There is a song from 1971 which speaks

well about what it means to love as God

calls us to love. Verse 1

Reach out and touch a soul that is hungry

Reach out and touch a spirit in despair

Reach out and touch a life torn and dirty

A man who is lonely if you care

Reach out and touch that neighbor who hates you

Reach out and touch that stranger who meets you

Reach out and touch the brother who needs you

Reach out and let the smile of God touch thro' you

Verse 2

Reach out and touch a friend who is weary

Reach out and touch a seeker unaware

Reach out and touch tho' touching means losing

A part of your own self if you dare

Reach out and give your love to the loveless

Reach out and make a home for the homeless

Reach out and shed God's light in the darkness

Reach out and let the smile of God touch thro' you

Don’t spend any more time analyzing what it

means to reach. REACH out and touch someone

today. Take action—exert energy—and connect!

Pastor Jenni

The purpose of Nimmonsburg United

Methodist Church is to REACH and

RESOURCE people to be disciples of

Jesus Christ, and to RELEASE them

into ministry to the world.

What does it mean to reach people?

Webster defines REACH as:

“a) to touch or grasp by extending a

part of the body or an object,

b) to pick up and draw toward one.”

This tells me three things about the word

REACH:

1. We have to take action. We cannot

reach someone without moving

ourselves;

2. We have to exert effort. To extend or

pick up takes some effort; and

3. We have to connect. Touching,

grasping, picking up, and drawing

toward all require contact.

Taking action and exerting energy to con-

nect with the people around us is really what

God meant by “Love your neighbor as yourself”.

To love is action. To love is to REACH.

I was asked about our purpose statement, and the question made me realize that we need to

remind ourselves why we are here. Beginning this month and over the next couple of

months, I will re-run articles from 2017 when our purposes statement was adopted. I pray

this will refresh our vision and give us energy to do the work of the Church.

June 2019

Congratulations to our Graduates!

Why Do Bell Ringers Wear Gloves? (or not) The conventional wisdom back when gloves were first worn was to prevent calluses on the ringers’ fingers and hands when the handles were made of leather.

Once handles became plastic, the idea behind wearing gloves was to pro-tect the bells from any dirt or oil that might be on the ringers’ fingers. As time has passed, we’ve realized that is not necessarily the case as ringers know enough not to touch the bell casings. The bell casings are occasionally polished to take care of any dirt or prints on the bells.

Welcome to our New Members,

Diane Schaumberg and Holly Sensenig

Just a reminder that your Trustees are working hard at NUMC. Hopefully you have noticed the new handicap ramp at the back entry of the Church that was recently installed. They also saved

approximately $2,500 last winter with the new snowplow/salt contractor, Triple M Services. Nice job Trustees!

Congratulations to Scarlet Austin!

“This piece turned out better than I had hoped especially color wise being that I took a risky path in choosing glaze colors that could have went bad compared to the way the picture showed.

The end result is what makes me so proud of this piece. It was for my Fast Forward Ceramics college class last semester that I took, and this semester I’m taking Fast Forward 3D Art which is also a college class.”

Congratulations to Breanen Rought!

Scarlet won first prize in her class poetry contest in April. Nice job Scarlet!

United Methodist Night at the Ball Game

It’s your turn to plan worship …….

July 21st and 28th, 2019 will be congregation-led worship. Pastor Jenni

will put together worship for these two weeks based upon your responses

to the following. We will collect responses through June 30th. Please cut

this out and place in the offering plate, Pastor Jenni’s mailbox, or in the

box on the Office door.

1. What question do you want Pastor to answer?

2. What hymn do you want to sing?

3. What scripture would you like read?

4. Are you willing to give a 3-5 minute testimony about what God means to you or has done

for you? (Include your name)

5. Would you like to share a song or a poem with the congregation? (Include your name)

6. Anything else you would like us to do?

Please make sure that you inform the office if you change your

address, phone number, cell number or e-mail address so we can

keep our records up-to-date. Thanks!

The Nimmonsburg United Methodist Women will hold a two-

day Rummage Sale on June 7 and 8. The sale hours are 9 am until

3 pm both days. There will be a Bag Sale on Saturday. You can

bring items to the church starting Monday, June 3rd. The Church will

be open to receive donations from 9-11 am, 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm thru

Thursday. Please place them inside the back entrance to the church,

not in Fellowship Hall. This year the sale will be on the lower level of

the church in several rooms to the left of the lower entrance. The old

Sunday School Room will hold household items and larger items, the old Choir Room will hold

dishes and other kitchen items, small appliances, books, CDs, etc., and the meeting room will offer

clothing on tables, linens, toys and games, and stuffed animals. Clothing racks will be set up in

the hall. The bake sale will be near the exit in the entrance to the Wesleyan Room.

