Anchor Bid, who was third on debut at Ballarat over 1200 metres on 4 June behind promising colt Levendi (Pierro), was shuffled back and did not gain a clear run on her second start when seventh to Royal Symphony (Domesday) and Whoomph (High Chaparral) over 1400 metres at Flemington on 24 June.

The Tony McEvoy-trained Royal Symphony, who is unbeaten in two starts including his three and three quarter length Flemington victory, and the Leon and Troy Corstens-trained Whoomph are both nominated for the Taj Rossi Series Final at Flemington.

The Lindsay Park-trained Amschel (Testa Rossa), who ran fourth in the same race, is also nominated for the $120,000 Listed race on Saturday, which yesterday received 14 entries.

Weir’s assistant racing manager Simon McCarten said the record-breaking trainer held Anchor Bid in high regard and was hopeful the Pinecliff Racing-owned filly could measure up to three-year-old stakes races in the spring.

“She is a nice filly and she didn’t have the clearest run last start and up to the mile will suit her with a bit more luck,” McCarten told ANZ Bloodstock News yesterday.

“Darren has always had a decent opinion of her and I’m not sure yet what level she will get to, but as she gets over more ground she is going to be better suited, so I think she will make a nice three-year-old.”

Weir won the Wakeful Stakes (Gr 2, 2000m) at Flemington last year with filly Tiamo Grace (Monaco Consul) who, at this time last year, was

unraced and started her career at Swan Hill in August before winning her maiden at Donald later that month.

McCarten said Anchor Bid was a more forward filly who was suited to city racing early in her career.

“She has definitely shown enough and there are more suitable races for in town at the moment compared to the bush, but she should measure up,” he said.

Three-year-old Ken’s Dream, who won on debut by nine lengths at Echuca last August and took out the McKenzie Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at his second start, has had an extended autumn and winter campaign.

He was runner-up in the Moomba Plate (Listed, 1100m) at Flemington first up on 11 March before winning third up at Caulfield over 1200 metres.

The Dream Ahead (Diktat) colt has been unplaced at his past three starts, the latest when fifth, beaten three and three quarter lengths by A R Creswick Stakes rivals Overstep (Exceed And Excel) and Invincible Al (I Am Invincible), at Flemington on 24 June over 1100 metres.

“He had a bit of weight at Flemington and it looks a nice race for him back up to 1200 metres and he is in pretty good order now,” McCarten said.

“It is probably fair to say he might have taken the next step on what he showed early days but we still feel he has a fair bit of upside to them. He’s run second down the straight at Flemington and it won’t be a problem on Saturday.”

Tuesday 4 July 2017 Weir Takes Aim At Flemington Stakes Races

Five-year-old Waratah Thoroughbreds-owned gelding Camdus is earmarked by Weir for the All Victorian Sprint Series Final after winning at Moonee Valley on 3 June and finishing second to Lord Da Vinci (Lonhro) at the same track two weeks later.

Ruettiger (Duporth), who won the Listed Flemington sprint race last year, finished third in the aforementioned Moonee Valley race on 17 June and is among 17 nominations for the $150,000 race on Saturday.

Also among the entries for the All Victorian Sprint Series Final are Ability (Reward For Effort), who has won both his starts this campaign for trainer Robert Smerdon, the Mick Price-trained Duke Of Brunswick (Magnus) and last year’s A R Creswick Stakes winner Lord Von Costa (Von Costa De Hero).

McCarten admitted Camdus, who is trained out of Weir’s Warrnambool stable, would find the Listed event harder than recent races in which he has run. Camdus has won six of his 17 starts including at Moonee Valley on 3 June over 1200 metres.

“He is in good form and going well down at our Warrnambool stable. It is a bit of a step up in grade but he deserves a go at this level now,” he said.

“Darren has trained him down (at the beach) for the last couple of preparations, he is an honest horse, so he should be running well again on Saturday.”

Rising eight-year-old Kenjorwood, who won the Lord Stakes

(Listed, 1700m) at Caulfield on Boxing Day, has been unplaced in seven starts since but is set to contest the $150,000 Winter Championship Final.

