grandfather, who was a member of Baillieston Bowling Club, to be coached as a junior, and has progressed to become a full member.”

SUNDAY Central Amateur League clubs faced a hectic pre-season programme of friendlies, and Media Officer Danny Rodgers has kindly supplied the lastest list. Manager John Hughes has signed eight players - including former junior star Thomas Jarvis, who had been coaching at the East End club since November, but now officially joins as a player/coach from Colville Park Amateurs. Other recruits are goalkeeper Andrew Lennox (Dennistoun Amateurs), centre back John Gaynor (Aitkenhead Thistle), midfielders Marc Muir, who returns after taking a year out studying, Kieran Martin (Celtic Amateurs), and Kenny Jarvis (Cumbernauld United Juniors), plus strikers Brendan Queen (Duncanrig) and Ian Pelosi (free agent). GARROWHILL THISTLE, from the Central Scottish Amateur League, have been struggling to recruit a goalkeeper. Thistle play their home games at Lochend School, Easterhouse, and use the excellent Bannerman School 3G surface twice a week for training. Anyone interested should call 07817162441. BROOMHOUSE, who ended their involvement with Under-21 football by winning the West of Scotland League First Division championship last season, have been accepted into the Greater Glasgow A.F.L. West kicked-off their campaign by conceding an early goal against Stromsgodset IK - Norway, but a quickfire double from Daniel Bonner, and John Mitchell’s 26th minute header completely changed the tempo of the game. Stromsgodset netted again, but the Scottish visitors responded superbly through Bonnar – completing his hat-trick - Craig Robertson and Ruaridh Langan (2). Tired legs set in during the later stages of the match, and the Norwegians scored twice for a 7-4 defeat. Having beaten Atlet (Ukraine) 2-0 in their second game - thanks to a Craig Robertson double - West looked set for another great result against Hercules, who trailed 3-2 after twice taking the lead. Michael Kennedy and Craig Boyd’s double was overturned by a late equaliser.

That disappointment was dismissed with victories over two Swedish clubs - OJA.TT ( 3-0 ), goals from Mitchell (2) and Bonnar, and a Craig Robertson strike, which sent them into the quarter-finals. F.C. Paide (Estonia) were simply blown away by a whirlwind display. Scorers in a comprehensive 5-0 win were Daniel Bonnar ( 2), Andrew Armitage, Michael Kennedy and Gavin Millar. In the semi-final clash, West twice fell behind to a strong SB07 team, but Craig Boyd bagged a double before the Swedish champions went through from the dreaded penalty kick shoot-out. Celtic Boys’ Club were well served at Cup Denmark by midfielder Danny Drummond and striker Gavin Millar, while Craig Boyd (St Andrews Boys’ Club ) was voted Player of the Tourament. Meanwhile, the SYFA West Under-17 squad could be heading for Italy and a training camp next year. Despite losing 2-1 against STB