We accept donated items that are clean and in good working order. Clothing must be

laundered and in good condition, and warm weather clothes are especially desirable. Clothes for

children and toys are really good sellers. Kitchen and household decor also sell well if in good

condition and clean. (Can't stress that enough--clean and functioning sells, dirty and broken

does not!) At our previous sales I have received several comments about how our sale is a

pleasure to shop because things are so clean and well presented. We are getting a good reputation

thanks to you! Please, no outdated electronics, especially televisions. We cannot give them away

and no organization will accept them. If you are bringing in small appliances, please plug them in

and make sure they work. Videotapes, even of popular movies, do NOT sell. People do not have

the equipment to play them. DVDs and music CDs do sell. Books in good condition are okay but

please no textbooks and no large boxes of books. We simply do not have room for many. If you

follow these guidelines in your donations, it will save us much work.

We are having a Bake Sale, also on the lower level. Our bake sale has been very success-

ful and always sells out. You can bring your homemade specialties either Fri-

day or Saturday morning for the sale. There will be someone at the church on

Thursday night to also accept baked goods. Since your creations tend to fly

out the door, we cannot thank you enough for baking for our sale.

This is one of our two big fundraisers of the year. We help out many

worthwhile causes, both local and worldwide, with the money we earn. We

appreciate all that you do by helping set up, donating items and clothing to

sell, working at the sale (we will need a few more helpers this year with this larger space to

cover), shopping at the sale and baking. Thanks to all of you for contributing!

Please call Cheryl Weeks at 723-8444 if you have any questions, and please see Phyllis

Bartlett if you are interested in working.

Celebrating Our 100th Anniversary

To celebrate this landmark in our Church’s history, we are in the process of planning celebration events throughout

2020. If you would like to participate in the planning, or help work on specific activities or projects, please attend the Anniversary Committee meeting on September 10th at 6:00 pm with your thoughts and ideas.

So far, a Rededication Service is planned for March 22, 2020 during worship followed by a Fellowship Time celebration, a 100th Anniversary Celebration Service will be held on June 21, 2020 with a meal in Fellowship Hall featuring speakers, music and memories, and a fun Community Block Party in September.

Together we can really make our 100th Anniversary special!

We have all experienced times in life when we needed help, and there are times when we were able to provide help. Since January, our Church has been able to help with mortgage payments, rent payments and utilities for those who are having difficulty making ends meet. We have given out over $2,300, and we currently have $45 in this fund. When people are in need, we can help. If you are aware of a need, please contact Pastor Jenni.

Thank you to those who have supported this Fund. If you would like to make a donation, we have envelopes in the pews and on the shelf in the narthex. Please make sure your envelope and/or check is marked “Discretionary Fund”.

Meet Bruce Kellett

On the faded Island Books sign hanging over the porch is the motto, “No Man is an Island; Every Book is a World.” A. J. Fikry, the irascible owner, is about to discover just what that truly means. A. J.’s life is not at all what he expected it to be. His wife has died, his bookstore is experience the worst sales in its history, and his prized rare collection of Poe poems has been stolen. Slowly he is isolating himself from all of the people of Alice Island—from Lambiase, the police officer who’s always felt kindly toward Fikry; from Ismay, his sister-in-law who is hell-bent on saving him from his dreary self; from Amelia, the lovely and

idealistic Knightley Press Sales Rep. who keeps taking the ferry to Alice Island, refusing to be deterred by A. J.’s bad attitude. And then a mysterious package appears at the bookstore. This unexpected arrival gives A. J. the opportunity to make his life over, the ability to see everything anew. It doesn’t take long to notice the change overcoming him, or for Amelia to see her client in a new light. As surprising as it is moving, this is an unforgettable tale of transformation and second chances, an irresistible affirmation of why we read, and why we love.

All readers are welcome!

June Book Club—The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry

Bruce Kellett has lived in the area since he was 6 months old when his parents relocated to Kirkwood from Tamaqua, Pennsylvania. He has been married to Denise for over 40 years and they have three wonderful daughters, three awesome grandchildren and two talented son-in-laws.

It’s been almost two years since he retired. He enjoyed his working days at IBM Facilities Engineering and SUNY Cortland Facilities Planning Design and

Construction. He thought he would miss the daily routine upon retirement and he did, for about one day!

Bruce enjoys many things in life, but he does like to stay busy, as his wife knows! Not much for sitting around. He enjoys doing projects at home or at church, whether it’s cleaning, lawn work or repairing things. His other activities include biking, boating, downhill skiing, going to the gym and learning to play golf.

But, his favorite times are when he is with his grandchildren. They are so amazing!