Well back at Moonee Valley on 17 June over 1600 metres at his last start, Kenjorwood is one of 23 nominations for the Listed race.

The Lindsay Park stable is triple-handed in the race with Sovereign Nation (Encosta De Lago), last start winner Petrology (Fastnet Rock) and Mihany (Redoute’s Choice) among the entries.

McCarten said Kenjorwood would appreciate a softer surface on Saturday, having raced on good tracks at his past two starts. Three starts ago Kenjorwood ran fourth in the City Of Adelaide Stakes (Listed, 1400m) on 29 April on a Soft 6 track.

“His last couple of runs probably have been a bit disappointing, but we are hoping to get a bit of cut in the ground at Flemington on Saturday for him,” he said.

“He probably does need to improve a little bit, but his best form would have him right in this race. He has had to carry a bit of weight at his past couple of runs and Darren has changed a few things around with his work and we expect him to go better on Saturday.”

Lees Keen On Everest Bid

Newcastle trainer Kris Lees is keen on a tilt at The Everest (1200m) with Le Romain (Hard Spun), who is set to barrier trial over 845 metres at Wyong tomorrow. The three-time Group One winner is likely to have two barrier trials ahead of the Missile Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) on 5 August, and Lees would expect a big run from the rising five-year-old were he to secure a starting berth in the $10,000,000 sprint. "I'll probably trial him twice before he resumes in the Missile," Lees said. "Freshened up for the 1200 metres, I've got no doubt he would be very competitive in The Everest. He excels at Randwick, and handles both good and wet ground." Click here to view the Wyong barrier trial fields. Portelli Juveniles Entered For Warwick FarmLocal trainer Gary Portelli will be out to continue his hot run with the stable’s juveniles, with in-form Lipizzan (Sebring) and Nicci’s Gold (Nicconi) entered for a 2YO Handicap (1200m) at Warwick Farm on Saturday. The Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winning trainer has Lipizzan set for her third win this preparation, with the last start Randwick winner joined in the race by stablemate, Newcastle maiden winner Nicci’s Gold. "Lipizzan has always shown ability and her form on wet tracks is a bonus at this time of year," Portelli said. "Rachel King will ride her again. She's won two

on her and we get to use her claim. Nicci's Gold has been a little revelation. We didn't expect her to win over 900 metres at Newcastle.” Nominations Extended At Warwick FarmNominations were yesterday extended for four races at Warwick Farm on Saturday including the Benchmark 93 Handicap (1600m) which received 11 entries. The $100,000 race includes last start Rockhampton Cup (1600m) winner Colour Charge (Red Dazzler), the Chris Waller-trained pair Liapari (Nom Du Jeu) and So Willie (More Than Ready) and the Jason Attard-trained Kellyville Flyer (Oratorio (IRE)). The Benchmark 78 Handicap (2400m) received 12 entries, while the Fillies and Mares Benchmark 85 Handicap (1400m) received 11 nominations. The 2YO Handicap (1200m) received 13 entries, with late nominations closing at 11am today. Click here to view the Warwick Farm nominations. Yogi To Stay In Midweek ClassThe Darren Weir-trained four-year-old Yogi (Raise The Flag) will remain in midweek class for the time being and is being prepared for a Benchmark 78 (2100m) at Sandown Lakeside next Wednesday. The New Zealand-bred gelding has won his last two starts at Sandown Hillside, but Darren Dance, of owners Australian Thoroughbred Bloodstock, said he was in no rush to raise Yogi’s sights. "We're just going through his classes. He's still a horse who's got a lot to learn about racing," Dance told Racing.com. "He's getting away with giving a big start at the moment, because he's better than them, but when he gets up into the better grades, it's pretty hard to do that. But he's an exciting prospect, he's got an exciting racing style, flashing home and running good time.” Lord Of The Sky Wins TrialStallion prospect Lord Of The Sky (Danerich), who has returned to trainer Robbie Laing’s

stables after his owners failed to reach a stud deal, yesterday won a 760 metre barrier trial on the Cranbourne Synthetic track yesterday. The Group One-placed rising seven-year-old, who was ridden in the barrier trial by Damien Oliver, will be aimed at the Sir John Monash Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) at Caulfield on 15 July and the Bletchingly Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at the same track on 29 July. "He went as good, if not better than I thought he might,” Cranbourne-based Laing told Racing.com. "I thought he might've been a bit rusty. He began OK, he quickly took up the lead as you'd expect. I said to Damien just look after him, give him a soft trial.” Awoke To Trial At RosehillThe Chris Waller-trained stakes-performed filly Awoke (Rip Van Winkle) is expected to barrier trial in heat three over 900 metres at Rosehill today. The three-year-old, who ran fifth in the ATC Flight Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) last October, raced three times last summer and has already had one barrier trial, also at Rosehill, this preparation. Three-year-old stablemate and juvenile stakes winner Cellarman (Mossman) will also barrier trial in the same heat. A Listed winner in Brisbane as a two-year-old, Cellarman has not raced since finishing unplaced at Kembla Grange in January. Click here to view the Rosehill barrier trial acceptances. Vermeer Possible For CupThe Aidan O’Brien-trained Johannes Vermeer (Galileo) could be aimed towards the Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) in the spring. The Group One-winning colt, who is part-owned by China Horse Club, took out the International Stakes (Gr 3, 1m2f) at the Curragh on Sunday, and O’Brien has earmarked the $3,000,000 race on 14 October as a potential target. "(We are) delighted with Johannes Vermeer. Ryan (Moore) said he travels well and quickens well but doesn't do an awful lot when he gets to the front," O'Brien told Racing UK. "Ryan said he could be a Caulfield Cup horse."

Cummings Takes OverRacing NSW stewards yesterday confirmed that James Cummings would officially have his first runners as private trainer for Godolphin on Saturday. Cummings, 29, replaces John O’Shea as head trainer of Sheikh Mohammed’s Australian operation. Since O’Shea’s resignation earlier this year, Godolphin assistant trainer Darren Beadman has been in charge of the large team on an interim basis. Godolphin has five runners entered for Warwick Farm on Saturday and three two-year-olds nominated at Kembla Grange on the same day. Yendall Injured In FallJockey Dean Yendall was taken to hospital complaining of neck and shoulder pain after a race fall at Mildura yesterday. Yendall, who currently leads the overall Victorian jockeys' premiership with 138 winners, rode a treble at the meeting before he fell from Soldier’s Image (Soldier’s Tale) in the final race of the day. He was transported to Mildura Hospital yesterday evening, where he was due to undergo precautionary scans.

Bayliss Given All-Clear To Return To SaddleGroup One-winning jockey Regan Bayliss has been given the green light to return to trackwork next week and expects to be back at the races before the end of the season. Bayliss broke his wrist in a race fall at Geelong on 19 May and received positive news about his recovery from the injury when he visited doctor Gary Zimmerman yesterday. "He was very surprised how quickly it has healed in the last three weeks," Bayliss said. "He was very happy with the bone. It's almost completely healed and he's happy for me to start trackwork next Monday with the view of riding trackwork for two weeks and then aiming to be back riding around the 22 July."

New Zealand

Authentic Paddy Back In WorkGroup Three winner Authentic Paddy (Howbaddouwantit) has returned to work at trainer Lisa Latta’s Awapuni stables. The rising eight-year-old gelding, who has won ten races

from 68 starts, has not raced since finishing seventh in the Bonecrusher New Zealand Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) at Ellerslie on 16 March. “He’s had a nice break and he’s back in now and looking really good,” she said. Authentic Paddy could be aimed at the Hawke’s Bay carnival at Hastings in the spring. Duelled To Stay At DormelloStakes-winning stallion Duelled (Redoute’s Choice) will remain at Dormello Stud for the coming breeding season after proprietor Graeme Rogerson elected to keep the horse. Duelled, who has sired three individual stakes winners including Group One winner Shootoff, was initially placed on the market by Rogerson but will be retained after siring the trainer’s impressive two-year-old winner Malambo and Prodigal Son, a winner of four races, at the weekend. “I was going to sell Duelled, but I think I will keep him now. He owes me nothing,” Rogerson said. “He can leave a two-year-old, he’s had a Queensland Derby winner in Shootoff, through to successful jumpers, so he is very versatile.”

Stolen Dance Joins Baker-Forsman Stable

Group Two-winning mare Stolen Dance (Alamosa) has been transferred to the Cambridge stable of Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman. The rising six-year-old won the Cal Isuzu Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) in December 2015 when trained by David Greene, and she will be campaigned at the highest level in the new season. "She's done everything but win a Group One so hopefully all goes well," co-trainer Forsman said. "She's been in work here for a few weeks and she's going along well." Patience Pays Off With Sensible PrincessLightly raced four-year-old Sensible Princess (Street Sense) is rewarding her connections’ patient approach. The mare has won her last two starts in comfortable fashion, and trainer Fraser Auret said she could target stakes races in time. “Physically, she’s only just starting to mature now,” Auret said. “After she won her first start last year she went quite shin sore so we’ve had to take her along very slowly. I’d like to keep her in her grades and hopefully continue to get her rating up, she’s only on a 71, so we can then have a go at some black type when the time is right.”

Asia

Poon Claim ReducedApprentice jockey Matthew Poon has had his claim reduced from 10lb to 7lb after riding his 20th winner of the season at Sha Tin on Saturday. Poon, who was the leading apprentice in South Australia last season, guided the David Hall-trained Hard Ball Get (Aussie Rules) to a half a length victory over 1400 metres at

the weekend. The rider is currently serving a suspension but will be able to resume riding on 16 July.

International

Rajasinghe To July StakesRoyal Ascot winner Rajasinghe (Choisir) is likely to tackle the July Stakes (Gr 2, 6f) at Newmarket on 13 July next up. The Richard Spencer-trained colt won the Coventry Stakes (Gr 2, 6f) at the Royal Meeting and has reportedly thrived in the interim. "Rajasinghe is absolutely bouncing after Ascot and the revised plan is to go for the July Stakes. The (Prix) Morny and other such races are a long way off and the (Newmarket) July course is only down the road,” Spencer told the Racing Post. "I know he'll have a penalty to carry but it's been done before and it will be interesting to see what turns up to take him on. After that we can think about Group Ones and such." 16 Confirmed For Eclipse

A total of 16 runners remain in contention for the £500,000 Eclipse Stakes (Gr 1, 1m2f) at Sandown on Saturday. Aidan O’Brien has saddled the winner of the Eclipse Stakes on five occasions, including So You Think (High Chaparral) in 2011 and Giant’s Causeway (Storm Cat) in 2000, and his five confirmations are headed by Derby (Gr 1, 1m4f) runner-up Cliffs Of Moher (Galileo). The Godolphin-raced Barney Roy (Excelebration) won the St James’s Palace Stakes (Gr 1, 1m) at Royal Ascot last month and could step up in trip for trainer Richard Hannon, while dual Group One winner Decorated Knight (Galileo) could bid to give Roger Charlton his second win in the race following Al Kazeem (Dubawi) in 2013.

De Sousa Picks Up Eminent RideFormer champion jockey Silvestre de Sousa has picked up the ride aboard the Sir Peter Vela-raced Eminent (Frankel) and will partner the colt in the Eclipse Stakes this weekend. The three-year-old ran fourth in the Derby at his last start under Jim Crowley, who is the retained rider for Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum, and trainer Martyn Meade said connections had made the decision to change riders. "The owners have decided to have a change. Jim is retained by Sheikh Hamdan but we needed to have certainty and it has been decided that a change was required,” Meade told the Racing Post. "Silvestre might sit on him before Saturday but all the work is done. We have to hope for the best now." Rio Secures Second Stakes WinThe Godolphin-raced Aiming For Rio (3 f Rio De La Plata - Tevara by Compton Place) continued her good run of form when winning the Prix Amandine (Listed, 1400m) at Maisons-Laffitte yesterday. The Andre Fabre-trained three-year-old filly, who won the Prix Marchand d’Or (Listed, 1300m) at her previous start, beat Dame Du Roi (Dark Angel) by three quarters of a length, with Lightupthenight (Dutch Art) just a head further behind in third. Aiming For Rio is one of two stakes winners for Darley stallion Rio De La Plata (Rahy), who was a Group One winner as two-year-old, three-year-old and five-year-old. He stood for a fee of €5,500 at Darley’s Haras Du Logis in France this year. Green Mask Lands Highlander StakesThe Brad Cox-trained Green Mask (6 g Mizzen Mast - Bonsai Beauty by Forestry) won the Highlander Stakes (Gr 2, 6f) at Woodbine on Sunday evening. The multiple stakes winner, who was beaten a neck into second in the Highlander Stakes last season, travelled strongly in behind the leaders for jockey Javier Castellano. He quickened up well between rivals in the straight and cleared away to win comfortably by two lengths from Calgary Cat (Cowtown Cat), with Commute (Hold Me Back) a further length behind in third place. INDUSTRY LOBBYING OPENS WORLD OF CHANGES

Skilled workers from overseas have long been integral to the success of Australia’s thoroughbred industry and so, the Federal Government’s announcement, in April, of its intention to scrap 457 Visas, was met with considerable alarm.

Fortunately, Thoroughbred Breeders Australia (TBA), in conjunction with Racing Australia and several industry groups, were quick out of the gates to lobby government in an effort to restore skilled visas.

As a result of those efforts, last Friday the government announced changes to the list of occupations under which employers can hire skilled workers from overseas; reintroducing the categories ‘horse trainer’ and ‘horse breeder.’

“It’s a major breakthrough, we’re grateful to the government for listening to our concerns.” said TBA chief executive, Tom Reilly. “Reinstating the category ‘horse trainer’, so that applicants can apply for both short and long term visas will provide certainty to racing and breeding.”

Despite the name, the category ‘horse trainer’ is also commonly used by breeding operations to bring in highly skilled and experienced staff. The separate category ‘horse breeder’ was reintroduced, but only for short term visas lasting two years.

“We will continue to work with government on these issues but it is a big step forward and I’d like to thank Barry O’Farrell at Racing Australia for his work on the issue,” added Reilly

“We also had the first meeting of the advisory board for the new research and development levy last week, another initiative between government and industry, and it is clear that if different groups can work together on issues the results will be better for all.”

TBA President, Basil Nolan, concurred with Reilly’s assessment: “On behalf of the TBA I’d

like to thank the government for listening to breeders, as well as the broader racing industry, on what our needs are.

“We don’t employ big numbers of foreign workers, but those that are here are a vital part of the workforce and in a global business such as breeding, we need to continue to have access to these highly skilled people.

“Another big take away from this is the willingness of government to lend an ear to our genuine concerns … our thanks to Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce, who met with Tom (Reilly) Derek Field and Peter O’Brien to discuss this issue face to face. I think he came to understand how serious this issue was at that meeting because he gave us a commitment he would assist on our behalf and be in our camp when the matter was discussed at Cabinet.”

O’Farrell was quick to applaud the joint co-operation of industry groups and, on radio on Sunday morning, was keen to assuage any doubts as to the importance of overseas workers.

“There are 65,000 people employed by the thoroughbred industry across Australia with only around 400 holders of 457 visas,” O’Farrell reveals. “That compares to around 95,000 here on skilled worker visas overall, so our industry only takes up a small fraction of those workers.”

O’Farrell was similarly eager to point out that the 457 visas weren’t available at the expense of domestic staff: “These (457 visa) workers fill critical roles and if they are not allowed in, stables will be either forced to use inexperienced staff or, in some cases, close down their operation.

“I haven’t met anyone yet that wouldn’t prefer to employ local staff, but the important thing to remember is that we are a part of a global industry and have Australians in many of the world’s racing and breeding regions passing on their skills, just as 457 visa holders are doing the same here.

“The thoroughbred industry contributes $6 billion annually to the Australian economy and it’s encouraging to see our own representative bodies, and those of government, working so closely together.”

Trainer Victor Chan looks to have a nice three-year-old on his hands in Kelson (Casino Prince) who simply destroyed his rivals in the 25 to 45

contest over 1500 metres at the Taipa racetrack on Sunday.

Ridden by the in form Irish rider Wayne Smith, Australian-bred Kelson, who was sporting blinkers for the first time, soon led and was always traveling well in the run, before leaving his rivals standing at the top of the straight to win by nine lengths.

Prior to Sunday’s race, the son of Casino Prince (Flying Spur) had shown ability in both his two previous runs at 1100 and 1200 metres, on both occasions displaying plenty of greenness.

On a track rated yielding to soft, Kelson clocked 1:32.20 which was .04 seconds faster than the Class Three taken out by Capitol Protector (Foreplay) later in the day.

Kelson was the first leg of a winning double for Wayne Smith who was impressed by the ease of the gelding’s win.

“It was my first time to ride him and I’ve got to say I didn’t really expect that,” Smith said.

“He was very impressive in the conditions

and he looks like a horse with a bright future.”Capital Protector was the second leg of

Smith’s double when he dug deep under joint top weight of 128 pounds to get home by a neck over 1500 metres.

Prepared by Kim Cheong, Capitol Protector has now won two races in Macau and placed a further six times from his 15 starts in the enclave to date.

The gelding is not an overly big horse, going to scale at just 1000 pounds, however he carried his weight well on Sunday and showed plenty of courage after being caught three deep in the run.

“He’s a lovely improving horse, very genuine and handles any conditions,” Smith said after the win.

Capitol Protector is an Australian import who was previously trained by former Macau trainer Michael Kent in Victoria, where he won a maiden at Colac from his eight runs there.

Another good win on the day was that of China Paradise (Red Arrow) who proved too slick for his opposition in the Class Two and Three over 1050 metres on the sand.

Ridden by Roger Yu, China Paradise is another Australian-bred import that arrived

Three-Year-Old Kelson Looks Promisingin Macau with only fair form, with a second at Bendigo from his three starts there when prepared by Darren Weir.

China Paradise looked speedy and weak when he first arrived in Macau, however he has been given time to progress and the gelding has now furnished into a talented horse as late three-year-old.

The bay has now won three races and placed twice from seven starts in Macau, including a victory in the Lisboa Prelude (Listed, 1200m), and he is now nudging the HK$700,000 mark in prize money.

Iron Horse Wins Again

Iron horse Gauteng (More Than Ready) has notched up his 15th race win in Macau at his 168th start in the territory with a hard fought win in the Class Five Handicap over 1350 metres at the Taipa race track on Sunday.

After being back in the run early, the old warrior had to fight hard to reel in firstly Fortune Master (Strada) who looked like the winner at the 200 metres, and then stave off a late burst from the heavily bet Oriental Profit (Mastercraftsman), to score by a short head on the line with Fortune Master close up in third.

The rising 11-year-old rarely goes around without collecting a prize money cheque and Sunday’s win was his 11th at the 1350 metres distance. The son of More Than Ready (Southern Halo) has now earned over HK$4,300,000 in prize money for his owner Chan Ming Wing.

Prepared in Macau by trainer K H Leong, Gauteng commenced his racing career under the Darley racing banner of Sheikh Mohammed. As a two-year-old Gauteng, won a Mornington maiden under Dwayne Dunn for trainer Lee Freedman.

The gelding failed to make a significant impact in metropolitan company and, after a few attempts, was sold to Macau at a modest sum. The ten-year-old is one of those good, strong-boned horses that have seldom had any physical problems, and his racing days are far from over judging by his sterling performance on Sunday.
